"Mama Told Me Not to Come" - Achilles....Oops Randy Newman

I stumbled on to this work by Laura M. Slatin as part of a bibliography in the book "The War That Killed Achilles" by Caroline Alexander. In Caroline's book she compares Thetis to today's mother in the context of war. A mother's love can make a difference in a short life.

In this book, "The Power of Thetis", even though from the title would have you think that it's just a reinterpretation of the Iliad, Laura M. Slatin goes out of her way to compare and contrast stories of Thetis with stories of Eos; in doing so she weaves in out of the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Aethiopis, and related works to the Trojan cycle.

The book itself is a very quick read but it leaves you with new insights as to who Thetis really is and leaves you wanting for more.

Unlike many other books on the subject she also includes the original Greek. Now it looks like on going to have to learn Greek because I really want to have a feel for the original writing that was probably lost in interpretation.

Oh no, this book also has an extended bibliography!

Clever, Digestable...and with an Unexpected Bonus for Me

There's not one wasted word in this little opus, and I was fascinated by a perspective on Homer that I'd never thought of before.
Okay...I know I really shouldn't say this, but there's another reason why this book is dear to my heart, so I'll leave serious comment on the contents of this book to others.
The evening after I read Power of Thetis I had to go to this stuffy dinner party. Anyway, there was this really interesting woman there--really hot, too. It was driving me nuts just sitting next to her. Normally she wouldn't have looked twice at the likes of me, but it turned out that she was really into Greek literature. Well, I'm no Homerist but since I had just read this book and its arguments were really lucid and easy reccounted, I was able to get into this intense conversation with her about Achilles. It was really cool. And the end result was that she went home with me. Thank God for books like this.

Born in Moscow in 1941, Wieseltier spent the first years of his life, during the war, as a refugee in Siberia, then again in Europe. He settled in Tel-Aviv a few years after coming to Israel in 1949 and has lived there ever since. A master of both comedy and irony, Wieseltier has written powerful poems of social and political protest in Israel, poems that are painfully timeless. His voice is alternately anarchic and involved, angry and caring, trenchant and lyric.

So begins Volume 4 of the letters, with Samuel Clemens anticipating his wedding to Olivia L. Langdon. The 338 letters in this volume document the first two years of a loving marriage that would last more than thirty years. They recount, in Clemens's own inimitable voice, a tumultuous time: a growing international fame, the birth of a sickly first child, and the near-fatal illness of his wife.

At the beginning of 1870, fresh from the success of The Innocents Abroad, Clemens is on "the long agony" of a lecture tour and planning to settle in Buffalo as editor of the Express. By the end of 1871, he has moved to Hartford and is again on tour, anticipating the publication of Roughing It and the birth of his second child. The intervening letters show Clemens bursting with literary ideas, business schemes, and inventions, and they show him erupting with frustration, anger, and grief, but more often with dazzling humor and surprising self-revelation. In addition to Roughing It, Clemens wrote some enduringly popular short pieces during this period, but he saved some of his best writing for private letters, many of which are published here for the first time.

With more than half published here for the first time, the 338 letters in the most recent volume of this meticulously edited and richly illustrated edition of Twain's letters cover only two years of his long, prolific life. But during those years, at ages 34 and 35, he first swore off the lecture circuit, then changed his mind; married Olivia Langdon and spent the first years of their long marriage?in the $40,000 house given them by Mr. Langdon?idolizing her and comforting her when she fell victim to typhoid fever and gave birth to a sickly son. By this time The Innocents Abroad was earning him $1300 a month, he was part-owner of the Buffalo Express newspaper, and money flowed in from other sources. But Twain was a man on the make?with an expensive lifestyle. In these letters, charged with nervous energy, he urged his increasingly hapless brother Orion to pursue promising inventions, complained about mediocre lecture fees, talked business schemes with his publisher, and inadvertently revealed the agonizingly slow evolution of Roughing It. Scholarly Book for those looking for a deeper understanding off the tradition

This book is not an entertaining book at all. It isn't intended to be one. The authors are very studied men who have devoted more time than anyone else in forming healthy, respectful relationships with serpent handlers. This reads like a textbook or a thesis paper so be sure you are looking for scholarly reading if you purchase this. My hat goes off to these men for their work sociological work and the deep respect that they show to those about whom they are writing.

Re-imaging the netherworld

In this book, Stephen Bokenkamp deals with the arrival of Buddhism to China and its effects on native Chinese conceptions of death and the afterlife. He traces a shift between Eastern Han conceptions of death, which treat ancestral worship as a private matter and stress the ability of the ancestors to influence the world of the living, and the ideas of life and death that can be found in the Religious Daoist texts from the 5th century CE, which depict ancestral worship as a public endeavor and stresses not what the ancestors can do for the living but that duties the living have to do to ensure their fate. Buddhism, argues Bokenkamp, gave the Chinese new tool in dealing with this anxiety through the idea of rebirth.
This is definitely not an easy book to read, mostly since it is intended for a fairly small target audience who is probably already familiar with Bokenkamp's immense contribution to the study of Chinese religion. Readers who are interested in the history of religion in China will find this book an excellent addition to a rapidly growing field.

A major contribution!

A masterful study of a perennial theme in Chinese religion. Bokenkamp has zeroed in on an important concept for studying the fruitful cross-fermentation between Buddhism and Daoism in early medieval China. The book brilliantly elucidates the broader social and politcal dynamics that fostered the religious developments. The range of genres studied is admirably broad: poetry, liturgies, narratives, historical sources, and other forms of literature. This book will surely be consulted as the definitive, classic account for many years to come. While it is certainly not bedtime reading material, it is nonetheless an eminently readable work fairly accessible to readers (like myself) whose native language is not English.

In Relativity: The Special and the General Theory, Einstein describes the theories that made him famous, illuminating his case with numerous examples and a smattering of math (nothing more complex than high-school algebra). Einstein's book is not casual reading, but for those who appreciate his work without diving into the arcana of theoretical physics, Relativity will prove a stimulating read.

"The present book is intended," Einstein wrote in 1916, "as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics.... In the interest of clearness, it appeared to me inevitable that I should repeat myself frequently, without paying the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation. I adhered scrupulously to the precept of that brilliant theoretical physicist L. Boltzmann, according to whom matters of elegance ought to be left to the tailor and to the cobbler." But it is elegant, in part because of the 1920 translation, by Robert W. Lawson, a British physicist who had polished his German while a prisoner of war in Austria. The Best Way to Discredit Any Work

Before buying have read reviews. There are 49 out of 86 five star ones. So opted to buy to get a chance to touch the work of a genius. It never happened though. The book begins with text references to Fig. 1, Fig 2, Fig. 3, etc. No such diagrams.....Nada, just empty spaces... As a matter of fact, not a single drawing in the book! I mean, the book is reprinted with NO crucial accompanying the text drawings. Probably, the latter were in a separate file which they didn't copyright to make it cheaper, anyway it rendered the book useless. I would've sentenced the editor to a jail time.
Ah...here it is: Publisher: General Books LLC (August 19, 2009) ISBN-10: 0217982360 ISBN-13: 978-0217982368
"We recreated the book from the original using Optical Character Recognition to keep the cost of the book as low as possible. Therefore could you please forgive...etc. "
What they're apologizing here for is that they have committed a fraud. And "Look Inside" browser feacher shows you another book edition!
In hindsight, I suspect most 5-4 star reviews are fictitious...OR... they combined all reviews from different publications into one file. Buyer be aware!

Update: Yep, Amazon throws DIFFERENT reviews of the same book under DIFFERENT publications (Einstein, Relativity), and DIFFERENT publications of DIFFERENT books of the SAME author (Albert Einstein, Relativity - The Special and The General Theory) in ONE big deceitful pile.

be careful which copy you buy

Do not buy the copy of this book with ISBN 978-1452841212 !!! You have been warned! The equations which are set out as images (ie any that require more than simple typesetting) have not been printed, and the text just shows the file name instead eg. eq1.gif. I can't believe that they're selling this book! The other copies are ok from what I have seen on the preview pages.

Einstein is also a genius at teaching

Most scientific genius' are poor at communicating their ideas to lay people who aren't versed in their high level math and vocabulary. Einstein, on the other hand, is superb at explaining the complex in simple, non scientific, non mathematical, and NON CONDESCENDING terms! While, obviously, I am against any government forced reading list, if there were one, I'd put this one at or near number one on any such list. It should certainly be required reading for all colledge graduates, regardless of their major.
Park your preconceived ideas of what you *used to* think what the universe was and prepare to be blown away at this incredible "theory" (It should no longer be called a theory as it has been proven over and over in real world experiment after emperiment)! It will certainly open your mind to new possibilities and to new ideas of what the universe is (or at least, what it *isn't*).
After reading this, go get "Quantum Electro Dynamics", a colleciton of lectures by Richard P. Feynman, to continue your maddening journey through wacky, but true, insights into what's *really* going on and what this universe really is about. It really is a quantum leap forward in thinking. You'll just have to read it to believe it (possibly several times).
After that, search Amazon.com for information about faster than light transmission for even more mind blowing ideas that are becoming a reality.
If you thought science fiction was way out there, wait til you learn about science fact! Science truly is stranger than fiction.
