Secrets of the Garden: Food Chains and the Food Web in Our Backyard, by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld

Perfect for spring planting season--an outstanding book about backyard science the whole family will appreciate.

Alice's family plants a vegetable garden each spring, and this budding naturalist reports all she sees about how the plants grow, what insects come to eat the plants, and what birds and animals come to eat the insects.  It's the food chain, right in her own backyard!

While Alice's narrative is simple and engaging, science concepts are presented in more depth in sidebars by a pair of very knowledgeable (and highly amusing) chickens! Noted science writer Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld knows how to layer information to make it accessible to a wide range of readers and useful for educators. And illustrator Priscilla Lamont's funny, friendly paintings make this a garden everyone will want to explore.

Kids will eat up this wonderful book of backyard science—and perhaps they'll even be inspired to eat their vegetables!

This book is a marvelous way for children to learn about nature and food chains ...
By Deb
Mom and Dad gathered their family around them and went outside to check for the signs of spring. Alice smiled and she held some daffodils in her hand and her brother, Pete, looked toward the robin sitting on her perch in a tree. Daisy and Maisy, their two chickens, were wandering in the yard. It was getting warmer and soon it would be "time to plant the garden." Dad prepared the soil and the children began to plant lettuce, carrots, peas, and beets. Would they plant some catnip for their cat, Honey?

Daisy and Maisy knew all about composting and that "old leaves and vegetable scraps--along with a little poop from [their] coop" were good for the plants. Day after day, Alice and Pete watched the soil to see if any of their seeds had sprouted. Soon the sprouts were seen and Pete excitedly called for his sister to come see them. Each one of the sprouts looked different. Soon they became seedlings and the garden was on its way. Mom began to plant her potted seedlings and she put "potatoes the size of marbles in the ground." Everything in the garden was connected to nature and they would soon learn why.

This book is a marvelous way for children to learn about nature and food chains. Set up in a picture book format, this tale is fun to follow and an easy way to learn about the wonders of nature. The two chickens, Daisy and Maisy, are a dynamic, comical duo who lecture about the garden and how it connects to the food chain and food wed. For example, they have a chart and point out a variety of herbivores, carnivores, and tell us why they are omnivores. The whimsical, charming artwork is detailed and meshes well with the tale. I especially liked the panel of worms cultivating the soil. The maze-like tunnels have text and the reader needs to turn the book this way and that to read it. This is an amazing garden learning experience that would be a perfect addition to any homeschool or classroom shelves you might want to add to your list!

Sweet, informative, relevant book
By E. B. Glass
I read this book with my 5 year old. It was on her kindergarten summer reading list. We really enjoyed it! It does a great job of introducing the concepts of food chains and food webs in a way that was really understandable. When asked, my daughter was able to easily relate the information back to me. She really enjoyed learning about how the entire family enjoys the garden. Her favorite parts were the map of the garden and the talking chickens.

Many of our friends and neighbors are cultivating gardens and backyard chickens, so I am planning to give this book as a gift to several children in our lives.

A delight!
By S. Read
oh my, what a delight!!! It is quite as though someone decided to make a picture book of our backyard! As the sister and brother help plant the spring vegetable garden, their backyard chickens are along to discuss compost, food chains and food webs. Perfect picture book, from the hawks and robins to the worms and spiders. ' Two enthusiastic, heart-warming thumbs up from this small-homesteading homeschool mama. ' They even have a wood burning fire inside in the winter. :)

Hardy Californians: A Woman's Life with Native Plants, by Lester Rowntree

Lester G. E. Rowntree (1879-1979), free-spirited adventurer and pioneering botanist, was fifty-two when she traded a comfortable home for the life of a peripatetic traveler in the California mountains, deserts, and forests. Through hundreds of magazine and journal articles, two acclaimed books, and uncounted public lectures, Rowntree shared her vast knowledge of California native plants and at the same time argued passionately for the protection of the state's bountiful flora. A mountain mystic who worshipped on Sierra peaks, bathed in alpine streams, and lived for months on beans and bread, Rowntree has remained an inspiration in native plant horticulture and plant conservation to this day.

A beloved classic first published in 1936, Hardy Californians is Rowntree's poetic sketch of California and its plant life. In charming prose, she takes us along on her annual seed-collecting journey through the state and gives a concise introduction to the complexities of California flora, climate, and geography. The book also gives information on the suitability of many native California plants for the garden. This new edition includes a comprehensive biographical essay, a chapter on Rowntree's horticultural legacy, an updated species list, and a complete bibliography of her writings.

Insightful biographical material, new photos, comprehensive bibliography, and updated plant names add context and currency to an extraordinary book."—--Nora Harlow, coeditor of Wild Lilies, Irises, and Grasses

"At last Lester Rowntree's classic book Hardy Californians is in print again. What a treasure this book is! Lester was a true pioneer and her annual journey, starting in the desert, heading north through the foothills, then ending in the mountains is one that every reader will want to recreate."—Glenn Keator, author of Complete Garden Guide to the Native Perennials of California

About the Author
Lester Rowntree was born in England and spent much of her life in Carmel, California. In addition to Hardy Californians, she wrote The Flowering Shrubs of California and four children's books. Lester B. Rowntree, her grandson, is a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.

If You Love Your Plants and the Worlds They Thrive In, Buy This Book!
By Sue Tarjan
First published in 1936, this seminal guide to California's native plants is a must-have for any gardener, Californian or not, who wants to work with rather than against nature in the garden. Lester Rowntree spent her summers exploring the back roads, desert washes, and mountain trails of California collecting specimens and documenting the habits and habitats of her beloved native plants. Her winters were spent writing up her notes and experimenting with propagating and growing native plants in her own garden in the Carmel Highlands just north of Big Sur. An amateur "plant enthusiast," committed conservationist, and gifted writer with an unpretentious style and a wry, gentle sense of humor, her keen insight into plant ecology years before the term "ecology" was coined will amaze, delight, and humble the contemporary reader. Lester Rowntree wrote another classic, The Flowering Shrubs of California (1939), regrettably out of print at this time but available in many libraries.

An essential gardening classic
By Tom Fischer
This is one of the greatest--and most delightful--books ever written about North American native plants. It brims with evocative descriptions, practical advice, and humor. And it's clearly aimed at gardeners beyond the borders of California, although it should be a bible for Californian gardeners as well.

This new edition comes with two engaging introductions--a biographical sketch by Rowntree's grandson, and an appreciative essay by Judith Lowry. Another useful feature is an appendix giving updated taxonomic information about the plants Rowntree mentions.

This truly is one of the great classics of garden writing. Get it.

What Price Better Health?: Hazards of the Research Imperative (California/Milbank Books on Health and the Public), by Daniel Callahan

The idea that we have an unlimited moral imperative to pursue medical research is deeply rooted in American society and medicine. In this provocative work, Daniel Callahan exposes the ways in which such a seemingly high and humane ideal can be corrupted and distorted into a harmful practice.

Medical research, with its power to attract money and political support, and its promise of cures for a wide range of medical burdens, has good and bad sides—which are often indistinguishable. In What Price Better Health?, Callahan teases out the distinctions and differences, revealing the difficulties that result when the research imperative is suffused with excessive zeal, adulterated by the profit motive, or used to justify cutting moral corners. Exploring the National Institutes of Health's annual budget, the inflated estimates of health care cost savings that result from research, the high prices charged by drug companies, the use and misuse of human subjects for medical testing, and the controversies surrounding human cloning and stem cell research, Callahan clarifies the fine line between doing good and doing harm in the name of medical progress. His work shows that medical research must be understood in light of other social and economic needs and how even the research imperative, dedicated to the highest human good, has its limits.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
This book is one of the most interesting and detailed among recent efforts to examine the history and modern scope of American medical research. It explores the development of policies that govern experimentation involving human subjects, the rise of medical research institutions and funding sources, the place of industry in promoting research and producing its technological offshoots, the role of the federal government in regulating research, and the philosophical, ethical, and policy issues that are raised by the research enterprise. Even if one does not agree with Callahan's view of the problems that the research establishment generates or with his recommendations for how to correct them, he is a splendid teacher who challenges one to think more crisply and deeply about the purpose and future of medical research. In medical circles, the term "research" evokes associations with intellectual accomplishment and social benefit. Although Callahan discusses these goods, his focus is on a darker side of research -- that is, research as it is pursued to excess by its participants and backers out of a belief in its overriding social importance and that damages the worth and influence of other social values and activities. The central premise of this book is that the pursuit of research has been elevated from a moral good to a moral requirement, one that creates what Callahan refers to in his book as "the research imperative." From seeing the advances that research-based medicine has made in combating disease, scientists and society have concluded that relief from illness is not enough, that only the conquest of illness will do, thus opening the way toward an even greater life span and enhanced biologic function. This conclusion is made possible by a persistent and expanding commitment to research. Callahan's prescription for the condition he has diagnosed is comprehensive oversight and setting of priorities for the research enterprise along with limitation of its promise of an unboundedly healthful future. This prescription requires, in essence, that excess be curbed by the creation of limits. For ordinary persons, Callahan counsels acceptance of such limits. For example, he would support research on preserving and restoring health but not on lengthening life -- "there is no social need to greatly extend life expectancy," he writes. For scientists, he counsels restraint -- not pursuing lines of investigation that threaten either important cost barriers or crucial social and moral values. When an enlargement of one aspect of social striving damages other worthy activities, restraint is justified. But appropriately applying this concept to the search for knowledge is procedurally difficult and conceptually murky. When science is not merely extending the content of an established paradigm but crossing its border into new territory, foreknowledge of where the research will lead ranges from uncertain to nonexistent. To forecast, much less govern, fundamental scientific directions is not now possible. And Callahan's approach to governance -- importing methods that deal with costs, benefits, and priorities from disciplines such as technology assessment and experiences such as the Oregon Medicaid rationing program -- is flawed. We have problems comparing and influencing the use of existing forms of technology with these methods. How much more difficult it would be to apply these methods to hypothetical innovations. Yet even if our predictive power with respect to scientific directions were to grow unpredictably (and research on this is needed), to what degree should society encumber its basic drive to discover how the world works? The problem is how to enhance human dignity through restraints, such as those that protect the rights of human research subjects, without damaging the cultural ethos that values transcending the present through the pursuit of knowledge. Callahan's book, as important and provocative as it is, does not resolve this dilemma but furthers the effort to engage with it. Stanley J. Reiser, M.D., Ph.D.

Review
"One of the foremost bioethicists of our age questions the central dogmas of biomedical research, namely that more science necessarily delivers a better life and that aging is a preventable disease. Callahan brilliantly deconstructs the myths behind medical research; his arguments and socratic inquiry will shake your complacency as it did my own."

From the Inside Flap
"This book is of special importance. Callahan brings together in one volume the history of biomedical research in the U.S., a discussion of the goals, process, and conduct of biomedical research, and a compelling proposal for reforming the balance between research and public health policies."--Dorothy Rice, coauthor of The Dynamics of Disability: Measuring and Monitoring Disability for Social Security Programs

"This book is the fruit of many years of reflection by one who has been at the center of the bioethics movement in this country. Managing to be simultaneously readable and knowledgeable, Callahan has also not been afraid to be provocative. Corporate greed is the greater danger to healthcare

While Author Callahan's book highlights a critique of what could be termed the "politically correct" pursuit of research, there is a greater danger here that deserves more attention. Corporations are driving the research for pharmaceuticals and treatments that will maximize their stock price. Far more is compromised when healthcare is driven by profit than by excessive altruism.
Without doubt the healthcare system of the US is in great trouble. I just don't think Callahan has found the source of the biggest problem.

Full of Ideas and Fun to Read
By ChrisNY
If you want good looking gardens/landscapes but don't want to spend all your time tending, digging and chasing deer, this book is for you. Written in a month by month format, Danz writes about the typical tasks for each month and offers tips on how to make them easier. There are lists of fool-proof plants, how and when to plant and prune, plus lots of hints on setting up a garden (there is more about garden design in her other book). You won't find garden lay-outs or landscaping plans which I admit I was looking for when I bought this book. But I've ended up using just about every tip in this book - my favorite being the "Old Newspaper Trick" - and though I'll never be a die-hard gardener, they've helped make the whole process almost fun.

Helpful tips but not particularly funny
By Pittsburgh Reader
I am a relative newcomer to gardening and this book has helpful tips. It is particularly useful if you want to garden in the style of Gertrude Jeykll. I never saw "Mrs. Greenthumbs" on television nor heard her on the radio. She may have been very funny in these appearances, but I didn't feel like it translated to the page very well. Nevertheless, Cassandra Danz died three years ago and this book is part of her legacy, about which she should be proud.

The Quick and the Dead: Artists and Anatomy, by Deanna Petherbridge, Ludmilla Jordanova

The human body has long been central to Western art, and in order to represent the body in all its manifestations many artists have studied anatomy: dissecting the dead to better depict the living. The Quick and the Dead focuses on a range of artists, among them Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Albrecht Dürer, William Hogarth, George Stubbs, Théodore Géricault, Kiki Smith, Joel-Peter Witkin, and Cindy Sherman to show the great richness and complexity that can result when art and science intersect. The drawings, prints, photographs, and objects in this book span five centuries and mark numerous cultural shifts, yet their imagery is as powerful today as when it was created.

Bodily representation has shadowed Western art since the High Renaissance, particularly in the form of atlases of anatomical prints, detailed drawings, and wax cadavers used for teaching purposes. Studying anatomy was deemed so essential that it was part of the instruction program in the earliest Italian academies. Now contemporary artists interested in cultural constuctions of the body are reinvigorating the subject, with the fragmentation of human form being a prime concern.

Since 1858, Gray's Anatomy has served to legitimize notions of "serious" science unchallenged by the frivolity of art. But in recent years a kind of rapprochement between medical history and cultural theory has occurred, and new medical technologies have become a wellspring for artists as well as for doctors. As The Quick and the Dead makes clear, the human body—symbolic and intimate, material and sacred—is a vital cultural resource and a site where various social constituencies find relevant meaning.

From the inside to the 'in'-side
By Grady Harp
Gross Anatomy has always sounded to the lay public as some kind of perjorative about what medical students due, what pornographers do, and what artists perch above the cadaver to represent. Actually nothing could be further from the truth. For centuries artists and scientists have been joined at the hip - witness Vesalius and his immaculate engravings of the musculature and skeltons of the dissected bodies obtained by grave robbers under the umbrella of education. In this superbly written and illustrated volume Deanna Petherbridge and Ludmilla Jordanova have gleaned some of the finest examples of the study and representation of the human body resulting from this still ongoing duplicity between anatomists/physicians and artists. The journey here is well documented from the earliest forms to the latest depictions of how intensive visual and manual dissection of the human body has contributed to some of the finest art in the world. Bravo to the authors for opening a door to the lay public to once and for all subsume the negative implications of the term Gross Anatomy. Superb book!

beauty of the human body!
By theinnocence
be amazed at the beauty and delicay in which different artists at different times try to express and show the wonders of the human body.
i was left in awe, looking over the pages again and again, captivated by the words along with the images. and maybe just a bit brighter in the world of science.

A Scholarly Book -- and that may be the problem
By PlanoTX
I've always been interested in medical science and, so, my children gave this book to me as a gift.

It is a scholarly book. The plates selected for the book are awesome.

The writing -- and the typography -- of the book is the problem. I couldn't find the name of the font used, except that the book is typeset by Stefania Bonelli and printed in England. It is a serif font that looks excessively manuscriptive. The text under the plates is difficult to read, and if you ever want to look something up in the 'List of Works', bring a magnifying lens; it is probably a 4-point font size.

Now to the text itself. Scholarly! There should be no doubt about the credentials of Deanna Petherbridge who 'curated' the book. However, the lecture is soporific. To read, as a typical passage, "The exclusions of women's bodies from anatomical textbooks, except the specifically obstetrical, reveals the phallocentricity of anatomical discourse, even in the 20th century. The male body is understood to be the 'universal' anatomical model, and homologies with the male body are physical as well as visual (Schiebinger, 1987).", makes progressing through the book much like slogging through a collection of winter snow drifts.

I was motivated to read through this book, mind-numbing as it was. The upside to the book is that it is only 113 pages long and perhaps half of that is taken by plates and photographs.

To whom would I recommend this book? To anatomy professors and their students -- and to insomniacs.

Paulinus of Nola: Life, Letters, and Poems (Transformation of the Classical Heritage), by Dennis E. Trout

This study offers a comprehensive reconsideration of the life and literary works of Paulinus of Nola (ca. 352-431), a Roman senator who renounced his political career and secular lifestyle to become a monk, bishop, impresario of a saint's cult, and prominent Christian poet. Dennis Trout considers all the ancient materials and modern commentary on Paulinus, and also delves into archaeological and historical sources to illuminate the various settings in which we see this late ancient man at work. This vivid historical biography traces Paulinus's intellectual and spiritual journey and at the same time explores many facets of the late ancient Roman world.

In addition to filling out the details of Paulinus's life at Nola, Trout looks in depth at Paulinus before his ascetic conversion, providing a new assessment of this formative period to better understand Paulinus's subsequent importance within the influential ascetic and ecclesiastical circles of his age. Trout also highlights Paulinus's place in the swirl of rebellions and heresies of the time, in the pagan revival of the 390s, and especially in the development of a new genre of Christian poetry. And, he examines anew Paulinus's relationships with such figures as Jerome, Rufinus, and Augustine. Trout fully explores the complexity of a figure who has too often been simplified and provides new insights into the kaleidoscopic character of the age in which he lived.

From the Inside Flap
"It is a book that does full justice, on his own terms, to Paulinus of Nola, a crucial figure in the religious and literary life of Latin Christianity in the late fourth and early fifth centures. Usually overshadowed by even more vivid and better-known contemporaries such as Ambrose, Jerome, and Augustine, Paulinus has long needed a biographer who could do justice to the poise with which he moved in a world already crowded with literary 'lights'. . . .Trout succeeds in doing all this in a manner that manages to be both exhaustive and invariably instructive."—Peter Brown, author of Society and the Holy in Late Antiquity

essence of Christianity
By GOcalvary
Paulinus of Nola is a historical work of art. It is well structured, beautifully written and easily read. This book captures the essence of Christianity as Paulinus lived it and as we should live. I look forward to seeing more of Mr. Trout's thoughts and ideas expressed in his beautiful prose.

From Publishers Weekly
A preschool-age boy actively helps to prepare for the homecoming of his new sister in Rockwell's (Good Enough to Eat: A Kid's Guide to Food and Nutrition) reassuring account. The young narrator shares with the reader an upbeat version of what to expect, starting with accompanying Mommy to an obstetrical appointment and ending with the boy's success at distracting the crying newborn with a musical toy. Along the way, stylized but essentially realistic illustrations show calm, smiling characters: white-haired Grannie, phone held to her ear, reports news of the birth to the beaming narrator; parents, boy and newborn snuggle in the hospital bed. Rockwell integrates a factual approach (there is a gestation-period chart) and a down-home quality (the boy compares his belly button with the baby's umbilical scab and later reports that the baby "sounds like a cat when she cries"). Emphasis and proportion accurately reflect a happy child's point of view. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1From a chart on how a baby grows in utero to the end of her first day home, this book covers the entire birthing process as described by an older brother. The opening pages present information about the fetus, while the middle section shows the family getting ready and the boy and his grandmother waiting anxiously for the big moment. Rather than delve into the boys emotional responses to having a new sibling, the book objectively presents intimate images and experiences: the baby inside the womb (shown in mothers tummy and in a full-page close-up), the mother nursing her, the boy and his dad carefully sponging around the umbilical cord scab. There is comfort in the honesty and straightforward familiarity of the text, which is supported by soft colored-pencil drawings. At times the boy looks flat on the page, and his teardrop eyes and round head are more cartoonlike than realistic. However, when Eliza hits the scene the artwork really shines, as Rockwell captures both the skinny helplessness and surprising individuality of a newborn. Readers who have already welcomed a new baby into their home will enjoy remembering the events portrayed here while future siblings will gain insight into whats in store for them.Martha Topol, Traverse Area District Library, Traverse City, MI

From Kirkus Reviews
PLB 0-517-80012-8 Rockwell (who illustrated Anne Rockwell's Halloween Day, 1997, etc.) focuses on a young boy as he and his family prepare for the birth of his baby sister. The precocious narrator confidently discusses the growth of the baby in his mommy's womb and describes visits to the obstetrician to hear the baby's heartbeat. Also covered are the arrangements for the boy's care while his mother is in labor, the hospital visit, and baby's arrival at home. The young narrator reflects on how his baby sister is not yet used to the concept of day and night and when she, at one point, becomes inconsolable, he fetches a favorite toy to soothe her. In a refreshing departure from other books about siblings, this one does not address negative feelings of anxiety, trepidation, or jealousy. Instead, the approach of the text is optimistic, reflected in Rockwell's bright, cheerful illustrations. Age-appropriate pictures cover fetal development, including a wonderfully informative spread entitled ``How a baby grows,'' charting the period from conception to term. An upbeat, encouraging account. (Picture book. 5-8) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Accurate and sweet book for siblings to be
By Amazon Customer
Great book for siblings! My boys love this book and we read it often in preparation for their new brothers arrival. I did change the wording a bit as I was seeing a midwife instead of a doctor and birthing at a birth center-easy adjustment! The book is a great explanation of pregnancy in realistic but kid appropriate language. It talks about the cord (stump), nursing, and how an embryo grows. Very cute story too! Good baby shower gift for a little brother to be!

2 1/2 year old loves this book.
By Amazon Customer
We bought 2 other welcoming baby books and this is my 2 1/2 year old's favorite. I summarize the book for him instead of reading what it says since the words are too much for him (umbilical cord, womb, etc.) However he loves the concepts. I especially wanted a book that shows Mommy and Daddy going to the hospital, since this is a transition I need to prepare him for. He understands what is going to happen now and reminds me that he wants to come to the hospital too.

Kiddo approved!
By Matthew Wiemer
Love this book! With a baby on the way it has really helped our 3 year old understand what to expect, even facilitating him to ask more questions and to show interest in what will happen. He's excited to be a big brother and asks frequently to have this book read week before bed!
