The Railway Journey: The Industrialization of Time and Space in the 19th Century, by Wolfgang Schivelbusch

The impact of constant technological change upon our perception of the world is so pervasive as to have become a commonplace of modern society. But this was not always the case; as Wolfgang Schivelbusch points out in this fascinating study, our adaptation to technological change—the development of our modern, industrialized consciousness—was very much a learned behavior. In The Railway Journey, Schivelbusch examines the origins of this industrialized consciousness by exploring the reaction in the nineteenth century to the first dramatic avatar of technological change, the railroad.

In a highly original and engaging fashion, Schivelbusch discusses the ways in which our perceptions of distance, time, autonomy, speed, and risk were altered by railway travel. As a history of the surprising ways in which technology and culture interact, this book covers a wide range of topics, including the changing perception of landscapes, the death of conversation while traveling, the problematic nature of the railway compartment, the space of glass architecture, the pathology of the railway journey, industrial fatigue and the history of shock, and the railroad and the city.

Belonging to a distinguished European tradition of critical sociology best exemplified by the work of Georg Simmel and Walter Benjamin, The Railway Journey is anchored in rich empirical data and full of striking insights about railway travel, the industrial revolution, and technological change. Now updated with a new preface, The Railway Journey is an invaluable resource for readers interested in nineteenth-century culture and technology and the prehistory of modern media and digitalization.

Amazon.com Review
Because it made possible rapid movement and shipping across large distances, joining far-off towns to economic and cultural capitals, many people who lived in the early 19th century regarded the railroad as an instrument of progress. Because anyone with the price of a ticket could board a train, regardless of social class, the railroad was also seen as a democratizing technology.

But, Wolfgang Schivelbusch notes in this vivid history of early rail travel, the promise of progress and democracy was swiftly compromised. The railroads became an agency for the concentration of wealth in a few hands, and they created a class of passive consumers who simply got aboard and waited to arrive at their destinations. The railroads, Schivelbusch writes, changed the 19th-century world for good and ill. They helped rewrite the industrializing world's sense of time, for now precise schedules had to be kept; they reinforced a sense of forward-plunging movement into the future; they even introduced the reality of mass disaster, for railroads were always crashing, sometimes taking hundreds of riders to their deaths.

Delving into urban planning, psychology, architecture, and economics, as well as the history of technology, Schivelbusch paints a revealing portrait of the role of the railroad in shaping the 19th-century mind. --Gregory McNamee

Review
This delightful, probing, and very quirky book is, surprisingly, a pioneering work in the sociology and psychopathology of the railway revolution. . . Whats more, its a gas. -- The Village Voice

An interesting read, but taken too far
By Gr422
The book had a lot of interesting information on the original trains, and that was worth the read, but some of this theories just don't make any sense.

I get the feeling he's too willing to dislike modernization, it's one thing to say how some people disliked or were afraid of the train (the "railway spine" disease made me chuckle) but it's quite another thing to blame the railroads for everything from loss of culture to ruining cities. That is a very powerful claim but he does not seem to back it up with any real evidence. I want to see pictures of what the cities looked before and after, some statistics on income, something. You cannot make that claim without some sort of evidence.

As for the alleged social side effects, I don't know how he would know that. I think that's a sweeping generalization even in its best form, and I can't really see how there could be any sort of means to show, definitively, that EVERY city that has a railroad has lost its culture due only to the railroad being there. I can't even imagine what kind of evidence would back that up.

I really like the history part of it, the facts are painstakingly researched and captivating to read

If it were truly a history book I would have given it five stars, easily. But the book is about his theories of time and space and the railroad, so, unfortunately, I can't give him a good rating, because the central purpose of his novel is far too undersupported and weakly argued.

Superb book that demonstrates how railroads and industrialization changed Western culture
By Sage Ross
The Railway Journey is a straightforward but deceptively sophisticated work of social/cultural history that chronicles the rise of train travel and the effect this had on perceptions of space, time, travel, commerce, and ultimately 'modernity' (though the author avoids that loaded term). Schivelbusch draws mainly from primary sources and presents arguments about how significantly train travel affect the consciousness of 19th century travelers, and how the effects differed in America and Europe. The strength of the book lies in Schivelbusch's mastery of the details; the reader discovers exactly why British rails were straight while American rails curved around the landscape... the answers are rooted firmly in the economic differences between the two nations. And you learn about how the imprints of class structure differed for British and American train passengers, because British train cars evolved from stagecoaches while American train cars emulated river steamships.

The goal of so many histories of science and technology is to show the connections between the physical, technical world of scientists and engineers and the broader cultural world, and how the connections run both ways. Of course it is usually easy to show how science and technology change culture, but much harder to show profound influences of culture on science and technology. But Schivelbusch does just that, and does so with crisp writing and very clear evidence; his conclusions are often profound, yet it is very hard to take issue with the connections he makes.

Another reviewer recommends Kern's Culture of Time and Space over this book; while Kern takes a much broader view of the connections between culture and science, his work is so loosely constructed that it is hard to take his overreaching conclusions seriously. In particularly, Kern has a very thin understanding of the history of science (especially regarding the technical details), which frequently undermines his narrative. The Railway Journey is far more satisfying; it is a model of how cultural history of science can be done without ignoring the actual history of actual science.

Fascinating study of the cultural repercussions of new technologies
By John H. Teeple
Recently I've developed a taste for cultural histories that examine the influence of new technologies on the perception of nature, space, time, individuality (etc., etc.) The railroad is a prime example of a technology that, once adopted, profoundly altered how people perceived and interacted with their world. (And, in a very real sense, created a new world.) The railroad 'collapsed' space and time, opened up new lands to settlement (and new resources to exploitation), and inaugurated a new era of technologically-mediated experiences of nature.

Wolfgang Schivelbusch's book is not only a good, concise history of the railroad (focusing on England and the United States), but a pioneering study in the cultural impacts of new technologies. It's a bit old, and in places shows its age, but is an excellent place to start for readers who share my interest in the culture/technology interface. What is particularly valuable is the realization that many of the cultural shifts associated with 'postmodernity' today (particularly 'time-space compression') are in fact rooted in such eminently modernist achievements as the railroad and (contemporaneously) the telegraph.

Also valuable is Schivelbusch's discussion of resistance to the railroad. While early promoters had the idea of reorganizing transportation (of both goods and people) through a widespread adoption of rail, there were just as many - and just as vocal - dissenters. Opponents of this new technology were concerned that it would further isolate people from nature. The relentless motion of the train displaced the feelings of fatigue and physical exertion that come with long-distance travel; the speed of the train turned landscape into simply passing scenery. (In other words: the same arguments that people had and continue to have about the cultural impacts of the automobile were already taking place nearly 200 years ago!)

To continue a thread of discussion in these reviews, I suggest that a book like this (and Schivelbusch's other excellent work on technology: "Disenchanted Night: The Industrialization of Light in the Nineteenth Century") be read alongside broader histories like Stephen Kern's "The Culture of Time and Space", and more focused studies of technology like David Landes' "Revolution in Time." The weakness and strength of Schivelbusch's study, when read along with these other works, is its conciseness. Schivelbusch does not delve very deeply into concurrent technologies; nor does he make broad generalizations or indulge in speculation (however warranted that may be). Instead he culls nuggets of insight from original sources and provides enough interpretation to whet the reader's appetite - perhaps for their own researches.

Well written, well argued, and a quick read.

Friends, Brothers and Informants: Fieldwork Memoirs of Banaras, by Nita Kumar

"Why was Banaras such a mystery to me when I arrived in 1981? Was it ironically because I was an Indian and expected to have a privileged insight into it?"

In this unusually personal, evocative account of her fieldwork experiences, Kumar tackles the dilemma of how a Western-trained Indian intellectual adapts to the field and builds deeply affecting relationships with strangers. She discloses what it is like to be a native researching her own culture, offering her fieldwork memoirs in all their spontaneity and candor.

We see Banaras through her eyes when she first arrives: throngs of people, cramped and dark lodgings, unappetizing food, mischievous monkeys, and almost overwhelming filth. But as she establishes friendships, we are treated to her discoveries not only about the city and its people, but also about her place in this society.

The familiar problems that face most anthropologists conducting fieldwork—of Self versus Other, objectivity versus bias, familiar circumstances versus new and dismaying ones—are given a surprising and complex dimension. Through a narration of her own experiences, the author demonstrates how personal locations—habits, preferences, expectations deriving from childhood memories, and areas of ignorance—impose themselves on the process of selection, observation, and interpretation in research.

Composition: A Series of Exercises in Art Structure for the Use of Students and Teachers, by Arthur Wesley Dow

First published in 1899, Arthur Wesley Dow's Composition has probably influenced more Americans than any other text to think of visual form and composition in relation to artistic modernity. While Dow is known as the mentor of Georgia O'Keeffe and Max Weber, his legacy as a proponent of modern art has suffered undeserved neglect by recent artists and art historians.

In Composition Dow develops a system for teaching students to create freely constructed images on the basis of harmonic relations between lines, colors, and dark and light patterns. Greatly influenced by Japanese art, he expounds a theory of "flat" formal equilibrium as an essential component of telling pictorial creation. Generations of teachers and their public school pupils learned from Dow's orientalism and adopted basic postimpressionist principles without even knowing the term. The reappearance of Dow's practical, well-illustrated guide, enhanced by Joseph Masheck's discussion of its historical ramifications, is an important event for all concerned with the visual arts and the intellectual antecedents of American modernism.

Designing, *doing* & *putting together* Compositions
By Marie Kazalia
This version of the vintage text on composition--that the artist Georgia O'Keefe, and no doubt many other artists of note studied in their day--comes with an amazingly well written and profoundly useful lengthly Introduction by the multi-gifted philosophizing art historian Joseph Masheck.

After reading only the first few pages of Masheck's fast-paced concisely intelligent writing, I was hooked, and ordered his book on Cezanne--titled *C's Aesthetics* --which I have now completed reading, and am working on re-reading the section specific to certain of Cezanne's paintings so as to compare Macheck's analysis with repro's of the specified paintings by *C*.

So, I am very glad that I bought this version of the Dow Composition book, for that Macheck Intro alone.

Also, Macheck states, in his Intro, reasons for recommending artists & art students revisit this older written work on Composition by Dow--to the effect that those from younger generations were born into abstraction and do not understand how it came about--that there once was a time when only in the work of Cezanne was anything like the current (and past Cubism) styles of abstraction even suggested and made possible--and so a study of Dow's *Composition* is a way of revisiting those times so as to expand one's understanding, appreciation.... and output as a working artist...

After completing the Macheck Intro to Dow's *Composition*, I began to read the vintage text portion and do the exercises---and right away, with the first exercise, felt amazed at how much the ink line brushwork helped me on many levels. I had never done Asia style ink brushwork before--it was not something taught in the California art school where I studied for my degree (perhaps considered old-fashioned) and though I have seen many examples of Japanese & Chinese painting & brush style calligraphy in museums in those countries and in the USA-- seeing, studying, thinking about something does not replace doing, as Dow reminds in Section III of his *Composition* book---"artistic skill cannot be given by dictation or acquired by reading."

And so it may be beyond words to explain exactly how doing the exercises benefits and how those benefits come about--such as in using the exercises and new understandings as *jumping off points* in creating studies and fully realized art works...

The definitive book on the subject
By A Customer
Having read the earlier review, I felt it necessary to chime in. The introduction, which I skipped, was lengthy, but there's a lot of information in the main text of the book- enough to warrant the price. It's as much a workbook as a text since there are suggested exercises to follow. There are also lots of pictures of examples which I found very helpful. Dow "wrote the book" on composition, and this is it!

Icons of Life: A Cultural History of Human Embryos, by Lynn Morgan

Icons of Life tells the engrossing and provocative story of an early twentieth-century undertaking, the Carnegie Institution of Washington's project to collect thousands of embryos for scientific study. Lynn M. Morgan blends social analysis, sleuthing, and humor to trace the history of specimen collecting. In the process, she illuminates how a hundred-year-old scientific endeavor continues to be felt in today's fraught arena of maternal and fetal politics. Until the embryo collecting project-which she follows from the Johns Hopkins anatomy department, through Baltimore foundling homes, and all the way to China-most people had no idea what human embryos looked like. But by the 1950s, modern citizens saw in embryos an image of “ourselves unborn,” and embryology had developed a biologically based story about how we came to be. Morgan explains how dead specimens paradoxically became icons of life, how embryos were generated as social artifacts separate from pregnant women, and how a fetus thwarted Gertrude Stein's medical career. By resurrecting a nearly forgotten scientific project, Morgan sheds light on the roots of a modern origin story and raises the still controversial issue of how we decide what embryos mean.

From the Inside Flap
"Fascinating! Icons of Life is an account of how we have come to know ourselves as ourselves, both a compelling human origin story and an engaging tale of intellectual curiosity, biological specimens, reproductive politics, and science. Morgan draws skillfully on her ethnographic toolkit to reveal the social context of embryology alongside the cultural and scientific work of crafting objective 'facts of life' from unremarkable flesh."—Monica J. Casper, author of The Making of the Unborn Patient

"How do scientists convert people into things? Lynn Morgan's book takes the reader on a wonderfully eerie tour through the cultural history of a macabre science, that of collecting human embryos. Not only is it an immensely valuable contribution to the anthropology of science, but it represents at the same time an extended hand across the field of anthropology, where the remains of human beings are still commonly passed around tables of undergraduate students—inviting us to reconsider the nature of our own scientific specimens."—Jonathan Marks, author of Why I Am Not A Scientist

About the Author
Lynn M. Morgan is Mary E. Woolley Professor of Anthropology at Mount Holyoke College and is coeditor (with Meredith W. Michaels) of Fetal Subjects, Feminist Positions.

Creative, disorienting, compelling! Morgan exhumes important history
By RC
Lynn Morgan creatively presents early 20th century embryo science and society in ways that invite us to see embryos, fetuses and their progenitors (women, men, scientists alike) in new and productively disorienting ways. She cleverly builds on feminist social science literature and highlights exciting areas for explorations. For instance, she challenges scholars to explore the "hidden sources" of embryo production, asking how they came to exist and were materialized. This, in itself, is a compelling directive, though the details of her historical ethnography makes the best argument for how to do this and why it is so important. The stories of Mrs. R and Carnegie no. 836 so strikingly and smartly show how invisibilized women's labor and contributions to embryo collecting were. Illustrating this through documenting the multiple dead-ends in Mrs. R's history - like facing the sad fact that Morgan could not find her gravestone in the hills of West Virginia - helps to re-entangle Mrs. R with Carnegie no. 836's long and well-documented story.

Icons of Life is solid and intriguing scholarship that gives readers a lot to think about in our contemporary "embryo-centric political climate." Also, as a teacher, I look forward to using this book to help complicate and put into relief some deeply entrenched assumptions about fetuses, women, life/death, and science. The clarity of Morgan's argument and the abundance of engaging examples makes this text well-suited for the classroom.

Big Girl in the Middle, by Gabrielle Reece

Her name is Gabrielle, but mostly she is called Gabby or Gab. She possesses a look that conveys both athleticism and feminine beauty. She is 27, 6'3", and a Nike spokesperson for women's athletics. A professional athlete (Women's Beach Volleyball Leagues 4-Woman Tour), Gab's face can be seen on the cover of Outside, Shape, Elle, Fitness, Volleyball, Self, Men's Fitness, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue, as well as other magazines. Big Girl In The Middle, her first book, co-authored with Karen Karbo, explores her life as a professional athlete and beyond. From 1994 to 1995, Gabby was a contributing editor at Elle magazine, writing her own sports and fitness column. In the fall of 1997, she will begin writing a column for Conde Nast Sports for Women. On television, Gabby won a huge number of fans by taking risks while road-luging, white-water kayaking, drag racing, and much more on MTV Sports (1993-1996), and The Extremists(1995-1996).

A Florida State star turned pro, Gabby is now in her fifth season as a team captain, and her fourth captaining Team Nike in the W.B.V.L. Gabby's peers voted her Offensive Player of the year in 1995 and 1994, and Most Improved Player in 1994. She was only a sophomore at Florida State University when Elle named her one of the five most beautiful women in the world in 1989, the same year her coach said that "Gabby likes to hit the ball hard and put it back in somebody's face." The lure of the smash is still with her: in 1992 she was named MVP of the 4-Woman Volleyball Tour, in 1993, League blocks leader, and, in 1997, she's the League kills leader for the fourth consecutive year. "I enjoy getting the ball to go exactly where I want it, at the speed I want it to go." says Gab.

She was born in California to a mother from Long Island and a father from Trinidad, who died when she was five years old. Her trademark piece of jewelry (copied from a tattoo inside her right ankle) is a stylized silver cross like the one he wore on the day he was killed in an airplane crash. Raised on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, Gabby didn't take up volleyball until she was sent to high school in St. Petersburg, Florida. She won an athletic scholarship to Florida State, where she majored in Communications (Media Performance) and played two seasons of volleyball before accepting any offers from the modeling world. In January 1989, she took off to model in New York. In August she was back at Florida State for the volleyball season. As a junior, she was named the nation's Most Inspiring Collegiate Athlete by the Dodge National Athletic Awards Committee, and All-Metro and All-South Region at FSU.

In its first television spot with Gabby, Nike introduced her as the "female Bo Jackson" in a tongue-in-cheek commercial that poked fun at the differences between being a model and an athlete. In the ad, directed by David Fincher, she offers modeling tips while striking poses on a bed. Each tip is contrasted with sweaty, grueling athletic footage. "The Nike girl is me, just a bit extreme" says Gabby, who strongly believes that being athletic is not unfeminine. She is also Nike's first ever female athlete to help design a shoe: the Air Trainer set was launched in 1994, the Air Patrol in 1995, and the Air GR will be launched in the Fall of 1997.

Amazon.com Review
An odd hybrid of a book, Big Girl in the Middle is part model/volleyball player Gabrielle Reece's autobiography and part third-person chronicle of the misadventures of Team Nike across the 1996 professional beach volleyball circuit, for which Reece captained and played middle blocker. At 6'3" and 170 pounds, Reece cuts an imposing figure, as commanding on a magazine or book cover as she is on the court. She has a unique perspective on both of the public arenas in which she's played: as a top-flight athlete and accepted beauty, she smashes several stereotypes; how she's coped with those stereotypes, successfully spiking most of them, makes Reece an admirable role model. Her observations in this area serve up Big Girl's best attributes.

From Library Journal
The newly established Olympic sport of beach volleyball has an image problem. Although every bit as fierce a game as its indoor version, it is still associated with suntanning and bikini culture. In alternating chapters, athlete, model, and 6'3" "babe for a living" Reece and coauthor Karbo (Trespassers Welcome Here, Putnam, 1989) discuss the balance Reece seeks between aggression and emotion, beauty and brains, masculinity and femininity. Shuffled about as a child, she developed a strong, brash, independent personality ideally suited for the self-promotion needed for both modeling and pitching for a developing sport. Only 26, she finds her greatest rewards in the challenges of volleyball. Her story is an inspiration to tall girls and young female athletes, who may fear looking, sounding, and acting big and strong. Recommended for public libraries. (Photos not seen..

Inspirational for Girls that dont fit in, I guess
By seigrist@istethmar.com.hk
This book I think could definitely serve as inspiration for tall, athletic girls. I bought the book for the girl I'm dating, thinking it might give her some more confidence (she's tall and pretty as well, and is confident in some things). I just ended up reading the book before giving to her, and although the way it is presented is a little in-your-face, I think it could serve as inspiration for women who want to have some confidence in themselves, especially those that came from broken or dysfunctional families.

One great thing about the book is it is full of one-liner philosophy that really hits the mark. These one liners are great because they make you laugh, but at the same time make you think. Quite brilliant in this respect.

It's also sort of interesting, and a fast read, although the writing style is very "glam" in a way... sometimes it seemed as if I was just reading a really long Vogue article about Gabby Reece! Also at times, I felt Karen Karbo tended to fawn a bit too much over Gabby. I actually preferred the sections that Gabby Reece wrote... they were more personal and down to earth.

Oh... and if Gabby Reece reads this review... send me an email! Will you autograph my book?? Just kidding... decent book!

Big girl
By Nathan Hall
How would you feel if you were torn between two careers; modeling, and volleyball? That's what Gabrielle Reece encountered in her journey through life. This book, written by Gabrielle herself, was to tell the story of an extremely tall girl growing up mocked and taunted. I believe that this book is important for all vertically enhanced women.

"Big Girl in the Middle" is basically about a girl named Gabrielle that grows up not knowing she is any different than anyone else, and is hit in the face with the fact of her abnormal height at the age of fourteen when she realized she was 5' 11". She does a few modeling contracts but likes playing volleyball for a living a little more enjoyable. She is on Team Nike and throughout her careers does horrible, many times not even winning one game out of tournament. This book is non-relational for many people of average height, and can be difficult to understand the stress she endured her entire life.

I thought the book had its good moments but overall lacked the excitement that I feel it needed. I did like the moments in which the volleyball game was actually occurring and thought it was very descriptive and easy to visualize. The majority of the book was about her everyday life on the off seasons and her booming modeling career that she didn't want to pursue. If I could change this book I would change the random descriptions of her everyday life style. Overall, this book was a little boring and it annoyed me that she didn't take up modeling.

Big Girl - Little Book
By Sara Huffman
I thought Big Girl in the Middle would be a wonderful book to read. It's about a girl who is a professional volleyball player, and I really love volleyball. But when I began to read it, "Boy was I wrong!" I hate books that try to make you feel sorry for people and it seemed like that's all this book was doing. It was quite depressing, and I dreaded the thought of having to pick it up again each day to read another chapter. I like to read about some obstacles people have to overcome to achieve their goals, but this was a little extreme. It seems as though nothing good ever happened to Gabrielle Reece in her life, and when something finally did, it was taken away from her. Life is not easy (we all know that), so why make it worse for other people by writing about it?
I also thought the book was difficult to follow. One minute they'd be taken talking about her childhood and the next thing you know they were in the middle of one of her games. She didn't always give her ages; she would just say that she did things after this and this. I also never really knew when or where they were talking. For example, I never knew if the conversations happened at her home, on the phone, on at the beach. It was just really tough to follow.
The only good thing about the book is Gabrielle Reece. She is what every girl, at some point in her life, wants to be! She's been a model as well as a professional athlete. Most girls want to be idolized for their looks and /or praised for their athletic ability. Gabrielle Reece is both. She is a role model for many women around the globe.
I would not recommend this book for those who are looking for a laugh, or an exciting or interesting story. I don't think it's a really good book at all. There was absolutely no humor in it. It was depressing and hard to follow. I wouldn't want to read it again!

The popularity of Yunus Emre, who is often referred to as the Turkish national poet, has endured for six centuries. Yunus is the most important representative of early Turkish mysticism; he can be considered the founder of Alevi-Bektasi literature, and his influence on later tekke poetry was enormous. His ilahis (hymns) have played an important role in sufi ceremonies. Grace Martin Smith's translation of Yunus's poetry will acquaint the non-Turkish reader with the art and thinking of one of Turkey's most significant poets and will be helpful to students of both modern and Ottoman Turkish and to all those interested in Islamic poetry and piety.

One constant theme in Yunus' poetry is Love, that of God for man and, therefore, of man for God. Yunus' love is the most powerful of everything, it is for the creator of the universe but it is also the creator, it is fierce and burning, consuming Yunus' mere existence. Yunus is like Mecnun, "the mad man of Love" who suffered , appear to have gone mad, and died just for the love of Leyla. Yunus wants to be as drunk, i.e. mad, as Mecnun, for his Love which wounds him terribly. For Yunus external forms of religion are not important and reward and punishment are not of concern; he only cares for God, yearns of his Love. The world is temporary and even when he dies, even when he is killed like the martyr of love Hallaj (Yunus refers to him in various other pieces of poetry), whatever is left of him will be yearning for God. Yunus can argue with God that His Love is killing people, making them suffer enormously, he seems to complain of his unjust treatment, but regardless, his love is so great that he can not help yearning for Him. He believes that he existed with God before there was existence.

Northwest California: A Natural History, by John O. Sawyer

Northwestern California is mainly known for its majestic redwood forests and incomparable coastline, but there is much more in its rich biota and scenery. The forests are part of the most diverse temperate coniferous forest in the world. Rugged mountains, numerous lakes, wilderness areas, and wild rivers attract outdoor enthusiasts and geologists came here to refine the theory of plate tectonics. Distilling a vast amount of knowledge, this book is the starting point for anyone who wants to explore the biological and geographical richness of northwestern California. John O. Sawyer describes the famous forests and varied landscapes from a geographic perspective. He explains its long geological history and the changing roles of fire and land use. The result of a lifetime of work, his rich narrative illustrates how the region, in many ways the least modified portion of the state, is a place where plants and animals have been shielded from extinction. Sawyer documents the restoration of dunes and forests, the control of nonnative plant invasions, and innovative approaches to restoring rivers so they can support thriving fisheries.

From the Inside Flap
"No one is more familiar with the natural history of the poorly known northwest corner of California than John Sawyer. It is a treat to go along with him as he expertly describes the fascinating physical and biological forces that shape the incredibly diverse landscapes of this region. Details on how humans have modified these lands in the past, as well as the present, and how we can preserve the many unusual ecosystems found there, bring added depth to this remarkable volume."—Harold Mooney, Stanford University

“While Northwest California is one of the most biologically diverse regions of the state, it is also one of the least known. One person, however, knows that region well—very well, in fact—and that is John Sawyer, a botanist who has been studying the area for over 40 years. We should all be grateful that he shares a good deal of his knowledge in this engaging, informative, and comprehensive natural history."—Lester Rowntree, University of California Berkeley

An Academic Approach
By Dorothea Casaubon
I bought this book thinking it might be a field guide. It is packed with intriguing information, but is not intended as a guide for the general public. Academic in nature, it assumes comfort with undergraduate level technical information. And, it's a bit difficult to use in the field. For instance, there's a nice list of fen plants on page 60, but no mention of fens in the index, despite a paragraph defining the difference between a bog and a fen on page 26. Lists of plants and animals are provided, but are difficult to find when you want them, since they aren't all included in the index. Some latin names are indexed, some not.

Flora, fauna and minerals are not described, only listed. You'll need other field guides to ID them. Some information would have been better presented as maps and charts, rather than text, such as the geographic zone definitions.

The only part of the book I used while actually hiking were the lists. Here, the use of common names, with latin names following in parenthesis was frustrating. It results in species of one genus being separated, rather than together, on a list because they have been alphabetized by the first word of their common name. On the other hand, it is nice to have flora and fauna listed by habitat and location.

Being a somewhat nerdy amateur, I did enjoy the history of human impacts in the area, paleobotany, research findings on many topics, and conservation content. This is a serious book by an authority with many years of research to his credit, aimed at serious students. Read it at home, before you go, and in the motel or campground while you visit this beautiful and rich area, or buy more general field guides if you just want to learn names of a few plants and animals when you visit the area.

At Home in the Vineyard: Cultivating a Winery, an Industry, and a Life, by Susan Sokol Blosser

This moving, evocative memoir, woven with lyrical descriptions of the sights and smells of vineyard life, tells the inspirational story of one woman's journey to success in an industry run mostly by men. At Home in the Vineyard, filled with colorful characters and unexpected experiences, brings a local rural community vividly alive as Oregon wine pioneer and industry icon Susan Sokol Blosser recounts how she fell in love with a vineyard, learned how to run it, and ultimately achieved her vision of producing Pinot Noirs to rival those of Burgundy. An intimate family story, At Home in the Vineyard also gives a candid insider's view of Oregon's flourishing wine industry.

Sokol Blosser begins her narrative in the 1970s, when, as a young, idealistic wife, she helped her husband make his wild idea of planting a vineyard in the Dundee Hills become a reality. By the book’s final pages, she has become president of Sokol Blosser Winery, widely respected for gaining national visibility and for producing world-class wines, especially the elusive Pinot Noir. Along the way, Sokol Blosser tells how she learned to do everything from driving a tractor and managing a picking crew to selling Oregon wine in Manhattan. She also shares some special accomplishments: how she instituted values of environmental sustainability and social responsibility at the vineyard, integrated family and business life, and successfully brought the second generation on board.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1970, the Blossers were in their mid-20s, having spent most of their four married years in graduate school or on memorable road trips in their Volkswagon camper. Then, as she puts it, "Bill and I each gave birth." She produced their first child, while he bought their first lot of vineyard land—in Oregon. As Blosser explains, in 1970 American wine was supposed to be made in California, if at all. But they were guessing that pinot noir, in particular, might work well in a colder, damper climate if the soil were right and the growing calendar adjusted to work with the weather. The Blossers, together with other Oregon pioneers, built up a well-regarded wine industry, which in recent years has become one of the state's more environmentally progressive industries as well. Blosser tells the story of how they learned both viniculture and small business management. True, their marriage ended after 33 years, but she's not one to dwell on the negative in this upbeat narrative. While Blosser's story might be interesting for a vintner hopeful, general readers may find it flat. Blosser might make great wines, but her writing could use a little more flavor. (Aug.)

From the Inside Flap
"Just like the complex Pinot Noir crafted by Sokol Blosser, Susan's life story is layered and rich. Recounting her journey with passion and humor, we share in the professional challenges Susan faced as an Oregon wine industry pioneer, as well as the personal rewards of raising a family and finding self-fulfillment. Even if you're not a wine lover, you will love reading this touching memoir."—Leslie Sbrocco, author of Wine for Women: A Guide to Buying, Pairing, and Sharing Wine

"At last, an intelligent, literate, first-hand observation of the beginnings of the Oregon wine industry. Susan Sokol Blosser was there when we were no more than a handful of families with naïve dreams and very dirty boots. Not only does At Home in the Vineyard capture those early experiences with exuberant detail and humor, but it also provides insight into her family's private challenges of managing vineyards and a successful winery."—David Adelsheim, President, Adelsheim Vineyard

"This is a coming-of-age story of a wine region and of a woman. It is about finding and following your destiny, but also shaping it yourself. It is about using every success and setback to fuel your own energy, to do the right thing, and to feed your heart. How could this book be both deeply inspiring and funny? Well, that is Susan Sokol Blosser."—Andrea (Immer) Robinson, Master Sommelier and author, Andrea's Complete Wine Course for Everyone

Minor Classic
By Lazuli
This is a brilliant book written by a highly intelligent and unusual woman. It is probably headed towards becoming a minor classic. Like all great books it is not easy to classify. At its most superficial it purports to be a history of the Oregon wine industry, a subject of limited interest. At another level it is a business autobiography by a woman who heads a successful Oregon winery, a subject of slightly wider appeal. Yet both levels simply form a frame to answer more eternal questions: who am I and how did I get to be who I am? At that deeper level the book may come to have a more lasting life.

Emerging into adulthood in the early 1970's the author and her husband bought land in Oregon and planted grape vines which ultimately led to the Sokol-Blosser Winery. That they were in their early twenties with no business experience, no knowledge of the wine industry, and no knowledge of agricultural did not then occur to them as an insurmountable obstacle. Nearly forty years later after taking over the business from her husband, surviving the disinvestment of her brothers, droughts, rain storms, a volcanic eruption, separation from business partners, 20% interest rates, three children, a three-legged cat, recalcitrant geese, a mid-life divorce, love unexpectedly found anew, success in business and failure in politics, the author recounts with great honesty the trials and tribulations of a woman's life in the second half of the 20th century as mother, wife, and CEO.

While the author ascribes the emerging success of her business mainly to determination and some luck, her intelligence and judgment shine through and provide a more convincing explanation. That no rancor invades the author's tale, despite many instances where bitterness and acrimony would be a natural response, suggests that her skill and judgment in negotiating difficult situations may have counted more heavily than simple determination. The author's seriousness is often leavened with humor. It is a book well worth reading.

Sour grapes? No way!
By K. M.
Well, except when the weather deals them an unwelcome clout....

I live smack dab in the middle of wine country (California) myself, but am no vintner. And it happens I took a scouting trip to the McMinnville vicinity in Oregon last year, thinking it a prospective new home. So, when I spied the lush, green-vined cover of AT HOME IN THE VINEYARD, I was hooked and had to investigate one woman's (and her family's) experiences establishing and nurturing grapes from plant to bottle.

Susan Sokol Blosser writes a chatty, wide-ranging history beginning in late 1970, when she gave birth to her first son and her then-husband Bill "closed the deal on our first piece of vineyard land." She traces the stages of the vineyard and the winery that was built later with an easy, honest style that disarms and charms. It is soon apparent that this woman is an engine of energy. During the years her three children are small, she mainly toils in the vineyard, tilling, planting, picking, spraying, fertilizing, etc. But she also finds time to join the school board and various associations. She also teaches briefly at a McMinnville college. Later, she is twice a candidate for state public office, once losing by a questionable "whisker." As the family wine business expands, so does the wine industry in Oregon. Susan and Bill do their part to uphold and promote the burgeoning reputation Oregon wine slowly acquires -- particularly its Pinot Noir which grows full-bodied in the cooler Northwest climate. In 1990, Susan takes over from Bill as president of their winery and slowly refinances and then gains full ownership of the enterprise. She changes winemakers to improve quality. She travels widely and often to see distributors and explore new markets. She modernizes the labels on their bottles and gains national attention with a blended white wine. She deals with lawsuits and legislative hurdles. She also decides to shift to organic operations and embraces sustainable agriculture. Then, in the early years of the new millennium, she decides she will focus on gradually handing over the reins of power to the son and daughter who have decided to follow their parents into the family business.

While the author relates the chronology of the vineyard and winery she owns and manages, she doesn't ignore the personal side. AT HOME IN THE VINEYARD includes some cute anecdotes about farm pets, and it mentions family concerns such as her father's Alzheimer's without dwelling on them. At one point, I wondered how in the world anyone could juggle so many balls in the air -- family, business, many friendships, and political activism. Something seemed bound to tumble. Well, something did, and the author unflinchingly, and without wallowing, tackles the changes in her life after the children grew up and left the nest.

For anyone who has ever considered starting up a winery, AT HOME IN THE VINEYARD illustrates the kind of commitment and fortitude such an undertaking requires. But even if you aren't planning on being the entrepreneur that all the members of the Sokol Blosser family are; if you seek stories about rural life, want to know more about the Willamette Valley, or are interested in one outspoken and undaunted woman's adventures as a corporate executive, then snag a copy of AT HOME IN THE VINEYARD and -- maybe with a glass of wine in hand -- imbibe it cover to cover.

A surprising memoir for our times
By Sue Cleary
Susan Sokol Blosser's narrative of her experiences surprised me by its appeal. It is beautifully written -- lyrical and honest -- and draws the reader into the personalities of the people, their fortunes and misfortunes. That is what we could expect of any good memoir. What surprised me was how engaging the author's description of the business of creating vineyards and a winery and marketing their products, along with the struggle to do so with environmentally sound practices. This is a person who has lived her principles and created a richly rewarding life.
