From Publishers Weekly
Dunhill and Freedman, who also collaborated on Glorious Gardens to Visit in and around New York, go west this time, choosing 65 choice spots from more than 180 surveyed not far from the city (and, of course, some inside it). Their commentary is pointed, informative, sometimes funny. "Asilomar's spiritual environment is as assiduously pruned as its landscape," they say of a dune and pine stretch in the Monterey neighborhood, while in the haven of an "agroecological research center" run by the University of California-Santa Cruz, "200 varieties of acacias and eucalyptus burst with frilly, fluffy, fuzzy fruits," and "a tiger-striped cat snoozes on a Salvation Army sofa." These two are writers. They stir the senses and make you want even more than is provided, bringing to mind future trips and the various rewards of the long-lasting California growing season. They also vividly evoke gardeners--like Grace Marchant, "an ex-Hollywood stuntwoman who retired to San Francisco in 1950 when the Filbert Street area was a city dump. She hauled off the debris and began planting." The rewards of gardening are human, as well as horticultural, and this guide is better than a guide--it's a stimulus. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
The authors provide descriptions of 65 gardens within three hours of San Francisco in a personal style--which is appropriate, for many of these gardens are personal gardens, requiring appointments to visit. Dunhill, a writer and lecturer about gardens, and coauthor Freedman collaborated on a similar guide to gardens in and around New York City, Glorious Gardents To Visit: 61 Gardens Within 3 Hours of New York City (Potter, dist. by Crown, 1989). The listings are arranged by region: San Francisco; East Bay and Sacramento area; Marin County; the Peninsula; and Monterey/Carmel. Each listing includes hours, admission fees, disability access, facilities, and events. Detailed instructions are given for reaching each garden by car or public transit. The gardens described range from stairstep gardens along streets in San Francisco to native plant research gardens, from university farms to wild areas, and they include sculpture gardens, water gardens, and commercial nurseries. For area libraries and extensive garden guide collections.

"Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream..."  The popular song beloved by generations of families with young children is now an exciting adventure story.  As two children row their boat downstream, it stops at a magical island, where they meet up with some monkeys, elephants, and--yikes-- a lion.  Now it's time to run as fast as they can back to the safety of their boat, before the lion catches up with them!  Preschoolers will delight in discovering a favorite verse on the printed page, and it's been shown that seeing and singing the words of a familiar song can help children with early stages of reading readiness.  The addition of inventive verses, beautiful art, and a visual storyline breathe new life into an old standard. "Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream."

PreSchool-Grade 2. In this British import, a boy, a girl, and their toy rabbit reenact the traditional song. The story begins with a peaceful water scene; the line "Life is but a dream" signals the start of an adventure. The children head for open sea, jump off on an island, and meet jungle animals. When they come across a lion, they wonder if he will have them "for his tea" and quickly head back to their little boat. They continue to row merrily, wondering, "Was it just a dream?" Music is included opposite the title page. Softly lined, gently colored illustrations are childlike, well composed, and effectively placed on each double-page spread to show movement and relative size.?Maria B. keep rowing
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book based of the well known children's tune row, row, row, your boat. Each page is delightfully illustrated and has a verse which adapts to the original tune. Two young children explore both the fun and the fantasy of a magical boat ride encountering elephants, monkeys and a lion. The journey home (to the original verse) leaves the young children questioning was this reality or a dream. Its a fun way to read with your children while encouraging imagination and creative thinking!

Essential Picture Book
By ARM
If I had to recommend one single picture book, this would be it.

My eldest daughter's favourite but loved by all my children. If we were away from home, we could always memorise the words easily.

Big bold illustrations that are the perfect mix of being detailed without being too complicated for the very little ones. Just the right amount of words on each page.

Only problem is that we have read it so often, the binding didn't hold, plus hard to get hold of in the book shops. This book is also a treasured favourite at many kindergartens.

child loves books
By A Mom
More kudos for the librarian at storytime! She introduces us to such great books that we usually come home and order them. Who knew there were additional verses to Row, Row, Row your boat. The artwork is beautiful. My son loves the catchy song, giggles at the animals, and constantly requests this book. I only wish it came in a board book. We keep it along with our other favorite paper books on the shelf. Other Favorites: It Looked Like Spilt Milk, The Baby Goes Beep.

Three Artists (Three Women): Modernism and the Art of Hesse, Krasner, and O'Keeffe, by Anne M. Wagner

This original and sharply obser-vant book gives new significance to three important figures in the history of twentieth-century art: Eva Hesse, Lee Krasner, and Georgia O'Keeffe. Anne Wagner looks at their imagery and careers, relating their work to three decisive moments in the history of American modernism: the avant-garde of the 1920s, the New York School of the 1940s and 1950s, and the modernist redefinition undertaken in the 1960s. Their artistic contributions were invaluable, Wagner demonstrates, as well as hard-won. She also shows that the fact that these artists were women—the main element linking the three—is as much the index of difference among their art and experience as it is a passkey to what they share.

authoritative, engaging & personal
By Kathlene Kelly
I greatly enjoyed Anne Wagner's work in Three Artists (Three Women). Not only did she write an exceptional Introduction for her work - something rare in my opinion - but she isn't afraid to tackle the idea that one of her subjects, Eva Hesse, might not have been such a commodity had she lived. Wagner doesn't insult the artist or offend the reader in her discourse about Hesse's semi-martyrdom. Instead she very matter-of-factly outlines reasons for considering that the sculptor might have been less novel. She is sharp but candid:

It is her (un)timely death that has meant that she has survived to play a special cultural role: forever under thirty-five, she answers a hunger for youthful tragic death. She is the `dead girl'...Much of the writing about the artist cannot resist taking advantage of the free mileage it gets from Hesse's early death. When it is harnessed to her troubled life, so called, an irresistible package results. (197)

Wagner's strong suit is her skill at assisting the reader to build an understanding of feminism, art and the history of women as artists. She draws on three rather conventional (in the academic sense) artists when one might prefer to see her focus on feminist artists who are a little more out of the ordinary - Shirin Neshat comes to mind. In all, however, the work is quite a valuable cornerstone for art study and her presentation of the subject of women as artists/artists as women and the discussion about the mutual exclusivity that has historically accompanied those two constructs is insightful.

Insightful, scholarly, and accessible
By A Customer
One is reluctant to criticize the reviews of other customers, yet the two reviews prior to mine attempt to force upon Wagner's book both an historical framework and a point of view that are outside of her intended goal. If one reads the book for what it is, one finds a work of analytical insight, scholarship, humanity, and understanding of historical context. Enjoy it, savor it, reflect upon it!

well-reviewed feminist art criticism
By A Customer
Everyone who reviewed it seemed to love this overview of the careers of 3 artists: Krasner, Hesse. It's a fun read, with great photos, but I wish art historians would start to see there's more to the sixties than Hesse: what about Agnes Martin, Lee Bontecou, Yoko Ono, Alison Knowles, and all the rest??
Wagner wants to be a good feminist, but ultimately, her approach is surprisingly traditional: canonical figures, marriage plot, sticks to the US, the known and alrady successful. Wants to avoid being "radical" or disturbing at all costs.

Hidden Talent: The Emergence of Hollywood Agents, by Tom Kemper

Katharine Hepburn, John Wayne, Lauren Bacall—behind each of these stars was a hidden force: the talent agent. In this first-ever history of Hollywood agents, Tom Kemper mines agency archives to present an insider's view on their tooth-and-claw rise to power during the studio era. It's a tale of ambitious characters, savvy calculation, muckraking, financial ruin, and ultimate triumph, and establishes the agent's vital role in the Hollywood business world. Existing studies characterize agents as a product of the 1950s, but Kemper revises the record to show how agents emerged from the primordial film industry during the late 1920s and carved themselves a permanent niche. Through case studies of key figures like Myron Selznick and Charles Feldman, we see that the agent's character and social relationships functioned within a business structure—a good reputation and powerful connections were his most precious assets. With wit and precision, Kemper locates Hollywood agents at the crossroads of talent and profit, and captures their central and enduring role in the burgeoning film industry.

Review
“[An] original and deeply researched study.” (Los Angeles Times 2009-12-23)

“Kemper’s work [is] both groundbreaking and valuable. . . . I learned something new in every chapter. Hidden Talent is a fascinating chronicle of the business side of Hollywood.” (Leonard Maltin, Movie Crazy 2010-01-22)

“Has there ever been a biographical film entirely about a Hollywood agent? Probably not. Still, some of the figures in Tom Kemper's new book would make lively subjects.” (Chronicle Of Higher Ed 2010-01-24)

“An important new perspective on the dynamics of production in the studio era.” (James Lyons Screening The Past 2011-06-16)

“Well presented and refreshing. . . . Highly recommended.” (J. M. Welsh Choice 2011-06-17)

“Kemper’s witty, engaging prose and skill as a storyteller make the book accessible to a wide audience.” (Eric Hoyt Senses Of Cinema 2009-12-24)

From the Inside Flap
"This is an extremely valuable contribution to the history of Hollywood and draws on the moment when a form of disorganized, post-Fordist capitalism came to characterize the industry, thanks to agents and stars breaking away from studio power. A landmark volume."—Toby Miller, author of Global Hollywood 2

“The demeaned and derided figure of the Hollywood agent gets his rightful screen credit in Thomas Kemper's Hidden Talent, an absorbing history of the hustlers, middlemen, and deal-makers who greased the wheels of the star-making machinery in Hollywood's Golden Age. In Kemper's fascinating account, the agent comes off less as Budd Schulberg's Sammy Glick than F. Scott Fitzgerald's Monroe Stahr: a cagey player who apprehended 'the whole equation' of filmmaking—nurturing nobodies into superstars, nursing projects to completion, and, for better and worse, setting the pattern for the way Hollywood does business today. And all for just ten percent off the top.”—Thomas Doherty, author of Hollywood's Censor: Joseph I. Breen and the Production Code Administration

"Tom Kemper's Hidden Talent makes a valuable contribution to the history of the motion picture industry. At a time when studios were closely held entities, the representative class emerged on the scene with great energy, skill, and bravado. Kemper's well-considered discussion of Myron Selznick and Charles Feldman wisely foretells the rise of the modern full service agency. This is a mandatory text for any serious student or practitioner in the film industry."—Jeff Berg, Chairman, International Creative Management

Lucid and fascinating
By A Reader
In Tom Kemper's history of the early years of the agency business in Hollywood, he produces a rare work of scholarship: he makes the history riveting to read. Not only does the book offer a persuasive analysis of the financial and even artistic relevance of agents to the motion picture business, but it does so in a way that makes individual agents like Myron Selznick and Charles Feldman stand out as three-dimensional characters one might find in a historical novel. This makes for a compelling read. I would highly recommend this to academics and film buffs alike. As the "narrative" comes to an end with the arrival of TV in the fifties, Kemper promises a sequel (in characteristic Hollywood fashion) and it would be a book I very much would look forward to reading.

Spinning Fantasies: Rabbis, Gender, and History (Contraversions: Critical Studies in Jewish Literature, Culture, and Society), by Miriam B

Miriam Peskowitz offers a dramatic revision to our understanding of early rabbinic Judaism. Using a wide range of sources—archaeology, legal texts, grave goods, technology, art, and writings in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin—she challenges traditional assumptions regarding Judaism's historical development.

Following the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple by Roman armies in 70 C.E., new incarnations of Judaism emerged. Of these, rabbinic Judaism was the most successful, becoming the classical form of the religion. Through ancient stories involving Jewish spinners and weavers, Peskowitz re-examines this critical moment in Jewish history and presents a feminist interpretation in which gender takes center stage. She shows how notions of female and male were developed by the rabbis of Roman Palestine and why the distinctions were so important in the formation of their religious and legal tradition.

Rabbinic attention to women, men, sexuality, and gender took place within the "ordinary tedium of everyday life, in acts that were both familiar and mundane." While spinners and weavers performed what seemed like ordinary tasks, their craft was in fact symbolic of larger gender and sexual issues, which Peskowitz deftly explicates. Her study of ancient spinning and her abundant source material will set new standards in the fields of gender studies, Jewish studies, and cultural studies.

"Peskowitz weaves rabbinic rhetoric, archaeological data, and critical theory into a detailed cultural map of Roman-period Judaism. Impressively documented, compellingly argued, this work demonstrates through its particular attention to the ordinary—work, tools, bodies, gossip, the minutiae of everyday life—how gender was constructed, maintained, and ultimately naturalized. A brilliant work from a major new voice, Spinning Fantasies is an interdisciplinary masterpiece."—A.J. Levine, Vanderbilt University

"The reader will never look at the texts explicated in this work in the same way again. Jews and Christians alike will be fascinated by the notions of gender that cut across religions in antiquity. Peskowitz's breadth of citation is dazzling, and her methodological sophistication will undoubtedly set standards for future studies."—Judith Hauptman, Jewish Theological Seminary

Sex, Death and God in L.A.From University of California Press

David Reid has gathered together the novelists, journalists, and cultural critics who could best address the myths, define the truths, and interpret the media images of the second largest city in the U.S. They report on the new Latino and Asian populations of South Central and the East Side and the old establishment of the West side; Downtown with its heavily mortgaged office towers held by Canadian and Japanese landlords; shuttered factories and thriving sweatshops; architecture from Irving Gill to Frank O. Gehry; messiahs from Krishnamurti to L. Ron Hubbard; rituals of power in Movieland and yoga and seduction in Beverly Hills. Ranging from acute political commentary to evocative literary impressions, this is a collection that will engage not only those who live in southern California but all those curious about this megalopolis in the desert.

From Publishers Weekly
Often as amorphous and sprawling as Los Angeles itself, these 11 essays, some of which have been previously published, blend reportage, politics, memoir and fantasy to gauge the temperature of the megalopolis, cool incubator of fashions, follies and the future. With the comparative advantages of Southern California fast disappearing, Nation columnist Alexander Cockburn predicts a long twilight for L.A. as a result of job flight and the aerospace industry's decline. New Left Review 's Mike Davis exposes the industrial peonage of Southeast L.A. and ponders the internationalization of downtown as corporate raiders, Japanese megadevelopers and trans-national bankers restructure the economy. On the personal side, novelist Carolyn See scrutinizes the love marketplace in interracial L.A. in the context of her own failed marriages to a part-Chinese man and "a Slovak." Fiction writer Eve Babitz muses on lust, yoga and the scarcity of sex in a city where even asceticism is eroticized. Screenwriter Jeremy Larner lays down the rules of life in movieland: "To be disturbed by anything is to be a loser." Reid is the author of West of the West.

From Kirkus Reviews
Cultural, sometimes labyrinthine, anthology-survey of the ever-changing entity of incorporated counties called Greater Los Angeles. This is a fascinating but mixed bag whose variety works against sustained interest. Readers caught by one aspect of L.A.-- as told by Eve Babitz, Alexander Cockburn, Mike Davis, Lynell George, Thomas S. Hines, Jeremy Larner, Ruben Martinez, David Reid, Carolyn See, or David Thomson--will not necessarily be absorbed with the other writers' comments. Right at the start, many readers will flounder in the wave of unfamiliar names, streets, districts, and buildings that washes in with Cockburn's overview of the Pacific Rim and his subsequent neighborhood-by-neighborhood trek that ends in a tour of ``the cruel frenzies of Downtown.'' Davis picks up on the loss of electoral power among minorities through gerrymandering and the ``new Industrial peonage.'' See has lively personal memories of her varied minority husbands who were interested in ``melting'' into the racial landscape by tying in with her, while Babitz writes well of the effects of yoga on her love life. George's ``City of Specters'' reviews her ties with death among blacks that gather into a depressive sense of doom she calls ``generational,'' adding that ``the concept of life has never been more ephemeral, the scope of a life-span more abstract.'' Editor Reid takes on exotic religions, focusing on Krishnamurti. Hines surveys L.A.'s outstanding architects (Irving Gill, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry), while Thomson gives us a tour of Mulholland Drive/Highway as ``Marilyn Monroe, 50 miles long, lying on her side on a ridge of crumbling rock, the crest of the Santa Monica mountains, with chaparral, wildflowers, and snakes writhing over her body.'' The book's one masterpiece is novelist/screenwriter Jeremy Larner's ``Rack's Rules,'' about the morals of power in ``Movieland.'' Sour and rarely sweet, most vital as memoir and fantasy. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The truth behing Sex,Death and God in L.A.
By A Customer
Sex, death and God in LA is a book targeted to a market of people who want to know about economic, demographic, political, and other issues about Los Angeles. The book is a collection of essays written by Eve Babitz, Alexander Cockburn, Mike Davis, Lynell George, Thomas S. Hines, Jeremy Larner, Ruben Martinez, David Reid, Carolyn See, and David Thomson who truly enlighten the reader about the benefits and problems of living in Southern California. The book was published on April 20, 1992. As a consequence much of the information as well as the feelings of the authors toward society may differ from the perspective of a reader in the late nineties. The reader will notice that the authors of these essays explain in detail almost every subject that they quote. David Reid editor of the book cleverly calls California the American Alexandria implying California's likeness to the city founded in Egypt in 332 BC by Alexander the Great which was located being close to the sea and inhabited by millions of immigrants. Sex, Death and God in L.A will take the reader through a journey where the authors explain the paradox that exists between L.A as racism, polluted and multicultural state and also paradise. The authors criticize the lack of values that exist in LA. They quote the case of the Menendez brothers. They condemn racism and talk about the Rodney King case. They give their opinion on US economy and politics and forecast times of recession. Finally they talk about the demographics of Los Angeles. There is about 20 million immigrants in the US, 8% can be found in Southern California. Sex, Death and God in LA discusses the problems that have developed from the immigration of Vietnamese, Asian, Koreans, Latino, Blacks and Europeans to California. The authors discuss their impact on California's economy and how they have helped California to emerge during the past decades. In short California is seen as a place where religions, languages, customs and why not - sexuality, lifestyle, and habits - from people from all around the world meet to give place to the unique Californian Culture. I definitely recommend Sex, Death and God in L.A. However, the reader has to be a critical thinker. He or she has to be aware and informed of the issues that are quoted and explained in the book. I think people who read this book and do not know much about California may not be able to understand the book or get the wrong image about it. Finally, I would like to say that although Sex, Death and God is a good book to read it doesn't explain fully what people should know about California. The book goes in detail explaining the troubles and how the low-income minorities contribute to the American society. Nevertheless, the book doesn't talk much about the high-income minority. In other words they give the reader the idea that California is inhabited by minorities that are not successful or that are just part of the working class, while whites people manage country. I would like to end recommending the book for critical thinkers who do not let themselves convince easily. The book is worth the amount paid and more. If you feel the need to know more about LA this is the book to read.

A book with ruff vocabulary.
By A Customer
The book Sex,Death and God in L.A. by David Reid (Editor) is a very difficult book to read. Judging on what I have read, I would not recommend it to just anyone with a low vocabulary. Although, the book does gives you the opportunity to learn new words. The vocabulary in this book is very structural. My vocabulary is not very strong, but by reading this book I have learned new words and more about Los Angeles. If you are into knowing more about Los Angeles and having a wonderful vocabulary, the book Sex, Death and God in L.A. is the way to go.

The History of Gardens, by Christopher Thacker

The spirit of a race or an age can be reflected even in the choice and use of plants: with the coming ofZen Buddhism, the Japanese practically ceased to grow flowers in their gardens, an attitude which Le Notre, garden designer ofVersailles, who once said 'flowers are for nursemaids' would doubtless have appreciated. In this fascinating and highly informative book, Christopher Thacker tells the history of gardens from their origins in the 'natural' paradises of Greek myth to the present day. Studying individual gardens or garden topics which are rep~ntative of an age or region, he builds up a comprehensive survey of the gardens and garden theories of an era. Whether Dr Thacker is discussing garden philosophers and designers (Alberti, Mollet, de Vries, Capability Brown, Genrude Jekyll, Russell Page, and many others), or bringing to life the lost gardens of the past, like the Yuan Ming Yuan in Peling, or William Shenstone's the Leasowes, or surveying the weird and mysterious statuary of Bomarzo, his text is always absorbing and authoritative. Profusely illustrated, this book should become a classic on its subject.

"Ancient gardens are imaginatively reconstructed through written descriptions and modern ones are depicted in the numerous illustrations that are the chief glory of the book. . . . A fine survey."--"Library Journal

"Mr Thacker's history will be easy to supplement but almost impossible to excel. As editor of Garden History. . . he is our leading expert on the subject. He writes with scholarship, fluency, and love."--Nigel Nicholson, The Daily Telegraph "Tom Carter's history of the Victorian garden is for those whose appetite has already been whetted, perhaps by Thacker. Carter provides fascinating details, intriguing for their own sake and for their insight into the English society of the time. Though both books may lack the charm and wit of others' efforts at garden history, such as Ronald King's "The Quest for Paradise," they add nicely to the garden bookshelf."--Tom Carter, Los Angeles Times

An enlightened walk in historical gardens
By Heather Sanft
Christopher Thacker would be a delight to meet in any historically significant garden. Thacker's luscious use of writings and poetry interspersed with historical detail and visuals give the reader a lavishly satisfying overview of the history of gardens.

This book enriches our knowledge of cultural diversity and the exciting significant historical figures who lay hidden in the gardens. Thacker inspires us to go explore the garden with all our senses like appreciating the look, bouquet, taste and personality of a fine fruit wine.

By Aristotle Dipteron
THE HISTORY OF GARDENS is a very readble book. I have read only four chapters, but appreciate Thacker's style of writing and, especially, I appreciate that Thacker carefully explains horticultural and architectural terms. THE HISTORY OF GARDENS should be the first book read by anyone who wants to learn about the history of garden styles. This is not a book about growing garden plants, but rather is a book about the different garden designs and how plants are used to achieve those designs.

Making Peace, by George Mitchell

UPDATED WITH A NEW PREFACE

Fifteen minutes before five o'clock on Good Friday, 1998, Senator George Mitchell was informed that his long and difficult quest for an Irish peace effort had succeeded--the Protestants and Catholics of Northern Ireland, and the governments of the Republic of Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom, would sign the agreement. Now Mitchell, who served as independent chairman of the peace talks for the length of the process, tells us the inside story of the grueling road to this momentous accord and the subsequent developments that may threaten, or strengthen, the chance for a lasting peace in Northern Ireland.

Amazon.com Review
Former United States senator George Mitchell tells the inside story of how he maneuvered the warring factions of Northern Ireland into signing the Good Friday peace agreement in 1998. This was no small task, requiring him to bring together Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, Catholic moderate John Hume, Protestant politico David Trimble, unionist Ian Paisley, Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern, and British prime minister Tony Blair. Mitchell's prose is a model of clarity--a surprising quality coming from the pen of a politician, especially one of the most partisan Senate majority leaders of all time. There is plenty of detail about the negotiations and all of their turns, but never so much as to become tedious. Along the way, Mitchell offers interesting asides on achieving success in politics and diplomacy: "As majority leader of the United States Senate, I had learned that when you've got the votes, you vote. Delay can only hurt." It's too soon to know the ultimate outcome of Mitchell's labors, but initial signs are hopeful, suggesting that this memoir might have real staying power. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
Politics, according to Bismarck, is the art of the possible. Mitchell, the former Senate majority leader, used his mastery of this art to achieve the seemingly impossible: a peace settlement in Northern Ireland. This is his account of his role as chairman of the interparty negotiations and of how the major nationalist and unionist political partiesAand the British and Irish governmentsAmanaged to forge the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement. Recruited by President Clinton to serve as an intermediary in the peace process, Mitchell spent nearly three years trying to create the conditions that made the final agreement possible. It wasn't easy. The IRA temporarily abandoned its ceasefire in the middle of the process, and extremist unionist and nationalist paramilitary groups tried their utmost to thwart the process by continuing to conduct bombings and shootings. Mitchell describes the twists and turns of the peace process in comprehensive detail, and his overview of the conflict provides a concise introduction to the turbulent history of Northern Ireland. He came to know all of the major protagonists very well, and his shrewd assessments of Gerry Adams ("sincerely trying hard, in difficult and dangerous circumstances, to bring his supporters into the grand tent of democracy"), David Trimble ("he saw the opportunity to end a long and bitter conflict, and he did not want to go down in the history books as the man who let it pass") and other political leaders enrich the book. In discussing the crucial final negotiating session, the narrative becomes as fast-paced as any thriller. While noting that the peace remains fragile, Mitchell provides solid evidence for believing the Good Friday agreement will hold and that the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland have finally come to an end.

From Library Journal
The landmark 1998 Good Friday Agreement of Northern Ireland still holds, however threatened. That agreement was the result of several years of intense, difficult negotiations led by former senate majority leader Mitchell (Not for America Alone: The Triumph of Democracy and the Fall of Communism, LJ 4/15/97). Here he presents a readable, illuminating portrait of the negotiation process, offering vivid snapshots of the key players and the high and low points of the whole affair. His understanding and observations are characterized by the same good sense and fairness that have long been regarded as hallmarks of his character and key elements in his successful senate career. Mitchells unusual family backgroundhis orphaned Irish American father was raised by Lebanese Americans, and his mother is Lebanesemay account for some of his understanding of and obvious patience with ethnic and religious tensions and differences. Highly recommended for larger public and academic libraries where such political fare is of interest.Charles V. Cowling, Drake Memorial Lib., Brockport, NY

A Clear, Consise Memoir
By A Customer
Senator Mitchell deserves tremendous respect for his (continuing) role in the Northern Ireland peace process. This book delivers a clear and consise account of his participation in the events that led up to the Good Friday agreement. We get glimpses of all the major players and many unsung heroes who worked behind the scenes.
Perhaps in reaction to the long-winded Irish politicians he uses a very broad brush to describe the events and often condenses days of complex talks into a few sentences. This is not, as I initially hoped, a detailed description of the negotiations. But it does portray the kind of patience and determination that was needed to pull everything together and gives a taste of the complexity of the political situation around Northern Ireland. It's a nice read for anyone, but especially geared for the average American.

Good look @ process of peace, but too early for real details
By John M
This book is an enjoyable read which will introduce you to all the major players in the negotiations that led to the Good Friday Peace Accords, and give a good sense of what the challenges were and how the various parties worked to overcome them.
Unfortunately, it was probably too early for Mitchell to come out with any new details, and he is reluctant to be overly critical of any of the parties -- no doubt a wise move as the peace process contiues to move forward.
Hopefully, we will see another account from Mitchell in the future which will give a little bit more bite in terms of how he really feels. In the mean time, this book is well worth the quick read.

Selected Letters of Alessandra Strozzi, Bilingual edition (Biblioteca Italiana), by Alessandra Strozzi

The letters of Alessandra Strozzi provide a vivid and spirited portrayal of life in fifteenth-century Florence. Among the richest autobiographical materials to survive from the Italian Renaissance, the letters reveal a woman who fought stubbornly to preserve her family's property and position in adverse circumstances, and who was an acute observer of Medicean society. Her letters speak of political and social status, of the concept of honor, and of the harshness of life, including the plague and the loss of children. They are also a guide to Alessandra's inner life over a period of twenty-three years, revealing the pain and sorrow, and, more rarely, the joy and triumph, with which she responded to the events unfolding around her.

This edition includes translations, in full or in part, of 35 of the 73 extant letters. The selections carry forward the story of Alessandra's life and illustrate the range of attitudes, concerns, and activities which were characteristic of their author.

Letters of a 15th century bourgeois woman focuses on religion, marriage and social status
By Mark K. Rempel
This was required reading for an undergraduate course on the history of Renaissance Florence at a state university. It is hard to evaluate letters from a person from another time and place, but these letters serve to place the student in the context of the time. She was very religious, very concerned about her sons, and spoke incessantly about money matters. She was of the lower nobility of 15th century Florence and was quite concerned about her social status, respectability, and the proper rituals to gain favor with the Medicis. Marriage for her children was very paramount to her, as was religion. She wrote about politics when she could, though she feared her letters being read by strangers. She was a widow for most of her life and never remarried, for she realized she had more social power as a widow than as a wife, thus as a widow she could manage the Strozzi family affairs without much interference, and, she obviously preferred it that way. But in no way can she be called a feminist as she thought little of her daughters and tended to evaluate women only as potential mates for her beloved sons. She was what we would call today an upper-middle class bourgeois, concerned about status and wealth and keeping things traditional. But, was she typical of the Time? No. Few women could read and write back then and her family had been exiled by the Medicis for most of the time the letters were written. Also, having widow for so long managing such a large house was probably unusual for the time. This is an abridged edition. The Italian publication has more letters. I give it three stars, but as rather generous, as I didn't find it all that interesting, but as an example of History of Women it is of some importance to some historians

An amazing collection of original letters and translation.
By The Strife of Love in a Dream
This primary source is one of the most amazing I've ever seen. Of the 72 known letters written by Alessandra Strozzi, this book collects about half and translates them in a unique side-by-side version with Italian on the left page, and the English version on the right. The letters were collected by Cesare Guasti in 1877 from originals, but the book does not include most of the annotations Guasti made. There are footnotes and also a useful (if annoyingly incomplete) index, as well as a bibliography.

The translations look excellent to me (though there are some places where clothing and dye names aren't quite what I'd imagine) and show a slice of life that really does trace Alessandra's life from middle-aged exile to elderly political matriarch. It shows how she gets her daughters married off and how she pesters her two sons to get married; it talks about how her third, youngest son dies and her grief afterward; she talks extensively about her religious sentiments and how to live a good, virtuous life. Little comments about the foods she liked and how she treated her slave(s) crop up here and there, and there are all kinds of snippets in her writings about the political system and especially the various ways the exile affected her family. Famous people like the Medici weave in and out of her letters; one highlight to me was how her daughter-in-law attended Lorenzo de Medici's wedding in 1469.

The real disappointment in the book was that it's not at all complete. Of the 35 or so letters, many are abridged. Some things I wish were there got snipped, like one letter wherein she advises her older son not to buy a Circassian slave even though they're beautiful, but to get a Tartar instead because they're dependable and strong. That's totally missing from this book. I really hope that Gregory releases a complete translation of the letters--and I wouldn't mind seeing Guasti's original annotations and sidenotes along with it. There's some incredible stuff here that you just won't see (like the letters written after her death wherein she gave a lot of her old clothes to charity) unless you know where to find the originals online and can translate it yourself. Overall, though, I would recommend this book vastly and do suggest it for anybody seeking to understand the period.
