Sentimental Men: Masculinity and the Politics of Affect in American CultureFrom University of California Press

The essays in this volume analyze a wide variety of cultural forms to demonstrate the centrality of masculine sentiment in American literary and cultural history from the early republic to the progressive era. Challenging the association of sentimentality exclusively with femininity in studies of American culture, the contributors analyze sentimentalism not just as a literary genre but as a structure of feeling manifested in many areas: temperance testimonials, begging letters, historiography, philanthropic performance, photography, portraiture, and poetry. Essays from a variety of disciplines—American studies, literature, history, art, gender studies—deconstruct the alignment of reason, commerce, and the public sphere with men, and feelings, domesticity, and the private sphere with women.

From the Inside Flap
"[Sentimental Men] advances our understanding of American culture with contributions of original and often superior research that come together as an interdisciplinary conversation about sentimentalism and masculinity."—Charles Berryman, author of Decade of Novels

"[Sentimental Men] makes a substantial contribution to the ongoing theoretical, historical, and critical project of reassessing sentimental discourse. Like the best of the recent work in this field, this anthology of essays does not merely celebrate what had formerly been execrated by professional readers, but it undertakes to understand the reasons behind celebration and execration alike. More centrally, it endeavors to reveal the 'cultural work' that sentimentalism does, and continues to do, in the overlapping spheres of art and culture."—Katherine Snyder, University of California, Berkeley

Sentimental tedium
By zunirah
It's written in the worst academic style )and i say this as an academic) -- replete with dense, turgid prose and pretentious theorizing. The topic itself is interesting, but the approach makes what could be exciting and engaging extremely tedious.

An outstanding and challenging collection
By A Customer
This collection explores the intersections of masculinity and sentiment in American culture and literature. While sentimentality may now be associated with the feminine, it originates in the traditionally masculine cult of sentiment, or sensibility, with the late eighteenth-century emergence of the 'man of feeling' exemplified by male writers such as Laurence Sterne. The transition of sentimentality from masculine ideal to feminine disadvantage is deceptively complex and requires cross-disciplinary discussion. Mary Chapman and Glenn Hendler have opened just such a dialogue in gathering papers addressing a wide range of media, including literature, political writings, art and history: this volume offers a considered and balanced representation of cultural expression. The collection showcases innovative directions in gender and American studies by literary and cultural critics, and is an excellent resource for readers interested in the concept of sentimentality. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in American culture generally, or more specifically in constructions of gender in late nineteenth-century and early modern America.

Forced Baptisms: Histories of Jews, Christians, and Converts in Papal Rome, by Marina Caffiero

This book makes use of newly available archival sources to reexamine the Roman Catholic Church’s policy, from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, of coercing the Jews of Rome into converting to Christianity. Marina Caffiero, one of the first historians permitted access to important archives, sets individual stories of denunciation, betrayal, pleading, and conflict into historical context to highlight the Church’s actions and the Jewish response. Caffiero documents the regularity with which Jews were abducted from the Roman ghetto and pressured to accept baptism. She analyzes why some Jewish men, interested in gaining a business advantage, were more inclined to accept conversion than the women. The book exposes the complexity of relations between the papacy and the Jews, revealing the Church not as a monolithic entity, but as a network of competing institutions, and affirming the Roman Jews as active agents of resistance.

A Life Uncorked, by Hugh Johnson

Hugh Johnson, the preeminent wine writer of our time, now brings to his fans around the world his first major new book in a decade: this stylish, intimate, and delightfully opinionated autobiographical tour through the world of wine. A Life Uncorked weaves Johnson’s wide-ranging ruminations, memories, and observations on his remarkable life together with information on every aspect of wine—from its technical production to its cultural significance. In luminous, utterly engaging prose, he taps into his enormous experience to consider topics such as tasting, cellaring, choosing, understanding, comparing, and buying wine, as well as wine’s more ephemeral and personal pleasures, lures, and mysteries.

At the heart of A Life Uncorked is the idea that wine is more than a drink; its characteristics link it directly to memory, to locations around the world where grapes are grown and wine is made, and to the dining rooms, restaurants, bars, and gardens where we consume it. Johnson takes us to all of these places and many more in this delightful and revelatory memoir. Peppered with anecdotes throughout, A Life Uncorked simultaneously educates and entertains with its absorbing perspective on the complex and fascinating world of wine from one of its most well-known and well-liked aficionados.

From Publishers Weekly
Writing about wine is only one of British author Johnson's (The World Atlas of Wine) many incursions into the high life, as he recounts in this impressive 40-year journey. World travel, gardening, glassmaking and grape growing (at his own vineyard in Bourbonnais, France) have alternately warranted his attention since he began his career as a journalist in 1960 as British Vogue's first wine writer. Under the tutelage of legends André Simon and Elizabeth David, the young editor came of age, and he tracks his career milestones in terms of notable vintages, e.g., 1975 was a great year for Bordeaux, and the year he began his monthly column as pseudonymous Tradescant in the British journal The Garden; 1982 was the year of "marvelous clarets," and when Johnson helped launch Cuisine magazine as its wine editor. Convinced that great wine and glassware evolved together (in the 17th century), Johnson was even a purveyor of glass and silver for wine drinkers from his shop in London. His memoir proceeds following broad categories of wine—bubbly, white, red and sweet—each chapter replete with memories of remarkable trips, vintages, vineyards and people. Johnson opens his notebooks and the oenophile's lifetime experience richly spills forth. (Mar.)

A corking good read!
By Joshua E. London
I recently published a brief review of this wonderful book in the print edition of The Washington Examiner newspaper ([...] -- April 29 & 30th Weekend Edition). Here is that review:

Recently, I had the opportunity to catch up with world-renowned wine writer Hugh Johnson as he breezed through town promoting his new memoir on the inner workings of the wine world, A Life Uncorked. This is a deeply personal book. Yet, as Johnson admits, it is not an autobiography. Rather, this memoir is a personal journey, as much about wine as it is about his life.

For Johnson, wine is essentially "a social game" not merely an interest or a hobby. Wine is "about human relations, hospitality, bonding-all the maneuvers of social life-and all under the influence, however benign, of alcohol." Who can argue with that?

This social experience is richly transformative: "However good a wine may be, sentiment can make it better" and "with the right companion, a single wine can be a continuing conversation." In person, as in his writings, Johnson comes off as witty, personable, and charming, and his approach to wine is wonderfully infectious.

Never one to shy from a fight, Johnson (a Brit) takes issue with Robert Parker, the preeminent American wine critic. Johnson criticizes Parker's wine scoring system, which treats wines "like American high school students"-50 points just for showing up, 60 = dreadful, 70 = pretty poor, 80 = not bad, etc. Johnson decries the effect this approach has had on the wine industry, where wines are Parkerized to get higher scores.

Ultimately, Johnson's unpretentious and highly enjoyable attitude towards wine appreciation is compelling. As he plainly explains, "It depends on whether you see wine primarily as a drink or as a recreational substance. In a drink you look for something refreshing and satisfying without too loud a voice, not too intrusive on your food or your thoughts each time you take a sip." So take a page from Hugh's book, and enjoy a jolly good read with glass in hand.

The Ideal Wine Mentor
By Flippy
This book is meant to be savored. It is all things wine and the appreciation of wine. Johnson's actual presence, his life's tale wanders in and out of the narrative. We learn about his schooling, his early university days, about his wife, his early work and publications but that's just part of the beauty of reading this book.

Imagine if you had a friend who not only spoke eloquently but who could talk at great lengths about a subject he held dear to his heart. Imagine this friend to be well-traveled, with many connections and stories to tell. Hugh Johnson might be that ideal friend. He doesn't talk down to the reader, he doesn't namedrop the way some wine writers do, glorifying personalities in the wine trade. Johnson is certainly living a comfortable life but his presentation of facts, experiences and meetings with great wine and great winemakers is lively and surprisingly modest.

The book is divided into several sections: Prospects, Bubbly, White, Red and Sweet. Throughout these sections he explores past episodes of his life, the people he met and the wines he encountered. His style is direct, light, poetic and friendly, an approach in prose that both informs and involves the reader. You never feel like you're being lectured to, mostly that he is here to mentor, to share and express his love of the great fermented grapes of the world.

I would recommend this book to all kinds of readers, especially the wine lovers. If you're starting out or know the difference between a Pouilly-Fusse and Pouilly-Fume, then read this. For wine writing, this work is a treasure. I wish there were more writers like Johnson working in the industry.

An engaging wine story
By GTLAmerica
As the title suggests, this tome is as much a combination of anecdotes as it is a tour around some of the world's greatest wine appellations. Drawing on his decades of wine writing experience, author Hugh Johnson manages to bring the reader into his world. Imagine your sexagenarian uncle reclining into his armchair with a glass of red wine: he sniffs; he drinks and satisfyingly says "ahh", then starts telling you all the experiences in his life that led him to the point of enjoying this wine right now, and what you should know about it if you are to be included in his will.

The book's almost 400 pages are ordered like a tasting: bubbly, white, red, sweet. Johnson sets the stage with a question about wine, then answers it: "What does the reasonable, perfectly balanced person need to know? That wine is not one thing, but many. To appreciate it you don't have to swallow an encyclopedia, but you do have to pay attention. A good memory helps, but a clear focus on what you are drinking is indispensable". Then he follows up with another (unanswered) question: "If it turns a drink into a recreation, who can complain?" Indeed, he poses a lot of questions throughout the book in an effort to draw the reader in and make him think. Why drink inter-state? Why does this drink have bubbles? Are Burgundians all neurotics? Would Chablis be asked for everywhere if it were called Pernand-Vergelesses?

The structure of the book bequeaths on each chapter its own world tour. Bubbly (he co-names the chapter "the social drug") obviously begins in the Champagne district in northern France before moving into California. He begins the White chapter in Australia, blitzes through a tasting date in Japan and plunges into the German Rheingau. That said, there is a heavy focus on France which is not surprising given he's an Englishman born at the time when the only decent wine available was more than likely French. Chablis, Bordeaux, the Loire and Burgundy all have their embellished chapters, while Italy, Spain and the New World come up in secondary chapters under subheadings or chapter titles like "the Bordeaux persuasion".

He has a soft spot for Australia. This, I imagine, is one of few wine memoirs that donates more pages to Australia than to Spain and Italy combined! Having lunch in Margaret River, he opines that it could be the Medoc and Graves of Australia. But there are still "infinite possibilities" for experimentation in both location and wine making style. On Aussie Chardonnay, which he notes was not even grown in the country until the 1960s, he claims to find no pattern across the regions other than "succulence in restraint, fruit that is sweet but not sugary, acidity that starts your saliva, and a touch of smoke to make you sniff again". Though he does decry the direction of bulk wines, remarking that Australia has become "caught up in the conflict between conglomerates for supermarket space" and prophets "who see the future as applying taste to terroir as the French have done".

I found the most enjoyable section to be his experience with his own hobby vineyard in France, which is the prism through which he explains the wine making process. The setting is old stone barn in Bourbonnais. The aim: plant and harvest 750 Chardonnay and 1,000 Sauvignon Gris vines across 175 acres. The enemy? The weather plus a small herd of destructive rabbits. After the picking, crushing and pressing, it comes time to add the sulfur in order stop oxidation. Johnson buys the sulfur "in a plastic jerry-can in a concentration that demands head-spinning calculations to achieve the recommended dose. No one is watching: I use a modest splash". It is anecdotes like these that breathe a little humor into wine writing, poking fun the science at the same time as recognizing the painstaking effort that it takes to achieve mastery.

By the time one reaches the end of the book, it seems there is practically nothing Hugh Johnson hasn't done. He has almost capsized in an unseaworthy vessel trying to do a "claret run" through the Bay of Biscay; created a haiku content for fifty Japanese geishas trying to learn wine; sat on the board of Chateau Latour only to be "fired for non-attendance"...the list goes on. Perhaps that is the vaunted life of the international wine aficionado. At the same time, avid descriptions of the settings in which he has experienced wine do the trick of bringing each bottle to life. When each individual and each wine meet, it is that context which makes interesting reading. "You can, of course, like a college examiner, submit every sample to the same critical appraisal and accept or reject it", he writes - a jab at Robert Parker. "Or you can embrace the identity, enjoy the circumstances, be transported to other times".

It is interesting to note how much Japan figured into his wine ventures - in the late 20th century the country's rich elites seemed to be yearning for a greater understanding of wine, whether to look good or make the right investments as much as it was for enjoyment probably. There are parallels to China today, whose colossal focus on Bordeaux (it beats the UK and Germany as the leading export market by value for Bordeaux wines) has become a welcome financial beacon for the elite French chateaux. I guess it will be for the current generation's global wine expert, who today probably visits Beijing and Shanghai more than annually, to write the China chapter as it unfolds. In the mean time, you can be satisfied with Hugh Johnson's memoir of experiences that traverses some major wine trends of the second half of the twentieth century. The Power of the Center: A Study of Composition in the Visual Arts, by Rudolf Arnheim

Rudolf Arnheim has been known, since the publication of his groundbreaking Art and Visual Perception in 1974, as an authority on the psychological interpretation of the visual arts. Two anniversary volumes celebrate the landmark anniversaries of his works in 2009. In The Power of the Center, Arnheim uses a wealth of examples to consider the factors that determine the overall organization of visual form in works of painting, sculpture, and architecture. The Dynamics of Architectural Form explores the unexpected perceptual consequences of architecture with Arnheim's customary clarity and precision.

The Power of the Center: A Study of Composition in the visua
By passtime seeker
This book offers an in-depth analysis of the visual dynamics in a piece of art according to the sizes, positions, orientations and the balancing centers of its components. Paintings, sculptures and architectures are the subjects of discussions in the book. In addition to the balance between the components of a piece of art, the shape of a picture frame, the environment, the perspective prescribed by the artist and the viewer all play an important role in the interpretation of a piece art. The author takes an step-by-step approach to explain how the understanding of the roles of all these elements would help us to appreciate a piece of art. Many examples, modern and classical, are provided to demonstrate his points. I find his approach to understanding a piece of art interesting and revealing. This is one of the best books I ever read about arts. I think this book would benefit aspiring artists and art enthusiasts alike. I would hane given it five stars instead of four and a half if the pictures in the book were in color.

Yes!

I've been looking for a book like this for years! As a photographer, I know what I like but I can't always say why I (or others) like it--in other words, what makes a "good" image. Arnheim helps by examining with extraordinary sensitivity the psychology and even physiology of visual perception.

Yes, it's complicated, and if you are not on the same wavelength as the author it may seem obtuse (perhaps even willfully so). But if your thinking is congruent with his, if you have been puzzling over how people examine images, how their eyes move about an image and absorb and appreciate it, then Arnheim's analysis is nothing short of brilliant and revelatory. I find myself saying "Yes! Yes! Yes!" as I read.

There is more here than I need--much more. I don't feel that I need to master everything he writes in order to fulfill my need to understand visual perception so as to improve my photography. But I celebrate the day I discovered this book, and I congratulate the author on such a perceptive, clearly--even engagingly--written work.

One Working-Artists' Essential Read
By Visual Medicine
Professor Rudolph Arnheim passed-on in 2007-- too-early. His words have long been on my very short shelf of those convincing writers on the Experience of art, and is at the zenith of those few who can actually teach Learning To See (at distance).

This title concentrates on elements that, while eventually intuited by working artists, are here spelled-out so clearly that I caught myself sighing-and-startling several times. Could I be more emphatic, short of drooling?

It begs to be written-into, including lines onto the (simple) diagrams, so I am today purchasing a clean copy for my daughter (who accepted my pushing it into her hands only a month ago). I had passed it along too-soon.

Professor Arnheim has, in this one among many fine volumes, produced one of the finest books of the past century for art AND artists. Rare, indeed, given that it is never pompous and contains not a single color picture. Nearly impossible to cram more experience into such a small work; AND to discover that simple words can still provoke new meaning in my daily decisions in making images. His writing style is that of the helpful, kind (insider) friend to (the novice as well as the elite). He is to the point, softly-- minus the terse collegial congratulations often evident in academic art writings.

I am grateful for his contributions to my education and Life of the Mind. Had we ever met, I would have shook his hand too hard; new thoughts from his pen will be missed.

The Feminine Sublime: Gender and Excess in Women's Fiction, by Barbara Claire Freeman

The Feminine Sublime provides a new and startling insight into the modes and devices employed in the creation of women's fiction since the eighteenth century. Barbara Claire Freeman argues that traditional theorizations of the sublime depend upon unexamined assumptions about femininity and sexual difference, and that the sublime could not exist without misogynistic constructions of "the feminine." Taking this as her starting point, Freeman suggests that the "other sublime" that comes into view from this new perspective not only offers a crucial way to approach representations of excess in women's fiction, but allows us to envision other modes of writing the sublime.

Freeman reconsiders Longinus, Burke, Kant, Weiskel, Hertz, and Derrida while also engaging a wide range of women's fiction, including novels by Chopin, Morrison, Rhys, Shelley, and Wharton. Addressing the coincident rise of the novel and concept of the sublime in eighteenth-century European culture, Freeman allies the articulation of sublime experience with questions of agency and passion in modern and contemporary women's fiction. Arguments that have seemed merely to explain the sublime also functioned to evaluate, domesticate, and ultimately exclude an otherness that is almost always gendered as feminine. Freeman explores the ways in which fiction by American and British women, mainly of the twentieth century, responds to and redefines what the tradition has called "the sublime."

From the Inside Flap
"Freeman has subtly analyzed the gendered drama implicit in several classic theories of the sublime written by men, and then brilliantly paired each theoretical text with a novel written by a woman, a novel in which that theory, and that gendered drama, is enacted, exceeded, and critiqued. This is feminist literary theory at its best."—Barbara E. Johnson, author of The Wake of Deconstruction

"An outstanding book. . . . Freeman's work is the first to link [the theme of empowerment] to the literary critique of the sublime, making possible the 'addition' of women to the list of English and American Romantic writers where they have been puzzlingly invisible."—Diane W. Middlebrook, author of Anne Sexton

"Barbara Claire Freeman radically unmans the discourse of the sublime. She makes explicit the gendered, gendering, and degendered aspects of the traditional discussions of sublimity. The results of her inversive readings are exhilarating—new readings of texts that had been threatened by banalization from simplistic ideological misuse. A brilliant work!"—Hayden White, author of The Content of the Form

The "one China" policy officially supported by the People's Republic of China, the United States, and other countries asserts that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it. The debate over whether the people of Taiwan are Chinese or independently Taiwanese is, Melissa J. Brown argues, a matter of identity: Han ethnic identity, Chinese national identity, and the relationship of both of these to the new Taiwanese identity forged in the 1990s. In a unique comparison of ethnographic and historical case studies drawn from both Taiwan and China, Brown's book shows how identity is shaped by social experience—not culture and ancestry, as is commonly claimed in political rhetoric.

If identity has profoundly and rapidly changed in Taiwan over the past fifteen years, as she persuasively argues, extraordinary skill, patience, and luck will be needed on both sides if a mutually acceptable political settlement is ever to become a reality."—Ramon H. A Fundamentally Sound Work, in Need of Focus
By Thomas Patterson
Although Melissa J. Brown completed Is Taiwan Chinese? over 10 years ago, her study still contains much value for readers of today. In her work, Brown investigates the discrepancies between cultural identities in Taiwan and China, and the "narratives of unfolding" that the PRC regime, on one hand, and Taiwan's media culture on the other use to explain local identities. Brown indicates that, in her work, the term "narratives of unfolding" refers to constructed ideologies that are seen as the product of a person's culture or ancestry and that leave little room for individual choice about belonging or departing.

Brown pokes holes in these narratives of unfolding, mainly through analyses of "the impact of culture, power, and migration on changing identities" -- the sub-title of her book. She focuses her study on the effects of Han immigration and intermarriage with locals on Aboriginal culture in Taiwan and vice versa. She adds complexity to her study by considering similar identity changes among the Tujia ethnic minority of China.

Brown's analysis of this subject is quite complete and impressively detailed. She shows that the Taiwanese Hoklo of today, while retaining a Han ethnicity, can be considered different from Han in China. Meanwhile, by demonstrating, through the Tujia example, that the CCP-ruled China has accepted the possibilities of both Sinicization and de-Sinicicization within the PRC, she insightfully highlights the problems with the CCP's own narrative of unfolding, which posits that Taiwan's Han residents are incontrovertibly part of China and have been so since antiquity.

This is not to say that Is Taiwan Chinese? is not without its share of faults. Readers who expect these faults before picking up the book will be better armed to look past them and see the validity of Brown's message, which she enunciates, in clearest form, in the final chapter of the book.

Perhaps the most unfortunate aspect of this study is the degree to which Taiwanese national identity seems to be placed on the back burner in regards to the ethnic identity of Taiwanese Hoklos. Readers who have completed the book will understand that Brown's focus on the Hoklo/Aborigines and the Tujia/Han is a study of the mechanics of identity change, and that knowledge of these mechanics is useful for understanding the solidifying national identity of Taiwanese based on shared experiences, particularly those of the 20th century.

Those who are familiar with Taiwan will know that Taiwan is a patchwork of "ethnicities" - Plains Aborigine, Mountain Aborigine, Hoklo, Hakka, and "Mainlander (post-1949, pan-China nationalist immigrants)" - and regime influences - Zheng, Qing, Japanese, KMT, American and PRC (the latter two by external effect on Taiwanese society rather than by direct administration). The shared experiences of all of these ethnicities over time is the foundation for a Taiwanese national identity that continues to strengthen in the second decade of the 21st century.

Naturally, the ethnic Hoklo-Plains Aborigine melting pot experience is a part of this national identity. However, those seeking a more detailed study of the question of whether "Taiwan is Chinese" may be slightly dismayed to know that almost all of Brown's research is focused on ethnic changes among Hoklos and Aborigines that occur before the 1930s. Other changes to customs in Taiwan, among other ethnic groups (such as Mountain Aborigines and Hoklos), or effects on the shared experiences of Taiwanese as a whole in the political sphere, receive very little treatment.

Brown certainly understands the importance of a more global view of Taiwanese identity. She specifically notes the enormous role of sociopolitical influences in solidifying Taiwanese identity in the 1990s. However, Brown's analysis of the experiences of Taiwanese in the 20th century - the time in which Taiwanese would have most clearly formed their identities based on shared experiences - is limited to the last 30 pages of a 250-page book.

This is unfortunate because the main title of the book, Is Taiwan Chinese?, is constructed on the basis of a national identity (Chinese) and not an ethnic one (Hoklo/Han, Aborigine, etc). Therefore, one might say that the title and subtitle should be reversed: "The impact of culture, power and migration on changing identities in Taiwan: Implications for the resolution of the "Taiwan Question".

Such a title would be quite a mouthful and would lack the punchy effect of Is Taiwan Chinese?. However, it would better cue the reader in to the nature of this important study. Brown's study is clearly applicable to Hoklos, Aborigines and Tujia. Other important influences on Taiwanese national identity, while important to the way she frames the book, are not major elements of her work. Readers seeking more information about the effects of Japanese/KMT policies (aside from the Japanese footbinding ban) on the Taiwanese identity would do best to look elsewhere.
Other problems within Is Taiwan Chinese? are not as difficult to navigate for a patient reader. For example, the language that Brown uses is a bit too academic at times. This affects the accessibility of the material. Of course, this is partly understandable in light of the fact that the book was written as a doctoral dissertation. The original audience was academic. This will not make the average reader's job any easier. Brown also tends to repeat herself frequently. This too affects readability.

Finally, the opening paragraph of the book and the first sentence of the back cover contain a large and easily identifiable error. Brown says in the opening passage, "The "one China" policy, officially supported by the PRC, the US, and many other countries, and formerly supported by Taiwan, asserts that there is only one China and that Taiwan is a part of it." This sentence contains a major factual error.

Brown cites a work by Windberg Chai entitled Relations Between the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan to back up this assertion. I have not read Chai's work. However, if this is what Chai said, he is certainly in the wrong. According to the text of the 1972 Shanghai Communique, the text of which Chai would have had to use to come to his conclusions, the US "acknowledged" that both Beijing and Taipei believe that there is only one China. The language was made firmer in the 1979 Joint Communique, in which the US "acknowledged" the Chinese position that Taiwan was a part of China. The use of "acknowledge", as opposed to "accepted" was intentional. The United States has never "accepted" that Taiwan is a part of China. Brown overlooks the fact that Beijing, Taipei, Washington, and Tokyo all follow their own versions of "a" one China policy. There is no one universally accepted version of the one China policy.

Why is this important to the validity of Brown's work? Because this easily verifiable point is the point of departure for her entire book. The Taiwan policies of the respective countries have governed each country's treatment of Taiwan over the last few decades. This treatment has influenced the sociopolitical experience that has been so important in creating a Taiwanese national identity.

If Brown isn't aware that she has used such an obvious mistake as the springboard of her book, then a critical reader can be forgiven for questioning any of the other claims she makes in her book. In a few words, she undermines her authority to comment on such a delicate political situation.

Despite holding this reservation, after concluding Is Taiwan Chinese?, I believe that Brown does, at least, understand the material that is based on her own anthropological studies. After all, she is not a Taiwan policy maker, and her work has been accepted and praised by her peers. She has done an enormous amount of research, and done it well. Therefore, this book can be of value to those who wish to better understand the effects of culture, power, and migration on changing identities among the Hoklo and Aborigines of Taiwan. With a clearer focus and more streamlined language, this book would be a pleasure to read.

If - like me - you are interested in the title's answer, Ms.Brown's is the book! Quoting some of her words: " Many events are completely unknown to us, many events are known only through extremely biased perspectives, and many events are so contradictorily reported that is difficult to reconstruct even a chronological sequence of what occurred". And - believe me! - Ms. Brown interviewed people - in Taiwan ( living there) and interviewed people - in China !!! We are talking about an Stanford University Professor. Congratulations and thanks to Amazon .

Review of Is Taiwanese Chinese, by Melissa J Brown
By John R.
Given the increasingly expansive policies of the People's Republic of China in SE Asia, an understanding of the situation of the people
of Taiwan is absolutely necessary, and Professor Brown's book gives valuable insights into this situation by analyzing the history and development of the Taiwanese people's feelings of a separate identity over the last several hundred years on the island of Formosa,
as well as their fifty years of occupation (1895-1945) under Japanese rule, and more importantly in recent years as Taiwan has evolved
into a more democratic country. Highly recommended.

Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life, by Gregg Michael Levoy

"Stunning! Wonderful! Levoy writes like a poet. His material is both spiritual and practical. I don't know another book that deals with callings in quite the same way."
--Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words and Prayer Is Good Medicine

How do we know if we're following our true callings? How do we sharpen our senses to cut through the distractions of everyday reality and hear the calls that are beckoning us?

Callings is a passionate look at the search for authenticity. In a style that is poetic, exuberant, and keenly insightful, Gregg Levoy breathes contemporary life into the ancient topic of callings. He presents an illuminating and ultimately practical inquiry into how we listen and respond to our calls, whether at work or at home, in our relationships or in service.

Callings is the first book to examine the many kinds of calls we receive, and the great variety of channels through which they come to us. A calling may be to do something (change careers, go back to school, leave or start a relationship, move to the country, have a child) or to be something (more creative, less judgmental, more loving). You may be called toward or away from something, called to change or renew your commitment to something, or called to return to a place or pursuit in an entirely new way. You may be called toward whatever you have dared and double-dared yourself to do for as long as you can remember.

Gregg Levoy draws on the hard-won wisdom and powerful stories of people who have followed their own calls, to show us the many ways to translate a calling into action. While honoring a calling's essential mystery, the book also guides readers to ask and answer the fundamental questions that arise from any calling: How do we recognize it? How do we distinguish the true calls from the siren song? How do we handle our resistance to a call? What happens when we say no? What happens when we say yes?

Whether your interest in callings is personal or professional, and whether the calls you hear are great trumpetings or the more common daily summonses to pay attention to your intuition, you will find this beautiful book an inspiration. It is a compassionate guide to discovering your own callings and negotiating the tight passages to personal power and authenticity.

Amazon.com Review
The lure of true calling is as powerful as it is exacting and Gregg Levoy's Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life plays upon this common yearning. Indeed, many recognize that there floats somewhere out there "... a call to each of us to materialize ourselves." And everyone can make his or her life "come true," attests Levoy, whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Washington Post, and Psychology Today, if one can learn to read the signs that point one toward one's calling.

But how do we attune--clear a path through ingrained skepticism, negative conditioning, and fear so that we can hear the call? This is the question fundamental to spiritual questing. Receptivity is the first step in the art of sign reading, discerning the calls that point life choices toward meaningful action. Levoy's tools include dream interpretation, relating physical symptoms to their metaphysical correspondences (i.e. the recurring pain in the neck), and recognizing serendipitous events. Learn to discern, Levoy instructs, distinguishing, for example, between true inner guidance and the babble in our heads. And don't expect a big "call," flashing chariots and burning bushes. Rather, Levoy will help the reader cultivate a sensitivity to the still, small voice within.

Since it's inspiration through old truths and classic adages, the success of the message depends, naturally, on a kind of practical clarity. At times frustrating, Callings entices the reader toward self-transformation with New Age rhetoric and examples not always applicable to our more ordinary plights. Quoting the impassioned Annie Dillard may be swell ("The thing is to stalk your calling in a certain skilled and supple way, to locate the most tender and live spot and plug into the pulse"), but--in the long run--metaphor is metaphor and how-to, though less stately and exalted, is the practical precursor to action. Readers familiar with the literature of self-actualization will want to skim the lengthy introduction with its fervent and redundant references to our spiritual spin doctors--Sufi poets Kabir and Rumi; Joseph Campbell; Kierkegaard. But like many deft cartographers of the subterranean terrain, Levoy's mixed bag of metaphor, anecdote, and myth ultimately inspires and encourages the hungry soul to define itself in relation to the divine. For those who can afford to ask these "quality-of- life" questions, Callings offers heartfelt crazy wisdom. Above all else, it's sound nutrient in our spiritually hollow time.

From Library Journal
If life is truly a process and not a destination, the possibility of actually trying a few of the alternate routes that occasionally beckon becomes real. In this inspiring book, Levoy, formerly a columnist for the Cincinnati Inquirer, shares the personal journeys of an assortment of people who were willing to take risks to find their authentic selves, unsure whether they would achieve self-actualization or enrichment. The author followed his own calling and is now a freelance writer and lecturer and teaches journalism. Elevated far above the category of self-help by Levoy's masterly writing, this book reads more like a philosophical guide for those who dare to examine their dreams and take action to explore them. He includes an extensive bibliography and instructions on contacting the people who shared their personal stories for a "continued" dialog. Recommended, especially for those readers who've experienced enough of life to wonder if it was meant to include authenticity and joy.?Catherine T. Charvat, John Marshall Lib., Alexandria, Va.

Beautifully written
By Claude Fletcher
Mr. Levoy's book is a work of art. His writing is sheer poetry and his command of language outstanding. The substance of the book itself, was to me a practical guideline of how to live one's life to the fullest, after being absolutely sure that the chosen path is the most beneficial, all things considered. There are times when I wished I had read this book before I followed what I was sure at the time was my calling. However I console myself with the thought that when the student is ready, the teacher appears.

Listening for a call...
By FrKurt Messick
Hearing a call is a very difficult discernment process. Sometimes the call is clear, but the path is not. Sometimes the path is clear, but the desire is not. Gregg Levoy has done an exceptional job at being an in-print spiritual director for those seeking an entrance into the process of finding a true calling and a more authentic life.
I recently met Levoy, and heard him speak on the topic of vocation and discerning a calling at the college adjoining my seminary. His manner of public speaking is very much in concert with his style of writing -- vibrant, interesting, engaging, and honest.
What is right for me? and Where am I willing to be led? are the two essential questions -- Discernment requires that we ask these two questions continually and devotedly.
As Levoy says, 'people won't pursue their callings until the fear of doing so is finally exceeded by the pain of not doing so.' I have found this to be very true. It took a very long time to discern my call to the priesthood, and yet more time to decide that it is something I must do at all costs (and the costs have been heavy). Yet, I cannot imagine myself doing anything differently and being in any way fulfilled.
'The truest calls seem not only to keep coming back but also to make their way to us through many channels.'
Levoy integrates so much material here, from spiritual masters and the scriptural traditions of many religious faiths to modern psychology and artistic/cultural experts.
Perhaps the greatest chapter for me was that on 'Finding Clarity', in which Levoy says that 'there is such a thing as thinking too much about a calling.' As Emerson said, sometimes it is best to let the bird sing without trying to decipher the song. 'A calling is ultimately mysterious, and the process of discernment is always a bit of a guessing game.'
Levoy's guidance, in cooperation with others in my community, helped me to see a change of mindset, a change of events, a change of personalities were all converging to tell me something that I had closed my mind to, or, more accurately, had closed my heart to. So, I began to pray, even if only subconsciously, and the path began to materialise before my eyes. 'When I pray, coincidences start to happen. When I don't pray, they don't happen.' - William Temple
It also taught me that I couldn't wait for 'someday' -- how we spend our days is how we spend our lives, according to the apt observation of Annie Dillard.
And finally, it made me face what it was to keep saying no. There is a cost, and eventually God will get you anyway -- Jonah (remember Jonah and the great fish?) said no, but eventually had follow his call anyway. I learned that one source of my fear: 'One of the frightening prospects of saying yes to a calling is that you may find out who really supports you and who doesn't.'
Figuring out how to bring my call into being was the final task, and Levoy provided wisdom here as well. 'You cannot cross a chasm in two small jumps', he quoted Lloyd-George as saying; I was forced to create a response to my call, one that did not exist before.
Thus, not too long after discovering this book, I became Father Kurt, and I owe much to this book for that. But please, don't assume that it will tempt or trap you into a ministerial role--it is an excellent guide for discernment, and discernment is one of the most personal tasks for any human being. Prepare to be enlightened.

As much as I liked it, I was left wanting more
By Beth Kujawski
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Levoy last year at the Whole Life Expo in Chicago. He was hosting a lecture, unfortunately opposite James Redfield (author of "The Celestine Prophecy.") I was wooed by the bigger name. Later, as a crowd gathered around Redfield at a book signing, I found myself standing in front of Levoy. I told him that I had wanted to come to his lecture, that it was unfortunate that he was scheduled opposite Redfield. He looked almost annoyed when he said, "Yeah. I know." I bought his book. He signed it. And I just finished it, 9 months later. I was impressed by his style: surprisingly lyrical. What I was anticipating was a book that would help me find the path, to determine where it is I should be heading. This is not a workbook, though one writing exercise does spring to mind. Still, it DID manage to spur on a great amount of thought. This copy is heavily highlighted and underlined, with hasty notes crammed into the margins. Levoy will not tell you where you should be heading. He respects us enough to know that only we possess that knowledge. But he does tweak the landscape, leaving us asking questions about ourselves that may just be the nudge we were looking for.
