Art/Women/California, 1950-2000: Parallels and Intersections (San Jose Museum of Art)From University of California Press

Art/Women/California 1950-2000: Parallels and Intersections is an unprecedented examination of the impact that specific women artists, working in California in the second half of the twentieth century, have had on broadening the definition of art. Twenty preeminent scholars from diverse cultural backgrounds investigate how the vast sociopolitical changes of the post-World War II era affected these women and how the ensuing events influenced the art that they produced. This book outlines the role these pivotal artists and their work played in reshaping the California cultural profile into what it is today.

Illustrated with more than one hundred color plates and duotones, Art/Women/California 1950-2000 reveals the richness of this fifty-year period by contrasting and comparing the artists and their varied artistic practices in relation to the larger sociopolitical context. The book employs a variety of historical perspectives to reflect the distinct and parallel experiences of California's major cultural communities while revealing points of intersection by analyzing shared themes and practices.

Because California serves as a gateway for a myriad of immigrants and an epicenter for the feminist movement, and because of its history of activism, its culture of experimentation, and its reputation for innovative technology and media, the state has evolved into a crucial and inspirational environment for women artists. Their work continues to transform our perceptions and revitalize art's connections to its surrounding environment and community. Exploring the conjuncture between place and artistic activity from multiple perspectives, this book stands as a testament to the rich diversity that is contemporary California culture.

From Library Journal
Featuring over 100 splendid color plates and duotones and almost 20 essays by scholars from different cultural backgrounds, this is the first survey of women artists in post-World War II California and their impact on contemporary culture. Both comprehensive in scope and groundbreaking in subject matter, the essays and images fully express the diversity of current California culture. The book accompanies an exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Art, which initiated this project as a strategy to redress mainstream art history's neglect of women artists and their work. Divided into two sections, "Parallels" and "Intersections," the essays explore art, history, and politics and how they fuse to inform artistic expression while also examining the changes in postwar society and their effects on art. "Parallels," which also includes poems by Audre Lorde and others, examines how artists are influenced by their separate experiences within a California context, while "Intersections" identifies artistic trends and practices within this group. Among the notable contributors are Whitney Chadwick and Angela Y. Davis. Recommended for academic libraries with collections in women or California artists and for larger public libraries.

From Booklist
The far-reaching scope of this study finds its roots in an earlier symposium, and the resulting book retraces a half-century of art produced by women in California, seamlessly linking critical understanding with social analysis in essays by art historians and scholars from diverse disciplines and cultures. During the years 1950 to 2000, art by women in the Golden State manifested concerns coursing through the Western world. Ethnic backgrounds and their impact are looked at in the book's first section, while the second part examines points where kindred themes coincide. The effects of feminism, technological breakthroughs, and political as well as societal upheavals are reflected in thought-provoking commentary and accompanying reproductions of compelling paintings, prints, and murals; photographs and stills from video and film; and documentation of performances, conceptual art, and new media. But the overriding quality captured here is an exhilarating individuality and the artistic intensity that motivates Betye Saar to create her mixed media assemblages, Ann Hamilton to conjure her complex installations, and Judy Chicago to realize her much photographed Dinner Party. Review
"An impressive and illuminating survey of art by women in California during the last half of the 20th century. Some of the images are intentionally shocking and unsettling, some are fanciful and lyrical, some are unashamed works of agitprop, and a few are all of these at once. . . . The art . . . always speaks for itself, and thus allows us to understand what the essayists are trying to say."--"Los Angeles Times Book Review

Is This the New Academicism?
By Peter Baklava
These type of art books seem to come in two varieties: 1) heavy on history and criticism or 2) overflowing with plates and reproductions. This book is in the former category, and in all honesty, it should probably have been titled "Art/Feminism/California, 1950-2000", because the art criticism is definitely slanted with a particular ideology. Prepare to stumble across rather meaningless and I think, stupidly antiquated, phrases like "the male gaze".

Nevertheless, there is a vast amount of information here. The book can be valuable, then, in a couple of ways. One can read it as a guidebook to contemporary (or at least, modern) west coast, feminist artists-- or, as an index of informed, and sometimes fearlessly politically correct art criticism. I found the segment by Amelia Jones the most entertaining and least pretentious example, partly because it comes in the form of a spontaneous interview. Most of the book seems uncomfortably bent on classifying artists according to ethnicity. Personally, I like multiculturalism, but when it becomes a matter of stuffing everyone into a category, as in "Chicanos here, Asians there", I rebel.

In fact, as scholarly and erudite as books like this one may be, they suggest that today's young female artist may face a different, but equally difficult form of "Obstacle Course", if they wish to follow the established and politically correct paradigms laid out in this book, in order to qualify as an "authentic", precedent-minded female artist.

Notes on a Cellar-Book, by George Saintsbury

Since its first publication in 1920, George Saintsbury's classic Notes on a Cellar-Book has remained one of the greatest tributes to drink and drinking in the literature of wine. A collection of tasting notes, menus, and robust opinions, the work is filled with anecdotes and recollections of wines and spirits consumed—from the heights of Romanée-Conti to the simple pleasures of beer, flip, and mum. Thomas Pinney brings this unique work alive for contemporary audiences by providing the keys to a full understanding of Notes on a Cellar-Book in a new edition that includes explanatory endnotes, an essay on the book's legacy, and additional articles on wine by Saintsbury.

The definitive edition of a classic
By Chambolle
If you're a wine geek, and perhaps even if you're not, you've heard of Saintsbury's Notes on a Cellar-Book. Prof. Saintsbury (1845-1933) was a journalist and later a professor of English Literature at Edinburgh. Notes on a Cellar-Book is his only book on wine and spirits, published in 1920 towards the end of his career, during the dark days of Prohibition in the United States and a noisy temperance movement in the UK.

Cellar-Book is one of those works that everyone knows about but few people have actually read, and five minutes with an original edition of the book will reveal why. It is so chock full of obscure literary allusions, puns, references to once-current events and other arcane matters that it is almost impossible to follow. I've tried to plough through my own 1920 edition of it unassisted many times over the past couple of decades, and to be perfectly honest, I never really made any headway on the road to comprehension.

Thomas Pinney's new edition includes detailed annotations that finally make the Cellar-Book comprehensible and enjoyable.

So is it all worth it? Yes, if you are seeking an insight into Saintsbury's realm -- the aesthetics of wine and food in a scholarly world that existed before anyone dreamed up the Wine Spectator, Gourmet Magazine, Robert Parker, and the Food Channel. Before celebrity chefs. When an English professor of modest means could enjoy Richebourg and Montrachet, before hedge fund zillionaires who dump ten thousand bucks on a bottle of Burgundy, or a couple million to remodel the corner office.

It's a memoir and a collection of personal observations, not a comprehensive review of any particular wine or wine region, chock full of Saintsbury's remembrances of great meals and bottles he'd enjoyed over a long career of eating and drinking very well, thank you very much, with his college brethren. The Professor also takes every opportunity to toss barbs at prohibitionism and prohibitionists everywhere.

In an appendix, Pinney includes a number of Saintsbury's short articles and essays on wine, not included in the original Cellar-Book. One describes the wine cellar in an elaborate (and elaborately expensive) doll's house that was presented as a gift to Queen Mary in 1924. Yes, just one generous lifespan removed from our own times, but it was definitely another world.

Hats off to Thomas Pinney for bringing that world and this hoary chestnut back to life for modern readers.

A Fun Work from an English Eccentric
By Wine Teacher
"Notes on a Cellar Book", originally published in 1920, was one of the first books on wine in the English language. It kicked off a generation of English wine criticism style that remains to this day. The authur George Saintsbury recalls a life time of imbibing and dining, giving us a glimpse of an era from over a century ago. It is opinionated but that makes it fun. Most of the wines and other drinks mentioned are still the standard of what a serious wine drinker/collector would have today, albeit of the more current vintages. It is not an easy read for someone who does not know a lot about wine. Saintbury's comments would not make much sense to such a person nor would there be much relevance. For a wine neophite whose wine experience is limited to current American and other New World wines, this book will most likely be a disappointment. When Saintsburgy wrote this book, the American wine industry was still in its infancy. American wines were almost completely unavailable in England. Saintbury would not easily have the chance to try them. Most of what he did write about are widely available to us and are the standards of a good wine cellar today. This was "the" book for those interested in wine in the twenties and thirties. Judging by the number of editions and printings since 1920, it has been a reasonably popular book. If one is short in wine knowledge but wanting to read this book, Thomas Pinney the American wine historian, has done an annotated version of this book. Pinney has provided a lot of the background to make this book more accessable to a wine neophite. However, for those who are not able to follow Saintbury on their own and needing Pinney's help, they would probably not find this book interesting enough even with the annotation. You really have to be one interested in European wines to have any reason to read this book. It is a classic, It is a book of a great deal of significance in the history of wine criticism. An older edition is a great gift for any serious wine collector. Many have heard of it but probably have not read it and do not own it.

Christian America? What Evangelicals Really Want, by Christian Smith

In recent decades Protestant evangelicalism has become a conspicuous and--to many Americans, worrisome--part of this country's cultural and political landscape. But just how unified is the supposed constituency of the Christian Coalition? And who exactly are the people the Christian Right claims to represent? In the most extensive study of American evangelicals ever conducted, Christian Smith explores the beliefs, values, commitments, and goals of the ordinary men and women who make up this often misunderstood religious group. The result is a much-needed contribution to the discussion of issues surrounding fundamental American freedoms and the basic identity of the United States as a pluralistic nation.

Based on data from a three-year national study, including more than 200 in-depth interviews of evangelicals around the country, Christian America? assesses the common stereotype of evangelicals as intolerant, right-wing, religious zealots seeking to impose a Christian moral order through political force. What Smith finds instead are people vastly more diverse and ambivalent than this stereotype suggests. On issues such as religion in education, "family values," Christian political activism, and tolerance of other religions and moralities, evangelicals are highly disparate and conflicted. As the voices of interviewees make clear, the labels "conservative" and "liberal" are too simplistic for understanding their approaches to public life and political action.

From Publishers Weekly
In this convincing cultural analysis, Smith, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, aims to debunk the prevailing myth, fed by high-profile elites in the religious right, that evangelical Christians are a uniform body of obedient zealots. Smith focuses on "ordinary Evangelicals" and poses the questions embedded in the title: What do they want from America, and how do they hope to get it? He then combines compelling statistical research with evangelicals' own words from in-depth interviews to show that evangelicals as a group are hardly monolithic in their views, nor do they necessarily constitute a threat to pluralism in America. In matters ranging from politics to public schools and gender roles in the family, the author finds that evangelicals are far more likely to advocate tolerance and change through example and personal Christian discipleship than through public mandates. In his chapter on families, Smith reveals a particularly intriguing complexity of evangelical views: most respondents claim male headship without giving up equality between spouses. These internal contradictions are precisely what Smith wants us to understand; although they may lag behind other Americans in advocating diversity, evangelicals are still more complex than most have assumed thus far. Smith provides a narrated appendix in which he presents his regression analyses in surprisingly readable form, appropriate even for the lay reader. This book is a major contribution, both substantively and methodologically, to understanding America's religious landscape.

From Library Journal
Unlike Linda Kintz's Between Jesus and the Market: The Emotions That Matter in Right-Wing America (LJ 10/1/97) and much of the other recent literature on the Christian right, Smith (sociology, Univ. of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; American Evangelicalism: Embattled and Thriving) goes beyond the speeches and books of the (often self-) identified leaders and examines the attitudes of the broad range of Protestant evangelicals. Basing his research on interviews that followed up on surveys, Smith shows that most evangelicals do not want a country in which Christian beliefs and practices are imposed, as is so often charged. Their views generally are much more nuanced and diverse, and Smith, using a narrative form, discusses several of them, considering topics that range from gender roles to the role of religion in politics and public schools. An appendix gives the results of several surveys. An important book, especially during this Presidential election year; recommended for most libraries.

Must reading for anyone interested in evangelicalism
By Sean Everton
In this book Christian Smith shatters many of the stereotypes that the media and academics hold about American Evangelicals. In it he draws on a series of interviews that he and his colleagues conducted over a three-year period as part of a much larger research project of American evangelicals. It compliments his 1998 book on evangelicals that is far more quantitative in nature.
Specifically, Smith explores how evangelicals think about pluralism, politics, education and gender roles. He concludes his book with a chapter looking at the results of recent surveys on evangelicals. What Smith finds is that evangelicals embrace a wide variety of views that are higly complex and not reducible to a single stereotype. As an example, while evangelicals embrace language that hold husbands up as the leaders of their families, in practice they are just as egalitarian as everyone else.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the evangelical subculture. Smith offers a far more nuanced and complex view of evangelicals than many commentators and academics have led us to believe.

Primer for the Perry/Bachman Gestalt: The "Lngering Enlightenment"
By Peter P. Fuchs
Every time I have a reason to dip into this man's "scholarship" I am amazed at the simple superficiality of it. One must grant him a certain cleverness in knowing how to strike chords that will get people to think his point-of-view is useful as a balancer. But as to real analysis of anything, he starts with demonstrable falsehood. Though he praises the editors, it is clear that they were none too busy or concerned. You can sum all of this up with a statement from his Conclusion:

"Despite lingering Enlightenment ideologies about strong objectivity and universal rationality, our lives remain fundamentally governed by imaginative narratives of the historical traditions that encompass them.." p. 194

To unpack the presumption and misinformation contained in those comments would take a whole article. But one should point out that Christian Smith somehow imagines that the entire legal system of the United States, grounded as it is in aspirations of "strong objectivity" are somehow to be re-visioned by visionary academics like him, as being nudged-out out by "imaginative narratives." It is absurd to think that such a -- comparatively -- fair country as this should have its staying power identified with Christian Smith's childish "imaginative narratives". Rather, even on a continuum of scholarly views of the relationship between the Founders of this country and Enlightenment notions of "universal rationality", no one responsible would account for it by way of a "lingering" "imaginative narrative". By contrast we are dealing with the Founding aspirations of this country in its very core ethos. If one conceives of that as merely "lingering" then that shows some basic presumption of hostility to the very ethos of a free society as embodied in that Founding aspiration.

That all this should be delimited in a book about what Evangelicals want, sheds oblique light on current conundrums of people like Perry and Bachman. This book is poor scholarship, but no doubt would be a good primer for those characters.

Son of the Cypresses: Memories, Reflections, and Regrets from a Political Life, by Meron Benvenisti

"Now that I am seventy years of age, it is my prerogative to offer a summing up," says Meron Benvenisti, internationally known author and columnist, Jerusalem native, and scion of Israel’s founders. Born in Palestine in 1934 to a Sephardic father and an Ashkenazi mother, Benvenisti has enjoyed an unusual vantage point from which to consider his homeland’s conflicts and controversies.

Throughout his long and provocative career as a scholar, an elected official, and a respected journalist, he has remained intimately involved with Israel’s social and political development.

Part memoir and part political polemic, Son of the Cypresses threads Benvenisti’s own story through the story of Israel. The result is a vivid, sharply drawn eyewitness account of pre-state Jerusalem and Israel’s early years. He memorably sets the scene by recalling his father’s emotional journey from Jewish Salonika in 1913 to Palestine, with all its attendant euphoria and frustration, and his father’s pioneer dedication to inculcating Israeli youth with a “native’s” attachment to the homeland.

In describing the colorful and lively Jerusalem in which he grew up, Benvenisti recalls the many challenges faced by new Jewish immigrants, who found themselves not only in conflict with the Arab population but also with each other as Sephardim and Ashkenazim. He revisits his own public disagreements with both Zionists and Palestinians and shares indelible memories such as his boyhood experiences of the 1948 War. In remembering his life as an Israeli sabra, Benvenisti offers a vivid record of the historical roots of the conflict that persists today.

From the Inside Flap
"Whether Benvenisti takes up the issues of Jerusalem or the Oslo Agreements, whether people believe him to be marginal, heretical, or a contradictory critic of Israeli and Palestinian societies and politics, there is real force in his arguments and interpretations. His writing is so compelling and disturbing that his positions must be taken seriously."—Richard D. Hecht, Professor of Religious Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara

"Wading into the white-hot cauldron of Israeli-Palestinian cultural politics, the independent-minded Benvenisti crowns his long career as politician, author, and scholar-journalist with this fearless, highly personal history of and engagement with his nation's dreams and trials. Part autobiography, part painful cultural history, part polemical argument with a host of equally strong-willed countrymen and intellectuals, Jerusalem's former deputy mayor provides readers with one veteran insider's search for an ethical place to stand in what may be the most intractable, complex and dangerous dilemma of our times. This book is an impossibly lonely, courageous effort to make the basic case to both his own ancestors and fellow Israelis that only surrender of the demand for full sovereignty for both Jews and Palestinians in favor of some yet-to-be-created shared polity will save his beloved land of Israeli cypresses and Palestinian orchards. A stunningly brave and urgent achievement, and an intensely rewarding experience for all readers concerned about the fate of the Middle East."—Peter Nabokov, author of A Forest of Time and Where the Lightening Strikes

Not that interesting, scattered essays
By Seth J. Frantzman
This isn't really a soul searching book, and its not really about regrets. It mostly about the political development of an Israeli intellectual who came to abhore his countries policies and much of its history. It is the story of the coming of age of an anti-Zionist in his own words. It tells the story of a Kibbutznik and binationalist who beleived himself to be a native Canaanite Hebrew and worked for the Jerusalem municipality with Teddy Kolleck. He worked to help Arabs and to make 'occupation' tolerable.

He studied the Crusades and came to view them with some parrelells with the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, but also claimed that it was not a completely fair comparison.

The author moruned the Dolphinarium bombing of 2002 but also thought the battle of Jenin was another Deir Yassin, still claiming in this book there were large numbers of civilian casualties, even though this is not accurate.

But the greatest failure of this book is that it is a bunch of loosely gathered anecdotes and stories and essays. It doesn't flow and there is very little synthesis. So by and large this account is a failure. Its not Benvenisti's best work and its not a very good memoir. It perhaps sheds light on a few topics and gives one an added introcution to this known critic of Israel.

A one- sided witness Turning his father's world upside down
By Shalom Freedman
At the age of seventy Meron Benvenisti post- Zionist Israeli political activist and former Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem has decided to make a kind of summing up of his family legacy and public life. He begins by telling the story of his parents, of his father who came to Israel from Salonika and his mother whose family came from Suvalki on the border of Prussia, Lithuania and Poland. The Sephardic father and the Ashkenazi mother hoped to produce a true child of the land.
Benvenisti's father was an important Zionist educator who contributed greatly to the educating of educators, to the learning of the land through walking up and down on it. His father who would be awarded the Israel Prize was a fervent Zionist, one who believed deeply in the Jewish return to their historical homeland and the making of a new society in an ancient land.
Benvenisti tells of his distancing from the vision of his father. This comes primarily through his sympathy with and connection to the 'other people' in the land, the Palestinians. As his father traced the Jewish roots of village after village in the Holy Land, so Meron Benvenisti would later trace their Arab roots. And this especially in regard to those Arab villages which were destroyed in the 1947-78 Israel War of Independence.
In fact Benvenisti seems at a certain point to wholly identify himself with the Palestinian Arabs, to see them as the ignored victims of the Zionist story. How ignored they are is of course a debatable question but Benvenisti sees them as the losers in the conflict who must be restored to a situation of dignity and well- being.
As he understands it Israel itself by its victory in 1967 entered a situation disastrous for its own soul and well- being. As Benvenisti understands the 'occupation' of 1967 and the subsequent Jewish settlement in parts of historical Eretz Yisrael led to an irreversible situation a mixing-up of the peoples which makes any kind of two- state solution of the conflict impossible.
Benvenisti who speaks at the end of the book of his despair and pessimism, and concern for his grandchildren believes that some kind of one-state federal arrangement is the only possible hope for improving the situation. But he realistically believes that even if this is adopted a situation of crisis will exist for years ahead. Here he indicates that even within the pre- 1967 Israel the large and growing Arab minority which constitutes today one - fifth of Israel's population makes a two- state solution impossible.
It is possible to understand and even sympathize with Benvenisti's sense of conflict and contradiction, his sympathy with the Palestinians while he maintains that he and his family are a strong part of the land and must continue there i.e. He is no Jihadi advocating eliminating of the Jews from the land.
But his 'conversion' to the Palestinian Arab side is so extreme that it leads him to distort not only the historical realities, but also everyday situations. He presents himself as a kind of one- man party of righteousness and repeatedly scorns his fellow Israeli 'leftists'.He underplays the murderousness of the Arab struggle, their unending efforts to destroy the Jewish community and drive them from the land. He does not connect the 'Palestinian Arab threat to Israel with the broader Arab and Islamic threats. He does not give proper credit to Israel not only for its against great odds, continuing to survive and thrive- but for the actual improvements it has made in the quality of life of the Arab minority in the state.
In this sense he is not a very reliable guide.

Levenson's Non-porus Confucianism
By Daniel Stroup
If not one of the most popular works, then certainly one of the most elegantly written on the subject of the congruencies, or lack there of, between traditional (Confucian) and "modern" China is Joseph Levenson's trilogy 'Confucian China and Its Modern Fate'. Although for the past twenty years or more this has been an often refuted work (see Paul A. Cohen, 'Discovering History in China', 1984), because it was written during an era when many scholars believed that China only made advances toward modernity in a response to the Western onslaught, it is nonetheless a classic in the field of Sinology. Therefore I felt it needed a more thorough review.

According to Levenson's analysis, the China that had existed for thousands of years, the Confucian China, had become stagnant and unable to deal with the modernity that accompanied the second coming of the West to China in the middle and late 1800's. The West, he argued, was the prelude to China's modern transformation, one that had no room for Confucian precepts.

The most refuted sections of the book concerns his discussion on substance (ti) and function (yong), which is taken from Zhang Zidong's (1837-1909) catchphrase, "Chinese learning as substance and Western learning as function", Levenson states that the more the Chinese used the Western model as the 'yong' the more 'ti' (Confucian learning) became irrelevant to Chinese reality.

"Chinese learning, which was to be the 'ti' in the new syncretic culture, was the learning of a society which had always used it for 'yong', as the necessary passport to the best of all careers. Western learning, when sought as 'yong' did not supplement Chinese learning- as the neat formula would have it do- but began to supplant it. For in reality, Chinese learning had come to be prized as substance because of its function and when its function was usurped, the learing withered. The more Western learning came to be accepted as the practical instrument of life and power, the more Confucianism ceased to be 'ti', essence, the naturally believed-in value of a civilization without rival, and became instead an historical inheritance, preserved, if at all, as a romantic token of no surrender to a foreign rival which had changed the essence of Chinese life." (vol. I, p.61)

This view is a continuation and elaboration of his argument in an earlier work, "Liang Qichao and the Mind of Modern China" (1953). In this work he states; "Confucianism, after so many centuries, had at last been drained of any relevance to Chinese reality" (pp. 84-85). In both works Levenson questioned if there could be true deliverance from the past while holding on holistically to culture. In volume three of "Confucian China and its Modern Fate", he seems to give us his answer by implying that the Communist had been able to take Confucianism, once an ideology in action, and place it in the museum of history.

While Levenson is a product of the time when scholars mostly viewed China as being forced to modernize in response to the Western threat, his analysis does not fall into the trap of considering the West as being superior.

Toy Medium: Materialism and Modern Lyric, by Daniel Tiffany

What begins with an unlikely collection of unrelated phenomena--mechanical dolls, weather, atoms, lyric poetry--blossoms in the course of Toy Medium into a subtle and persuasive meditation on one of Western philosophy's biggest puzzles: the relation of mind and matter. What is the role of the imagination in defining material substance? In a dazzling study of the poetics of materialist philosophy and of the materialism of lyric poetry, Daniel Tiffany traces the historical conjunction of matter and metaphor through a remarkable range of topics: automata in classical antiquity and the eighteenth century; Kepler's treatise on snowflakes; animal magnetism; fireworks and cloud-chamber photographs; the origins of the microscope as a philosophical toy and its bearing on the figure of the virtuoso. At critical junctures in modern Western culture, Tiffany finds uncanny parallels between the metaphorics of science and visions of material substance rooted in popular culture and lyric poetry.

Review
Included in the "Los Angeles Times Book Review's "Best Nonfiction of 2000."

From the Inside Flap
"In this bold, speculative, and immensely learned study . . . Tiffany[‘s concept of] lyric substance--the ‘sense’ of materiality supplied to us by poets like Wallace Stevens and Marianne Moore--constitutes a world whose inaccessibility is legitimized by the principles of scientific materialism. Thus lyric, too long on the periphery of materialist discourse, emerges as being squarely in its center."—Marjorie Perloff, Stanford University, author of The Futurist Moment and Wittgenstein’s Ladder

"A lyrical inquiry into the circle of ideas: materialism, science, poetics. Winding through the whole is a fascinating exploration of toys--children’s toys, physicists’ toy models, philosophers’ robots, nuclear weaponeers’ toy towns. . . . My hope is that this book will contribute to a growing interest not in cleaving science from the arts but rather in exploring, poetically, the language, images and things that illuminate both." —Peter Galison, Mallinckrodt Professor of the History of Science and Physics, Harvard University

"A brilliant achievement, synthesizing the history of science and poetics, technology and the arts, in an iconology of materialism. . . All that is solid melts into air in this book, but just as quickly the airy poems of our climate condense into material, objective forms, weird gadgets, and objects of scientific research. . . A wonderful feast of learning and wit." —W. J. T. Mitchell, University of Chicago, author of Picture Theory and Iconology

"In clear-eyed and gorgeous prose, Toy Medium moves the question of Art's encounter with Science to an utterly original point of conflagration: where matter is mostly not matter. . . . Going to the bottom of the Imagination, where it still truly involves images, Tiffany explores how we have learned to see the inscrutable via our imagistic grasp of materiality. . . . This book is daring, brilliant, and deeply clever."—Jorie Graham, Boylston Professor of English, Harvard University, author of Materialism and winner of the Pulitzer Prize
