Hans Peeters, Professor of Biology, Zoology, and Ecology emeritus at Chabot College, is coauthor, with Pam Peeters, of Raptors of California (UC Press), with E.W. Jameson, Jr., of Mammals of California (UC Press) and author of American Hawking. His illustrations have appeared in many bird guides including The American Bird Conservancy's All the Birds of North America, Book of North American Birds, and Birds of South Asia. An award-winning painter, two of his depictions of Golden Eagles have appeared on Mexican stamps.

wonderful pocket guide to western north american owls

The size of a Peterson series field guide but perhaps a bit thicker. Covers everything one might want to know about the owls of our West. Detailed and very readable descriptions of their biology, habits, how to find them and their interaction with humans. Next is an excellent species account with wonderful color illustations and photos of owls in action and as field guide representatives. Comprehensive, incisive and beautifully put together -- a real buy!

Another superb book from Hans Peeters!

Far more than a Field Guide to the Owls of California and the West, this wonderful book is a primer in ornithology, a work of strong scholarship, a guide to conservation, and an entertainment. Mr. Peeters is a distinguished raptor biologist, a bird painter and illustrator, a naturalist of extraordinary experience. Beyond providing astute identification information, this book gives the reader fascinating detail on the lives of owls, the ecology of birds in general and raptors in particular, and does these things with a grace of language unknown in other field guides.

Peeters has done it all -text, photographs, drawings, and illustrations. The plates are among his very best. The photograph of a Northern Pygmy Owl that introduces the scction describing an owl's body is extraordinary, and there are many more of similar beauty and utility. The book is presented in six parts. The Introduction is followed by An Owl's Life, Finding and Watching Owls, Owls and Humans, Species Accounts, and 21 stunning color plates (including two very useful ones of fledgling owls).

The book does indeed go beyond the boundaries of California. In fact, all 19 species of owls fond in the United States are covered. As the author says, "...the new scope provided the opportuniry to write about species that don't occur in my home state but that I have had the pleasure of meeting elsewhere."

Mr. Peeters (who is much published in professional circles)has done a thorough survey of the scientific literature, and what he has found and shares with his readers is interesting in every way. Details of distribution, food habits, behavior, ecology and status are provided. And all of this is supplemented with the more than half century of perceptive global natural history observations that have been so much of the life of this biologist. The book is full of material dazzling to amateur and professional alike.

This is a field guide that can be read for pleasure, written as it is with color and verbal richness laced with the idiosyncratic humor of this author.

This book would make a fine gift for birders young and old (perhaps especially if coupled with his recent Raptors of California, co-authored by his wife, Pam Peeters). But the same is true for the professional ornithologist -who is bound to learn how little he or she knew about owls before reading this book!

A wonderful book for the owl enthusiast!

This book does not claim to be a scientific manual about owls. And just because it's published by a University Press doesn't mean it has to be a text book. It is a field guide. Field guides are not required to be written by biologists. The person who wrote the review called "Where's the beef?" is also NOT a biologist and is also quite fond of relating natural history information about raptors based solely on personal experience and antecdotes. So let's just put all that aside, shall we? If you love owls, if you want to know more about them, and their habitats, and their personal lives, and how to look for them, and how to observe them, then this is a wonderful book. If you want a lot of scientific details and facts - most of which will be based on what I would consider to be unethical experimentation on captive owls - then it's best to buy a biology book about owls that is written by a Ph.D. Otherwise, you will enjoy the accessible writing style of this book, the humor, and the photographs and drawings. You will learn more about owls, fascinating creatures that they are!

In September 1879, James McNeill Whistler boarded the Venice-bound night train in Paris. He was forty-five years old and bankrupt. What was to be a three-month stay in the Italian city—long enough to complete a set of twelve etchings—stretched to fourteen months. When Whistler returned to London, he brought back over fifty magnificent etchings and a hundred pastels, far in excess of the original commission. In Palaces in the Night, Margaret F. MacDonald looks at this key period in Whistler's career, examining his unique vision of Venice and his development of the medium of etching. She shows how he reestablished himself in the art world of London and Paris, turning disaster and disgrace into profit and prestige. Lavishly illustrated with some of the most beautiful and intriguing images Whistler ever produced, this book provides a fascinating account of a pivotal period in the artist's long and complicated career.

Whistler's aim was to restore both his fortune and reputation with the Venetian etchings. To that end he included views of familiar sights like the Riva degli Schiavoni and San Marco, but he also captured quiet backwaters, secret gardens, and lantern-lit windows that did not appear in any guidebook. His selection of views and compositions, plus the expressiveness of his line and printing, differentiated his work from that of others, and MacDonald shows the process by which Whistler selected, shaped, and edited his Venetian corpus. He drew figures in distinctively Italian costume, each an individual, moving, gesturing, and interacting with other real people.

An appendix of Whistler's letters from Venice provides an entertaining account of his time there and also deepens the reader's understanding of how the city challenged and inspired him.

A number of books have been written recently on Whistler's etchings and pastels, but this is the first to examine these works exclusively from the periods when the artist worked in Venice. MacDonald, a University of Glasgow research fellow and the curator who wrote the catalogue raisonn? of the British artist's drawings, pastels, and watercolors, here examines the works that Whistler created in Venice, commissioned by the Fine Arts Society of London. The methods he used to achieve the formal effects of the pastels and etchings of this period are examined, as is the critical response to their exhibition in London in 1880 and 1883. MacDonald also discusses Whistler's unique approach to Venetian subjects of the time: he depicted the quotidian life of the city instead of just tourist views. Although this is a lovely, well-researched book, it has a very specific focus, recommending it only for academic or museum libraries supporting arts programs. The Good Book on Whistler

I'm probably going to rate this book 5 Stars. I just bought my forth copy of it from this Amazon site. One I kept, two I gave to art gallery owners and the most recent one I shipped to an artist/professional photographer friend who works on an etching project with me.

JM Whistler may not have been a very likeable guy in his day (except it appears to his students/protégés, some of whom seem to have adored him) but this book shows the art talent of the man !

According to the author Whistler was at times a work-alcoholic, at times not well focused and never able to handle money. From contemporary reports he had a high opinion of himself and his work and was pretty contentious and didn't suffer critics in the least.

I very much agree with David Adams above, the pastels are a joy to view. The talent is evident. Whistler cared not at all that art critics didn't accept pastel as an investment/museum grade art medium at the time. If the author, MF MacDonald is to be believed, Whistler came at those critics with both "barrels loaded" ; and I very much believe MacDonald, she supports her claims very well with contemporarys' writings and newspaper excerpts.

It's the etchings that I was after. Whistler gives them in spades. He furthered the art in his methods, materials and his choices of previously unacceptable subject matter in that exotic city of Venice. The images he brought back to London for sale were not expected but seem to have been accepted by the buying public when displayed in the way that Whistler's marketing savvy told him to show them.

Something else that MacDonald gives us in this book that I've never seen before is comparative photographs, many. Fairly current pictures of scenes that Whistler etched or captured in pastel taken from as near as possible the same perspective as he saw them. She also shows some similar images by other artists of the same scene which Whistler portrayed and explains similarities and differences between them. Bravo to her!

I'll admit I'm biased. I'm using this book to learn artistic methods from a man I might not have liked much as a person had we lived at the same time but an extremely talented and very hard working artist nonetheless. Full of himself ......and probably for good reason. Great book !

Etchings & Pastels to change your view of Whistler

This is an amazingly fine book of Whistler's etchings & pastels for a very reasonable price now that it has been remaindered. To me, the absolute economy of means in his pastels is stunning. Every pastel artist should pick up this book. Just looking carefully at these little masterpieces is worth more than a whole course in pastel drawing.

a good backbone for any course in environmental history

Last summer; I held a seminar on environmental history. The major task in preparing the seminar was to collect articles for the reading assignments, as I wanted a collection of articles dealing with various environmental subjects covering different parts of the world. This book provides exactly this, and could have saved me a lot of effort. Complemented with some classics, this book would provide a good backbone for any course in environmental history. As interesting as the content is, the grandiloquence is baffling. As a student, breaking through the dense diction this book ravages one's mind with is phenomenally exhausting. The experience feels almost perversely difficult, with unnecessarily large verbiage within analyses that veer far too off topic in an attempt to comment on the field of anthropology itself. If you are interested in reading strictly about the practices of the Samburu tribe, I suggest you take your business elsewhere.

A magnificent book, worthy of its subject

Somehow over the last 100 years the American public has come to believe that the oak tree is THE all American tree, THE symbol of strength and longevity. Well, this book reminds us of what the American public has forgotten, that the oak tree once had a big brother, a tree that grew faster, grew taller, and lived longer. A tree that produced a wood as rot resistant as redwood, and every fall gave us very tasty and highly nutritious nuts. It was indeed as close to a perfect tree as you can imagine.

This is a great book not only because it tells the tale of the American chestnut and its near demise so well, but also because it goes into great detail about the current restoration efforts and the often hidden "political" battles inside the major organization fighting to restore the chestnut, the American Chestnut Foundation.

Sweet as a Nut

As a biologist with an intense avocational interest in the American Chestnut, I planted nearly a hundred seeds on my property in PA way back in 1972. After 8 years of beautiful growth, the blight hit them. I joined the American Chestnut Foundation and discovered a hypovirulent chestnut on my property that I shared with professionals studying the blight fungus. But my interest in chestnuts waned, in part because of the ACF's backcrossing program, until I read Susan Freinkel's marvelous book! The people I knew only as names became personalities--Burnham, Rutter, Hebard--and she introduced me to others, such as Gary and Lucille Griffen, whose work she described finally explained to me why the hypovirulent inoculants I applied to my chestnuts back in 1980 didn't help at all. It's the combination of genetic resistance with hypovirulence that is needed. What an eye opener and what a fantastic book she has written, one that has rekindled my youthful interest in restoring the role of the American Chestnut. Her book supports the huge role natural history plays in producing good science. Passion for a species is a natural element in knowing it.

This book made me want to plant chestnut trees on every square inch of land I own, and then go buy more land to plant even more.

American Chestnut by Susan Freinkel reads like a murder mystery novel that has merged with the six million dollar man tv show. Only this story about the chestnut tree is true and we aren't ever sure whether 'We can rebuild him.' We still aren't sure if 'We have the technology.'

I enjoyed the book. I couldn't put it down in fact. But I confess to having a love affair with both trees and all things Appalachian. I do really wish the book had contained more than one photo and one diagram. I found myself constantly web surfing to find places, and photos of trees, discussed within the book.

Also, I purchased the book in 2016 but the facts of the book seem to go no further than 2006. For a book that so despairingly confronts the reader with the limitations that time brings to the save-the-chestnut quest, I wish for at least a small epilogue explaining any breakthroughs that have come along since the book was first printed in 2009.

If you love trees, I recommend you buy the book.

Polish Jew recounts his attempts to build a life in the "free" world as a Soviet Gulag survivor.

In Surviving Freedom, Bardach describes what it was like to try to make a life for himself after his (early) release (in 1945) from a forced labor camp in Siberia. He heads to Moscow to meet up with his Polish Army officer brother (who was instrumental in obtaining his early release) and finally learns the fate of his family, who chose to stay in their home and suffered for their decision. He decides he must return to Poland, a difficult task because of the political situation, where he reunites with old friends and visits his family's former residences. Back in Moscow, with encouragement from his brother, he gets in to medical school, becomes involved with a Russian woman (made difficult by laws against such relationships) becomes a doctor, and moves to Iowa where he eventually becomes Professor Emeritus at the University of Iowa.

What struck me most about the book was Bardach's brazen behavior. I expected his demeanor towards Russians to be sort of subservient and cautious after the Camps to avoid another sentence and possible return. Not so. Having learned the way to deal with the true criminals (murderers, thieves) of his former forced labor life, he repeatedly uses this knowledge to his advantage afterwards, though shows the necessary restraint when most warranted. I confess I worried through most of the book that he'd make an irreversible error (in speech or action) that would land him back in camp - ack! Surviving Freedom, unfortunately not published after the author died (at age 83), is an engaging story about one man's post Gulag path. Also good: Man is Wolf to Man by Janusz Bardach, The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman, and The Forsaken: An American Tragedy in Russia by Tim Tzouliadis.

After the Gulag, Life Under Communism

Janusz Bardach was barely out of his teens when he was sentenced to Stalin's gulag. Although Dr. Bardach's first book, "Man is Wolf to Man," describing his life in the gulag, is an extraordinary read, in many ways I think "Surviving Freedom," describing the years after he was released from prison and living under Communism, is a much more important book. This book is about Janusz Bardach's life upon his release from prison and his life up to and including going to medical school in Russia as a Jewish Polish student.

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to live under Communism, you have only to open the pages of this book to read about a life of anti-semitism, terror, fear and uncertainty, mistrust, disappointment, betrayal, etc., in Communist Russia and Poland. The authors transported me to another world, one where you had to watch every word that came from your lips, where a simple joke could land you in jail, where neighbors and even family and friends could not be trusted.

From pg. 187-188: "I first noticed a change in public behavior toward Jews in the buses and metro stations and in the lines in food stores. Before the war, anti-Semitic slurs had been a crime, but by 1948-1949, Jews were being openly insulted. The few people who expressed indignation and condemned the vulgar remarks were called "Jew-lovers" and were ridiculed, even physically attacked. One day I was standing in line at a bakery waiting for fresh bread to be unloaded from a truck. The manager of the store, a middle-aged Jewish woman, came out from the back of the store and announced that the sale would start in five or ten minutes. As she returned to the back room, two Russian women rushed to the counter and shouted, "You Jewish whore! Open the door so we can see how much you steal!" An elderly man in an army uniform joined in, shouting, "Don't let those bloodsuckers steal and cheat. It's time to be done with them." Finally a young army officer stepped in and told everyone to shut up. "I don't know her or you," he said, addressing the trio at the counter. "But I don't like what I see or hear. we're not Nazis.

"In the following months newspapers became more virulently anti-Semitic, accusing Jews of nationalism and connections with western imperialism. More famous writers and intellectuals were arrested, ...."

pg 248: "Life in Poland was not easy. The communist regime there established the same authoritarian rule as the one in the Soviet Union. As a newcomer, a professor from Moscow, and a Jew, I provoked strong reactions in people--open hostility in some and blind subservience in others. ....."

"The culmination of years of rabid anti-Semitism came in March 1968. It was inspired by a group of Polish nationalists led by General Mieczyslaw Moczar. I was targeted by many of my colleagues. I thought I could weather the tide, but as my Jewish friends and colleagues left Poland, I, too, began to feel the need to seek refuge for my family and myself in another country."

Written by Janusz Bardach (now deceased) and Kathleen Gleeson, the book is extremely well written. What a gift to leave for humanity!
