Surprise! A well written and humorous tome on fish!!

Rockfishes of the Northeast Pacific starts out with a laugh-out-loud intro, in which the editor sums up: "Why are we writing about rockfish? That's because rockfish are cool. ... " The first few chapters are a good intro for us non-scientific fish aficionados (yes, that's how it's spelled!). And the photos and artwork throughout the book are superb. I leave mine on my coffee table, it's so pretty, and I do refer to it frequently whenever I see a "new" (at least to me) variety of rockfish, which is a farily common occurrence while I'm scuba diving in my local Southern California waters.

I know other, more "scientific" readers have panned the book for lack of supporting data, etc. but as a layperson I didn't notice anything missing. My appreciation for/understanding of this important family of fishes is significantly enhanced by this book. And I'll say it again: it's actually a good read, as long as you are nutty enough to purchase a large book devoted to a single variety of fish. Like me.

Buy it, I think you'll like it!

Much more than one can hope for....

First of all, I am not a rockfish biologist. All my research is focused on sturgeons, but I have always had a "thing" for rockfish. I for one, feel this book represents the ultimate field guide. But unlike most field guides, it has a tremendous amount of information concerning each species as well as fisheries, stock trends etc.....
If you need more information on rockfish than what this volume provides, go look it up in a journal! That is what journals are for. This book does a great job in summing up the basic life history aspects and description of each species. Also worth mentioning is the fact that this is one heck of a beautiful book! The photos are good to great and the distribution maps are nicely done. In terms of overall layout, we can all learn much from this volume. BRAVO !!!!!

Great reference for divers

After reading this book I am now confident I can tell the difference between canary, vermilion and yelloweye rockfish. As a pacific northwest diver I see a lot of these and other rockfish. My other fish books seem to have the same or similar single, small picture of each fish. This book has 6 or 8 pictures of each fish showing them in various stages of life which is very important for rockfish. This book also covers a lot of fish missing from my other books.

Required Reading for Hildegard Fans

You can trust Ms. Newman and her efforts to present Hildegard. I've found that most scholars trip over themselves in an effort to not sound too "religious" when researching and writing about people held out to be holy. All this does it betray the research subject but not Ms. Newman. She is able to illuminate (pun intended) Hildegard in the context of her historical period as an intelligent, purposive and beautiful person. No one I've read speaks to me more solidly and soulfully than Ms. Newman.

"the necessary and the unnecessary"

Up in the northwest part of Madagascar there's a region called the Sambirano which is highly fertile. The French developed plantations of coffee, cacao, and cashews there soon after they occupied the island in the late 19th century. As the local Sakalava did not fancy wage labor, many migrants from other parts of the great island appeared to take up both blue collar and white collar positions. After independence, and with the disappearance of the French, more people came from outside the area to work. Madagascar has one language, but several dialects, and there are many "ethnic" groups separated more by history and culture than by DNA. The outsiders who come to the town of Ambanja find it hard to assimilate into local society. Land ownership is problematic because a) a lot of land is owned by government corporations and cannot be sold to individuals and b) the local Sakalava own much of the rest. Being part of a social network is essential in many societies, all the more so in a poor one like Madagascar. Kinship is usually the basis of social networks in Madagascar, but migrants have no local kin. One way in which people may become part of such a network over time is through entering the fascinatingly complex system of spirit possession in various roles. It is largely women that can do this. Understanding inequality and powerlessness in society is vital to knowledge of health issues. Sharp, in a most interesting study, has detailed the nature of spirit possession (tromba) in the Sambirano region, its history, its various ramifications. She shows the connection between women, migration and power in a migrant society and relates it to health, both mental and physical. Her interest is not a narrow one; some 60% of Ambanja women have been possessed at one time or another. They are possessed by both royal spirits of the old Sakalava kings and by the spirits of popular folk heroes. To be tied to the local kings or heroes through tromba possession is to be assimilated in a way. Sometimes a woman can be considered to be married to the spirit which possesses her, thus truly a part of a kin group. The dispossessed (migrants in poor condition) slowly become possessed by local spirits and so begin to assimilate and improve their status.

I would say that anyone who is seriously interested in Madagascar has to read this book. Similarly, if you are a scholar of spirit possession as a phenomenon (and it exists all over the planet), you must read this book too. That said, it is not going to be an easy read ! First of all, the style is hardcore academic with references scattered on every page instead of in footnotes. The author, as far as I can tell, is fluent in Malagasy, which is great, but we, the readers, are not much enlightened by the vast number of Malagasy words throughout the text, though I hasten to add that I think a few key terms are fair game. Secondly, I have this gut feeling that this was originally a thesis and got turned into a book. That is common and not a problem, but the style should vary. In a thesis you try to convince the supervisors that you know what you are talking about and you are familiar with the literature. You have collected a good amount of data and you can demonstrate links and connections. When you change to a book, you try to drop that tone and go for a wider, broader audience, for `the ages' if you will. You pare the "unnecessary" from the "necessary". This was not done. Lastly, though as I said, this is a useful, interesting study, I feel some kind of disconnect between the Sakalava royalty and the actual possessions which Sharp describes. She writes of Mampiary the cowherd, Be Ondry and Djao Kondry the boxers, Mbotimahasaky the prostitute, and so on. There are others, reputedly from Sakalava royal lineages, as "all spirits were royalty when they were alive", but the royal connection is curiously unstressed. The author claims that in this way past and present come together in the persons of the possessed, but I don't see that. It is more that local and outsider come together in that way. She makes this point too, very well. The other claim is not much substantiated.
The chapters about spirit possession of children, about evil spirits, and about the connection of foreign religions to tromba (Catholicism, Islam and Protestantism) are interesting. Overall, questions about style and direction arise, but there is no doubt that it's a useful addition to the literature.

This deeply contextualized ethnography of possession deals with women, migration, and power as frames for both spirit possession and the construction of identity in the booming migrant town of Ambanja, in the Sambirano valley of northern Madagascar. The Malagasy word for the possession experience is tromba, which refers as well to the royal ancestral spirits of the Sakalava (the ethnic group under study), the institution of possession, and the spirit mediums themselves. Sharp is particularly sensitive to issues of power and political agency, and examines possession as a mode of political consciousness that is embedded in religious experience. Possession among the Sakalava is highly formalized, and spirits who are the agents of oracular possession are often part of family inheritance. Thus, it is important to identify and name spirits, a phenomenon which is important elsewhere in Africa as well. This naming provides a link with the local culture, including political and religious traditions, as well as with the land itself. With the rise of "Malagasization" in the postcolonial period (following a revolt against the French in 1947), tromba possession has increased and the number and variety of tromba spirits has expanded. It is no accident, then, that the prestige and power of tromba spirits, suppressed by the French, has been enhanced. Perhaps because tromba rituals have been a primary instrument for preserving and interpreting the history of the island, Malagasization has brought the tromba spirits and institution closer to the centers of Malagasy political authority and economic production. Indeed, the surprising power and prestige of the female tromba spirit mediums has enabled them to dictate the direction of national economic development projects. One of Sharp's observations is that contrary to the dominant assumptions in anthropology, Sakalava possession is not necessarily a province of the marginalized and weak. Though Malagasy women are chiched as weak or soft, while men are regarded as strong or hard, it is the women who, through their spirit voices, determine the pace and organization of the culture. Tromba mediums are also widely consulted healers who appear to have an amicable and respectful relationship with other medical practitioners on the island. Tromba are not the only spirits on Madagascar. There is another category of volatile and unpredictable spirits (njarinintsy) responsible for negative, unwanted possession, as well as for mass possession, largely of adolescent migrant girls, in the public schools. In one instance documented by Sharp, a powerful healer (moasy) was consulted. He reported that the local ancestors were angry because the French paid no regard to the sacredness of the ancestral ground on which the school was built, moving and destroying tombs. The healer recommended the performance on the school grounds of a ceremony honoring the deceased ancestors, including the sacrifice of an ox. Following this performance, the possession diminished considerably. Another interesting feature of this book is that it addresses the topic of the interface of local possession with Christianity. The Protestant Church is dominant in much of Madagascar, and has highly developed forms of healing rituals and exorcisms, even sponsoring exorcism retreats. Sharp has demonstrated that the clientele, whom she calls the dispossessed, consists to a great extent of those who cannot cope with either the status or the multilayered identity of the Sakalava defined through the dominant institution of tromba mediumship. In short, anyone with an interest in the phenomenon of spirit possession will learn quite a lot from this book.

Rather than harp on the tired theme, "they're more like us than you think," Waal instead offers warmly personal explanations of the impressive diversity of behavior among primate species, including chimpanzees, baboons, macaques, capuchin monkeys and bonobos. Humor and personality are counterbalanced by deftly inserted scientific concepts and theories, and Waal's expressive photos draw viewers into the "soap opera" of the primates' lives. Wonder Between The Covers

The book's format is essentially a picture a page, with a paragraph to describe it.

There are nine species of primates featured in this book, most prominently bonobos and chimpanzees. There are also macaques, capuchins, and baboons (among others) shown as well.

The photos capture candid, sometimes poignant moments, in the lives of our evolutionary cousins. The caption paragraphs often offer a humorous or anecdotal story about the featured primate.

My only complaint is that other apes (orangutans, gorillas, gibbons) weren't featured at all, but Frans de Waal didn't do extensive studies of those species, and so it makes sense he didn't have the opportunities to photograph them.

The book is what it is, not a scientific work, but more of an art project. I'd imagine kids would enjoy looking at these pictures quite a bit. I know my inner child sure did.

The author has made the best of the opportunity to see, record, and tell he has had thanks to his work of many years.

Great photographs are accompanied by text written in plain, in the sense of non-scholar, language.
Anyone with curiosity about "human" and other primates' behavior and/or a taste for photography will enjoy this book.

Seeing the album and some not-very-intelligent recent events makes me think some humans actually represent a DESCENT from monkeys.

The book is elegantly presented and diagramed. It seemed to me there were a few "typos", but may be it's because I am not a native English speaker. No big deal any way. I would buy it again.

They're not like us, they're unique

Frans de Waal's collection of primate portraits covers various species of monkeys in many social situations. Long hours spent with his subjects means that Waal had their total trust when photographing them. Thus, his subjects have a natural, unforced manner that allows their true nature to shine through. Waal's accomplishment, in this occasionally hilarious, frequently touching, but always fascinating collection of photographs is that he transcends the notion that the value of primates lies in how much they are like humans. His texts and pictures reveal them not as inferior versions of homo sapiens, but simply as @what they are: intelligent, sensitive, highly socially evolved creatures. This is a beautiful and fascinating book.

Nice book, but not a travel guide

I was looking for more information on things to do in the Monterey Area and this was more of an informational guide on animals and areas to find them. Well done, but not really a "travel guide" and not set up like one.

An essential guide to the Monterey area!

Only having less than a week to visit this beautiful, stunning area of CA, I found this book to be indispensable. It made a short trip a quality trip by the descriptions of everything in and around Monterey. I loved the photography as well! Although my trip was nearly 2 years ago, I still flip thru this book on occasion to dream about my next trip, and YES I'm going back! There is so much I that I missed due to my short stay, but thanks to this book I got to see my preffered highlights and I wouldn't change a thing.

Monterey is a very visually stunning area, my absolute favorite having visited in the US so far, and this book is a great way to ensure you see what you want to see.

Nooks and Crannies

Like the English Muffin, the Monterey Shoreline is filled with nooks and crannies. (And, at the height of the season, they can be jammed. Heh, Heh). This book is especially helpful in guiding you to some of the least accessible but most worthwhile stretches. It's not inaccessible in the sense that you need a four-wheel drive vehicle to plow your way to the site; rather, some of these beaches are so tucked away that you could miss them, or spy them but not be able to figure out how to get to them. (Eolian Dunes Preserve may be partially visible from Route 1, but it is accessible on a path under Route 1 that you reach from a parking area on the warehouse access road behind Orchard Supply in Seaside. This book tells you to go there, corner of Playa and Metz.) This book helps you choose your spots, and then get to them.

While I like the trail descriptions and access guidance, I also appreciate the fact that this book is loaded with bits of historical info, and tips on what evidence of human activity to look for. Not to mention loads of info on the flora and fauna of the area.

The book is also very helpful as a sampler. there are good sections on Elkhorn Slough and the opening up of Ford Ord. You can find lots more info on these sites on the internet,but this book will be the one to get you interested in those areas initially.

So, a great companion and a wonderful insider introduction to the area. And great for an armchair explorer getting ready to visit the Bay. A very nice find.

Comprehensive & Thoroughly Researched Book on a Narrow Topic

Prior to picking up this book, I had very little knowledge of the struggle for equal nationality rights for women in America. From the mid 1850's until the 1920's, married women had citizenship & nationality rights that were completely derivative of their husband's. And prior to 1934, American women could lose their citizenship for marrying foreign husbands. Bredbenner's book presents a comprehensive look at the impact of the derivative nationality doctrine on American-born and immigrant women, and the political struggles of the women's nationality rights movement. While it does not provide much context in terms of the broader feminist & women's suffrage movement, readers with a serious interest in history, law or feminism will appreciate the depth of Bredbenner's examination of this specific topic.

An important study in the grant of rights to women and their recognition as holders of rights

An vital book, the publication of Bredbenner's Ph.D. thesis. It's of a kind with Lucy E. Salyer's "Laws Harsh As Tigers: Chinese Immigrants and the Shaping of Modern Immigration Law" in explaining historical discrimination in nationality law and its more recent, partial, correction through (in the case at hand) the Cable Act of 1922 reversing the Supreme Court's holding in Techt v. Hughes. Large collection of WB translations

Wilhelm Busch has long been a household name in German-speaking countries, but since an appreciation of his art requires both viewing his artwork and reading the (German) verse, he is less well-known outside of those countries. Speaking enough German to "get the gist" of the stories, I nevertheless appreciated the two slim volumes of translations (by H.A Klein) published by Dover over 50 years ago.
While the present anthology does not provide side-by-side English and German versions as the previous translations did, it does contain additional material including extended prose and poetry selections, and since the selection of translated materials does not greatly overlap, the 3 editions complement each other nicely. Since the German originals rely on understanding of certain cultural contexts at times, the translations are sometimes a bit "stretched", but the sing-song rhythm of the verse is maintained.
This book contains a long opening essay on Wilhelm Busch (partly literary criticism), that I found to be rather dense reading. The volume also contains a biographical list of important events in WB's life.

A nicely produced, sewn, cloth-bound book, good paper; this is definitely worth purchasing if you would like to bring the humor and satire of Wilhelm Busch to non-German speakers.
