The Invention of Prophecy: Continuity and Meaning in Hopi Indian Religion, by Armin W. Geertz

Armin Geertz corrects what he sees as basic American and European tendencies to misrepresent non-Western cultures. Carefully documenting the historical role of prophecy in Hopi Indian religion, Geertz shows how prophecies about the end of the world have been created by the Hopi Traditionalist Movement and used by non-Indian movements, cults, and interest groups. Many of the seeming peculiarities of Hopi religion and culture have been invented, he says, by tourists, novelists, journalists, and scholars, and the millennial Traditionalist Movement has subtly co-authored European and American stereotypes of Indians. Geertz's richly detailed examples and persuasive arguments will be welcomed by all those interested in Native American studies, comparative religions, anthropology, and sociology.

Review
"Methodologically sophisticated, theoretically informed, and substantively significant. It represents a major achievement by a gifted scholar in comparative religion who has already established his competence, creativity and resourcefulness in his previous publications. This book presents an extended analysis and discussion of important features of Hopi Religion, especially prophecy, as well as relevant approaches to the study of religion. Because of this dual focus "The Invention of Prophecy advances not only our knowledge or Hopi Religion, but also the debate about theory and method currently proceeding in comparative religion. . . . Scholars will welcome this magnificent contribution not only to our knowledge of Hopi religion but also to the scientific study of religion."--"Numen

New Age Practitioners: Hang on a minute, read this book
By A Customer
A very interesting hypothesis and probably right on track. It is easy to believe that the grandeur of the "Hopi Prophecies" is merely a product of charlatan spoof that has precipitated ridiculous misconceptions and notions of a very important aspect of Hopi culture. Perhaps some elements of these prophecies are based in truth but what Armin Geertz has shown is that because of polital factionalism and intracultural bias many of these myths of Hopi religion were created merely to make certain non-Hopi individuals a great deal of money and to substantiate the political (and thus prestigious) ambitions of particular Hopi leaders. Before you jump onto the "New Age" bandwagan and start beating the drum to the dance of your commercial kachina, you should probably purchase this book and study it closely. In the end, just try thinking!

Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW, and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century, by Randy Shaw

Cesar Chavez is the most prominent Latino in United States history books, and much has been written about Chavez and the United Farm Worker's heyday in the 1960s and '70s. But left untold has been their ongoing impact on 21st century social justice movements. Beyond the Fields unearths this legacy, and describes how Chavez and the UFW's imprint can be found in the modern reshaping of the American labor movement, the building of Latino political power, the transformation of Los Angeles and California politics, the fight for environmental justice, and the burgeoning national movement for immigrant rights. Many of the ideas, tactics, and strategies that Chavez and the UFW initiated or revived—including the boycott, the fast, clergy-labor partnerships and door-to-door voter outreach—are now so commonplace that their roots in the farmworkers' movement is forgotten.

This powerful book also describes how the UFW became the era's leading incubator of young activist talent, creating a generation of skilled alumni who went on to play critical roles in progressive campaigns. UFW volunteers and staff were dedicated to furthering economic justice, and many devoted their post-UFW lives working for social change. When Barack Obama adopted “Yes We Can” as his 2008 campaign theme, he confirmed that the spirit of “Si Se Puede” has never been stronger, and that it still provides the clearest roadmap for achieving greater social and economic justice in the United States.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Bay Area community organizer Shaw (Reclaiming America) examines the enduring influence of the United Farm Workers model of grassroots organization, which he pointedly credits with the majority of labors successes since the 1960s and a wellspring of 21st-century movements for democratic rights. He retells the story of Cesar Chavez and the UFWs unprecedented success in mobilizing a broad coalition as well as winning political clout and material gains for workers through such tactics as boycotts, appeals to spiritual values, fasting and community-centered organizing. Shaw describes a generation of young activists passing through the UFWs crucible of idealism, sacrifice and individual initiative, and into a lifetime of service to social justice causes; indeed, it was the very success of the UFWs campaigns that contributed, ironically, to a gradual power drain on the union in the 1980s. Leading organizers and political strategists like Susan Sachen and Marshall Ganz went on to work for other unions like SEIU or were hired away by mainstream electoral campaigns. Finally, Shaw evaluates the capacities of todays labor movement to build on the UFWs legacy of self-directed, on-the-ground training, political solidarity and far-reaching social idealism. (Jan.)

Obama Supporters Take Note! / A Must Read for Social Justice Activists
By Amazon Customer
Beyond the Fields follows in the tradition of Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States by providing little known history about the UFW, its organizing tactics and its profound legacy on political activism in America over the past four decades. The book provides a historic overview of the UFW, its leaders-- particularly Cesar Chavez--, its achievements and the lasting impact of tactics developed and used by the UFW on political organizing around the country. Many of the stories of post-UFW social justice struggles in the book are riveting, including the Justice for Janitors campaign in Miami and a history of the national movement for immigrant rights. The book is particularly timely now because of the use of UFW organizing strategies in the ground game to elect Barack Obama. Great as it will be to have Obama in the White House, Obama's election isn't a magic solution to the country's many and deep social problems. Shaw's book provides valuable history to guide activists in the battles to come.

Gripping Account of Fight for Social Justice
By Capitol Junkie
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For me, its greatest strength lies in the author's ability to describe organizing struggles from the past and make them feel fresh and immediate. The "Yes We Cane" chapter (which documents a labor battle in Florida) in particular was a page turner, something rare and difficult to accomplish with historical subject matter.

I also think the author accomplishes one of his stated goals, which was to canonize the important work of these UFW activists - work I would've never known about had I not read this book. The breadth and depth of information uncovered by the author is unbelievable. An all-around excellent read.

Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement, by Rita Gonzalez, Howard Fox, Chon A. Noriega

Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement is the first comprehensive consideration of Chicano art in almost two decades and the largest exhibition of cutting-edge Chicano art ever presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Traditionally described as work created by Americans of Mexican descent, Chicano art first emerged during the vibrant Chicano rights movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. This catalog and exhibition explore the experimental tendencies within today's Chicano art, which is oriented less toward painting and polemical assertion and more toward conceptual art, performance, film, photography, and media-based art, as well as "stealthy" artistic interventions in urban spaces. Three essays by Rita Gonzalez, Howard N. Fox, and Chon A. Noriega explore the topic in depth. With more than two hundred color illustrations, twenty-five individual artist portfolios, and a wryly subversive chronology of significant moments in Chicano cultural history, Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement charts new territory and provides a conceptual sampling of Chicano art today.

Chicano Art: A Rake's Progress
By Grady Harp
PHANTOM SIGHTINGS: Art After the Chicano Movement" both in the exhibition and in the catalogue supporting it begins with photos chronicling the art collective Asco (Spanish for nausea). Patssi Valdez, Gronk, Willie Herron III and Harry Gamboa Jr., aspiring artists, writers and filmmakers when they formed Asco in the early '70s, drew from Chicano traditions and contemporary art strategies to address hot-button issues -- from representations of gang activity in the media and the underrepresentation of Chicano artists in museums to the war in Vietnam. Chicano art as a movement arose in the late 1960s and early 1970s as an artistic expression of the Chicano rights movement. The curatorial direction of this exhibition was to 'explore the experimental tendencies within today's Chicano art, which is oriented less toward painting and polemical assertion and more toward conceptual art, performance, film, photography, and media-based art, as well as "stealthy" artistic interventions in urban spaces.' While today in most of the country the work of the Chicano artists is held in high esteem, until the rather graphic statements sprayed on the walls of the Los Angeles County Museum's walls there was little notice of what was considered to be quaint, tribal art. All that changed and now this exhibition explores the progress of Chicano art since that explosive moment in time.

'The king is dead. Long live the king!' read the banners! 'In this instance, Chicano art is the new monarch ascending the throne to extend the line of succession. What's passing into history is an aesthetic that matured in the 1970s, produced by Mexican American artists with an eye toward articulation of Mexican American experience. A full generation later, what has arrived on the scene is something different -- an aesthetic produced by Mexican American artists with an eye toward articulating whatever they darn well please. The exhibition's curators, Howard N. Fox and Rita Gonzalez of LACMA, and Chon A. Noriega, director of the Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA, brought together 120 works by 31 artists, with the goal of following "an idea rather than representing a constituency," thus focusing on a slice of art produced by young artists with mostly Mexican roots, working from "conceptual and interventionist tendencies."

The art represent here is aerosol (read graffiti) photography, film, video, painting, drawing and sculpture, and for an exhibition as extensive as this, the accompanying catalogue manages to corral it all in and make it make sense. This book is a taste of history and a dramatically impressive documentation of an important movement in art history. Grady Harp, October 11

Grade 8 Up—Assembled from hundreds of authoritative sources, this valuable atlas will promote a deeper understanding of the immense variety of our world's ecosystems and the array of challenges to their continued stability. Following an introductory overview, brightly colored maps and accompanying essays are arranged in broad categories to highlight, in turn, major habitats; species distributions; ominous changes arising from a range of causes from coastal development to pollution; and effective, protective measures such as establishing nature preserves and regulation of commerce. National boundaries are present but almost invisible on the world maps presented on nearly every spread; instead, it's the natural boundaries of mangrove forests and marine reefs, the color-coded indications of species diversity, human population density, levels of water stress, and like information that stand out, conveying the truth that environmental issues belong to all of us. Gorgeous nature photos on nearly every spread further enhance the presentation. The authors of the substantial narratives eloquently promote the same view while keeping the facts and statistics at digestible levels and gathering the extensive technical notes at the end. Closing with a second set of maps that divide the world into "realms" and show the hundreds of land and water "ecoregions" in each, this work can't help but promote a broader worldview in students of ecology, nature, and conservation—John Peters, New York Public Library

In addition to the large color maps, excellent color photographs and illustrations supplement the text. Content is organized in four broad areas: “Habitats,” “Species,” “A World of Change” (covering topics such as climate change and nitrogen pollution), and “Taking Action.” Interspersed throughout the volume are about a dozen essays by noted international authorities. Examples include “Global Contamination of the Biosphere,” “Future of Fisheries,” and “Convergent Conservation.” Appendixes contain 11 color maps representing all the terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecoregions of the world and a 29-page listing of technical notes and references arranged by chapter and topic. A five-page index provides subject access to the contents. Want to Save the Planet? First we need the facts. And, they're here!
By David Crumm
Going green, creation care, saving the planet--the motives are powerful in millions of individuals and families around the world. But where do we start? Everybody's got at least one or two good ideas.

First, it's wise to start with the facts. What's needed in our sphere of influence? What's happening in regions close to home--and half way around the world? Where ARE those grasslands we're trying to preserve? Where ARE those forests that we need to protect?

The Nature Conservancy, founded in 1951 and focused on taking a science-based approach toward environmental issues, is the overall "author" of this lavish volume from University of California Press. It's new for the spring of 2010, so the global information in these 80 full-color maps is as up-to-date as possible.

Here are examples: Want to see the spots on Earth with the greatest surviving mammal diversity? They're here in easy-to-understand color. Where are the Earth's small but crucial "dots" of protected marine life? They're shown here. Where are freshwater invasive species a threat? You'll see global patterns.

Invest in this book, show it to friends, discuss it in your small group--even bring it to Bible study in your congregation to show where Creation care is most crucial right now.

Full disclosure: I am an employee of the Nature Conservancy, and know the authors of this book. That being said, it is a fun read and a great resource on global patterns of a number of different conservation issues. To those put off by the price tag, or who just don't like owning books, you can access digital versions of the maps (without all of the explanatory text and photos) here: http://maps.tnc.org/globalmaps.html

Great ecoregions maps plus more
By adrian saliu
This is the most relevant atlas available for ecological studies. The amount of data in this is incredible. Im constantly looking for maps on the internet of ecoregions on a global level, and now I have it all in one book. There are maps in this book I never even think about, but seeing them puts so much more into perspective for me about the world we live in.

A Surplus of Memory: Chronicle of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (A Centennial Book), by Yitzhak (

In 1943, against utterly hopeless odds, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto rose up to defy the Nazi horror machine that had set out to exterminate them. One of the leaders of the Jewish Fighting Organization, which led the uprisings, was Yitzhak Zuckerman, known by his underground pseudonym, Antek. Decades later, living in Israel, Antek dictated his memoirs. The Hebrew publication of Those Seven Years: 1939-1946 was a major event in the historiography of the Holocaust, and now Antek's memoirs are available in English.

Unlike Holocaust books that focus on the annihilation of European Jews, Antek's account is of the daily struggle to maintain human dignity under the most dreadful conditions. His passionate, involved testimony, which combines detail, authenticity, and gripping immediacy, has unique historical importance. The memoirs situate the ghetto and the resistance in the social and political context that preceded them, when prewar Zionist and Socialist youth movements were gradually forged into what became the first significant armed resistance against the Nazis in all of occupied Europe. Antek also describes the activities of the resistance after the destruction of the ghetto, when 20,000 Jews hid in "Aryan" Warsaw and then participated in illegal immigration to Palestine after the war.

The only extensive document by any Jewish resistance leader in Europe, Antek's book is central to understanding ghetto life and underground activities, Jewish resistance under the Nazis, and Polish-Jewish relations during and after the war. This extraordinary work is a fitting monument to the heroism of a people.

From Publishers Weekly
This absorbing, important memoir by a leader of the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw ghetto uprising is a great human drama that reaffirms the moral dignity and courage of ordinary people in the most extreme circumstances. Zuckerman (1915-1981), known by his underground pseudonym Antek, was a founder and commander of the Jewish Fighting Organization, which waged guerrilla warfare against the Nazis in April and May 1943. After the doomed uprising, he helped countless Jews who hid in "Aryanized" Warsaw. He and his wife, Zivia Lubetkin, a fellow resistance fighter, assisted the exodus of Jews to Palestine, where they themselves later emigrated. First published in Israel in 1991 and issued in this fluent translation to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the uprising, Zuckerman's autobiographical narrative extends from the German invasion of Poland in 1939 to Polish pogroms against Jews in 1946. The book sheds invaluable light on Jewish resistance to the Nazis and on Jewish-Polish relations. Photos.

From Library Journal
Zuckerman, known by his underground name, Antek, was one of the leaders of the Jewish Fighting Organization who directed the uprising, from the outside, in the Warsaw ghetto in 1944. He remained in Poland until early 1947, organizing emigration to Palestine, where he then settled until his death in 1981. When his memoirs first appeared in Hebrew two years ago, they were harshly criticized for their rambling character and criticism of the tactics and strategy of the Jewish underground--criticisms that seem misplaced. Zuckerman is certainly bitter and argues convincingly that if the Jewish Fighting Organization had focused on deterring Jewish collaboration, the deportation of the Jews would have been more difficult to carry out. Interestingly, Zuckerman, who had access, is much less critical than most Jewish historians of Polish behavior in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. His memoirs will be essential reading for those interested in the Jewish tragedy during World War II.

From Kirkus Reviews
A valuable, remarkably full memoir by the last commander of the Jewish Fighting Organization, who helped lead the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Polish Uprising, and subsequent efforts to rescue Jews during and after WW II. Known to anyone familiar with Holocaust or resistance literature by his underground name of ``Antek,'' Zuckerman (1915- 81) displays an amazing memory for wartime names, dates, places, and political nuances. (The title will ring ironically true for readers who don't share his obsession with political and organizational minutiae.) The narrative--ably edited and translated by Judaica-scholar Harshav--is based on transcripts of tape recordings, in Hebrew, that Zuckerman agreed to make only after the Yom Kippur War of 1973. While there's actually far from a surplus of poignant memories here, there are enough to carry the motivated reader--including recollections of the footsteps of Zuckerman's father as he walked away for the last time, of the despair of feeling like ``a rear guard in the parade of death,'' and of the subsequent exhilaration at killing Germans and surviving to strike again. The most compelling aspects of the endless political intrigue involve fluctuating relationships with right- and left- wing Polish militias, clashes with Jewish ghetto police, and ambivalence toward the Zionist underground's leadership in Palestine. One steady but passionless relationship concerns fellow Jewish Fighting Organization leader Zivia Lubetkin, whom Zuckerman ended up marrying. The meticulously detailed record of a selfless, highly organized man who rose to challenge our century's ultimate chaos and depravity. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Surplus of Memory
By Gary Glassman
" I don't think there's any need to analyze the Uprising in military terms. This was a war of less than a thousand people against a mighty army, and no one doubted how it was likely to turn out. This isn't a subject for study in a military school. Not the weapons, not the operations, not the tactics. If there's a school to study the human spirit, there it should be a major subject. The really important things were inherent in the force shown by Jewish youths, after years of degradation, to rise up against their destroyers and determine what death they would choose: Treblinka or Uprising. I don't know if there's a standard to measure that." -Yitzhak Zuckerman From A Surplus of Memory A Surplus of Memory is Yitzhak Zuckerman's memoir of the events of 1939-1946, the period before, during and after the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Zuckerman, or "Antek," his pseudonym in the Jewish underground, was a commander of the Jewish Fighting Organization (ZOB), which became the primary fighting force in the Jewish ghetto. After the Uprising, Antek led clandestine operations in Aryan Warsaw, then commanded a unit of Jewish fighters during the Polish Uprising. After the war, he helped Jews returning from exile in the Soviet Union from death camps, and those emerging from hiding after the Nazi occupation. Antek became a major figure in Brikha, the movement that smuggled Jews into Palestine after the war. He finally immigrated to Palestine in 1947 and co-founded Lohamei Ha-Getaot, the Ghetto Fighters' Kibbutz where he established a Holocaust museum. He was also a witness at the trial of Adolph Eichmann. Antek was a member of Zionist youth organizations in Poland before the war. At the age of twenty-four after the blitzkrieg stormed through Poland, he risked his life to travel into the Nazi occupied zone with his destination Warsaw, where he had been summoned to teach by Ha Shomer, a Zionist group. His mission was to help sustain the Jewish educational movement. After all was lost, Antek worked around the clock supporting the exodus of resistance survivors from the inferno of the ghetto to the relative safety of Aryan Warsaw where approximately 20,000 Jews were already in hiding. He arranged for transportation and shelter in temporary apartments for the survivors and devised subterranean escape routes though the sewers where he shepherded the survivors of the carnage. Many escaped via this route with Antek, but other tortured souls lost their way and died horrible deaths in the maze, eaten by rats or swept away by torrents. Others escaped through a tunnel to the other side. Antek continued his activities in the underground, in particular organizing a Jewish unit that fought in the Warsaw Uprising. After the war he stayed in Europe and continued to be an advocate for Jewish survivors. A tragic postwar chapter was his rescue mission to the town of Kielce where sixty Jews had been killed, victims of a pogrom. After the war, surviving Jews were met with hostility and violence when they attempted to return to their homes. Antek led a support contingent of Soviet soldiers and Polish government officials to Kielce and transported Jewish survivors to safety in Lodz. Antek also became a leader in the Brikha movement, smuggling Holocaust survivors into Palestine. During the remainder of his life in Israel, Antek told his stories of the Uprising to those on his kibbutz. He admitted that he suffered from a "surplus of memory," thus the book's title, the result of thirty-eight tapes and sixty hours of conversation. The burden of the events and comrades that lived and died with him in the Warsaw ghetto became more vivid with each passing year. He told friends," I feel in my soul that I'm a thousand years old, since every hour there counts for a year in me." . Antek's survival through the Holocaust and telling his Surplus of Memory were perhaps his greatest act of resistance. This is an essential piece of not only Holocaust history, but in the history of humanity's resistance to oppression. It's a tragic, yet inspiring book.

A Treasure-Trove of War-Related Information: What to Discuss?
By Jan Peczkis
This review expands an earlier one. Consider first the Passover 1940 pogrom: "The Germans incited the Poles to attack the Jews and those attacks were filmed, with the Nazis playing the saviors of the Jews against the Poles." (p. 40).

Relative to the "resettlements" to Treblinka, Zuckerman faulted the tardiness of militant Jewish counteraction: "Our blame is that we could have delayed the sentence, we could have forced them to bring 10,000 Germans to do the work done by 2,000 to 3,000 Jewish police." (p. 209). The Germans would've used firearms, causing massive bloodshed, and thereby inducing more Jews to resist or escape instead of obediently boarding the death trains.

The retrieval of usable 1939-war weaponry for the Polish and Jewish Undergrounds wasn't straightforward: "With the defeat of the Polish Army, groups of Poles or individual Polish soldiers tried to hide weapons in woods and hiding places, and only they knew where they were hidden. Sometimes weapons were hidden near some village where the peasants were afraid to give them to Poles or partisans, because giving weapons to the enemies of the Germans was a death sentence on the whole village since the Germans applied collective responsibility. And there was always somebody, who, out of cowardice or obsequiousness, would tell the Germans where the weapons were. The ordinary person didn't keep weapons because that jeopardized himself, his family, and his courtyard. And everyone was afraid his friend or neighbor would denounce him." (pp. 252-253). Zuckerman's statements debunk the double-standard arguments, advanced against Poles (e. g., by Jan T. Gross), regarding risk-taking, denunciation, and neighbors'-silence, relative to hiding Jews vis-à-vis Underground involvement.

Zuckerman doesn't trivialize Polish aid to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (p. 292) despite his obvious anti-ZZW bias (e. g., pp. 410-412. However, he admits the existence of Iwenski/Iwanski). He presents a middle view of the extent of ZOB-Communist entanglement (p. 184, 360), though he also exhibits a rosy and undiscerning view of the Communist GL/AL (p. 362, 373, esp. p. 459, 502, and 525). He admits trying to hide his contacts with the GL/AL from the AK (Home Army)(p. 339).

As for the "balance sheet", Zuckerman comments: "I said honestly [in 1945] and I repeat it today: to cause the death of one hundred Jews, all you needed was one Polish denouncer; to save one Jew, it sometimes took the help of ten decent Poles, the help of an entire Polish family; even if they did it for money." (p. 461). And, while in gentile Warsaw, Zuckerman encountered as many Jewish denouncers as Polish ones. (p. 493).

Recounting the hardships under the German occupation, Zuckerman, unlike the Yad Vashem policy, appreciates even the paid Polish aid to Jews. (p. 461). And, realizing that devout Jews would've done the same, he doesn't despise those Polish rescuers who attempted to convert Jews. (p. 493).

Contrary to SOPHIE'S CHOICE, the Endeks never contemplated, let alone advocated, the extermination of Jews. (p. 437). Poles, except the fringe element, didn't rejoice when the Warsaw Ghetto burned--to the contrary. (p. 374, 393).

Zuckerman closely observed the Polish Warsaw Uprising (1944). He commented: "To the credit of the Poles, they were brave people who stuck to their guns. I didn't see any panic or running away." (p. 538). "When I was in the Old City, I didn't sense anti-Semitism even once, neither from the civilian population nor from the AK; the opposite was true." (p. 561). "Soviet officers who had been at Stalingrad said that Warsaw was the most destroyed city in Europe." (p. 560).

The 1946 Kielce Pogrom wasn't spontaneous: "The pogrom struck Jews in a radius of dozens of kilometers around Kielce--on the same day and at the same time, Jews were taken off trains and murdered...the day before the pogrom members of the UB and militia had come and collected weapons from the Jews...[who] now had nothing to defend themselves with!" (p. 661). [The shooting from inside the Jewish compound came from the UB, obviously to further inflame the crowd against the Jews.]

Remarkably Informative, Detailed, and Not Anti-Polish
By Jan Peczkis
Yitzhak Zuckerman's (Cukierman's) fabulous book stands out in stark contrast to much of the superficial and distorted material that is so often used in Holocaust education. Then again, he was an eyewitness, so he should know. Unlike the anti-Polish slant of most Holocaust educational material, Zuckerman finds much good and bad in both nationalities, and repeatedly sternly warns those who would espouse hatred for Poles. He also has high praises for Zegota, the Polish underground organization that rescued thousands of Jews. Zuckerman is unusually frank and candid in telling the full story of what happened during this cruel time. For instance, Holocaust films invariably show the collaborationist Polish blue police, but not the Jewish ghetto police. Zuckerman, on the other hand, makes it obvious that it was the Jewish collaborationist police which inflicted more of the sufferings on the imprisoned Jews. Most Holocaust materials only show Poles who would betray Jews to the Nazis, while Zuckerman surprises the reader by pointing out that he was just as frequently accosted by Jewish blackmailers as Polish ones. Unlike the movie Schindler's List, which showed a Polish girl cheering as Jews were deported, Zuckerman recounts a diametrically-oppposite personal experience as an incognito Jew (with false documents expertly made by the Polish underground) on the Aryan side of Warsaw. As the Warsaw Ghetto was being burned by the Germans, very few Poles rejoiced, and these were primarily from the criminal element. Zuckerman found that many Poles cried as they saw the ghetto burn. Zuckerman also acknowledges that Jews were disproportionately involved in Communism, and this was a major factor which provoked Polish anti-Semitism, including the murder of surviving Jews who returned to reclaim their property after the war. Finally, Zuckerman spends considerable space detailing the many German crimes against Polish gentiles, something which Holocaust materials rarely do in depth, if at all. A superb book!

The Taoist Body, by Kristofer Schipper

The ancient system of thought known as Taoism remains today the least well known of the world's great religions and one of the most inaccessible aspects of Chinese culture. This is in large part because Western thought clings to the notion of the separation of matter and spirit, body and soul. Taoism refuses this dualism and considers the body's perfection as essential as the soul's redemption is to Christianity.

Kristofer Schipper's elegant and lucid introduction to the traditions of Taoism and the masters who transmit them will reward all those interested in China and in religions. The result of over twenty-five years of research, including eight years of fieldwork in China, Schipper's book retraces, step by step, the way that leads from Chinese shamanism and traditional village life to the physical Tending Life techniques, which in turn lead to the mysticism of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu. Schipper shows the fundamental unity underlying all aspects of Taoism as Taoism considers itself to be. The social body—the community, the village, the land—corresponds in all aspects to the physical body in Taoism. In both of them the survival of humanity is decided here and now. "My destiny is within me, not in Heaven!"

A good scholarly overview of Taoism...
By Zentao
Schipper is one of the few of European descent to ever become an ordained Taoist priest. This gives him a unique view on some of the history and practices of Taoism but there are some caveats to be noted.
The book provides a good contextual overview of many facets of the culture that gave rise to Taoism. Schipper makes a number of interesting points regarding the general culture and Taoist practices including the so-called 'bedroom manuals'. Also included are some good points about gender issues and Taoism as well as his take on some of the Taoist legends and past masters. There are short chapters outlining Qigong and the practice of cultivation which include some very good (although short) translations of some of the more famous Taoist canons. There is also a great overview of the whole cereal abstinence debate as well as some thoughts on Taoist external alchemy that I found quite interesting. There is a good (although too short, IMHO) overview on Taoist hermits and why the took to the mountains.
All of this is presented in quite a scholarly manner, more in line with a true reference book than many others available right now. This is both good and bad, in my opinion. That is, we should remember that "the Tao that is spoken of is not the true Tao". Schipper needs to be taken with a large 'grain of salt' since obviously his 'version' of the Tao is dependent on his master's lineage. There is a reason there are so many 'flavours' of Taoism and that has to do with the fact that, ultimately, cultivation is an extremely personal past time!
So there are many aspects that are missing and possibly misleading here. Bigu (or even fasting) is not really mentioned, probably because it is not part of his sect's way. His overview on 'bedroom manuals' is interesting but that is not to say it is the 'truth' - answering something like that is ultimately a personal journey and all the spoken and written material is ultimately just a finger pointing at the moon. The same goes for everything else in the book - just one man's opinion. If he is truly practising the Way and cultivating daily then I suspect he will need to rewrite this book every year (or few months).
Anyway, definitely worth reading and some good ideas. As always, your focus on practice will ultimately determine your path.

An excellent well researched book on practical Taoism in China.
By Being
The book itself is delightful to read. It is well researched and, where references to popular rituals within China appear to differ from a pure Taoist tradition the writer points this out. I like that as I have a perception of what Taoist might mean so it is reassuring to have my opinion upheld.
The delivery and condition of the book was excellent.

No Aging in India: Alzheimer's, The Bad Family, and Other Modern Things, by Lawrence Cohen

From the opening sequence, in which mid-nineteenth-century Indian fishermen hear the possibility of redemption in an old woman's madness, No Aging in India captures the reader with its interplay of story and analysis. Drawing on more than a decade of ethnographic work, Lawrence Cohen links a detailed investigation of mind and body in old age in four neighborhoods of the Indian city of Varanasi (Banaras) with events and processes around India and around the world. This compelling exploration of senility—encompassing not only the aging body but also larger cultural anxieties—combines insights from medical anthropology, psychoanalysis, and postcolonial studies. Bridging literary genres as well as geographic spaces, Cohen responds to what he sees as the impoverishment of both North American and Indian gerontologies—the one mired in ambivalence toward demented old bodies, the other insistent on a dubious morality tale of modern families breaking up and abandoning their elderly. He shifts our attention irresistibly toward how old age comes to matter in the constitution of societies and their narratives of identity and history.

Review
""No Aging in India deserves to be a classic in the anthropological literature on aging." --John Van Willigen, "Medical Anthropology Quarterly

From the Inside Flap
"Beautifully written, erudite, a perfect balance between theory and ethnography. The narratives are wonderful."—E. Valentine Daniel, author of Charred Lullabies

"No book in medical anthropology matches No Aging in India in its extraordinary richness of ethnographic detail. A feast of stories, lives, and theory--it contains such a thickness of social experience that the reader feels he or she has become a part of India's local worlds. Lawrence Cohen has written one of the finest ethnographic monographs I have read. A triumph of field research and writing, this book will, I feel sure, set the standard for the next wave of ethnographies in medical anthropology."—Arthur Kleinman, author of Writing at the Margin

Approachable, yet profound
By D. Liu
As a medical student beginning research on Alzheimer's disease, this book provided me a deeper understanding of the full ramifications of such a disease on the lives of the patient and family members. The interactions described in this book are really quite complicated, yet the clear writing and organization makes this subject matter approachable.

Brilliant ethnographic research fused with engaging narrative that makes for truly enjoyable reading. Cohen dissects the phenomenon of an aging population and their role in culture and society, while explaining the greater implications both for policy and popular opinion, with reflections on US and Western societies.
