The 1911-1920: American Film Institute Catalog of Motion Pictures Produced in the United States: Feature Films (The AFI Catalog of Motion P

The American Film Institute Catalog volumes easily surpass all other film reference books for comprehensiveness, reliability, and utility. In a field bedevilled by quickly assembled and slipshod reference works, the Catalogs are the one essential purchase for every library. This set of volumes, on the teen years, covers a pivotal period in film history, encompassing the birth of the feature film and the development of the "film language" that still structures virtually all narrative films today. The decade saw the rise of stars, and of directors who left their creative mark on decades to come—Griffith, Ince, De Mille. Small firms gave way to consolidated studios. And film production relocated to the Southern California town whose name became synonymous with American films: Hollywood. Classics of the era such as De Mille's The Cheat and Griffith's Intolerance have reached popular audiences, and many others are being distributed on videocassette. New scholarly attention is focusing on the decade—especially on such questions as how stage melodrama elements were gradually incorporated into film narrative. But since film is also a record of folkways and national concerns, the rich materials catalogued here will be invaluable to social or cultural historians. As John Fell, author of Film and the Narrative Tradition, comments: "In a real sense, the AFI Catalog preserves and revitalizes old movies that will otherwise disappear . . . [it] will increasingly serve an audience far broader than motion picture history alone."

From Library Journal
At long last, the AFI Catalog continues with this exhaustive set. Volume 1 lists nearly 5200 American feature films alphabetically, with cast and credits, source, copyright date, length (in reels), synopsis, subject and genre notations, notes, and for the first time in the series, trade periodical and newspaper review citations. Volume 2 is comprised entirely of indexes (many also new for the series) by personal name, distributor/producer, genre, geographic location, literary/dramatic source, and subject. This last index is particularly valuable and unique; here one may find the films that deal with, for instance, sheriffs, weddings, locales, prostitution, and (a personal favorite) rent collectors. To call this truly massive work--the product of a national arrary of researchers and archives--definitive and sorely needed is to understate the case. This set also helps to heal the howling controversy that arose when the AFI got Hollywoody and dismantled the educational/library departments in the early 1970s, after issuing Catalog volumes for 1921-30 (1971, LJ 12/15/71) and 1960-69 (1976, LJ 7/76). Now in long-term planning stages are not only volumes for the remaining decades but similar sets for short films and newsreels. The AFI has finally come to its senses (and proper sense of purpose). Welcome back.

Review
"Movies may not be bigger and better than ever, but the books about them certainly are.A huge three-volume set is the latest in a marvelous reference series an understaffed AFI crew has been working on doggedly for more than 30 years. An irreplaceable contribution to American film." -- Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times Book Review

From the Inside Flap
"The entire field of film historians awaits the AFI volumes with eagerness."—Eileen Bowser, Museum of Modern Art Film Department

Reactions to earlier volumes:

"A triumph of exact scholarship. . . .endlessly absorbing as an excursion into cultural history and national memory."—Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.

"An unequalled guide to the film sources of our history (and also to film history)."—Daniel Boorstin, Librarian of Congress

The Figurative Sculpture of Magdalena Abakanowicz: Bodies, Environments, and Myths, by Joanna Inglot

Since the early 1980s, the Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz (b. 1930) has gained worldwide acclaim for her role in the revival of figuration in late-twentieth-century sculpture. Her cycles of headless, hollow, and crude burlap crowds of the mid-1970s and the 1980s, exhibited in major museums across America, Europe, and Asia, are roundly praised for their expressive power and innovative form. In this first scholarly art historical analysis of Abakanowicz's figurative sculpture, Joanna Inglot penetrates the myth of isolation that surrounds and obscures this internationally celebrated artist to disclose the artistic, sociopolitical, and cultural context in which Abakanowicz has lived and worked.

Examining Abakanowicz's representations of the human body from the fiber works of the 1960s known as Abakans through her War Games and outdoor environments of the 1980s and early 1990s, Inglot shows how these works engage the international art scene and the figurative sculpture of postwar Poland, and how they reflect a particular generation's experience of war and communism. With reference to Abakanowicz's use of national symbols and ceremonies drawn from the public and political discourse of the 1970s and 1980s, Inglot explains the complexity of the artist's attitudes toward contemporary politics and the troubled history of her native country. Inglot clearly locates Abakanowicz as a major contemporary sculptor whose works have embodied innovations in style and media and reflected important sociopolitical issues.

From the Inside Flap
"An exceptionally intelligent study. Joanna Inglot clearly knows both her subject and the complicated circumstances in Poland that have helped to shape Magdalena Abakanowicz."—Dore Ashton, editor of Twentieth-Century Artists on Art

"This is the first truly independent and in-depth study of the most widely known Polish artist, Magdalena Abakanowicz. Considering Abakanowicz's work in both Polish and international contexts, Inglot provides an invaluable critical assessment of the artist's attainment and the myth that surrounds it. Informed, lucid, and clearly written, this is a key book that changes our understanding of Abakanowicz's work and, more broadly, our perception of Polish art after the Second World War."—Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Professor of History of Art and Architecture, Harvard University

"Working with non-traditional materials in non-traditional genres and fiercely guarding her autonomy against interpretation, Magdalena Abakanowicz carved her niche as an artist. Joanna Inglot's vivid portrait of her is also an impressive account of Polish tradition, of the innovative artists of postwar Poland, and of Abakanowicz's stature as one of the most powerful figurative sculptors from the 1960s through the present."—Eva Forgacs, author of The Bauhaus Idea and Bauhaus Politics

"This fine example of artistic monograph recasts Abakanowicz's international renown against the intricate background of her Polish roots. By recounting the artist's evolution from textile artist to fiber sculptor within the context of Poland's postwar struggle with issues of contemporary art, this book makes clear that Abakanowicz's work is more closely tied to her Polish heritage than even she would want to admit. Joanna Inglot's sensitive narrative underscores the universal message of Abakanowicz's compelling forms and challenges the longstanding perception that East European art was isolated during the Cold War era."—Myroslava M. Mudrak, author of The New Generation and Artistic Modernism in the Ukraine

"A masterfully executed study that combines the gripping story of Magdalena Abakanowicz's art and life with a thoughtful and precise reconstruction of the political and cultural realities of state socialism that formed the inescapable context of her work. Joanna Inglot illuminates also the intellectual and aesthetic ideas that enabled Abakanowicz to transcend this context and become an international star."—Jan Kubik, author of The Power of Symbols Against the Symbols of Power: The Rise of Solidarity and the Fall of State Socialism in Poland

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING
By Gratis
The title of this book promised a lot: I was expecting a definitive survey of Magdalena Abakanowicz' figurative sculpture, but what I got was a very academic, self-opinionated rant from someone who gives the impression of being insanely jealous of the artist's accomplishments.
While Joanna Inglot states that "I had planned to provide comprehensive photographic documentation of Abakanowicz' most important works.... as well as the text of Portrait x 20...", the book contains none of this because Ms Inglot refused to allow the artist to review the manuscript - a condition for permission to use images. And little wonder that she didn't want it reviewed by the artist whose work is the subject of the book: text full of inference and innuendo and suggestions that the artist concocted her own life story to somehow invent a persona which matched her artistic aspirations. I can't remember ever reading such a biased and self-opinionated piece.
The author seemingly regards herself as the authority on this artist and the tone of her writing gives the impression that her academic status makes her superior to not only the artist but anyone else who has ever written about her. For example, Ms Inglot dismissively describes one highly regarded book as a "coffee table book", and makes a point of describing her own writings as "scholarly". I don't think so!
What could have been a well-rounded complete survey of Magdalena Abakanowicz' figurative sculpture, is instead very lightweight in terms of illustrations and contributed text from the artist. And all because Ms Inglot seemingly let her ego get in the way, quote: "...scholarly books do not need authorisation by their subjects, only by their authors...". A sad waste of a great opportunity.

The DinosauriaFrom University of California Press

When the The Dinosauria was first published more than a decade ago, it was hailed as "the best scholarly reference work available on dinosaurs" and "an historically unparalleled compendium of information." This second, fully revised edition continues in the same vein as the first but encompasses the recent spectacular discoveries that have continued to revolutionize the field. A state-of-the-science view of current world research, the volume includes comprehensive coverage of dinosaur systematics, reproduction, and life history strategies, biogeography, taphonomy, paleoecology, thermoregulation, and extinction. Its internationally renowned authors—forty-four specialists on the various members of the Dinosauria—contribute definitive descriptions and illustrations of these magnificent Mesozoic beasts.

The first section of The Dinosauria begins with the origin of the great clade of these fascinating reptiles, followed by separate coverage of each major dinosaur taxon, including the Mesozoic radiation of birds. The second part of the volume navigates through broad areas of interest. Here we find comprehensive documentation of dinosaur distribution through time and space, discussion of the interface between geology and biology, and the paleoecological inferences that can be made through this link. This new edition will be the benchmark reference for everyone who needs authoritative information on dinosaurs.

From Library Journal
Here, at last, is an authoritative, scholarly review of current dinosaur research. International experts wrote the individual chapters and, although the style is very technical, there is a lot here for interested amateurs. The first short section describes dinosaur biology, relationships, and distribution. It features, among other things, an interesting discussion of the recent dinosaur controversies (comet-related extinctions, warm-bloodedness, etc.) and a list (with maps) of worldwide dinosaur sites. The second section is a detailed dinosaur taxonomy that tends toward involved descriptions of bones, but it also has good information about the discovery and paleoecology of the different groups. The excellent bibliography, containing more than 2500 entries, will be especially useful for those who want more than just popular accounts of dinosaurs. Highly recommended for academic and large public libraries.

"The first freewheeling collaboration between specialists in the Eastern Bloc, China and the West. . . . No other work has every single scaled, plated, horned and fanged player lined up for inspection."--Milo Miles, "LA Weekly

This book is fantastic. It's it very in depth regarding dinosaur phylogeny which is exactly what I was looking for. I wouldn't recommend it to someone without some biology background but if you are looking for a more recent, scientifically in-depth book on the subject this is wonderful!

Wonderfully (and unexpectedly) helpful!
By Andy Epton
I purchased the first edition of this amazing book years ago when I was still a student in Geology during my field camp. Part of my field camp experience was continuing the excavation of dinosaur bones started some years before. We knew that they were sauropod bones and it was then believed that we were excavating apatosaur vertebrae. I was casually looking through my new purchase and came across a diagram comparing sauropod vertebrae. The diagram compared vertebrae from Apatosaurus and Camarasaurus. Based on this diagram, I was able to reinterpret our findings as being from a Camarasaurus not the Apatosaurus that the initial interpretation said. Given that I'm a life-long dino nut and this all happened on my birthday, I can't help but be proud of my first (and thus far only) dinosaur identification.

I know I'm supposed to review the book, but I had to share that. This book is fantastic!

Best book on dinosaurs ever - till the next edition...
By Oliver Rauhut
This is a technical book on dinosaurs, covering their systematics, anatomy, diversity, ecology, distribution, physiology, and many other topics, written by leading experts in the field of dinosaur research. It has been completely updated and largely rewritten from the first edition, and the editors did a great job in keeping a common structure especially to the first chapters despite the high number of authors involved.

In the first part of this book, each group of dinosaurs is introduced, with a detailed description of the anatomy, systematics, and ecology of the animals included. The second section starts with an extremely helpful overview of dinosaur localities known from around the globe and then illuminates topics such as dinosaur biogeography, physiology, and extinction. The book is complemented with an extensive list of technical references of dinosaurs, which will be invaluable for any student of these amazing creatures.

Though not necessarily aimed at the general reader, it is certainly a must have for anybody interested in natural history, dinosaurs, or palaeontology in general. This is, arguably, the best, but certainly the most informative book on dinosaurs yet published!

It is a Good Day to Die, by Herman J. Viola

I was not sorry at all.  I was a happy boy.  Those white men had come to kill our mothers and fathers and us, and it was our country (Black Elk, Oglala Sioux). Known to generations of white Americans as "Custer's Last Stand" or the Battle of Little Bighorn, it was, to the Plains Indians, the Battle of the Greasy Grass--a great, if short-lived victory against the whites who would soon overrun their country and destroy their way of life. Now, for the first time in a book for children, the story of the Greasy Grass battle is told from the Indian point of view, in a series of dramatic eyewitness vignettes.  Assembled from the recollections of twelve Indian participants in the battle, the book is divided into thirty brief chapters that, together, create a compelling narrative of the battle and the events that preceded it: Sitting Bull's vision of white soldiers falling into his camp "like grasshoppers," Custer's impetuous advance and attack, and finally, his dramatic defeat. An introduction and epilogue provide the historical context and a chronology, bibliographic note, maps, and more than a dozen archival photographs make this an outstanding curriculum item. The voices assembled here create a dramatic memorial to a fabled event in the history of the American West.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-A standard history for young readers involves a carefully unbiased author who assembles a coherent account from various primary and (more usually) secondary sources. Viola has taken a more daring approach. He features excerpts from the memoirs of various participants and observers of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, arranged in such a way as to provide a sense of the chaotic, violent flow of that day. Since no whites survived the battle, all of the witnesses are Native Americans, but some of them worked as scouts for the U.S. Army and thus saw the battle from a different perspective than the victors. The testimony of the narratorsAincluding such prominent figures as Sitting Bull and Black Elk, as well as "unknowns"Ais direct and vivid, revealing aspects of Native American psychology and details of battle preparation. An introduction and epilogue accompany the eyewitness accounts, thus providing readers with an overview of events leading up to, and subsequent to, the battle itself. While the inclusion of multiple narrators might be confusing, readers can consult Viola's biographical notes to identify each speaker. Furthermore, the possible confusion can in a certain sense be defended as an analogue to the disorientation of battle. The note on sources allows for further and more in-depth research. A few black-and-white reproductions and maps are scattered throughout. This is a brief, but powerful, book about an event that still attracts much attention.

From Booklist
Gr. 5^-8. Viola, a former director of the National Anthropological Archives, has gathered together the accounts of Indians who took part in the battle that was known to whites as Custer's Last Stand and to Native Americans as the Battle of the Greasy Grass. The battle, at Little Bighorn River in 1876 was a resounding defeat for the U.S. Cavalry under the leadership of Lt. Col. George Custer, with more than 250 soldiers dead. But in the long run, the battle proved ruinous to the Great Plains Indians, who were pursued by cavalry until the vast majority surrendered and went to live on reservations. Viola alternates accounts of such well-known Indian leaders as Sitting Bull and Antelope Woman with those of ordinary Indian observers and participants. The effective introduction and epilogue frame the compelling eyewitness recitations. Even with maps, it is not always easy to picture the logistics of the Indian raid, but descriptions offer sturdy revelations and a way for young readers to walk around in other people's shoes. Only the introduction and epilogue have black-and-white pictures, and those are small, though crisp. Biographical notes identify the speakers. Ilene Cooper

battle realities
By M. Heiss
This one is for your older children. The narratives of the survivors of the Battle of Little Bighorn speak right out from the pages; they are fascinating. There is plenty of talk about the fighting and deaths. Parents may want to pre-read. Still, the worst details are glossed over. Your junior high student will get a lot out of this book. We're taking a summer trip to this battlefield; this one goes in the summer homeschool unit.

Sitting Bull and his warriors won the Battle of Little Bighorn (Greasy Grass)... but they were doomed. Custer and Sitting Bull both lost. Great introduction, epilogue, and notes section. There is a really good list of the characters and names in the book - at the back. Very helpful.

The cover illustration makes it seem as though this book will appeal to younger children, but in my opinion, 7th grade is just about the lower limit. Gritty reality.

Should be Required for Children!!
By A Customer
This is an excellent and clear told story of the Battle of Little Big Horn. I read this to my fifth grade son and we both "enjoyed" it. It is a very sad tale told from the perspective of people that were at Greasy Grass. I truly recommend this for ALL teachers that teach our children about westward expansion and ALL parents that want our children to learn the truth and the importance of the truth. It tells the story of Native Americans and the destruction of their life and culture.

A Time To Die...
By Betty Burks
George Armstrong Custer met his fate at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The Indians were there in masse waiting for 'this good day' to kill their enemy. It is neve a good day to die. But we have have to sometimes. Some sooner, some later.

Wilma Mankiller is a former principal chief of the Cherokee Ntion out in Oklahoma; whe has previously written an account of her chiefdom. I thought the lovely Indian woman on the front cover of her, but it is the head chief woman of the Northern Cheyenne, Gail Small. It was Audrey Shenandoah who said, "The main difference between our people and the world around us is the thankfulness and respect for the Earth, our environment, and the natural world. In our way, every day is a good day."

I think we are all thankful to be alive on the earth at this time. Some don't show respect for the natural world, having spent all of their growing up years (and adult, as well) in the inner cities. Al Gore must be part Indian, as am I, because he wrote books about the environment and championed the cause in his campaign for President of the United States.

It is indeed a good day every day we live. A few years ago, I did my first creative writing for an online Senior Newsletter. I did not know that it was edited and mostly supported by the Native Americans until I wrote an article about being part-Indian. My mailman, a Cherokee, was most respectful to me after that; I don't know how he knew about it as he is not a senior. It was fun, but I was used and abused, let down in a big way by this group. Were I not part Cherokee, I might have ended up resenting the way I was deceived by Valerie who'd promised me a free lunch, but not once made herself known to me.

I do much better with the "every day is a good day" on Amazon.com. Who needs those who use others, for whatever reason! They are no wiser than the white folks. My mother's family were from Union County (Irish, I think) and they are more honorable country people than any Native Americans.

I've attended several of their PowWows here in this town and taken photos of the same costumes, year after year, Their dancing is just shuffling feet as they go round and round in a circle. The men preen as the women show their pride, especially the two white women married to the beautiful males of the Indian Nation. My son looks more Indian than the young one from the Cherokee reservation who talked with me about the red-headed, blue-eyed faux Indian at one of the PowWow.

Tensions of Empire: Colonial Cultures in a Bourgeois WorldFrom University of California Press

Starting with the premise that Europe was made by its imperial projects as much as colonial encounters were shaped by events and conflicts in Europe, the contributors to Tensions of Empire investigate metropolitan-colonial relationships from a new perspective. The fifteen essays demonstrate various ways in which "civilizing missions" in both metropolis and colony provided new sites for clarifying a bourgeois order. Focusing on the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries, they show how new definitions of modernity and welfare were developed and how new discourses and practices of inclusion and exclusion were contested and worked out. The contributors argue that colonial studies can no longer be confined to the units of analysis on which it once relied; instead of being the study of "the colonized," it must account for the shifting political terrain on which the very categories of colonized and colonizer have been shaped and patterned at different times.

A Multi-disciplinary Treatment of the Exclusionary "Other"
By Gregory Canellis
In this collection of essays, Frederick Cooper and Ann Laura Stoler have attempted to shed light on an often overlooked aspect of European imperialism; the colonized. Specifically, the authors contend it is that gray area "between the public institutions of the colonial state and the intimate reaches of people's lives that seemed to us to demand more attention." Realizing the diversity of the European colonial experience, the authors wanted to examine whether or not there exists a correlation between the archival histories of the major European imperial powers-Germany, France, Great Britain and the Netherlands. Incorporating what some historians have referred to as "the holy trinity"-gender, race and class-Cooper and Stoler have collected an assemblage of scholarship that takes a look at the indigenous experience, or as the title suggests, tensions that existed within the exclusionary "Other" and their culture of colonization. In keeping with the French Annalist, Marxist tradition of social-economic historiography that had grown popular in the 1960's and 1970's, the essays not only reinforce the evils of capitalistic exploitation, but also incorporate to a large extent, the field of anthropology to the blurred genres of interdisciplinary scholarship. In a sense, the articles read like anthropological field studies in an historical setting. For example, in "Le Bebe en Brousse: European Women, African Birth Spacing, and Colonial Intervention in Breast Feeding in the Belgian Congo" (pp. 287-321), Nancy Rose Hunt, examines the affect colonial institutions had upon a natural birth control method common in many underdeveloped countries, prolonged breast feeding, or birth spacing. Birth spacing and the ethnographic cocoon in which it rests are usually the work of anthropologists not historians. But as we can see from Ms Hunt's argument, the combination of cultural and political studies makes for an interesting blend of social history. In a similar essay titled: "Sexual Affronts and Racial Frontiers: European Identities and the Cultural Politics of Exclusion in Colonial Southeast Asia" (pp.198-237), Ann Stoler examines the problem of colonial and indigenous union-"mixed bloods"-and the affects this relationship between inclusionary impulses and exclusionary practices has on French and Dutch nationalism. Here again, as her subtitle suggests, the blending of culture and politics, usually the stuff of varying floors of a Humanities building, has come together in a compatible marriage. This book might not appeal to those accustomed to the standard fair of colonial history. The editor's long and winded introduction does not fully prepare the reader for the interesting essays that follow. Had the editors added a conclusion tying the confusing section headings together, and concisely formulated their opening, the finished product would have been more easily digestible. Ending on a positive note, the lengthy bibliography at the end of each article provides the reader with ample fodder for further inquiry. Perhaps destined to never fine a home on an undergraduate syllabus, this work is, noneheless, a significant contribution to the interdisciplinary paradigm that has taken hold of the historical profession.

Re-Reading Sappho: Reception and Transmission (Classics and Contemporary Thought)From University of California Press

Re-Reading Sappho reflects the recent fascination with Sappho's "afterlife." The essays examine the changing interpretations of scholars and writers who have read the fragmentary remains of Sappho's poetry. As the contributors explore the ways that each generation creates its own Sappho, the Sapphic tradition itself becomes an index to changing sensibilities and cultural norms about sexuality, gender roles, and notions of fema le authorship.

A legendary literary figure, Sappho has attracted readers, critics, and biographers ever since she composed poems on the island of Lesbos at the close of the seventh century B.C. Bringing together some of the best recent criticism on the subject, this volume, together with Reading Sappho, represents the first anthology of Sappho scholarship, drawing attention to Sappho's importance as a poet and reflecting the diversity of critical approaches in classical and literary scholarship during the last several decades.

From the Inside Flap
"The heart's desire is unfulfilled and distant. My Lover won't give it medicine, and it won't mend its ways. Hotter fires burn in love's battlefield And, Bahu, I'm in awe of those who charge in. With their earthy charm and engaging simplicity, these Punjabi verses convey the immediacy of the spiritual quest as expressed in the popular idiom and imagery of the countryside. A fine choice for courses in Islamic religious studies and spirituality."—John Renard, author of Seven Doors to Islam

"The great Punjabi Sufi poet Sultan Bahu comes alive for English readers in this lucid and accessible translation. Transmitted orally by generations of singers, these powerful verses show how Sufism has actually been communicated."—Carl W. Ernst, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

brilliant stuff!
By Abhishek Singh
Really is a brilliant gem this book; Bahu's style speaks for itself, completely lucid and absolutely no beating around the bush! This man defies our geneartions description of greatness, he transcends it, which is probable given his closeness to God; and God, transcends description, God is "the perfect balance, ever at peace, ever the same, man cals it God, even thogh it is too wondrous to be named, yet holy is its name and holy the tongue that keeps it holy" -Mirdad this is what Bahu seeks to convey, throught he medium of Love, and wonderfully powerful is his love for the lord, has to be read to be beleived. Elias does an excellent job of bringing the urdu meaning of Bahu brillinace across to english readers. A very very satisfying read, a book to be cherished and pased on for generations.

Anatomy of a Beast: Obsession and Myth on the Trail of Bigfoot, by Michæl McLeod

Part history, part road trip, and part biography, this is the true story of a remarkable group of men whose obsession with Bigfoot turned the giant hominid into an American icon. Award-winning journalist Michael McLeod tells of Bigfoot's rise to tabloid stardom in a fast-paced account that begins with his own journey to investigate a famous 1967 film clip of a Bigfoot in a California forest. McLeod proceeds to uncover a trail of clues reaching from the late nineteenth century, when a few ambitious, imaginative naturalists and explorers synthesized historical and indigenous folklore with Darwinian ideas and speculated that a proto-hominid "missing link" might still be alive in remote areas. That speculation would eventually inspire a colorful cast of loggers, hunters, con artists, and businessmen in the twentieth century to create the modern myth of Bigfoot, all of them angling for a piece of a monster that the media and the public still can't get enough of. Told through vividly narrated interviews and anecdotes, Anatomy of a Beast offers a unique perspective on the deep roots of counterfactual thinking—and how obsession and myth are created out of it.

“A funny, well-written memoir about chasing down the believers.” (Scott Bradfield Bookforum 2009-07-31)

From the Inside Flap
"Michael McLeod doesn't simply debunk hoaxes; he critically, but sympathetically, explores the motivations that have driven the 'Bigfoot community' to build an enormous and intricate, if ramshackle, edifice of lore. McLeod has written an anatomy of mythology with implications that go beyond the Bigfoot phenomenon. The Bigfoot mythologists' strange, colorful, and sometimes comical, personalities play a big part of this compulsively readable story."—David Rains Wallace, author of The Klamath Knot: Explorations of Myth and Evolution

"In the same way that dinosaurs and other exotic beasts from Earth's distant and hazy past inspire and fascinate many of us, Bigfoot has captured the imagination of generations of Americans. Here, Michael McLeod approaches the 'Bigfoot phenomenon' in the same way that a detective would follow leads at a crime scene. The result is a delicious case study of human obsession and the fuzzy border between science and pseudoscience."—Chris Beard, author of The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey: Unearthing the Origins of Monkeys, Apes, and Humans

About the Author
Michael McLeod is a writer, producer, and director who has created documentaries for PBS, the PBS series Frontline, the Discovery Channel, and other national venues.

Too cocky to be truly scientifc
By Scott Herriott
If you're interested in a skeptical tome on the subject of Bigfoot, you'd do a lot better with either Daegling's "Bigfoot Exposed" (horrible title...very good book) or Buh's "Bigfoot - the Life and Times of a Legend (good title...good book). McLeod is correct in pointing out a lot of weak pieces of evidence. But to leap from that to making absolute statements such as "But the Bigfoot phenomenon has never been about the truth. It's about storytelling" or (pertaining to the Patterson film) "Afterall, someone was in the suit, and Patterson's clock was ticking" has him coming off as presumptive and arrogant as someone boldly claiming there IS strong evidence for the existence of Bigfoot. One has to wonder if McLeod were around in Africa in the years prior to the discovery of the mountain gorilla, with him hearing anecdotal stories of man-like beings, would he have scoffed at such stories as wishful thinking rubbish? Apparently, he's one of these guys who mistakenly thinks that science is solely involved with defending what has already been verified and pooh-poohing that which hasn't, even though, in the case of the Sasquatch phenomenon, you have literally thousands of people who have claimed to see one. Personally, I believe there IS tons of b.s. and misinterpretation involved in the phenomenon, but to categorically rule out any plausible notion that such beings could exist comes off as someone who needs to review the principles of the scientific method and question his own apparently all-compassing cynical views of human beings ability to relay what they've experienced accurately.
Granted, in this day and age of computer-generated imagery, only a body or a part of one will suffice for verification. But to claim that any further searching is a pure waste of time seems to ignore the fact that prior to proving that both the mountain gorilla and orangutan existed, for hundreds of years, anecdotal tales abounded about their existence. Perhaps this too is the case with Bigfoot.

A gift from a friend
By S. F. Tye
I didn't buy this book but rather was given it as a gift. I have no particular interest in the subject matter and certainly held no prior views on the authenticity of Bigfoot. I read it in front of the 127 other books I currently have purchased but failed to read because it was given to me by a friend. The onus of friendships.

Much to my surprise, I very much enjoyed the book and found it difficult to put down. When I did put it down, it was often to go to the Internet and check out some aspect of the subject matter.

This book is not so much about Big Foot as such, arguably because there may not be any subject matter as a point of fact, but rather is about the actual search for the underlying truth in the stories of Big Foot. It is also about the possible perversion of that search for the truth and why it might have happened. The story about the hunt for Bigfoot actually makes very good reading. Beyond that, however, the author presents a wonderful portrait of the rationales and desires that drove the major participants to act as they did; insights that apply to many situations that may not be so dissimilar to this one.

At the end of the day this is a well written book that can take the reader beyond the specific subject matter at hand into an interesting look at what drives people in situations such as this. Situations where we want to believe, have to believe or simply need others to believe, even all three. While the book clearly discounts the existence of Bigfoot, it certainly had me wanting to believe, not just in the legend but in the people who pursued that legend. At the end of the day, it wasn't so much that I believed in the creature but rather that I believed in the spirit of the legend and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know those who would pursue that legend. I left satisfied but hungry and find myself checking on Bigfoot far more than I would otherwise have done, even if the author had proven its existence beyond a shadow of a doubt; and who would want to do that to such a wonderful legend?

a PBS documentarian looks at bigfoot
By R. Howell
Each year there are inevitably several books released on the subject of bigfoot. This year we start out with Buhs' Bigfoot: The Life and Times of a Legend and this book by McLeod. Both follow similar outlines, rehashing some old stories and then dismissing them because the individual authors deny the existence of such creatures. I really don't care whether they "believe" (I hate the use of that word in this regards) but I do care whether they present an interesting look into the legend, pro or con, and supply me with information that entertains me or causes me to think more. I personally accept the admittedly soft-evidence on the existance of the creatures but will gladly read an opposing viewpoint with an open mind. Both Buhs and McLeod present their takes and overall, I found both books intriguing whether I agreed or not.

McLeod's book is rather back and forth over the subject matter. He denies the existance but then writes an extremely provocative and entrancing descriptive which seemingly accepts them only to turn around and comment that it just isn't true. I grew tired of this in both books. I accept your dispute but don't have to be reminded constantly. Anyway, I actually truly enjoyed this book as McLeod has a powerful way with words, sometimes using overpriced words to seemingly show off his expanse of language. There is no real argument disproving the creatures other than the author just doesn't accept what has been presented, it's his opinion and I respect it. There are some apparent character attacks on the old time "investigators", specifically Roger Patterson and his film. However, his look into the past is much less warped than Greg Long's which is really just an all out attack on Patterson and the film. Again, no evidence is presented showing there was or was not 'a man in a monkey suit' other than the author simply stating it was fake.

Overall, a very easy going and descriptive look into the legends, stories, and history of bigfoot. My final statement: in my opinion, the author seemingly wants to 'believe' in bigfoot creatures as he has had an interest in the phenomenon for decades but the 'intellectual' side of him refuses to allow him accept the creatures. Either way, it's a great book for both sides of the fence and should be in your bigfoot literature collection.
