Writing and Rebellion: England in 1381 (The New Historicism: Studies in Cultural Poetics), by Steven Justice

In this compelling account of the "peasants' revolt" of 1381, in which rebels burned hundreds of official archives and attacked other symbols of authority, Steven Justice demonstrates that the rebellion was not an uncontrolled, inarticulate explosion of peasant resentment but an informed and tactical claim to literacy and rule.

Focusing on six brief, enigmatic texts written by the rebels themselves, Justice places the English peasantry within a public discourse from which historians, both medieval and modern, have thus far excluded them. He recreates the imaginative world of medieval villagers—how they worked and governed themselves, how they used official communications in unofficial ways, and how they produced a disciplined insurgent ideology.

From the Inside Flap
"Original, courageous, and exemplary. . . . This will prove to be one of the most significant and energizing works of recent decades."—David Wallace, editor of The Cambridge History of Medieval English Literature

"A thoroughly accomplished and groundbreaking piece of historicist medievalism, and a 'local' study that resonates in an extraordinarily sensitive and promising way with problems that are worrying and entrancing literary and cultural studies in general. . . . Justice's work powerfully addresses issues that have emerged in the controversies over essentialism and performativity in feminist and ethnicity and queer theory, over alteritism and intimacy in post-colonial theory, and over subversion and containment in new historicism. . . . If Writing and Rebellion were to do no more than recharge the practice of medieval scholarship, draw attention to the textuality of 1381, and establish the importance of 1381 to Ricardian culture as a whole, thereby guiding us to a new reading of that period, it would be a wonderful book; it does all these things, but its implications go even farther. I hope it will be read by many people in many fields thinking seriously about the making of social and literary change."—Louise O. Fradenburg, author of City, Marriage, Tournament: Arts of Rule in Late Medieval Scotland

A Well Written Look at Literacy and Social Protest
By jessbcuz
I read this book in preparation for a presentation on the Peasant's Revolt in a Master's level late medieval literature class. Recommended by my professor, I was at first leary, expecting a dry account of an historical event I was sure I would find irrelavant and boring. Much to my surprise, once I began reading, I became very interested in this early social movement. Justice's book presented me with a good grasp of the events and motivations, but is apparently also his own unique read on those events, making it interesting to more era-knowlegable readers.

Particularly his focus on literacy and the idea that by posting the letters (what, as one of the other reviewer's points out, Justice likens to broadsides) there was an attempt at legitimization through literacy of their voice and cause. Justice further points out that we must be sensitve to the many levels of literacy, highlighting how one literate family member could function to make the entire family literate and thereby opening up access to a larger social world. This book also provided an interesting look at how social control and literacy control can be linked through the church and other disseminators of information.

Interesting read, and very accessible. A great introduction to this event that should be looked at more often.

Permitting a Voice
By J. Forbes
In his rethinking of chronicled history, Justice takes his reader on a journey through both high and low "literature" and reconfigures the images, motives, and voice of England's Peasant's Rebellion of 1381. He beautifully argues that the peasants rebelled not to tear down the English monarchy (in fact, many maintained their loyalty throughout), but to enable equal access to textual culture, written history, and a cultural voice. By mentioning the influence of Langland, Gower, and Chaucer's writings in the Rebellion, Justice demonstrates that the peasants did not wish to eliminate written culture because they did not understand it, but to re-write (or re-evaluate) it because they could identify with it. Justice truly does justice to the degree of social dynamism and movement during the turbulent fourteenth century.

close reading and everyday history
By L. Wagner
Steven Justice begins by examining a handful of documents representing the views of the peasant rebels who tried to depose corrupt officials and destroy land records. From the letters themselves (which he concludes were early broadsheets), Justice reasons and writes beautifully to reanimate daily life at the time of the rebellion (land use and functional literacy among the peasants who rebelled). He also identifies echoes of the rebellion in Chaucer and of Langland in the rebellion, as well as an analysis of John Wyclif's possible motivation of the rebels. Thought-provoking, vivid history. A map would be a nice addition if the book is reprinted.
