The Poethical Wager, by Joan Retallack

In these highly inventive essays, Joan Retallack, acclaimed poet and essayist, conveys her unique post-utopian vision as she explores the relationship between art and life in today's chaotic world. In the tradition of the essay as complex humanist exploration, she engages ideas from across history: Aristotle's definition of happiness, Epicurus's swerve into unpredictable possibility, Montaigne's essays as an instrument of self-invention, John Cage's redefinition of Silence. Within her unifying rubric of poethics, Retallack gives the reader plenty of surprises with a wonderful range of examples, situations, and texts through which she conducts her exploration. A computer glitch, a passage from Gertrude Stein's favorite detective novelist, the idea of the experimental feminine, a John Cage performance—all serve as occasions for inquiry and speculation on the way to her poethics of a "complex realism."

Review
"In this very coherent collection of essays, Retallack goes a long way toward constructing meaning out of the restlessness and anxiety that characterize postmodern art. The result is a strong affirmation of the imagination--and, in way, an affirmation of affirmation itself. The book is powerful and beautiful."

From the Inside Flap
"In this very coherent collection of essays, Retallack goes a long way toward constructing meaning out of the restlessness and anxiety that characterize postmodern art. The result is a strong affirmation of the imagination—and, in a way, an affirmation of affirmation itself. The book is powerful and beautiful."—Lyn Hejinian

"Joan Retallack is a thinker of refreshing clarity, frankness and drive, with a wily, engaged intelligence. This remarkable book of her speculative essays is at once a dynamic conceptual art work and an artistically subtle probing of concepts. Retallack has produced a witty, penetrating work that raises the stakes of poetics with her commitment to a utopian ethics of lucidity, attentiveness, responsibility, and hope."—Rachel Blau DuPlessis, author of Drafts 1-38, Toll and The Pink Guitar: Writing as Feminist Practice

"Joan Retallack shows not why but how poetry matters in these fractal provocations in, around, and through Cage, Stein, Waldrop, Wittgenstein, Winnicott, and a large supporting cast that potentially includes you. Retallack's "newsense" turns knowledge into nowledge, weaving words into thought's improbable possibilities."—Charles Bernstein, author of Republics of Reality: 1975-1995

"Joan Retallack is our supreme theoretician of poetic contingency. With great patience, profundity, and good humor, she lays out a 'poetics of the swerve,' a 'constructive preoccupation with what are unpredictable forms of change.' Whether writing about Gertrude Stein or John Cage, or feeling her way to a more adequate 'feminism'--a feminism that refuses to close off the possibilities of chance and change--Retallack 'essays' toward a 'poethics' that, in Wittgensteinian terms, 'leaves everything as it is' so as to dis-cover what it might be. "—Marjorie Perloff, author of Wittgenstein's Ladder

"Retallack has a deliciously complicated sense of the world, which combines with superb tact and an unpretentious but imposing sense that she is making a poethical wager at every moment in the writing, especially in her sense of the tension between memory and 'productive conjecture'.This is one of the most cogent and capacious rationales for experimental poetics that I have read."—Charles Altieri, author of Painterly Abstraction in Modernist American Poetry and Postmodernisms Now

This book is beautifully written. I have never seen such a positive approach to the chaos of the current cultural environment. Every paragraph is a gem, and takes the reader step by step deeper into a whole new prism of meaning. My heart warms just thinking about it.

From Publishers Weekly
Revisiting the highlands of Papua New Guinea where he had done anthropological fieldwork some 30 years agothe basis of his earlier The High ValleyRead found that Westernization has brought mixed blessings to the Gahuku, the adventurous, warm Melanesian people with whom he lived. Antagonism and distance between the sexes have eased up. More relaxed sexual mores now prevail, and young women may meet men at the "disco" tavern or in the marketplace. The "six to six," a dance that lasts from 6 p.m. until the following morning, is a popular event. The manly nama cult, with its flute music and climactic rituals glorifying masculinity, has vanished. Women now receive education along with men, travel freely and openly oppose male social controls. Yet Read worries about what he considers misguided attempts to graft fundamentalist Christianity onto this culture, and he envisages a marginal, impoverished position for the Gahuku in the world economy. Part memoir, part field report, this is an affectionate portrait of a people in the turmoil of social change.

From Library Journal
Read's The High Valley (1965) is an anthropological classic. In it he tells not only of a New Guinea Highlands people, but of his complex personal relations with them. In this sequel, he reports on his 1981-82 return to what is now the nation of Papua New Guinea, 31 years after his first stay. He manages to convey the same eloquent sense of place and people that made his first book so poignant. He tells of the changes three decades have wrought in New Guinea and in the lives of his friends. Once again he shows us, in a way few authors have been able to duplicate, the intenseand extraordinaryquality of the anthropologist's life "in the field." This will be equally valuable to professional and student. Glenn Petersen, Sociology & Anthropology Dept., Baruch Coll., CUNY

The

In the years between the world wars, Manhattan's Fourteenth Street-Union Square district became a center for commercial, cultural, and political activities, and hence a sensitive barometer of the dramatic social changes of the period. It was here that four urban realist painters—Kenneth Hayes Miller, Reginald Marsh, Raphael Soyer, and Isabel Bishop—placed their images of modern "new women." Bargain stores, cheap movie theaters, pinball arcades, and radical political organizations were the backdrop for the women shoppers, office and store workers, and consumers of mass culture portrayed by these artists. Ellen Wiley Todd deftly interprets the painters' complex images as they were refracted through the gender ideology of the period.

This is a work of skillful interdisciplinary scholarship, combining recent insights from feminist art history, gender studies, and social and cultural theory. Drawing on a range of visual and verbal representations as well as biographical and critical texts, Todd balances the historical context surrounding the painters with nuanced analyses of how each artist's image of womanhood contributed to the continual redefining of the "new woman's" relationships to men, family, work, feminism, and sexuality.

From Library Journal
Interpreting the paintings of four artists who worked in the area and observed the daily inhabitants, Todd presents the plight of women as shoppers, sales clerks, and office workers on 14th Street in New York between the two world wars. Considering time and place, it is a natural combination that the author handles deftly. Biographies of the artists Kenneth Hayes Miller (the oldest of the group and an early influence on the others), Reginald Marsh, Raphael Soyer, and Isabel Bishop are contrasted and critiqued in light of their own backgrounds and beliefs. Eight color plates and 150 black-and-white illustrations display a rich assemblage of their work and also serve the text's discussion of the changing conception of "new woman," from the 1890s Gibson girl to later flappers and sirens. Women's history collections will need this wholly absorbing study, which also provides a well-documented resource for art criticism of the urban realists and a view of New York's working class.

Review of art, artists, and influence of cultural backgrounds on feminism and its development during the 1930s, .
By Priscilla Ciccariello
I found this book provides an unusual and interesting look at art before it became merchandized and exploded in value. It looks at the influence of the artist in identifying what to paint and how and why - rather than just a pretty picture or a design object for interior decoration. Focuses on New York City in Depression. Scholarly work, with am impressive amount of research with pictures reproduced not commonly or easily found.

A CRITICAL STUDY OF THE THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT, BY A FORMER ADHERENT
By Steven H Propp
When this book was published in 1980, author Bruce Campbell was "for several years a member of Nature of the Soul, a theosophically related meditation group, [and] has taught religion at Indiana University and at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he is currently affiliated with the Institute of Religious Studies."

He wrote in the Preface, "This book appears at a time when the relation between the Theosophical movement and American society is changing. The movement has been outside the religious mainstream ... since it was founded... With the recent rise of interest in Asian and nontraditional religions, however, Theosophy has taken on a new aura. It is a 'grandfather' movement, the precessor by a century of today's interest in non-Judeo-Christian religions. As such, it has a new respectability... This book... views appreciatively the contributions of the Theosophical movement to culture and society; on the other hand, it discusses Theosophy's problems and inner conflicts... This book is an attempt to use the tools of the scholar to understand and to lay a foundation for the improvement of the tradition expressed in the Theosophical movement." (Pg. vii-viii)

He notes that Helena Petrovna Blavatsky "lived a life that could perhaps best be called Bohemian. During this quarter century, she apparently had a familarity with 'hasheesh'... And there is considerable evidence pointing to a long-term affair with the itenerant opera singer Agardi Metrovich. Several independent sources report Helena was known as Madame Metrovich and that she and Metrovich lived together for several periods over a considerable number of years in Italy, the Middle East, and Russia. There is evidence she had liaisons with other men as well." (Pg. 5)

He points out, "The term 'theosophy,' meaning divine wisdom, had become common in the seventeenth century. It was used to refer to the strain of the occult, mystical speculation associated with the Kabala and with the writings of ... occultists..." (Pg. 28)

On the charge of plagiarism leveled against Blavatsky, he wrote, "A sample of several dozen of the alleged plagiarisms were checked ... In every case, I found the passage from Isis [Revealed] verbatim in the source given... Many of these quotations wer of a single sentence... One might argue that the total is a small amount of a two-volume work that runs to many hundred pages, or that her unattributed borrowing was consistent with some nineteenth century standards of attribution. Still, the number two thousand suggests plagiarism on a large scale and... challenges the Theosophical interpretation of the sources of Madame Blavatsky's writings." (Pg. 34)

He suggests, "There was a great deal of circumstantial evidence suggesting that Madame Blavatsky was responsible for the Mahatma letters. Most of the letters were written on a peculiar sort of handmade rice paper. Col. Olcott reported Madame Blavatsky always carried a supply of it with her, and a Russian friend ... once found a packet of envelopes of this paper in a drawer of her writing table. Several handwriting experts testified that most of the Mahatma letters were written by Madame Blavatsky herself... There is no doubt that the tone and style of the letters closely resemble those of H.P.B.'s writing... the letters are full of expressions... that appear frequently in the acknowledged writings of Madame Blavatsky... All these factors point to Madame Blavatsky... as the probable author." (Pg. 57-58)

He observes, "Another source of doubt about the existence of the Masters lies in the contradiction between their alleged omniscience and the inconsistencies in Theosophical teaching. As noted earlier, the doctrine of reincarnation appears in all major Theosophical writings after about 1880, but Isis Unveiled, which purports to present the same ancient, universal wisdom-religion and to be derived from the Masters... does not teach reincarnation." (Pg. 60)

He details the controversy over Charles Leadbeater's role in instructing young boys: "The admissions left him open to prosecution under the criminal laws of both England and the United States. By a split vote, the Council recommended acceptance of Leadbeater's resignation." (Pg. 116)

This book will greatly interest those looking for more history about the Theosophical Society.

Project Girl, by Janet McDonald

Selected by The Los Angeles Times Book Review as one of the best books of the year, Project Girl is the powerful account of a young woman's struggle to realize her dreams while remaining true to who she was before attending Ivy League schools and receiving impressive diplomas. It tells of the spectacular failures and unlikely comebacks of a ghetto kid whose academic talent opens doors onto a world of private schools, rich classmates, and plum jobs but who back home confronts a neighborhood of growing poverty, drug abuse, and crime. Project Girl is McDonald's story of her divided life and terrible battle to reconcile opposing worlds.

From Publishers Weekly
This rather unstructured memoir certainly contains high drama, but it doesn't quite succeed in illuminating the larger social issues?race, class, education, identity?to which it implicitly points. McDonald, the gifted child of an "old-fashioned" black family (hardworking father, tireless at-home mom) living in a Brooklyn housing project, was a "nerd" in the projects but an alienated "project girl" in the more privileged world to which her academic achievement earned her entry. She made it to Vassar in the early 1970s only to become a heroin user, but righted herself (especially during a junior year abroad in Paris) in time to enter law school. She was shattered again when she was raped, after which she expressed her rage by setting fires in her law school dorm. She returned to school and now practices law in her beloved Paris. However gripping and potentially instructive this mix of harrowing and inspirational facts are, the telling is awkward. While McDonald portrays her post-rape torment with graphic intensity, her self-analysis?especially of her heroin problem?are shallow. Her writing is fluid?so fluid that it's shame that she relies on so many previously written journal excerpts that chronicle not only her progress at work but also her mood swings, off-the-cuff remarks ("We may have a woman Vice-President!") and ideological natterings unbuttressed by thoughtful argument ("America's corporate structure... is responsible for each and every individual moment of suffering"). Despite these flaws, readers will find in these pages a spirited challenge to the idea that upward mobility is easy or comes without a heavy psychological cost.

From Library Journal
Now practicing law in Paris, McDonald was raised in the projects of Brooklyn, NY, in the midst of poverty, drug abuse, and violence. This is the wrenching story of her escape from that life to Vassar, Columbia, and then to NYU Law School and the personal crises she surmounted along the way.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Anger-filled memoirs, partly straight narrative and partly excerpts from a journal, of a professional black woman whose journey from a low-income housing project in Brooklyn to a law office in Paris is replete with violence, hostility, and alienation. McDonald, the middle of seven children, was singled out early as gifted. She recounts how a supportive program at Harlem Prep gained her admission to Vassar. Here, in a WASP world far from her family in the projects, her feelings of fear and isolation led her to heroin. Fortunately, Vassar provided counseling, sent her home on medical leave, and readmitted her the next year. She spent her junior year in Paris, meeting blacks from all parts of the world and having some of her racial and cultural stereotypes shattered. Law school at Cornell followed, but her academic career was again interrupted, this time by a vicious rape followed by a nervous breakdown. At New York University, where she transferred, McDonald, still filled with fear and obsessed with homicidal and suicidal urges, was arrested for arson. Ousted from NYU, she went to the Columbia School of Journalism, where she interned at both a French press agency in Paris (where people are ``full of life, not ambition'') and at Newsweek in New York (where she felt like ``an overeducated slave on the bottom of the white patriarch's totem pole''). Abandoning journalism, McDonald reapplied to NYU and, at age 32, graduated from law school. However, living in a Manhattan high-rise and working in a midtown corporate law office was misery for her, and her weekends were spent back at the projects in Brooklyn. ``I no longer belong in the projects, but still to them,'' her journal notes. Eventually, McDonald moved to France, abandoning the US and her struggle to belong. Powerful and painful reminder of the enormous gap between the culture of an inner-city black ghetto and middle-class white Americaone so wide that education alone cannot be counted on to bridge it. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. This book should be required reading for America!
By jackie
Project Girl is one of the best (if not the best book) I have read. I am from the projects and share a similar background to Janet. At the age of 40 I still did not understand some of the anger and responses I had toward people of more advantaged backgrounds, but Janet's book gave voice to many of my feelings and insecurities. It is difficult for people from more priviledged backgrounds to understand that the issue for poor blacks is more than just a matter of race. It is also a matter of class and we have had to learn to adjust to our difference in class, race and (sometimes) gender. When you are a project girl, you are trying to overcome all three! We have had to compete with others who started the race with more book knowledge and elite training at the same time that we have to learn new jobs or attend school. For example, Janet was exceptionally smart, but in high school the teachers never told her about writing footnotes. Something so basic to everyone else from better schools, but something she had to learn after she enter an elite college. I only wish she could have told us more about her life after her move to Paris. I read Project Girl the same week that I read "Trespassing" by Gwen Parker. What a difference! In Trespassing you have a black woman of immense priviledge who doesn't seem to acknowledge how all of her priviledge helped get her to the top. In Project Girl you have a black woman who gets to the top despite all of the class, family, color and gender issues. It is not a pretty story and Janet was in fact self-destructive, but having come from her world and been immersed into elite, white and male-dominated environments with absolutely no training or mentoring, I completed understand her actions. I am proud that she managed to overcome them. If you are a project girl: read this book, if you are a priviledged black person: read this book, if you are from any other group: read this book.

A stunning, transformative, clear-eyed war story
By Bernestine Singley
Project Girl. There are millions of us, but very few will ever experience the convergences necessary to get our story in print. Some of that has to do with our rush to forget the trek from grits-to-Gucci, an understandable if sad price to pay for living life as a corporate makeover.
But thank God, Janet MacDonald didn't forget a thing. And her buzz saw of a mind sent chips flying to hell and back to present us with a story so gripping, I often found myself holding my breath long after the sentence had ended.
Even the most casual reader can understand this tale of wars: the one where Janet constantly squares off against her self; the one where she jousts interminably with the self she showed to others; the wars with forces beyond, as well as those completely within, her control. Sometimes vanished, sometimes victor, she never asks you to feel sorry for her even when she faces the horror every woman on earth lives in fear of. And, yet, the only time she sinks to a blame fest is when she repeatedly skewers some mental health practitioners of arguably questionable skill.
PROJECT GIRL is a straight ahead rendering of one brilliant black woman's mottled life in these United States of America. And that is, perhaps, the most incredible gift of this outpouring: not MacDonald as Role-Model-for-All-Corporate Wannabes, not MacDonald as Queen-of-the-Up-by-My-Boostraps-Crew, not MacDonald as some Over-the-Rainbow-See-How-I-Slew-my-Demons-all-by-Myself, but MacDonald as human, flawed, honestly laying out a personal, story of race, gender, class, and, yes, politics.
In fact, that's precisely how PROJECT GIRL escapes being "just a memoir." It is so refreshingly clear and purposefully disturbing as it peels back the layers of race, class, gender and power that make up all our daily life. By the time MacDonald is through with us, we are completely exhausted and all we did was watch.
In the end, we have peeped the inner workings of a whole range of hallowed institutions--from the nuclear family, to wealthy college campuses, to elite workplaces, to the criminal justice system, to the mental health industry. MacDonald's is an irreverent, relentless, priceless eye.
PROJECT GIRL is a triumphant beginning. The rest of this story has yet to be told and is definitely worth waiting for.

Obvious and not-so-obvious
By A Customer
After one writes that, with the publication of Project Girl, Janet McDonald has thrust herself into the company of James Baldwin and Angela Davis, then one must consider what other associations suit the book. It is easy to read but so hard to forget. The writing is pellucid. One gets an incredible sense of who McDonald is and what she has been through, without detecting any of the artifice that people usually call "style". Her style is her voice, simple as that. McDonald's book, a memoir, in coming out in the memoir-rampant post-Angela's Ashes era, has been criticized for being just another up-from-the-bottom story. Yet Frank McCourt himself wrote that Project Girl "should be placed on all high school and college reading lists and offered to anyone looking for a book beautifully written." Leafing through Project Girl for one more of the countless times I have searched it for some morsel of understanding or attitude, I discover once again that each sentence is no more and no less than a small portion contributing to the entirety of this beautiful, difficult, yearning story. It does not matter that the story is true. That it is true should make us shudder. But how do we Americans classify the book? McDonald lives in Paris now, and she might shudder to know. Project Girl does not rest on the shelf. It sticks to the mind. You can't shelve it. Every time you think you have the story down ("okay, she grew up in the Farragut Houses projects in Brooklyn, got it, terrible things there, strong family, okay-this experience-some racism, off to college" etc.) a sticky part in the story such as her brief foray into the world of the child prophet Guru Maharaj Ji will throw you off. She is an incredible person and her genius just to pull herself up time after time-a necessary genius to the chronically voiceless-is, if only commended and admired, the victim this time of condescension. It is as difficult to say what this book really is as it is difficult to deal with the seething, subtle and not-so-subtle problems that are chronicled within it. But it is also warm, forgiving and funny. It will resonate with the reader's experiences long, long after s/he has put it down.

From Publishers Weekly
Clegg (From a Louisiana Kitchen) keeps it simple and quick here with easy-to-prepare recipes from her own kitchen. In many cases, she relies on canned soups and broths, frozen vegetables and cake mixes, which may be a turn-off to cooks looking for meals with pizzazz or hoping to steer clear of preservatives. Nevertheless, Clegg offers a variety of modified family favorites ranging from Creamy Noodle Casserole, made with nonfat sour cream, low-fat cottage cheese and reduced-fat Cheddar, to Quick Beef Stew, made with beef round, no-salt-added beef broth and light beer. A list of menus precedes the recipes, which are organized in chapters by course (Appetizers) or main ingredient (Seafood and Fish). Recipes come with nutritional analyses that require readers to refer to food-exchange tables in the back of the book for such information as carbohydrate value. An additional complication is that the analysis for some recipes doesn't match the serving sizes, e.g., while the serving size of a football-season Hamburger Dip is suggested to be slightly less than half a cup,the analysis is per tablespoon. Among the many low-fat cookbooks available, Clegg's will be valued most for those times when speed and convenience are the cook's top priority. From Booklist
What will appeal to home chefs is Clegg's insistence on creating more than 250 low-fat dishes that are fast and convenient and use packaged, frozen, or ready-to-mix ingredients. Her directions read like a combination of Betty Crocker and supermarket specials--all of them, though, include detailed nutritional analyses. Barbara Jacobs

Fantastic tasting recipes
By A Customer
My refrigerator and cupboard always has the ingredients for the recipes in this cookbook. Most of the recipes have the same basics to them so I don't have to go out and buy a lot of different ingredients.
I in no way enjoy cooking so I'm not exactly in practice, but I can impress my husband of 3 years everytime I cook something from this cookbook. Every recipe has so much flavor. I love this cookbook. I can't wait to get Ms. Clegg's other books.

I'm in the process of collecting all of Holly Clegg's books! This one tones down the fat in some home cooking favorites! A must have for anyone trying to eat healthy or just improve their lifestyle. The recipes are fantastic - all dishes you've heard of and contain nothing you have to make a special trip to the grocery store to buy! Holly is definitely on the right track!!

Good Recipes--to much alcohol
By T. Wootten
The majority of the recipes in this cookbook are good and use "normal" ingredients. One flaw and this is not listed anywhere in the reviews is that a large number of the recipes call for alcohol. I believe this is an important piece of information that should be brought to buyers attention. Some people can not cook using alcohol.

From Publishers Weekly
A century after Darwin theorized that we descended from ape-like ancestors, science has in just the last two decades contrived an awesome description of our even more primordial development from microbes. Boston University biologist Margulis and science writer Sagan here produce a stunning, complex chronicle of those four billion years, from Hadean and Archaeon aeons when matter became "animated" and the mysteries we now call DNA and RNA became "the language of nature," to the first appearances of plant and animal life, including hominids. So immensely detailed is this elucidation of the developing microcosm (with its emphasis on natural selection and symbiosis in the bacterial world) that even advanced science readers will find the book difficult. But it is an important one, a comprehensive, popularized treatment of evolutionary microbiology spelling out a dimension that Darwin possibly never imagined, and proposing that only an understanding of the microcosm from which life sprang can make possible our ultimate leap beyond Earth into a human-devised supercosm. From Library Journal
Beginning with the chemistry of "minimal life," Margulis details the contributions of the microbial world to the evolution of life on our planet. Much of this book focuses on the role of symbiosis in cell evolution, one of the most important contemporary evolutionary concepts. Concluding chapters discuss man's place in our present ecosystem, our continued dependence on microorganisms, and our debt to our humble microbial origins for the way our physiology functions. No other book for the lay reader or interested professional interprets this material as thoroughly or accurately. Margulis, a respected authority in this field, is the author of Symbiosis in Cell Evolution , an advanced text. Highly recommended. On microbes: the real rulers of the planet.
By Ruth Henriquez Lyon
Microcosmos is a natural history of the unseen beings upon whom we depend every moment for survival: the microbes. Margulis, who is currently Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Massachusetts, did undergraduate work in biology and received her PhD in Genetics. She worked with James Lovelock on developing the Gaia theory, which posits that the earth can be regarded as a sort of super-organism. In Microcosmos we see all aspects of her education and sensibilities -- a close attention to scientific detail and a "big picture" approach to how living entities coexist.
In the introduction she lays out her philosophy about life on earth, for which she was roundly criticized by many reductionist scientists. In the past, she writes, all life on Earth was traditionally studied as being merely a prelude to the appearance of humans. Now, overwhelming evidence suggests that microbes (one-celled organisms) not only inhabit every known living thing on earth, they are also indispensable to the survival of all living things. They, not human beings, are the most important beings on the planet.
Furthermore, in opposition to one of the most accepted tenets of Neo-Darwinism, Margulis states that life did not colonize the planet by competition so much as by networking. Cooperation between one-celled creatures led, over billions of years, to the evolution of beings such as ourselves, who possess the capability for self-conscious awareness. Our human consciousness, of which we are so proud, "may have been born of the concerted capacities of millions of microbes that evolved symbiotically to become the human brain."
Strong words! Yet, Margulis sets forth compelling evidence in the remainder of her book to support her bio-philosophical ideas. Along the way, we learn many amazing things. For instance, we get a perspective on what upstart newcomers we are: the continents we inhabit now appeared in their present locations only in the last tenth of a percent of Earth's history. We learn that bacteria invented genetic engineering. Thus, when ultraviolet light damaged early microbes' DNA, the creatures produced repair enzymes to remove the damaged portions and copy new replacement DNA. This is a natural form of gene splicing.
Sometimes, the DNA used in gene splicing was borrowed from neighboring bacteria of different strains, thus affording these critters a prodigious adaptability. This borrowing still goes on today. Through intermediaries, two very different bacteria can share genetic information. Why is this important? Because it allows the distribution of genetic information in the microcosm with a speed "approaching that of modern telecommunications--if the complexity and biological value of the information being transferred is factored in." This speed makes bacteria the biosphere's first responders in dealing with planetary changes.
In responding to change, bacteria end up altering and shaping their environments. Few people realize that the entire earth's atmosphere, which we depend on for our life's breath, was created, and is maintained, by microbes. This is a good thing to remember next time you feel like spraying down your bathroom or kitchen with anti-microbial spray. Our fear of bacteria is misplaced. Yes, some are harmful to us, but most are beneficial. Indeed they are a lot more helpful to us than we are to the rest of the planet!
This book isn't an easy read, but it will broaden one's outlook on our place in the natural world. Even if bacteria are not in the end responsible for the intricacies of our human brain and consciousness, we still owe them many debts. This book unveils the smallness of humans before the vast and minute workings of nature, and encourages a sense of humility before the greater Life that surrounds us.
