In her second solo effort, Rosso, of Silver Palate fame (e.g., The Silver Palate Cookbook, LJ 6/15/82), offers what she calls "a primer" for healthier cooking and eating, with a month of menus and lots of nutrition information, charts, sidebars on ingredients, tricks for reducing calories and fat, and more. Recipes are of the upscale type that attracted so many fans to the earlier books. It seems odd, however, that the three-meals-a-day menus don't acknowledge the working world; it would have been helpful to have had lunch recipes and suggestions for food that can be made ahead and carried rather than so many recipes for food that must be served "immediately." And while Rosso talks about reducing sodium, a number of the daily totals are substantially higher than the recommended amount. Nevertheless, her stylish but low-fat recipes, in an appealing if cluttered information- and tip-packed format, guarantee a wide audience. (Although many in the food world complained that the recipes in Rosso's last book, Great Good Food, Crown 1994, were inadequately tested, it went on to sell more than 400,000 copies.)

The best healthy-eating book I have!

...While it's true that the recipes are organized by menu, it is not so difficult to pick and choose your way through the book to create alternative meals that suit your style.
What I can say about this book is that the recipes ROCK. My loving partner has a family history of heart-disease. We are both failed vegetarians who fell off the wagon because we LIKE meat. Neither of us are interested in going back to eating TVP and soy. What we do want is a book that will help us eat sensibly, reduce the risks of dropping dead from poor eating habits, and still allow us to eat food we like.
Recipe after recipe in my book has been marked Very Good! or Excellent! beside it. The Turkey Paillard Piccata and Brown Rice with Asparagus and Almonds is delicious, the Country-Roasted Chicken with Green Beans and Potatoes is savory and pleasing, the Roasted Chicken with Fresh Figs and Kalamata Olives is out of this world, and the Individual Eggplant Towers have become a family favorite.

Low-fat, Day by Day Menus of Great Food

Rosso has turned out lots of great cookbooks, but this one is for us who want or need every now and then to cut back and eat more sensibly.
The great thing is that this doesn't have to be boring,uninteresting food. Her zest and skills in putting together healthy food with attractive and luscious fare is evident in this collection. For example, one dinner entree I love is: Herbed brushetta, Broiled Honey Salmon, Hobo Potatoes, Asparagus Spears with Parmeasan Shards, Green Beans and Peaches in Wine.
Having tried this more than once, it's good, you'll lose pounds and smile all the while you're tasting this great food. All the nutritional analysis is there as well as great sections on smoothies and treats/snacks, etc.

Quick, Delicious Recipies

I completely disagree with the negative review given to this book. These are very simple and great tasting recipes for everyday cooking. I live in an area where exotic ingrediants are hard to come by and I have no problem finding everything for these dishes. Julee Rosso really knows how to bring out the best in food with little prep and few ingrediants. As far as "tinkering with the recipes" i guess it's all a matter of taste and all cooks automatically change recipies to suit their style (spicy, sweet, salty). I have many cookbooks and experiment often and i agree with the other reviewers that this IS one of my most used cookbooks. BRAVO!

He also focuses on the history of Olympia Press, founded by Maurice Girodias, who with the assistance of Glasgow writer Alexander Trocchi published Lolita, The Story of O and other controversial books. Campbell successfully evokes the flavor of Parisian cafe life in this memoir that will be of great interest to literature devotees. Photos not seen by PW.

Campbell (Talking at the Gates: A Life of James Baldwin, LJ 4/1/91) details the passing of the literary torch from the Lost Generation to the Beat Generation. Beginning in the late 1940s with Richard Wright's first meeting in Paris with Gertrude Stein, Campbell opens a window into the early years of Beckett, Baldwin, Nabokov, and Henry Miller; the reigns of Camus and Sartre; each writer's struggle to find a suitable literary voice; and the rise and fall of Olympia Press. He closes the window in 1960 with the deaths of Camus, Boris Vian, and Wright (under suspicious circumstances), all within months of one another. He gives, however, a brief picture of young Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Mailer, just beginning to find their voices. One hopes Campbell's next book picks up right there, because there is much to be learned about the influences writers have on one another and about the importance of freedom of creativity from the tyrannies of race, sex, convention, politics, and economics. This slice of Parisian literary life between the Lost and Beat generations is an elegant document of the elemental, the existential, and the erotic in a city and time bathed in blue light. Black expatriate writers are the platform from which Campbell, biographer of James Baldwin, explores other literary outsiders in a weary, disillusioned postwar Paris. In exile were Richard Wright, James Baldwin, and hundreds of other black intellectuals who fled oppressive American racism to be feted in France as true men of letters. Campbell connects these writers--somewhat uneasily--to other literary outsiders in 1940s and 1950s Paris. The publishers of Zero, Points, and Merlin literary magazines, and the erotic/pornographic Olympia Press, moved with the tides of the weary, desperately intellectual French avant-garde. Together they published Sartre, Camus, Beckett, Miller, Genet, and Sade, some for the first time in English. The writer's risks became those publishers' risky fight for freedom--from censorship, restrictive bourgeois values, and civilization itself. Fascinating reading

After the end of the Second World War, a number of African Americans, including many of our most talented intellectuals, decided that America was just not a sufficiently hospitable home. Those who could left for Europe. Many, landed in Paris, which provided a far more civilized society.
Literary giants like James Baldwin, Richard Wright and other intellectuals found a place where their worth was determined by things more significant than skin color. This is the story of their experiences.

Porn in Paris

I purchased this book expecting to learn more about famous ex-pat authors living in post WW2 Paris. Indeed, the first part of the book, which concentrated on Richard Wright and James Baldwin, fully met my expectations. However after that the book details in minute detail the development of pornographic literature (heterosexual and homosexual)in Paris - authors and publishers. At some point I had enough and abandoned ship. It was just too boring.

Ann Matasar respectfully presents their stories, identifies the obstacles they have had to overcome, and highlights their achievements and contributions. From the Preface, by Arthur Kleinman:Patients and Healers in the Context of Culture presents a theoretical framework for studying the relationship between medicine, psychiatry, and culture. That framework is principally illustrated by materials gathered in field research in Taiwan and, to a lesser extent, from materials gathered in similar research in Boston. The reader will find this book contains a dialectical tension between two reciprocally related orientations: it is both a cross-cultural (largely anthropological) perspective on the essential components of clinical care and a clinical perspective on anthropological studies of medicine and psychiatry. That dialectic is embodied in my own academic training and professional life, so that this book is a personal statement. I am a psychiatrist trained in anthropology. I have worked in library, field, and clinic on problems concerning medicine and psychiatry in Chinese culture. I teach cross-cultural psychiatry and medical anthropology, but I also practice and teach consultation psychiatry and take a clinical approach to my major cross-cultural teaching and research involvements. The theoretical framework elaborated in this book has been applied to all of those areas; in turn, they are used to illustrate the theory. Both the theory and its application embody the same dialectic. The purpose of this book is to advance both poles of that dialectic: to demonstrate the critical role of social science (especially anthropology and cross-cultural studies) in clinical medicine and psychiatry and to encourage study of clinical problems by anthropologists and other investigators involved in cross-cultural research.

Top quality reference

This top quality reference, now getting a bit dated, provides one of the most thorough and detailed examinations of the Bordeaux region ever written. Though not as exciting to read as Markham's "1855" it is much more informative than Parker's "Bordeaux." Any serious collection of wine histories should include this book. I am hopeful that a newer edition will be arriving soon.

It's a compact guide - perfect.

The illustrations and information in this beautiful book are just perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway. Yes, there are bigger more comprehensive guides out there, but as the description of this book says - it's compact and is a guide to commonly found shells. It fits in any bag with ease, not too heavy, and being a hardback it doesn't get damaged in transit. Great gift for someone who travels, likes shells, or has a beginning level interest in shells.

Each page is gorgeous, and includes a distribution and habitat map, color coded segments of identification info, and the book is divided into easy to define sections. You can't lose here.

This book is pretty skimpy as shell guides go. Instead, I highly recommend Kenneth Wye's "The Encyclopedia of Shells," which I purchased after being disappointed with this one.

About the Author
Clive Coates, M.W., was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite by the French government, the Ruffino/Cyril Ray Memorial Prize for his work on Italian wine, and the title of Wine Writer of the Year for 1998/1999 in the Champagne Lanson awards. He has published The Vine, his independent fine wine magazine, since 1985. His books include Claret (1982), Wines of France (1990), Grands Vins: The Finest Chateaux of Bordeaux and their Wines (California, 1995), and Côte D'Or: A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy (California, 1997), which won the Champagne Veuve Clicquot Prize, the André Simon Award, and the James Beard Award.

Intense is good, Condensed is not

Clive Coates is a charming and often acerbic British writer who happily flaunts convention in his monthly wine newsletter by eschewing any form of number rating (no stars, no points, no grades). His ratings are terms like "fine" and "very fine indeed," which may or may not be helpful to many American readers, but there's no doubting his expertise and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, his tone often gets preachy and borders on snobbism though, in some of his other books (especially his valuable tome on Burgundy), the judgements are still precise and well-researched. This book is precise as far as it goes, but it doesn't go very far.
By attempting to cover all the wine properties of France, even the best ones are invariably dismissed in a few lines rather than explored in depth (two short paragraphs on Chateau Latour and just one for Chateau Lafite, for rexample). It's the USA Today of wine reporting, and terse, short paragraphs just don't suit Coates' expansive style even if he does award 1-3 stars for key properties.
For the same money, you can get Jancis Robinson's excellent Oxford Companion to Wine, a much better and more detailed reference, or Andrea Immer's exceptional wine course for anyone interested in the basics.

Master of Wine, indeed

This is an excellent encyclopedia of knowledge about French wine. It is personal, of course, but after sampling some of Coates' recommendations I can start to believe in the rest of them and feel it would be a very useful accompaniment on visits to the local wine store! The maps are beautifully simple and, taken together with the book "Terroir" these two books alone will provide an excellent basic library for the understanding of why French wines are (a) the best and (b) why some French wines are better than others!

An excellent book by a Master on the subject of French wines

Clive Coates is rightly considered one of the top experts on the wines of France because, together with Michael Broadbent, he holds the widest tasting experience of its wines, both chronologically and geographically. He also does an excellent job at sharing his great knowledge, through his newsletter (The Vine) and his books.
The Encyclopedia dispenses short but accurate and up-to-date information about all aspects of French wine, from appellations and geografical aspects, to specific wines and domaines. While the book obviously doesn't aim at providing in depth information about every single region and domain it mentions (that would take at least 30 volumes!), it surely is the most accurate introduction to the subject of French wines available today. The content is provided in a very clear and precise manner, the maps are excellent, and Coates' point of view is as usual very reliable, while at the same time absolutely impermeable to fashions and distortions, not to mention plain ignorance, so typical of today's wine journalism.
For those interested in more in depth information, I suggest his beautiful books C'te D'Or and Grands Vins, which focus respectively on Burgundy and Bordeaux.
Definitely an excellent guide for those approaching the subject of French wine, and a must have for serious scholars of French wine.

As a studier of religion for many years (although not as knowledgeable as some scholars) I find these books to be utterly unique in their scope and subject matter. They are not like other New Age books. The journey that Castaneda takes his readers is mind-boggling, and his experiences are simply beyond what most people have even remotely encountered.
Castaneda first met Don Juan in the early 60's, before the hippy movement, before psychodelic drugs became popular. He was studying anthropology in Los Angeles, and Don Juan served as a field source for some fading knowledge of tribal and shamanistic rituals in Northern Mexico. Castaneda was specifically interested in peyote, a plant that gives its users hallicinations and mixes the senses in strange ways, and which LSD was meant to be a chemical reproduction of. Castaneda's first book presents a very detailed scholastic interpretation of his experiences. All books after the first simply focus on Castaneda's experiences with Don Juan.
Castaneda's drug experiences are different from other accounts I have read, because they are intimately tied with the Yaqui philosophy and mythology. The drugs only serve as a means to an end, not as the end in themselves. The first 2 books in the series describe Castaneda's drugs experiences with Don Juan, but from the 3rd book on, the drugs disappear forever and Carlos' experiences are actually more fantastic, more amazing, more unbelieveable as he slowly becomes a practicing sorceror, traveling to alternate dimensions and battling other sorcerors. Many of the books seem to reach a definitive conclusion, only to have Castaneda's perceived understanding of Don Juan's teachings completely destroyed in the next volume. Again these experiences do not in any way compare to magic and sorcery you might find in pagan, christian, or celtic mythology, nor does the "world-philosophy" of Don Juan resemble in any way the wholistic ideals of Eastern religions like Hinduism or Buddhism. How can you describe things most people have never seen before? Castaneda does a good job, considering the fantastic nature of some of his journeys. However, while the visions and magical feats are mesmerizing to read, I often found that Don Juan gave his most profound knowledge while simply talking to Castaneda.
Do to its subject matter, most Christians will find these books offensive, but I promise you that nothing in any of these volumes will turn you onto the path of Satan :) There is a certain participation required from the reader - Castaneda repeatedly affirms that everything he has ever written is absolutely true, but intelligent readers will be constantly wondering if such fantastic things could possibly exist. By turning off this little nagging "naysayer" in my own head and allowing myself to simply sink into the mood of the work and believe, I found that I was better able to intuitively understand the very abstract concepts that overwhelm you. However, because these accounts are SO unbelieveable, SO fantastic, SO unlike our everyday life here in the US, I found that I never confused my world with Castaneda's. It's like reading a book about walking on the Moon - you can understand and appreciate what it must have been like, but you don't start wearing a spacesuit to work!

An Excellent and Entertaining Book

I enjoy Carlos Castaneda's books because they always offer an escape from reality -- in this case, I mean that quite literally.
Castaneda's books involve an age-old technique of storytelling, the teaching of a body of knowledge from a master to a pupil. In this case, the master, a Yaqui Indian known as Don Juan, teaches the ancient Toltec art of sorcery to a young, first-person narrator, Carlos Castaneda. This narrator is dubious and incredulous as Don Juan shows him things about the nature of reality and our perceptions of it, but increasingly he has to conclude that the world of Don Juan is an accurate description of the may facets of reality, and our modern world is merely one narrow view.
There is controversy over whether Castaneda's books are "real" --Castaneda was granted a PhD for his "field" work; but other scholars have found a lot of Castaneda's research to have no anthropological authenticity. Supporters of Castaneda dispute this.
That there is even an argument over whether the books are "real" or not indicates how good the stories are -- like the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, people really, desperately want to visit Castaneda's world. His books are riveting, fascinating, beautiful, and also very scary.
Although later books in the series (Tales of Power, for instance) are better than this introductory work; I think it is important to read the books in their order of writing, in order to get the "lessons" that Castaneda learns in the correct order.
I am a great fan of the books, even if they are 100% fiction. But one is really just never sure if they are. . .

Please don't stop at this book and read ALL the series!

A good 15 years ago, like many people I guess, I started reading this book after seeing it mentioned by many different sources. And, like many people, I got to the end of it wondering what the hell was all the fuss about. I basically got the feeling that Carlos was high like a kite all the time and was being made fun of by the "shaman" Don Juan.

BUT, more than a decade later I have met a friend and after discussing various spirituality-oriented subjects he asked me if I have already tried The Teachings Of Don Juan. I said yes, but that I found it was more a waste of time than anything else, and then he insisted that I read ALL the series, that only at the end will everything be revealed. So, rather reluctantly (and having a lot of free time on my hands) I took his advice and started reading the sequels. Indeed, only around the 3rd book (Journey to Ixtlan) does it all start coming into place. And it does not stop there, these initial events are constantly revisited and reinterpreted to a much clearer meaning in the following books. Sure, not everything should be taken at face value (Castaneda himself only started to understand what was really going on with him more than a decade after writing this book), but there are teachings that will change the way you see reality for the rest of your life, making it a definate must read.

As for the whole "real vs imaginary Don Juan" I think everyone involved in the debate are missing the essence and I invite them to remember what Don Juan said about the "art of stalking" (in later books). It is all pretty evident to me :)
