The Lost Land of Lemuria: Fabulous Geographies, Catastrophic Histories, by Sumathi Ramaswamy

During the nineteenth century, Lemuria was imagined as a land that once bridged India and Africa but disappeared into the ocean millennia ago, much like Atlantis. A sustained meditation on a lost place from a lost time, this elegantly written book is the first to explore Lemuria’s incarnations across cultures, from Victorian-era science to Euro-American occultism to colonial and postcolonial India. The Lost Land of Lemuria widens into a provocative exploration of the poetics and politics of loss to consider how this sentiment manifests itself in a fascination with vanished homelands, hidden civilizations, and forgotten peoples. More than a consideration of nostalgia, it shows how ideas once entertained but later discarded in the metropole can travel to the periphery—and can be appropriated by those seeking to construct a meaningful world within the disenchantment of modernity. Sumathi Ramaswamy ultimately reveals how loss itself has become a condition of modernity, compelling us to rethink the politics of imagination and creativity in our day.

An absorbing account of Tamil society, origins and aspirations ...
By William Courson
Sumathi Ramaswamy, an associate professor of history at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor has written a captivating account of what in the West has come to be known as Lemuria, or Mu, a lost continent in the Southern hemisphere variously placed in either the Pacific or Indian oceans. First postulated in the mid-nineteenth century by geographers, biologists and evolutionary theorists as an explanatory mechanism for the similarity of flora and fauna found in Southeastern Africa, Madagascar and the Indian subcontinent, Lemuria captured the attention and imagination of occultists like Helena Petrovna Blavatsky - who saw the sunken land mass as the primordial home of a divinely engendered humankind - as well as nascent Tamil nationalists eager to promote the notion of a vast Tamil empire, now lost, whose sole contemporary remnant is the Tamil-speaking regions of Southernmost India and Northern Sri Lanka. It is on the role of this "lost world" in the elaboration of Tamil origins, identity, communal solidarity, and aspirations to nationhood that the author focuses.

Kumari Kandam is a land mass that is supposed to have sunk beneath the India Ocean sometime in middle to late prehistory, extending from the southern tip of peninsular India to Madagascar in the west, and Australia in the east. It is sometimes considered as part or all of Lemuria, a hypothetical continent variously located in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. References to Kumari Kandam can be found throughout the Tamil classical literature, detailing how that extensive land mass, the home of Tamil science, language and philosophy, occupied by the Tamil people in their peaceful and prosperous kingdoms since sentient life first emerged on the planet had been lost to the sea due to a succession of massive tidal waves and other catastrophes. Beginning amongst Europeans in the mid-nineteenth century, the more-or-less analogous Lemuria was imagined as a continent that once bridged India and Africa and disappeared into the ocean (either the Pacific or the Indian, depending on the account) millennia ago, much like Atlantis.

Ramaswamy's work is a sustained meditation on a lost place from a lost time, an elegantly written book that is (to my awareness) the first to explore Lemuria's incarnations across cultures, from Victorian-era science to Euro-American theosophical occultism to colonial and postcolonial India to the contemporary yearnings of Tamil nationalism and identity-building. The Lost Land of Lemuria widens into a provocative exploration of the poetics and politics of loss to consider how this sentiment manifests itself in a fascination with vanished homelands, hidden civilizations, near-forgotten peoples and lost greatness. More than a consideration of nostalgia, it shows how ideas once entertained but later discarded in the metropole can travel to the periphery--and can be appropriated by those seeking to construct a meaningful world within the disenchantment of modernity. Sumathi Ramaswamy ultimately reveals how loss itself has become a condition of modernity, compelling us to rethink the politics of imagination and creativity in our day.

Ramaswamy's book is not only beautifully written and a most engaging read, it is also an important book, one which will force scholars to look anew at fabulous legends of lost lands and forgotten civilizations generally and more particularly at the greatness and global significance of Tamil civilization.

The Myth of Shangri-la: Tibet, Travel Writing and the Western Creation of Sacred Landscape, by Peter Bishop

Shangri-la. An arcadia hidden in a remote, secluded valley. A vast, wind-swept plain cradled among the far away peaks of the Orient. Tibet. Beginning almost as a mere rumor in the mid-eighteenth century, Tibet evolved over the next century of industrialization into one of the last great sacred places of Victorian romanticism, taking on much of the mystery, power, and ambiguity of more traditionally experienced sacred spaces. In this masterful study, Peter Bishop examines Western travel writings on Tibet to trace the creation, fulfillment, and decline of the landscape of this fantastic place.

Bishop shows that travel does not discover worlds, but rather constructs them. He takes the Jungian stance that each Tibet has been the creation of the unconscious at work in the representatives of an era, imaginative practices coming to be understood as truth, truth subject to repeated revision. Each generation of writers reveals preoccupations, unfulfilled wishes, fears, and hopes as the unconscious is made conscious by its projection onto Tibet. By following the trail left by Western missionaries, soldiers, diplomats, mystics, traders, adventurers, and poets, Bishop uncovers the deep structure of the European imagination and plots its transformation in the making of the Tibetan myth.

The Myth of Shangri-la is not so concerned with the historical details of the exploration and development of Tibet as with the phenomenology of the imagination, the way Tibet was experienced and imagined in the Western world order. Bishop looks at where travellers were coming from more than where they were going, and in doing so he delineates the complex relationship among cultural imagination, physical landscape, and the sense of the sacred. His rich narrative and sustained recourse to diaries, letters, histories, and works of fiction make this a fascinating book that will be of interest to anyone interested in European cultural history and in the powers of the imagination.

Joan of Arc: The Image of Female Heroism, by Marina Warner

Joan has a unique role in Western imagination--she is one of the few true female heroes. Marina Warner uses her superb historical and literary skills to move beyond conventional biography and to capture the essence of Joan of Arc, both as she lived in her own time and as she has "grown" in the human imagination over the five centuries since her death. She has examined the court documents from Joan of Arc's 1431 Inquisition trial for heresy and woven the facts together with an analysis of the histories, biographies, plays, and paintings and sculptures that have appeared over time to honor this heroine and symbol of France's nationhood. Warner shows how the few facts that are known about the woman Joan have been shaped to suit the aims of those who have chosen her as their hero. The book places Joan in the context of the mythology of the female hero and takes note of her historical antecedents, both pagan and Christian and the role she has played up to the present as the embodiment of an ideal, whether as Amazon, saint, child of nature, or personification of virtue.

Review
"Elegantly written, thoughtful (as one would expect from the author of "Alone of All Her Sex), imaginative, sensitive. Warner ranges through iconographic, allegorical, literary, dramatic, operatic, cinematographic, linguistic, historical, biographical, and political evidence to present a history of Joan and of her subsequent representations."--"Choice

Only A Vague Resemblance to Joan's History
By A Customer
As a researcher who has done work on this subject, I tend to be baffled by the popularity of books such as this one. On the plus side, and to be fair, the author at least bothered to read some of the more reliable documents (such as the Rehabilitation transcript, Joan's surviving letters, etc) rather than merely the Condemnation transcript; but unfortunately the author didn't seem to pay much attention to the more reliable documents. Yet again, we have here a modern author who credulously accepts many of the accusations made by Joan's enemies while passing over the larger amount of evidence which soundly debunks those accusations, while mixing in a hefty dose of radical politics and speculation, plus page after page in which the text wanders through ancient legends and other such topics to the point that Joan herself is often obscured entirely. A good example of this is the "Ideal Androgyne" chapter, which ignores the extensive testimony from the Rehabilitation transcript: i.e., two of the men who escorted her to Chinon said that they were the ones who first brought up the subject of dressing her in soldiers' clothing (as was standard procedure when bringing a woman through dangerous territory), and several of the clergy who took part in her trial testified that she clung to this clothing and kept her pants and tunic "firmly laced and tied" (i.e., the pants were kept fastened to the tunic so they couldn't be forcibly pulled off) because she had been subjected to attempted rape at the hands of her guards and therefore was afraid of "being violated in the night", to quote one witness. To a scholar of the medieval period none of this comes as a surprise: it was common for women to adopt such clothing for their own defense, and medieval theologians - including St. Thomas Aquinas himself - had ruled that such conduct was permissible if it was being done out of necessity (the Church only condemned the practice if it was done for other reasons, a distinction which Joan's accusers deliberately ignored, as do many modern authors). Despite the author's claims to the contrary, this subject was in fact dealt with at the Rehabilitation, and in fact the Inquisitor devoted an entire section - Chapter 6 of his "Recollectio" - to that subject, and exonerated her of any wrongdoing on that front. He also ruled that her voices were not suspect (despite the author's claims to the contrary), and in fact declared her a martyr ("...for in very truth she always had good reason to trust in her apparitions, for they delivered her, just as they promised, from the prison of the body through martyrdom and a great victory of patience.") Warner's book replaces much of this evidence with speculation, endless political rhetoric, and modern philosophies which have nothing whatsoever to do with 15th century history.
On the point about Régine Pernoud: the charge that Pernoud was a hopeless fan of Charles VII who omitted to mention the letter about the siege of Paris is patently false: the entire text of that letter is included (both in the original language and in translation) in Pernoud's book "Joan of Arc: Her Story" [called simply "Jeanne d'Arc" in the French version], and many of her books contain scathing criticisms of Charles VII. Scholars consider Pernoud to have been one of the best authors on this subject because she was accurate, thorough, and honest in her presentation of the evidence, which is not something that can be said about the book currently under review. And there lies the crux of the issue: historical writing is supposed to be based upon documented evidence, properly analyzed in light of the circumstances of the time period, rather than a mishmash of modern-day politics superimposed upon historical figures and events. This book falls into the latter category, unfortunately.

fair play and the interpretation of a legend
By Julia Walker
Warner's book has more archival material and historical background detail than any other single work in this price-range or level of reader-access. Yes, Warner also presents opinions, as scholar/critics tend to do.
If, however, you turn to Regine Pernoud for an "unbiased" version of Joan's life -- whatever that might be -- you are on much more dangerous ground. Pernoud conveys opinion by omission; if a document is at odds with her reading of Joan's life or actions, she simply ignores it, leaving it unmentioned. An example of this is a crucial letter Joan dictated on the necessity of taking Paris. Yes, Pernoud IS French (or rather, she was), and she writes as though she has on-line access to 15th-century feelings and personal opinions -- a big problem, in my view. But Pernoud's relentlessly pro-Charles interpretation of events is much more distorting and misleading than anything generated by Warner's British feminism, which is fairly presented as the lense through which the material will be viewed.
If you want another good book on Joan, try Charles Wood's study of Joan and Richard II.
No one scholar is going to write a book which satisfies everyone on such a complex figure. But Warner is a good place to start reading and/or thinking about Joan of Arc.

This book appears to follow the currently trendy practice of piling up all of the collected dead wood of past opinions while largely ignoring the evidence - evidence which is exhaustive and indisputable in the case of Joan of Arc. We know that she was not a 'rebel against the Church' - that was proven by the Inquisition at the Rehabilitation Trial in the 1450s (the presiding Inquisitor at this trial described her as a martyr for the Catholic faith, for heaven's sake). We know that she wore male clothing only to protect herself against sexual abuse - that was also proven by the testimony at the retrial, and echoed at many points in Joan's own testimony at the Condemnation Trial in 1431. Her political opponents tried to claim otherwise, as does Marina Warner; but they should have known better than that.
Ironically, the prologue tells us that "unlike a fictional character, she does not belong to the mind of a writer... She has objective reality". Quite true. So why not let that objective reality shine forth through the fog of opinion, bias, and propaganda? All I can say is: there are other authors who are far more honest with the facts.

The Failure of Environmental Education (And How We Can Fix It), by Charles Saylan, Daniel T. Blumstein

At a time when wild places everywhere are vanishing before our eyes, Charles Saylan and Daniel T. Blumstein offer this passionate indictment of environmental education—along with a new vision for the future. Writing for general readers and educators alike, Saylan and Blumstein boldly argue that education today has failed to reach its potential in fighting climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. In this forward-looking book, they assess the current political climate, including the No Child Left Behind Act, a disaster for environmental education, and discuss how education can stimulate action—including decreasing consumption and demand, developing sustainable food and energy sources, and addressing poverty. Their multidisciplinary perspective encompasses such approaches as school gardens, using school buildings as teaching tools, and the greening of schoolyards. Arguing for a paradigm shift in the way we view education as a whole, The Failure of Environmental Education demonstrates how our education system can create new levels of awareness and work toward a sustainable future.

From the Inside Flap
“The hope for the future depends on teaching current and future students the analytical and critical thinking skills for dealing with the most critical problems. My own hope is for this book to be read by everyone, even those outside the field of environmental education. Read this book, read it again, share it widely, and do something - anything - to help our needy and wounded planet."-Marc Bekoff, author of The Animal Manifesto: Six Reasons For Expanding Our Compassion Footprint

"Saylan and Blumstein provide a compelling vision of what can be, and what should be, if we have the courage to open our eyes and the boldness to act.”-Peter Saundry, Ph.D., Executive Director of the National Council for Science and the Environment

“A clarion call to incorporate environmental education in all grades K-12, across all academic disciplines, in order to produce future generations of environmental stewards."-Mark Gold, President, Heal The Bay

"We need a sea change in the educational system. After all, if we can teach schoolchildren that vandalism is wrong, why can we not teach them that environmental destruction is wrong? This book is a haunting call to action. A beautifully written manifesto that gets it right."-Ron Swaisgood, Director of Applied Animal Ecology, Institute for Conservation Research, San Diego Zoo Global

“The greatest threat to the future of all species on the planet is the huge gap between what is understood about global climate change by the scientific community and what is known about climate change by the people who need to know -- the public. The sound prescriptions in this book need to be read now. We are running out of time.”-Dr. James Hansen, world-renowned climatologist and author of Storms of My Grandchildren: The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity

“Environmental education is a disaster and educating the public on environmental issues is the greatest challenge facing humanity today. This book will help us understand why we are headed toward the collapse of civilization, and more important, how to fix it. Packed with sound science, useful information, and brilliant ideas, it is a book we must read, and give, to our local school boards and principals nationwide. Our children will thank us."-Paul R. Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb and Humanity on a Tightrope

Must read
By Michael O. Navarro
The authors bravely review challenges and consequences of the US environmental education system to present the fact that we are not solving many environmental problems and that these problems are more of a threat now than ever. This fast-paced book connects the dots between traditionally separated disciplines (ecology, climate change, conservation, educational policy, pedagogy, social inequities, economics, policy history, etc.) to deliver a hard hitting message:

Our future generations are too important to not be adequately prepared for the environmental challenges that they will face, we need to provide them with the tools necessary to succeed, and we need to prepare them now!

What is great about this book is that the authors share their personal experiences to create a "blue-print" as to how American's can start by working together to depoliticize discussions about the environment. The style of writing is refreshing and comes across as a conversation between equals (authors and the reader). Also refreshing is that the authors stress the importance of the message by presenting facts not by focusing on unsupported interpretations. As a reader, I was allowed to look through a "window" to see for myself the epic environmental issues that threaten humanity and how students/future generations are not being adequately prepared to deal with these issues. Far from doomsday, the authors empower the reader with facts that these challenges can be met with some change. I hope to read a sequel that discusses how these changes actually play out.

Great buy and a must read for all educators, parents, and politicians.

An insightful approach to an education dilemma
By PB
I've worked in the area of business development for companies producing products for education and behavioral health clients for a dozen years. I see issues in the field of education from a pragmatic viewpoint that is often completely off the radar scope of mainstream educators.

"The Failure of Environmental Education" identifies one if these critical issues. Should education prepare students to be actively involved in our community as citizens? If so, how should educators accomplish this? I would answer the first question in the affirmative;and I suggest that no field of study warrants a need for taking what is learned in the classroom out to the public square more than environmental education.

This book argues strongly for incorporating practical citizenship skills into the content of environmental education; and it does so none too soon. If not now when? "The Failure of Environmental Education" is an important read for educators and environmental activists alike. It is a topic that warrants public discussion followed by action. This book initiates the discussion and proposes some practical steps for moving from discussion to implementation.

A must read for students and educators
By Marc Bekoff
This is one of the most important books written to date about why environmental education has failed and why if we don't do better we, other animals, and fragile, magnificent, and complex ecosystems and webs of nature are doomed. The authors are renowned experts in this field and we should be thankful to them for taking the time to write this excellent and forward-looking book. Read it, read it again, and share widely. It is that important.

Frontiers and Ghettos: State Violence in Serbia and Isræl, by James Ron

James Ron uses controversial comparisons between Serbia and Israel to present a novel theory of state violence. Formerly a research consultant to Human Rights Watch and the International Red Cross, Ron witnessed remarkably different patterns of state coercion. Frontiers and Ghettos presents an institutional approach to state violence, drawing on Ron's field research in the Middle East, Balkans, Chechnya, Turkey, and Africa, as well as dozens of rare interviews with military veterans, officials, and political activists on all sides. Studying violence from the ground up, the book develops an exciting new framework for analyzing today's nationalist wars.

Review
"In the best tradition of social science research, Ron examines state-directed violence to find out not how states ought to act but how they do act. A well-documented study [within a] sophisticated framework."--"Foreign Affairs"

From the Inside Flap
"Frontiers and Ghettos is based on the idea that when it comes to ethnopolitical conflict, lousy is better than horrible. How outcomes better than horrible arise, despite ideological imperatives, hatreds, and predatory opportunities, is brilliantly analyzed in this empirically rich, vividly written, and provocative comparison of Serbian and Israeli policies toward Croatians, Muslims and Palestinians. A terrific book!"—Ian S. Lustick, author of Unsettled States, Disputed Lands

"Abusive governments try to avoid leaving fingerprints on acts of repression, often using paramilitaries or death squads for deniability. James Ron reveals that territorial boundaries can serve a similar function. Abuse is more likely, he shows, as one crosses the frontiers of established state power, obscuring the signature of official action. This original and insightful book encourages us to expose cross-border involvement in human rights violations and re-establish official accountability."—Kenneth Roth, Executive Director, Human Rights Watch

"With terrifying lucidity, Ron uses the experiences of Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Israel, and Palestine to examine how a state's definition of the boundary separating its favored population from a different people authorizes, channels, or inhibits its use of force. This veteran participant-observer uses first-hand observation tellingly."—Charles Tilly, author of Durable Inequality

"Frontiers and Ghettos represents a major step forward in social science's effort to understand state violence. James Ron shows that while all states use violence, they do so differently in their well-policed interiors and at their margins. This book is powerful, timely, and important for both scholars, policy-makers, and those who would advance respect for human rights."—Craig Calhoun, President, Social Science Research Council

"James Ron has written a strikingly clear and convincing study of the factors affecting controlled and uncontrolled state-directed violence in the current period, with an analysis that adds substantially to the sociology of the state. His book will be important for all those concerned—for scholarly reasons and for broader ones—with modern confrontations of world norms, state power and human rights. And its gripping accounts will be important for those concerned with the specific violent conflicts it examines, in Serbia and Israel."—John W. Meyer, Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, Stanford University

"This ingenious and courageous comparison of the types of violence used by nationalist regimes should transform the way we think about borders and state sovereignty. In demonstrating that even the most unsavory governments can be sensitive to international norms and the appearance of legality, Ron also strikes a serious blow at standard policy prescriptions -- from imposing sanctions and isolation on offending regimes to offering autonomy packages and soft borders for ethnic minorities. This book deserves wide circulation and serious reflection."—Susan L. Woodward, author of Balkan Tragedy: Chaos and Dissolution after the Cold War

"As the horrific escalation of violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories grips international headlines, the inability of commentators to locate these tragic events in a comparative analytical frame is striking. This book is an impressive exception. Ron's elegant comparative analysis of Serbia and earlier periods of Israeli-Palestinian conflict makes the dynamics of the present conflict and its future possibilities comprehensible in a way that few others have managed to do. It is a signal contribution to our understanding of modern state violence."—Peter Evans, Eliaser Chair of International Studies, University of California, Berkeley

The philosophers have only interpreted the world...
By Edward G. Nilges
"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it. (Marx 1845 Theses on Feurbach)"

I find this book informative but its theorizing useless and strange.

It is factually comprehensive as regards state violence in Serbia and in Israel, which, as the author demonstrates, differed in frontier zones (such as south Lebanon and Bosnia after its recognition as a state) versus internal zones (such as the West Bank and the Sanjak).

However, the horrific descriptions of daily life in the West Bank from 1967 to about 2000 only seem to imply that there the Israelis insisted upon a monopoly of force and a formalistic imitation of Western rights which most of the time, but not all of the time, meant that captives were beaten and not slaughtered wholesale.

The author actually wants to believe that as a social "scientist" he has discovered an ontological difference between ghettoisation of subject peoples without the rights of the main ethnic group, and their existence in a frontier.

Strangely, he does not test this theory against the Holocaust, for the Holocaust falsifies his theory.

The Nazis re-created the mediaeval and 19th century ghettos of Poland and other Eastern European countries only as a way station to the Shoah, in which they in fact treated their subject populations (not only Jews but also Roma, confessional Christians, and dissidents) as an internal "frontier".

It is true that in incompletely conquered areas of Russia, einsatzgruppen carried out crude mass exterminations using a variety of uncoordinated troops including the SS and the regular Army but contrary to the theory here, the Nazis seldom countenanced private armies or subcontracted exermination, while the Israelis, we know, subcontracted the Christian militia of Lebanon to carry out the 1982 massacre and Milosevic aided the Bosnian Serbs.

But once it was clear to the Nazi leadership that these actions were ineffective and causing resistance, they ghettoised the subject populations, and proceeded to a step which on Ron's theory wasn't supposed to be taken.

Nor does Ron test his theory against the Tsarist oppression of the jews after the 1882 assassination of Alexander. The Jews were already in ghettos in the Pale of Settlement, but the Tsarist state wanted to wreak vengeance on the "terrorists", and unleashed, IN AN INTERNAL FRONTIERIZATION of lands under the Tsar's control, private armies of Cossacks against the Jews...in mayhem that on Ron's theory never happened, but somehow caused the mass immigration of Eastern Europe's Jews to the USA in the late nineteenth century.

There is, in Ron's book, the false humility of the proud pseudo-scientist who has announced his "ground breaking" theory but then proceeds to confess that he isn't qualified to crack a history book or test his theory anywhere but his proper zone of research, which reminds me of what Adorno said about the self-moronization of this type of deliberately narrowed social research.

I am certain that variants of Ron's theory were aired in comfortable parlors of the 1930s: give the Nazis the opportunities to create ghettos and they will calm down.

This book illustrates Marx's theses on Feuerbach. From a sheerly scientific standpoint, social theory is so self-reflexive, so unavoidably a part of the phenomenon it describes, that it is profoundly UNSCIENTIFIC to pretend to be able to stand off from the world, whether at McGill or anywhere else, and so theorize as to avoid having that theory be used as an excuse or a pretext for mass murder.

What this means is that the first duty of social theory is Hippocratic, do no harm, first not by uttering a theory with such a stunning historical counter-example and secondly not by arming the bad guys with an excuse for creating one more ghetto.

I am alarmed by James Ron, not because he is from Israel or served in the Israeli army, for he seems to fully realize that Israel is illegitimate all the way down, for it defines full political personhood ethnically.

Perhaps there is something ineradicably brutalizing about military training and military service in a situation unjust all the way down, such that in a later career, the foundational brutalization emerges in such an extraordinarily stunning fashion.

"Oh, people getting killed...just give the murderers a nice little Guantanamo, a nice little Theriesenstadt, in which they can with de facto legitimacy stuff silenced and inconvenient victims so we can all feel good, and theorize, and get tenure".

THE POINT IS TO CHANGE IT.

Reading Voices: Literature and the Phonotext, by Garrett Stewart

"At last, a scrupulous and sustained--'earsighted'--study of that shadowy yet vital intersection of sound and sense without which literary reading remains a disembodied exercise. . . . Stewart immerses us brilliantly in the poststructural method of a 'phonemic' analysis."--Geoffrey H. Hartman, author of Saving the Text "Stunningly articulate. . . . Alongside brilliant exegeses of passsages from the major English poets, Stewart offers new and dazzling interpretations of the 'poetics of prose' in such novelists as Dickens, Lawrence, Joyce, and Woolf. The book is a tour de force, no doubt about it. In my opinion, Reading Voices will have not only a wide but a lasting reception."--Hayden White, author of Metahistory "This is exciting, virtuoso work in a playfully imaginative hermeneutic mode. Stewart's ear hears fascinating and compelling things, things which have a delightfully rich and thematically complex bearing on much larger textual issues."--Paul Fry, author of The Reach of Criticism "A truly original book. . . . The first work in years to bring together linguistically informed criticism with more philosophically oriented literary theory. The resulting vision of literature is odd, personal, passionate, even outlandish. Not only is Stewart himself and extraordinary stylist, but his work suggests a breakthrough in stylistic criticism so radical as to revitalize the entire field."--Jay Clayton, author of Romantic Vision and the Novel

The objective of this monograph is to describe the results of numerical modeling of the detonation process for condensed explosives performed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory over the last two decades. Models for describing the performance and initiation of explosives are under continuing investigation at laboratories in various countries. This monograph will be useful as a review of previous work and will indicate areas where additional studies may permit increased understanding of detonation physics and chemistry. Another objective is to describe the methods used to model numerically, in one and two dimensions, the reactive dynamics of condensed explosives and their interaction with other materials. This monograph is used as the text for a series of seven training lectures available on color video tape (VT-78-2) from LASL library.

The Selected Letters of Robert Creeley, by Robert Creeley

Robert Creeley is one of the most celebrated and influential American poets. A stylist of the highest order, Creeley imbued his correspondence with the literary artistry he brought to his poetry. Through his engagements with mentors such as William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound, peers such as Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, Denise Levertov, Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac, and mentees such as Charles Bernstein, Anselm Berrigan, Ed Dorn, Susan Howe, and Tom Raworth, Creeley helped forge a new poetry that re-imagined writing for his and subsequent generations. This first-ever volume of his letters, written between 1945 and 2005, document the life, work, and times of one of our greatest writers, and represent a critical archive of the development of contemporary American poetry, as well as the changing nature of letter-writing and communication in the digital era.

Review
"This is an immense, fascinating milestone." (The Buffalo News 2014-02-09)

From the Inside Flap
"Along with his poetic hero, William Carlos Williams, Robert Creeley is the great 20th century American poet of the everyday. In these letters, beautifully and meticulously edited and annotated, we get to the see Creeley’s daily life and thoughts up-close, informal, familial, immediate, generous, grieved, stuffed to the brim with poetic insights. These letters show Creeley as exemplary in his support of younger poets who rejected a poetics of complacency that reigns now, as it did in his time. They reveal how he championed the radical modernists of the generation before him. And most important, they place him in the company of those of his own generation in their successful transformation of postwar poetic thinking. 'There is nothing that does not yield its beauty to that sight, not one human term that will not come true there.'” —Charles Bernstein, author of Attack of the Difficult Poems

"Great to watch Bob’s unique style be born and transfigured over years of contact with his chosen company. As he goes to amazing places, always exactly there, speaking to circumstance and stalking circumstance, certainly. Personal address the foundation of both the poetry and the life—a beautifully enacted poetics and ethic." —Alice Notley

Lawrence Altman has authored the only complete history of the controversial and understudied practice of self-experimentation. In telling the stories of pioneering researchers, Altman offers a history of many of the most important medical advancements in recent years as well as centuries past—from anesthesia to yellow fever to heart disease. With a new preface, he brings readers up to date and continues his discussion of the ethics and controversy that continue to surround a practice that benefits millions but is understood by few.

Amazon.com Review
"Medical research." When most of us hear those words, our imagination conjures up bored graduates with white jackets in a sterile porcelain laboratory, knowing no more about their subjects than ID number and blood type. This depersonalization of modern science is a myth, of course, but a powerful one that guides the way science is perceived and performed. This myth neglects or marginalizes the work of those men and women who take the human aspects of their research so seriously that they feel compelled to experiment on themselves. Who Goes First? tells their stories and thus gives us a view of medical research that diverges from the alienation of the nameless number heads.

Lawrence K. Altman has pursued research on the subject of medical self-experimentation since his days as a medical student, and this personal interest shines throughout the book. His writing is smart and enthusiastic, shedding light on a little-discussed aspect of research that raises important questions of ethics and scientific validity. Can a researcher be as objective about his or her own reactions to a drug as to a stranger's reactions? Should a scientist subject others to risks that he or she wouldn't take personally? What, if anything, do we have to gain from self-experimentation?

As you might imagine, this book is not for the squeamish. Even if you're not put off by the ocean of body fluids, you may find the terrors of curare-induced paralysis or life under quarantine a bit troubling. Still, for those willing or eager to confront such details, Who Goes First? provides an outstanding, highly readable introduction to the rehumanization of medical research. --Rob Lightner

From Library Journal
The ethical implications of self-experimentation are not the focus of this fascinating book. Yet the subject arises frequently as Altman explores developments in a variety of medical disciplines such as cardiology, anesthesiology, pharmacology, and parasitology. Names long associated with autoexperimentation, such as Louis Pasteur and Walter Reed, lose some luster and other names gain recognition in this collection of biographical and clinical accounts. A popular medical writer, Dr. Altman blends an easy style with meticulous research. His use of primary source material, personal interviews, and retrospective literature is impressive. This book far surpasses J. Franklin and J. Sutherland's Guinea Pig Doctors ( LJ 3/1/84) and is highly recommended for academic, medical, and public libraries. Mary Hemmings, McGill Univ. Medical Lib., Montreal

A Magnificent Book
By K. L Sadler
This is one of the few nonfictional books that I have ever read that I have literally had a hard time putting it down. Dr. Altman not only wrote a book of significant importance about the need for self-experimentation, and the history of it...but he wrote it so well that I wanted to know what and who did the next group of experiments. It also explained a lot of procedures I learned about in medical school, but sometimes without the knowledge of the history behind it complete understanding is impossible. The author also explains quite clearly why we can't use just animals in experimentation, and gives numerous illustrations of physicians and scientists who...surprise!...actually think about others compassionately and are able to put themselves in the shoes of the patients. After undergoing an experimental cochlear implant which failed (in its early days), this book makes it a lot easier for me to explain to others why I undertook such a risk and didn't sue when it failed and made me ill. The book also makes clear the need for both patient and doctor awareness of informed consent...for all patients, including those who are disabled or those who lack a complete education. Dr. Altman wrote a book that should definitely be required reading by all medical personnel in ethics classes. Karen L. Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu

Informative, well-written and a page turner as well
By Metallurgist
This book is a classic - informative and well written. Dr. Altman writes with clarity, imparting a lot of medical information in an exciting manner. This is a rare non-fiction book that is a page-turner as well as being very informative. The book details stories of doctors and medical scientists who used themselves to test inoculations against diseases, new medicines, and to learn more about the working of the human body and disease processes. They studied the workings of the heart, the cause and treatment of yellow fever and other viral diseases, parasitic diseases such as malaria, fungal and bacterial diseases, diet deficiency diseases such as scurvy and pellagra, blood diseases, cancer, and many more. Many of these experiments were dangerous and a few researchers died from them. The book not only describes these experiments, but also goes into the motivation of the researchers and the deeper question as to the ethics of self-experimentation. Dr. Altman feels not only that it is ethical for a researcher to go first, but also endorses this procedure, and in the final chapter of the book he explains the benefits of doing so. In fact, he goes further and questions the behavior of experimenters who can go first, but choose not to experiment on themselves, even to the extent of suggesting that one should not participate in an experiment unless the experimenter has gone first (unless there is a good reason why this is not possible or advisable).

This book was written more than 20 years ago, but it is timeless in the information provided, the questions that it raises, and the high quality of the writing. I recommend this book to those interested in medicine, science, and history, and to all those who just like to read a well-written and exciting book.

Great read. Fascinating stories.
By topdog
Fascinating history of an aspect of medical research not widely known. Many great breakthroughs in medicine were the result of researchers experimenting on themselves. Interesting bioethical issues.
