AMAZING

This book is amazing, inspiring, wonderful. I was so uninterested in the topic of soil before I took a required class in which this book was mentioned. The author, Hillel, discusses the earth from many different points of view, mythological, anthropological, philosophical, ecological, and, of course, scientific. He tells us why the fertile crescent is no longer fertile and about similar destruction we're wreaking on our own bread basket lands right now... Surprisingly, this is an easy book to read. I read many parts of it outloud to friends. Now when I walk I am aware of the life teeming under each step I take...

This is a very well written study of the intersection of soil and civilization: Mankind's effect on the life-supporting soil around them, and the usually terminal effect of the degraded soil upon mankind. Hillel has a wonderful voice and solid credentials. As Santana said, remember your history or pay the price.

An Astounding Resource

For anyone researching the French Revolution this book would be an invaluable resource. Quotes, statistics and geographical interpretation of the riots, all are included in the realistic, sometimes tantalizing look at the struggles of Parisian women and their roles in the French Revolution. Not just a fleshed out version of a history texts after-thought, as happens so many times with books about the women or minorities of history - this book gives us the real forces behind some of the major events of the revolution - forces that include the demands of disenfranchised women eager to take part in the new Sovereignty of the people.

The tons of research done by Godineau shows not only in the immense bibliography but also in the completeness of the themes discussed in the book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the French Revolution or the history of Women.

This scrutiny of the class, race, gender, ethnic, or ideological biases of ideas and practices inherent in the notion of planning as a modernist social technology clearly points to the inadequacy of modernist planning histories. Making the Invisible Visible redefines planning as the regulation of the physicality, sociality, and spatiality of the city. Its histories provide the foundation of a new, alternative planning paradigm for the multicultural cities of the future.

Good book, but not for an introduction to Taoism

I have sat through 2 lectures of Prof. Bokenkamp and found that his knowledge of Eastern thought has followed through in this book. Though not for a person looking for an introduction into Taoist thought, this book is informative in the fact that it has content I have not found in other books. Also, the book is written more for a western audience, which isnt necessarily bad, but Prof. Bokenkamp has taken some liberties with the English language that may have been better kept in Chinese context. For those with a background in Taoism, I recommend this book. Others might want to try the Tao Te Ching first to gain insight into what Taoism is about.

This is a collection of Taoist canon books from the early Mao shan, Showing the Spiritualistic roots of the Taoist religion before it was sanitized by those who could not trance or perform as the founders did. It is easy to say and think that everyone is the same but some have improved themselves so much we say they are myths. History is a joy when you can see the ideas of the best minds that lived and the poetry of their lives expressed in these texts. I enjoyed the Purple texts especially as a map to the higher mind.
To those of you who study the Source enjoy, I did.

In one of the best recent books on South Africa, an American vividly recalls his experiences as a white teacher of black students near Cape Town and intersperses more detached descriptions of what was going on under apartheid. Finnegan wanted attentive, disciplined students at the same time that he encouraged in them a radical skepticism, a critical, independent habit of mind, a combative approach to all forms of vested authority. He tried to counsel his students to aim high and work hard, and he often met with hostility. Within that one year, he became acutely aware of how rapidly they were becoming more active in boycotts and protests and forming an essential element of a growing revolutionary movement. He shows how the Afrikaners' hatred for African children has led to bloody massacres and how their fear is an unspoken, unconscious recognition that communal violence is retribution for the countless blacks killed and maimed over the years. A final section describing Finnegan's long hitch-hiking trip with a bitter, white-hating, 18-year-old black woman beautifully shows the apartheid situation in microcosm.

An absorbing look at life in Apartheid-era South Africa

William Finnegan, an American, has authored an utterly absorbing look at life - particularly black life - in Apartheid-era South Africa. As an American intimately familiar with the political culture of that troubled country, it and the resistance it engendered is an ongoing source of wonder that the South Africa of 2007 could have emerged as a "light unto the world" given the violence, racism and depravity of its first three centuries of history.

When this volume was written, Nelson Mandela was a Robben Island prisoner, P.W. Botha was president of the world's preeminent para-fascist and unashamedly racist state, and black aspirations toward freedom, equality and dignity were answered with the bullet, the bullwhip and the hangman's noose.

"Crossing the Line" provides important and compelling insights: the sights, smells and sounds of everyday life in the face of oppression that can only be labelled monstrous, the unimaginable courage of the people - particularly the children - that fought it, and the desperate, despicable character of those who sought to keep in place a system whose evil and efficiency have only been rivaled by the likes of the Third Reich.

Finnegan's account of life in a "coloured" suburb of Capetown is sensitive and poignant. The reader is drawn into his wonderfully textured account of some essential elements of life in apartheid South Africa.

I would unhesitatingly recommend this book to any American who seeks to understand what precisely apartheid was and how it functioned, particularly to students (Finnegan chronicles in detail his year of teaching in a Capetown "coloured" high school) interested in world affairs, current events, civil rights, and the use and limitations of civil disobedience. It is a brilliantly uplifting and powerful story, offering the reader a textured account of the indomitability of the human spirit.

An insightful outsiders' view of South Africa

Finnegan's discovery of life in Cape Flats, S.A. is poignant and thoughtful. As the reader, you are drawn into his understanding as he captures some essential elements of life in apartheid South Africa. The rampant racism, segregation and human misery contrasts remarkably with the "other side of the tracks." I teach African studies in high school and have always used this novel to bring to life the educational system of the old South Africa and the disparities that persist there. Finnegan's thoughtful, caring concern for his students becomes evident in his approach to his writing...in the care he takes to bring Cape Town & Flats to the reader. Wonderful book!

Fantastic!

I read this book about fifteen years ago and even after all these years, the power of the words and images has stayed with me. It is an amazing story and provides important and compelling insights. It gives the reader a true sense of being there -- in South Africa -- under apartheid. Reading this book truly changed my life. I was 15 when I read it and it enabled me to fully understand the issues and challenges that people all over the world face.
I would recommend it to high school students interested in world affairs, current events, history, civil rights, African history, or civil disobedience. I would recommend it to the college student and the adult.
I think it is a must-read. It is a moving, uplifting, powerful story. It is an example of how the human spirit can overcome all. Enjoy!

Babb explores the ritual culture of image-worshipping Svetambar Jains of the western Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Jainism traces its lineages back to the ninth century B.C.E. and is, along with Buddhism, the only surviving example of India's ancient non-Vedic religious traditions. It is known and celebrated for its systematic practice of non-violence and for the intense rigor of the asceticism it promotes. A unique aspect of Babb's study is his linking of the Jain tradition to the social identity of existing Jain communities.

Babb concludes by showing that Jain ritual culture can be seen as a variation on pan-Indian ritual patterns. In illuminating this little-known religious tradition, he demonstrates that divine "absence" can be as rich as divine "presence" in its possibilities for informing a religious response to the cosmos.

An excellent answer to a fascintating question

In this work, Babb asks an interesting question. Why would Jains fast and starve themselves when they believe that the beings they worship are not only unaware of their existence but also can in no way help them even if they wanted? It is a fascinating book that explores this as well as ritual in jain culture. It is based mostly on the authors work in India. It is quite descriptive and can be understood by all as he expains many aspects of Jainist thought.
In addition to describing the various rituals in play, the author also gives a very thorough explanation of the dieties and their roles. Furthermore, he effectively compares Jainism with Hinduism and Buddhism making the distinction much clearer. This is a difficult task when dealing with Indian religions. Finally, Babb does an excellent job of incorporating the ideas and stories of the people he interviewed into the work.

An indispensable resource!

This is a great resource for anyone trying to navigate the health care system and dealing with long term care. Another great resource is a website called Facility Resource Group dot org. They provide little known government funded entitlement benefits for skilled care in California. Through this program you can protect your assets rather than spending them down to qualify for aid or spending your hard earned resources to pay for skilled care. The government will provide for skilled care and this website will assist you with the process. Its a great resource!

I lost my copy and was so glad to replace it. If you are interested in this cookbook which is very good you may want to consider buying Campbell's Creative cooking with soup: over 19,000 delicious mix and match recipes. It has all the recipes of the "over 8,000" plus a lot more. The recipes are easy to make and don't have any weird ingredients that you will have to search for.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!

This is one of my all time favorite cookbooks. My copy is 20 years old! I have both this one and the hardback expanded version (but I actually prefer the softcover).

The recipes are set up with a list of ingredients, including mix and match for several items (i.e. you pick what type of soup, pasta, meat, cheese, seasoning, etc. from a list of suggestions). Any of their combinations are supposed to work well together. It's especially nice for novice cooks who are nervous of experimentation, as it really helps you gain confidence and it gives you ideas for what to do if you are out of an ingredient.

I have tried SEVERAL recipes out of this booklet and almost every one of them has been very good. So far I have tried Mexican Style Appetizer, Chili, Pasta and Bean Soup, Easy Pot Roast, Stir Fried Beef and Vegetables, Souper Enchiladas, Meatball Stew, Chicken Paprika, Chicken Stuffing Bake (one of hubby's all time favorite casseroles), Pasta with White Seafood Sauce (one of the few recipes we didn't care for), Vegetables Oriental, and Broccoli & Noodles Parmesgan. Even with that long list, there are still a lot of recipes that I want to try including, Cheese Stuffed Vegetables, Teriyaki Beef Kabobs, Baked Chicken Florida, Vegetable Lasagna, Skillet Potatoes, Savory Pilaf, and others.

I have five shelves of cooking books and this is by far one of my favorites. Overall the recipes are very easy and quick and mostly use common ingredients that I already have in my pantry and freezer. As I am sure you can tell by the list, there are plenty of "comfort" foods and what I think of as real home cooking. I would have to add the caveat though that for the most part I can't call them healthy recipes (although I make substitutions where I can like fat free mayo, Healthy Request cream soups, etc.)

My most recent recipe attempt was Best Ever Meatloaf and it was quite yummy.

I absolutely encourage you to try this book, especially if you are nervous about making substitutions when you cook. It will make you much more comfortable!!!
