Glaciers of California: Modern Glaciers, Ice Age Glaciers, the Origin of Yosemite Valley, and a Glacier Tour in the Sierra Nevada (Californ

Glaciers in sunny California? Many people will be surprised to learn that there are several hundred in this state, ranging in size from the impressive Whitney Glacier on Mt. Shasta and the Palisade Glacier in the Sierra Nevada to tiny glacierets. While California's glaciers are small compared to those in the northern Rockies or the European Alps, each one is interesting and some are suitable for exploring. Also of note is the fact that Ice Age glaciers carved California's most spectacular mountain scenery—the High Sierra was glaciated several times and glacial landforms are prominent features of the Sierran landscape today.

Bill Guyton summarizes the history of the discovery of Ice Age glaciation and modern-day glaciers in California, as well as the development of modern ideas about the state's glacial history. He describes the controversy about the origin of Yosemite Valley and quotes from the colorful accounts of early mountain explorers such as John Muir, Josiah Whitney, and François Matthes. His book provides a primer on glaciers and glacial landforms, a glossary of technical terms, helpful illustrations, and a 100-mile Sierra field trip guide for readers who want to see glaciers and glacial features for themselves. Glaciers of California will make any visit to the mountains more interesting, whether one is carrying a camera, crampons, or a fishing pole.

Review
"I heartily recommend this book to anyone as an introduction to glaciers and glaciation in California. It presents a concise yet broad treatment of the topic in a clear, engaging style that builds a foundation of knowledge for reading more advanced literature. The advanced reader will be hard pressed to find a better organized synthesis of this material and should benefit from the historical context it provides and its numerous citations to other literature. Anyone should find the book a pleasure to read."--L. Allan James, "Geotimes

"This book gives all California mountain lovers another reason to head for the hills. Guyton explains in layman's terms the subtle differences between glaciers, glacierets, and permanent snowfields . . . and takes us on a superlative 'glacier tour' of Yosemite National Park. This is a great addition to the mountain literature of the Golden State."—Steve Roper, author of Sierra High Route

"Geologist Bill Guyton explains clearly how glaciers work, how they form and move and what they do to the landscape. With excellent illustrations . . . this book is an eye-opener."—Mary Hill, author of Geology of the Sierra Nevada

He transforms today's icy relics on the shadowed heights of the Golden State into crystalline visions of a very different past--and perhaps future--when global cooling reigned over the highlands."—Galen Rowell, photographer, author of Poles Apart

Great reference and read for California high country travelers
By C. Ryan
This is the most interesting and useful book on California glaciers, particularly in the High Sierra, that I have come across.

Author Bill Guyton is a Cal State Chico emeritus geology professor who has apparently done glacier field work, especially in the Palisades region, but the book is well written in a manner accessible to anyone with an interest in the topic.

Besides the general (apparently conventional but still evolving) history of California's Ice Age glaciations, a topic covered in a number of books on the Sierra, Guyton focuses on the details of prior epochs' alpine glaciations - the lower Northern California mountains and the southernmost documented glaciers that occurred in the San Gabriel Mountains just east of Los Angeles.

The most interesting section for hikers is Guyton's inventory of current high country glaciers on Mt. Shasta, in the High Sierra and some tiny ones in the Trinity Alps. Reviewing the calculations of other geologist and applying his own knowledge and definitions Guyton determines there are currently (as of 1998?) 509 California glaciers. Actually he counts 108 actual glaciers and 401 "glacierets". To me the "glacierets" category really represents what are presently (for the time being) permanent ice patches which are the remnants of previously active, i.e., flowing, glaciers. Given the rapid retreat of most Sierra ice it seems possible that each year one or more of the 108 "true" glaciers is becoming a "glacieret" each year. The winter of 2004-2005 was an extremely heavy snow year in the High Sierra, but by September, after an unusually warm spring and typical summer, the Yosemite high country did not seem to have significantly more end-of-season snow cover than usual although the September meadows were a bit greener and more mosquito infested than I would normally expect. Therefore I don't think anyone anticipates any of the "glacierets" will expand to become glaciers again in the near future.

One of the best features of the book for either hikers or car tourists interested in seeing actual glacier phenomenon is the section "Seeing for Yourself" that describes in detail a drive across Yosemite National Park from Glacier Point, over Tioga Pass and down to Lee Vining with suggested stops and day hikes to see both formerly glaciated landscapes and some living glacial remnants.

Guyton emphasizes the long run view of geologic history and refers more than once to the fact that periodic advances of California's alpine glaciers, followed by their total disappearance for long periods, has been the normal situation for eons. In doing so he subtly provides a reality check on some of the hysterical end-of-the-world global warming hoopla that pervades the media.

The book has lots of useful black and white photos plus a section of color photographs as well as typical geology text diagrams of glaciers and related phenomenon. There is one map showing the maximum extent of California glaciations and a map-like diagram of Mt. Shasta's current glaciers, but some more detailed maps of current glaciers in the two most described areas - the Palisades and Yosemite's Tioga Pass region - would have been useful. I'd also like to see some "then and now" comparison photos of some of the glaciers.

Highly recommended for hikers, climbers and amateur naturalists who want to know more about the glaciated landscape and Ice Age glacier remnants in California, particularly in the High Sierra.

Short, sweet, and very understandable.
By George D. Smith
This is a basic, understandable review of the Ice Age and later glaciation of the mountains of California. The focus is on Yosemite, but other mountains in California are briefly covered. Glaciers that are present now date to the Little Ice Age, from 100- 700 years old only. They are shrinking fast. But older, "big" ice-age glaciers covered these mountains, starting with the glaciations of 1.5 million years ago. After reading the book, you understand why our mountains are so dramatically sculpted. The author briefly discusses the causes of cyclical changes in the temperature of the Northern hemisphere that accounts for recurrence of ice ages. There follows a good tour of Yosemite, by car, foot, and backpack, where you can see modern glaciers as well as the evidence of ancient ice ages. Many mountaineering terms (Col, Horn, Arête, Couloirs, etc) refer to mountain features that are products of glaciation, and are defined. There is a good glossary. Hikers, climbers, and mountain-visitors will enjoy this good book.

The layperson's guide to understanding glaciers
By A Customer
Bill Guyton, professor emeritus of geosciences at Cal State Chico, has
written an excellent book designed to teach people with little
knowledge of geology about the glaciers of California.
The book
discusses glaciers and ice ages in general, discovery of glaciers in
California, glacial chronology, and techniques used to determine ages
of glaciations; then goes on to describe ice-age and modern glaciers
throughout California. As a bonus, Guyton has included a chapter
about the controversy surrounded formation of Yosemite Valley and a
field trip through Yosemite on which readers may see glaciers and
their effects on the landscape.
Though the book is fairly complete,
well researched, and certainly well written, Guyton might have
discussed general concepts of glaciation a little bit more thoroughly.
In addition, Guyton omits recent highly controversial (and perhaps
faulty) research done in Yosemite by Jeffrey Schaffer (see _The
Geomorphic Evolution of the Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada
Landscapes: Solving the Riddles in the Rocks_, 1997).
The book,
however, is an excellent book for anyone wanting to learn more about
California's glaciers.

Pablo Tac, Indigenous Scholar: Writing on Luiseño Language and Colonial History, c.1840, by Pablo Tac

This volume makes available a remarkable body of writings, the only indigenous account of early nineteenth-century California. Written by Pablo Tac, this work on Luiseño language and culture offers a new approach to understanding California’s colonial history. Born and raised at Mission San Luis Rey, near San Diego, Pablo Tac became an international scholar. He traveled to Rome, where he studied Latin and other subjects, and produced these historical writings for the Vatican Librarian Cardinal Giuseppe Mezzofanti. In this multifaceted volume, Pablo Tac’s study is published in the original languages and in English translation. Lisbeth Haas introduces Pablo Tac’s life and the significance of the record he left. She situates his writing among that of other indigenous scholars, and elaborates on its poetic quality. Luiseño artist James Luna considers Tac’s contemporary significance in a series of artworks that bring Pablo Tac into provocative juxtaposition with the present day.

From the Inside Flap
“Pablo Tac's life was both tragic and victorious, and his experiences echo down through the years, offering the light of understanding to us in our world today. A thought-provoking book and a must-read for students of indigenous California.”

—Ernest Siva, author of Voices of the Flute: Songs of Three Southern California Indian Nations

"This is an exceptional piece of research and the definitive work on Pablo Tac. For the first time the entire corpus of the known writings of this ground-breaking Native Californian scholar are presented without editing, in their original languages (Latin, Luiseño) and in English translation. Lisbeth Haas presents a lucid and insightful account on the life, times, and significance of this important figure, while James Luna provides provocative commentary and striking images about Indian life today in the footsteps of Pablo Tac. This book belongs in the library of anyone interested in California history, Native Californians, and the Franciscan missions."

—Kent Lightfoot, author of Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants: The Legacy of Colonial Encounters on the California Frontiers

“Lisbeth Haas must be praised for gathering an exceptional team of scholars for the transcription, editing, and translation of Pablo Tac's Luiseño grammar, dictionary, and history. Haas's introductory essay situates Tac in a global context, defined by the fellow students Tac found in Rome in the 1830s while studying for the priesthood. Performance artist James Luna complements Haas's lucid assessment of Tac's brilliance as an indigenous scholar with a verbal and visual testimony of shared struggles as cultural warriors.”

—José Rabasa, author of Without History: Subaltern Studies, the Zapatista Insurgency, and the Specter of History

“The important manuscripts of the young nineteenth-century Luiseño scholar Pablo Tac are available at last to the American public, and most importantly to the people of Tac’s homeland. This faithful representation and translation of his work is fascinating in its own right, and enriched further by the insightful introductions by scholar Lisbeth Haas and Luiseño artist and wordsmith James Luna. Tac interweaves his masterful linguistic description and unfinished dictionary of nineteenth-century Luiseño with an illuminating account of Luiseño life and history before and during the mission era. Haas provides an equally interesting description of the scholarly and political environment of Rome where Tac lived, learned, and created from 1834 to 1841. Luna’s introduction and a foreword by the Luiseño tribal chair bring a twenty-first century indigenous interpretation to Tac’s long-ago life and work. Yet there is a freshness to Tac’s writing that is ageless, and makes us wish we could learn even more about this talented young man who participated in so many worlds, and whose life and career were too short.”

—Leanne Hinton, author of Flutes of Fire: Essays on California Indian Languages

Poorly translated and not edited
By John Carrillo
Although I have an interest in indigenous culture and the early history of Mexican California, I cannot recommend this book unless you enjoy reading an unedited manuscript. It was like watching a movie with all the takes without any editing. You see the same thing over and over instead of the final version. It was obvious that he restarted his dictionary many times and the obvious choice would be to include only the final most complete version even if it was missing some of the previous definitions. Many times the direct translation produced incomprehensible text which could only be deciphered from the original Spanish. To give one example when trying to explain that the Spanish word "porque" was used to mean two different things, the English words "why" and "because", it would be obvious to assign the Luiseño words to the English equivalents. Instead the literal English translation is completely indecipherable and you must resort to the Spanish to understand what he was saying. There are some tidbits of indigenous thought where he departs from his dictionary to describe what life was like in the mission from the perspective of an indigenous Mexican citizen. It is obvious the historical perspective was one where the indigenous tribe allowed the Spanish to remain and live with them instead of killing them which they easily could have done considering they were greatly outnumbered. The Captain of the tribe was instrumental in allowing the Spanish to remain and they were allowed to do so at the discretion of the tribe. They took ownership for construction the mission and the productivity of the mission was described with great pride. The social structure was one where roles were defined and the work was shared in what can be described as a communal economic system. The Captain retained an unofficial leadership position but the Padre was the authoritative leader of the mission in trading for goods and distributing them among the communal workers.

Writing and Rebellion: England in 1381 (The New Historicism: Studies in Cultural Poetics), by Steven Justice

In this compelling account of the "peasants' revolt" of 1381, in which rebels burned hundreds of official archives and attacked other symbols of authority, Steven Justice demonstrates that the rebellion was not an uncontrolled, inarticulate explosion of peasant resentment but an informed and tactical claim to literacy and rule.

Focusing on six brief, enigmatic texts written by the rebels themselves, Justice places the English peasantry within a public discourse from which historians, both medieval and modern, have thus far excluded them. He recreates the imaginative world of medieval villagers—how they worked and governed themselves, how they used official communications in unofficial ways, and how they produced a disciplined insurgent ideology.

"Original, courageous, and exemplary. . . . This will prove to be one of the most significant and energizing works of recent decades."—David Wallace, editor of The Cambridge History of Medieval English Literature

Justice's work powerfully addresses issues that have emerged in the controversies over essentialism and performativity in feminist and ethnicity and queer theory, over alteritism and intimacy in post-colonial theory, and over subversion and containment in new historicism. . . . A Well Written Look at Literacy and Social Protest
By jessbcuz
I read this book in preparation for a presentation on the Peasant's Revolt in a Master's level late medieval literature class. Recommended by my professor, I was at first leary, expecting a dry account of an historical event I was sure I would find irrelavant and boring. Much to my surprise, once I began reading, I became very interested in this early social movement. Justice's book presented me with a good grasp of the events and motivations, but is apparently also his own unique read on those events, making it interesting to more era-knowlegable readers.

Particularly his focus on literacy and the idea that by posting the letters (what, as one of the other reviewer's points out, Justice likens to broadsides) there was an attempt at legitimization through literacy of their voice and cause. Justice further points out that we must be sensitve to the many levels of literacy, highlighting how one literate family member could function to make the entire family literate and thereby opening up access to a larger social world. This book also provided an interesting look at how social control and literacy control can be linked through the church and other disseminators of information.

Interesting read, and very accessible. A great introduction to this event that should be looked at more often.

Permitting a Voice
By J. Forbes
In his rethinking of chronicled history, Justice takes his reader on a journey through both high and low "literature" and reconfigures the images, motives, and voice of England's Peasant's Rebellion of 1381. He beautifully argues that the peasants rebelled not to tear down the English monarchy (in fact, many maintained their loyalty throughout), but to enable equal access to textual culture, written history, and a cultural voice. By mentioning the influence of Langland, Gower, and Chaucer's writings in the Rebellion, Justice demonstrates that the peasants did not wish to eliminate written culture because they did not understand it, but to re-write (or re-evaluate) it because they could identify with it. Justice truly does justice to the degree of social dynamism and movement during the turbulent fourteenth century.

close reading and everyday history
By L. Wagner
Steven Justice begins by examining a handful of documents representing the views of the peasant rebels who tried to depose corrupt officials and destroy land records. From the letters themselves (which he concludes were early broadsheets), Justice reasons and writes beautifully to reanimate daily life at the time of the rebellion (land use and functional literacy among the peasants who rebelled). He also identifies echoes of the rebellion in Chaucer and of Langland in the rebellion, as well as an analysis of John Wyclif's possible motivation of the rebels. Thought-provoking, vivid history. A map would be a nice addition if the book is reprinted.

California Native Gardening: A Month-by-Month Guide, by Helen Popper

This is the first month-by-month guide to gardening with native plants in a state that follows a unique, nontraditional seasonal rhythm. Beginning in October, when much of California leaves the dry season behind and prepares for its own green “spring,” Helen Popper provides detailed, calendar-based information for both beginning and experienced native gardeners. Each month’s chapter lists gardening tasks, including repeated tasks and those specific to each season. Popper offers planting and design ideas, and explains core gardening techniques such as pruning, mulching, and propagating. She tells how to use native plants in traditional garden styles, including Japanese, herb, and formal gardens, and recommends places for viewing natives. An essential year-round companion, this beautifully written and illustrated book nurtures the twin delights of seeing wild plants in the garden and garden plants in the wild.

Helpful, well-organized and beautiful
By Jose
Popper's book is the first guide to the annual cycles of caring for our native plants, and it will be especially welcome to those who have just begun to appreciate these beauties by adding them to their gardens.

The California garden year begins in the fall with the start of our rainy season, so it makes sense that the first monthly chapter is October. Each month has its own chores: planting wildflowers, pruning shrubs, cleaning up dead limbs, watering if needed, etc. It's very handy to have these monthly chapters to help us organize and prioritize what we will be doing. The title chapters capture the year in a nutshell: October: Change in the Air, November: Spring is Here, February: Clean and Weed, May: Collect Your Seeds, etc.

Popper's planting advice is practical and her friendly tone is like a conversation with a more experienced friend. In October she encourages us to avoid the pitfall of "an instant filled-in look" by not buying large plants and, instead, to "space large plants appropriately and fill in with annuals or low, fast-growing native perennials that are either short lived or easy to pull out later." For May her advice is to allow some wildflowers to set seeds, both for more plants next year and to attract seed-eating birds. July's advice includes suggestions for reducing the risk of wildfires by removing "accumulated leaves and needles from the roof and gutters," trimming trees so they don't touch buildings, and "removing limbs below six feet" to slow the spread of fires.

A chapter on Native Garden Styles includes discussions of herb gardens, Japanese gardens, cottage gardens, etc. Especially handsome photos illustrate this useful book, and remind us that native plants belong in all kinds of garden settings. A guide to when to take cuttings for propagation, bibliography, and other useful reference material is included.

This useful book should be close at hand as you plan your garden chores and make lists of what to add to your garden during the coming year.

What a fantastic book
By bookworm3152
This is a really well done book. The pictures, descriptions, and friendly writing style make this an enjoyable read. I especially appreciated the practical advice for problems with gophers, weeds, etc. The book is subdivided into monthly chapters, which makes it really easy to follow - I can simply dive into the current month, and save the nonrelevant material for later. Being a nature lover myself, I felt like I lived through an entire year's season of gardening - it's that friendly! I'm definitely planning on getting more as gifts for friends and family.

Reframing Rembrandt: Jews and the Christian Image in Seventeenth-Century Amsterdam, by Michæl Zell

This richly detailed study reconceptualizes a striking but enigmatic moment in Rembrandt's art from the 1650s--one of the artist's most prolific and creative periods. Michael Zell identifies a significant theological shift in Rembrandt's use of religious imagery and interprets this shift in light of the unique religious and social conditions of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Rembrandt's biblical art has generally been regarded as the embodiment of a Protestant aesthetic. By looking closely at the artist's relationship with his patron Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel and the ideas of a group of "philosemitic" Protestants with whom the rabbi was engaged in an apologetic dialogue, Zell deepens and complicates our understanding of Rembrandt's sacred art from this period.

Review
"Michael Zell offers a nuanced, richly documented account of Rembrandt as master of pictorial exegesis, whose biblical works of the 1650s reflect intensively on the relation between law and grace, Temple and Gospel, the Old and New Covenants. Showing how Rembrandt applied the discursive practices of philosemitic theologians engaged in millenarian dialogue with the great Jewish apologist Menasseh ben Israel, Zell brilliantly expounds a series of paintings and prints such as Jacob Blessing the Sons of Joseph and The Presentation of Christ in the Temple in the Dark Manner. By calling attention to the artist's singular application of exegetical tools-for example, his use of Protestant typology to discern Christological meanings in patriarchal history-Zell demonstrates how these images constitute a visual hermeneutics."-Walter S. Melion, author of Shaping the Netherlandish Canon: Karel Van Mander's Schilder-Boeck; "A sensitive, well-researched study of a fascinating and dramatic subject. Zell persuasively links Rembrandt's late biblical representations to the ambivalent relations between Protestants and Jews in his age, arguing, on the basis of close readings of the works themselves, that the concerns of Christian messianism influenced Rembrandt's artistic choices."-Gary Schwartz, author of Rembrandt: His Life, His Paintings; "The best scholars often work at the boundary between disciplines. This is the case for Michael Zell, who makes a distinct contribution to the history of religion as well as to the history of art. He shows how Rembrandt's interpretation of the Bible was permeated by the writings of Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel as well as by those of courageous intellectuals within the Reformed Church who sought a common ground with the Jews and the Portuguese community of conversos. Zell's meticulous research throws a strong light on this little-known patch of seventeenth-century history."-John Michael Montias, author of Vermeer and His Milieu: A Web of Social History

Melion, author of Shaping the Netherlandish Canon: Karel Van Mander's Schilder-Boeck "A sensitive, well-researched study of a fascinating and dramatic subject. Zell persuasively links Rembrandt's late biblical representations to the ambivalent relations between Protestants and Jews in his age, arguing, on the basis of close readings of the works themselves, that the concerns of Christian messianism influenced Rembrandt's artistic choices."-Gary Schwartz, author of Rembrandt: His Life, His Paintings "The best scholars often work at the boundary between disciplines.

Pacific Pinot Noir: A Comprehensive Winery Guide for Consumers and Connoisseurs, by John Winthrop Hæger

Featuring more than two hundred in-depth winery profiles, this definitive guide is the best single source of information on world-renowned pinot noirs from California and Oregon. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of a grape variety considered by many to produce the ultimate food wine, John Winthrop Haeger offers this expanded, updated companion volume to his award-winning North American Pinot Noir. Here, with three times the number of winery profiles, he focuses exclusively on what he calls the Pacific Pinot Zone, stretching from the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon to Santa Barbara in California and extending up to thirty miles inland. An introductory essay provides an indispensable view of pinot noir in the United States—including the dramatic effect that the movie Sideways has had on its sales and production.

Pacific Pinot Noir features:

* Detailed descriptive tasting notes and selected vertical tastings

* At-a-glance graphics conveying information on tasting rooms, prices, and production for each winery

* Regional maps showing key viticultural areas

* Contact information for each winery

A Good Book But Not Perfect!
By Christopher Barrett
I live in Portland and am in the wine business, so of course I own a copy of this book.

The pros:

It does contain a good number of wineries and highlights their history briefly.
The text also contains contact information for a number of wineries, which proves useful.

Cons:

There is a lot of space dedicated to tasting notes on individual wines, my beef with this is that these notes become obsolete quickly. I would have preferred more detail on the history of the individual wineries and producers.

A lot of the information in this book is of use for those looking for a little light reading on NW pinot noir, but it pales in comparison to the amount of information in the Oregon Pinot Camp pamphlet.

Best guide to pinot producers in US, but getting a little dated
By Sitting in Seattle
If you are a fan of new world Pinot Noir, you will find new producers of interest here, and that makes this volume well worth the price. In this volume, Haeger follows up his benchmark North American Pinot Noir (NAPN) and covers only the Pacific coast region with many more winery profiles, more recent tasting notes, and coverage of almost all of the important players.

Unlike the earlier NAPN, which focused more on history and the story of American PN, the present book is primarily a guide to wineries and their wines. In the introduction, Haeger describes the Pacific region in some detail and develops the "consensus" protocol of winemaking. Following that, most of the volume consists of 2-3 pages on individual wineries, their vineyards and winemaking procedure insofar as they differ from the consensus protocol, and tasting notes on their wines.

The primary limitation of the book is that it was published in 2008 and thus the specific tasting notes are most relevant for vintages up to about 2005. If you have older PN in your cellar, it will be a great companion to them. However, it is still valuable for later vintages, since many of the vineyards, sources, and general tasting profiles are consistent. It is also fascinating to read the stories of the wineries.

Perhaps the best use of the book is to find new producers. Haeger notes his favorites, but even more importantly, the extensive tasting notes will certainly point you to wines and wineries that interest you. It's a great way to find new places to visit or purchase.

Overall, it's slightly dated but well worth the investment if you love California, Oregon, or BC Pinot. Cheers!
