First time of many book purchases not happy

Book arrived with a small tear in the back cover and a strange smear on the front, which did wipe off completely with a damp rag. Also strangely every page with a photo was washed out, even the text?

A concise and comprehensive history of America's love-hate relationship with alcohol

Although Thomas Jefferson and others envisioned a United States of America with a thriving wine culture, the temperance and prohibitionist movements pushed the country in a very different direction. Mendelson traces the early development of viticulture in America, to the rising tide of Prohibitionism, culminating in the failed experiment of the Eighteenth Amendment, to repeal and the jumbled mess of state and federal regulation that followed, to the roaring growth of the wine industry since the 1970s. There is interesting discussion of the battle to define American Viticultural Areas and of recent case law that addresses interstate sale of wine. He concludes that there is still a long way to go before an "authentic wine culture" can take root in America -- with a rational system for the regulation of wine production and sales to go along with it.

It's a great read and includes an excellent bibliography for those who want to dig deeper.

unusual glimpses into authentic country gentility

The photos in this beautiful book are not what you usually see in a decorating book. No decorator came in and "styled" these rooms before the shoot. They look lived in, over hundreds of years.

These houses are not attainable or copy-able by most of us. These are homes with generations of history behind them. But the glimpse into "real" country manors is unique and precious. The few American homes featured are boring run-of-the-mill. The European homes are fabulous.

Forty-three beautiful summer-type homes appear in large glossy colored format covering more than 250 large size pages that make the book weigh as much as a heavy fire-log ready to sink a coffee table.
Author Alexandra D'Arnoux and award winning photographer Gilles De Chabaneix visit several continents to pick out outstanding dream homes, that although luxurious, with stables, gardens and formal dining rooms, nevertheless look lived- in; loads of lucky children treck through casual libraries, relax, take walks, celebrate birthdays, and play chopsticks on an old piano.
Emphasis here is on family values and most of the places are furnished to create a nostalgic atmosphere. It is like 'Conrad in Search of His Youth.'
This is a wonderful book to have and hug. Whenever a guest opens it up and peers at a picture, there follows a deep longing sigh.

Excellent, but Dry

In this book, Schurmann does an excellent job of explaining Chinese Communist ideology, as well as elucidating just how China was organized. Unfortunately, Schurmann's work is no longer a piece of analytical reporting, but a piece of history (since the work is over 30 years old). The only serious flaw in this well-researched, scholarly work is how slow the book reads. Schurmann often spends 20 pages explaining a single 'contradiction'' (that is, a thesis and an antithesis of Maoist dialectic). But... he does so very well.

Excellent on Erasmus and "Erastian Erasmian" Sense

This book broaches some issues of Erasmus' ideas on biblical interpretation that get short shrift normally. His emphasis on trying to grasp the original context and audience for the meaning of utterances (especially those of Jesus) somehow STILL seems very radical and typically gets lefts out. Or conveniently brushed under the carpet. Also I love that the discussion indicates and even mentions with a bit of dry humor, the "Erastian Erasmian" sense, which has been so slippery for scholars, and so likely to be ignored by many less sensitive scholars of ideas and letters. This has surely contributed to the short shrift the Erastian Erasmian sense has gotten in Western history, to our great detriment.

This book is full of info on royal lineages and blood lines and fairly well details through genealogy the spread of paganism and transition to xstianity . However it was ponderous and redolent of fat old men sitting around at university smoking cigars and drinking brandy and totally disregarding any accounts of common people or archaeological records

The California Deserts

Bruce Pavlik has written and produced an extremely useful, informative, well written and well done book with "The California Deserts: An Ecological Rediscovery". Anyone who treasures these wonderful deserts with treks in to them will love this book; it is obviously written by a scholar and a man who grew up in and loves the California deserts.

Comprehensive, Current & Useful

This is the type of book we have all been waiting for - holistic, comprehensive, current and easy to follow. It is not for those who substitute oil for knowledge riding their ATVs, but rather those who walk the land and want to get to know the desert first-hand. What are the climate, soils, hydrology, metabolism, light, perturbations and cycles that make up the Mojave & adjacent deserts within California? Find it here. Deserts are areas where evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation by a factor of 6 to 10. It's not what you get (precipitation), but what you keep (effective moisture), that counts. Moisture is a dominant factor, but so many other things control what deserts are and how we see them.

This is about seeing - what are the different types of metabolism plants and animals use to deal with extreme aridity and heat? This provides answers with easy to understand illustrations. What is desert pavement and how does it form? Find solutions and processes here. What are the ecotones (boundaries) between humid & arid ecosystems and how are they defined? This is a dynamic process book, not a "look-it-up-and-forget-it book".

When I stand on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and look eastward into the Great Basin this book gives me a sense of understanding of colors, cryptograms, herbs, shrubs & trees. Soil fungi are important nutrient cyclers in desert soils. Ride an ATV over "barren" sand and you wipe out soils and plants for many years to come. What do soil fungi look like? Find it here. Soil fungi bacteria relationships are important in all soils and especially in desert soils.

What is the role and niche of desert fish? How long have they been around (a long time). How do dunes form and what is the source of the sand that makes up dunes? How often does it snow in the desert? How do human communities affect desert ecosystems and are these activities sustainable? Human communities may flourish for a short time by spending the natural capital stored over the last 10,000 years, but they cannot be sustained.

This book comes through with colors, viewsheds, airsheds, plants, animals and outside influences. It gives you insight into fire, flood, wind, heat, cold and travel. This is a valuable addition to my desert bookshelf. I will look at all deserts (Atacama, Karakum, Antarctic, Patagonia, Sonora, Mojave, Chihuaua, Talkla Makan, as well as the Sahara in a new light.

This book explores the role of native place associations in the development of modern Chinese urban society and the role of native-place identity in the development of urban nationalism. From the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, sojourners from other provinces dominated the population of Shanghai and other expanding commercial Chinese cities. These immigrants formed native place associations beginning in the imperial period and persisting into the mid-twentieth century. Goodman examines the modernization of these associations and argues that under weak urban government, native place sentiment and organization flourished and had a profound effect on city life, social order and urban and national identity.
