Writing and Rebellion: England in 1381 (The New Historicism: Studies in Cultural Poetics), by Steven Justice

In this compelling account of the "peasants' revolt" of 1381, in which rebels burned hundreds of official archives and attacked other symbols of authority, Steven Justice demonstrates that the rebellion was not an uncontrolled, inarticulate explosion of peasant resentment but an informed and tactical claim to literacy and rule.

Focusing on six brief, enigmatic texts written by the rebels themselves, Justice places the English peasantry within a public discourse from which historians, both medieval and modern, have thus far excluded them. He recreates the imaginative world of medieval villagers—how they worked and governed themselves, how they used official communications in unofficial ways, and how they produced a disciplined insurgent ideology.

A Well Written Look at Literacy and Social Protest
By jessbcuz
I read this book in preparation for a presentation on the Peasant's Revolt in a Master's level late medieval literature class. Recommended by my professor, I was at first leary, expecting a dry account of an historical event I was sure I would find irrelavant and boring. Much to my surprise, once I began reading, I became very interested in this early social movement. Justice's book presented me with a good grasp of the events and motivations, but is apparently also his own unique read on those events, making it interesting to more era-knowlegable readers.

Particularly his focus on literacy and the idea that by posting the letters (what, as one of the other reviewer's points out, Justice likens to broadsides) there was an attempt at legitimization through literacy of their voice and cause. Justice further points out that we must be sensitve to the many levels of literacy, highlighting how one literate family member could function to make the entire family literate and thereby opening up access to a larger social world. This book also provided an interesting look at how social control and literacy control can be linked through the church and other disseminators of information.

Interesting read, and very accessible. A great introduction to this event that should be looked at more often.

Permitting a Voice
By J. Forbes
In his rethinking of chronicled history, Justice takes his reader on a journey through both high and low "literature" and reconfigures the images, motives, and voice of England's Peasant's Rebellion of 1381. He beautifully argues that the peasants rebelled not to tear down the English monarchy (in fact, many maintained their loyalty throughout), but to enable equal access to textual culture, written history, and a cultural voice. By mentioning the influence of Langland, Gower, and Chaucer's writings in the Rebellion, Justice demonstrates that the peasants did not wish to eliminate written culture because they did not understand it, but to re-write (or re-evaluate) it because they could identify with it. Justice truly does justice to the degree of social dynamism and movement during the turbulent fourteenth century.

close reading and everyday history
By L. Wagner
Steven Justice begins by examining a handful of documents representing the views of the peasant rebels who tried to depose corrupt officials and destroy land records. From the letters themselves (which he concludes were early broadsheets), Justice reasons and writes beautifully to reanimate daily life at the time of the rebellion (land use and functional literacy among the peasants who rebelled). He also identifies echoes of the rebellion in Chaucer and of Langland in the rebellion, as well as an analysis of John Wyclif's possible motivation of the rebels. Thought-provoking, vivid history. A map would be a nice addition if the book is reprinted.

California Native Gardening: A Month-by-Month Guide, by Helen Popper

This is the first month-by-month guide to gardening with native plants in a state that follows a unique, nontraditional seasonal rhythm. Beginning in October, when much of California leaves the dry season behind and prepares for its own green “spring,” Helen Popper provides detailed, calendar-based information for both beginning and experienced native gardeners. Each month’s chapter lists gardening tasks, including repeated tasks and those specific to each season. Popper offers planting and design ideas, and explains core gardening techniques such as pruning, mulching, and propagating. She tells how to use native plants in traditional garden styles, including Japanese, herb, and formal gardens, and recommends places for viewing natives. An essential year-round companion, this beautifully written and illustrated book nurtures the twin delights of seeing wild plants in the garden and garden plants in the wild.

Helpful, well-organized and beautiful
By Jose
Popper's book is the first guide to the annual cycles of caring for our native plants, and it will be especially welcome to those who have just begun to appreciate these beauties by adding them to their gardens.

The California garden year begins in the fall with the start of our rainy season, so it makes sense that the first monthly chapter is October. Each month has its own chores: planting wildflowers, pruning shrubs, cleaning up dead limbs, watering if needed, etc. It's very handy to have these monthly chapters to help us organize and prioritize what we will be doing. The title chapters capture the year in a nutshell: October: Change in the Air, November: Spring is Here, February: Clean and Weed, May: Collect Your Seeds, etc.

Popper's planting advice is practical and her friendly tone is like a conversation with a more experienced friend. In October she encourages us to avoid the pitfall of "an instant filled-in look" by not buying large plants and, instead, to "space large plants appropriately and fill in with annuals or low, fast-growing native perennials that are either short lived or easy to pull out later." For May her advice is to allow some wildflowers to set seeds, both for more plants next year and to attract seed-eating birds. July's advice includes suggestions for reducing the risk of wildfires by removing "accumulated leaves and needles from the roof and gutters," trimming trees so they don't touch buildings, and "removing limbs below six feet" to slow the spread of fires.

A chapter on Native Garden Styles includes discussions of herb gardens, Japanese gardens, cottage gardens, etc. Especially handsome photos illustrate this useful book, and remind us that native plants belong in all kinds of garden settings. A guide to when to take cuttings for propagation, bibliography, and other useful reference material is included.

This useful book should be close at hand as you plan your garden chores and make lists of what to add to your garden during the coming year.

What a fantastic book
By bookworm3152
This is a really well done book. The pictures, descriptions, and friendly writing style make this an enjoyable read. I especially appreciated the practical advice for problems with gophers, weeds, etc. The book is subdivided into monthly chapters, which makes it really easy to follow - I can simply dive into the current month, and save the nonrelevant material for later. Being a nature lover myself, I felt like I lived through an entire year's season of gardening - it's that friendly! I'm definitely planning on getting more as gifts for friends and family.

Reframing Rembrandt: Jews and the Christian Image in Seventeenth-Century Amsterdam, by Michæl Zell

This richly detailed study reconceptualizes a striking but enigmatic moment in Rembrandt's art from the 1650s--one of the artist's most prolific and creative periods. Michael Zell identifies a significant theological shift in Rembrandt's use of religious imagery and interprets this shift in light of the unique religious and social conditions of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Rembrandt's biblical art has generally been regarded as the embodiment of a Protestant aesthetic. By looking closely at the artist's relationship with his patron Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel and the ideas of a group of "philosemitic" Protestants with whom the rabbi was engaged in an apologetic dialogue, Zell deepens and complicates our understanding of Rembrandt's sacred art from this period.

Review
"Michael Zell offers a nuanced, richly documented account of Rembrandt as master of pictorial exegesis, whose biblical works of the 1650s reflect intensively on the relation between law and grace, Temple and Gospel, the Old and New Covenants. Featuring more than two hundred in-depth winery profiles, this definitive guide is the best single source of information on world-renowned pinot noirs from California and Oregon. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of a grape variety considered by many to produce the ultimate food wine, John Winthrop Haeger offers this expanded, updated companion volume to his award-winning North American Pinot Noir. Here, with three times the number of winery profiles, he focuses exclusively on what he calls the Pacific Pinot Zone, stretching from the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon to Santa Barbara in California and extending up to thirty miles inland. An introductory essay provides an indispensable view of pinot noir in the United States—including the dramatic effect that the movie Sideways has had on its sales and production.

Pacific Pinot Noir features:

* Detailed descriptive tasting notes and selected vertical tastings

* At-a-glance graphics conveying information on tasting rooms, prices, and production for each winery

* Regional maps showing key viticultural areas

* Contact information for each winery

A Good Book But Not Perfect!
By Christopher Barrett
I live in Portland and am in the wine business, so of course I own a copy of this book.

The pros:

It does contain a good number of wineries and highlights their history briefly.
The text also contains contact information for a number of wineries, which proves useful.

Cons:

There is a lot of space dedicated to tasting notes on individual wines, my beef with this is that these notes become obsolete quickly. I would have preferred more detail on the history of the individual wineries and producers.

A lot of the information in this book is of use for those looking for a little light reading on NW pinot noir, but it pales in comparison to the amount of information in the Oregon Pinot Camp pamphlet.

Best guide to pinot producers in US, but getting a little dated
By Sitting in Seattle
If you are a fan of new world Pinot Noir, you will find new producers of interest here, and that makes this volume well worth the price. In this volume, Haeger follows up his benchmark North American Pinot Noir (NAPN) and covers only the Pacific coast region with many more winery profiles, more recent tasting notes, and coverage of almost all of the important players.

Unlike the earlier NAPN, which focused more on history and the story of American PN, the present book is primarily a guide to wineries and their wines. In the introduction, Haeger describes the Pacific region in some detail and develops the "consensus" protocol of winemaking. Following that, most of the volume consists of 2-3 pages on individual wineries, their vineyards and winemaking procedure insofar as they differ from the consensus protocol, and tasting notes on their wines.

The primary limitation of the book is that it was published in 2008 and thus the specific tasting notes are most relevant for vintages up to about 2005. If you have older PN in your cellar, it will be a great companion to them. However, it is still valuable for later vintages, since many of the vineyards, sources, and general tasting profiles are consistent. It is also fascinating to read the stories of the wineries.

Perhaps the best use of the book is to find new producers. Haeger notes his favorites, but even more importantly, the extensive tasting notes will certainly point you to wines and wineries that interest you. It's a great way to find new places to visit or purchase.

Overall, it's slightly dated but well worth the investment if you love California, Oregon, or BC Pinot. Cheers!

Land of the Tiger: A Natural History of the Indian Subcontinent, by Valmik Thapar

The extraordinarily diverse Indian subcontinent covers a vast area extending from Pakistan in the west to Bangladesh in the east and stretching north to the Himalayan kingdoms of Bhutan and Nepal. Marked by dramatic extremes of climate and terrain, it is home to black bears, snow leopards, elephants, and flying lizards, and it is the only place in the world where both lions and tigers reside.

After a lifetime devoted to the study and conservation of the tiger, Valmik Thapar turns his attention to the plants and animals that share the tiger's domain. How have so many species survived on such a crowded continent, where twenty percent of the world's population exerts intense pressure on the environment? Thapar links the region's tremendous diversity to the reverence shown to nature by Eastern religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. But fifty years after India's independence, modern and urban values are seriously eroding the subcontinent's ecosystems.

Thapar's careful natural history is enriched by his personal anecdotes and musings on spirituality and culture. His own reverence for the wildlife and landscape he encounters and his brilliant photographs make this book an enthralling read, and it is also a moving argument for more vigilant nature conservation on the Indian subcontinent.

Amazon.com Review
In this companion volume to the BBC/PBS television series, Indian biologist Valmik Thapar, a specialist on tigers, takes a leisurely look at the extraordinary animals that inhabit the subcontinent, among them serpent eagles and kiangs, water monitors and one-horned rhinoceroses, cobras and bustards. Although India and the adjoining countries are crowded with humans, and although wildlife-protection laws are a recent development there, animal life continues to thrive; the diversity of flora and fauna, Thapar writes, are the richest in the world. He attributes this uncommon variety of species to religious beliefs that accord the living world an uncommon respect and reverence. Anyone planning a visit to India will benefit from this lively book, as will those who are merely curious.

From Booklist
An excellent introduction to an area that most people know little about, this book accompanies a PBS series to be broadcast in fall 1998. Thapar is an expert on tigers and has authored a number of books on the largest of the big cats. In his dual roles as author of this work and presenter of the PBS series, he introduces the reader/viewer to a region encompassing Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Indian Ocean. The wide diversity of life in this region is due to the broad variety of climates, from desert to tropical forest and from snowy mountains to ocean islands. India alone boasts 1,200 bird and 340 mammal species. The compelling, thoughtfully illustrated text blends excerpts from the author's field notes with discussions of the spiritual place of animals in the region and quotes from early natural historians. An extensive bibliography will be extremely useful for those who want to explore further and helps recommend this book for all libraries. Nancy Bent

The perfect accompaniment to the video.
By A Customer
This book has some of the best photography I have ever seen. It is an in detail look at the various wildlife of India. From the magnificent tiger to the crocodiles and birds that inhabit the vast natural habitats of this wonderous sub-continent. No one would believe that India was so beautiful. But most of all it takes and in depth look at the one true King of the Asian Jungle- the mighty tiger. And who better to write about them than the tiger guru Valmik Thapar. It is WELL worth the read but get the video first.

Gorgeous and highly informative book on Indian and regional wildlife
By Tim F. Martin
_Land of the Tiger: A Natural History of the Indian Subcontinent_ by Valmik Thapar is a beautiful coffee table type book that I originally bought for its gorgeous full color photos of Indian wildlife and natural landscapes but ended up reading its fairly extensive text (and was glad I did so). Written to accompany a PBS television series (which unfortunately I have not seen), it is a great non-specialist introduction to the wildlife of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, and Bangladesh.

The introduction noted the very rich biodiversity of the subcontinent (2000 fish species, 1200 bird species, and 340 mammal species for instance) and focused on why wildlife has done as well as it has in a region of 1.2 billion people. Despite the growing influx of Western television and consumerism, religion and its respect for many wild animals remains a powerful force, particularly among rural areas and especially among the Hindu population of India and the Buddhist population of Nepal. One particular group, the Jainists, have such a high regard for life that its members are against harming insects and cutting down trees (one Jainist sect, the Bishnoi of the Thar Desert, which Thapar detailed in a later chapter, even celebrate the martyrdom of some if its members years ago in an effort to save a grove of trees). Sacred groves are maintained throughout the subcontinent (which provide vital wildlife habitat), worship of tigers, elephants, monkeys, snakes, and peacocks (which Thapar provided some very interesting details on) have played a large role in their conservation, and many local communities have worked hard to protect local animals from poachers and have tolerated their consumption of some of their crops or livestock so great is their reverence for some species.

The second chapter explored the fauna of the icy mountains and arid plateaus of the Himalayas. The many melt-water fed bogs, marshes, and lakes of the region provide refuge for many migratory species such as the bar-headed goose and other waterfowl, while the region boasts year-round residents like the lammergeyer or bearded vulture, two species of crow-like birds called choughs (both species of which have been observed on the peak of Mount Everest), and several pheasant species such as the chir pheasant and western tragopan. Other animals discussed were Himalayan brown and black bears, yak, black-necked cranes, snow leopards, bharal or blue sheep (favorite prey of snow leopards, taxonomically according to some experts somewhere between sheep and goats), Himalayan ibexes, Himalayan tahr (a mountain goat), musk deer, kiang or Tibetan wild ass, leopards, Tibetan wolves, dholes or Indian wild dogs, Himalayan lynxes, and the tiger (a recent arrival). In the lush forests of the lower, eastern Himalaya one can find many orchid species, satyr tragopans, blood pheasants, red pandas, and the golden langur.

Chapter three was titled "Sacred Waters" and covered life in the great Indian rivers, river valleys, and flood plains. One of the most fertile of these areas is the terai, a 60 kilometer-wide flat marshy strip that stretches 1,600 kilometers across the Gangetic plain in northern India and parts of Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, home to tigers, elephants, swamp deer, Indian rhinos, marsh crocodiles or muggers, and many other species. Highlights include coverage of India's seven stork and nine eagle species, the migratory fish known as the mahseer, the black soft-shelled turtle (a sacred species, known only from one location, a shrine in Bangladesh), Gangetic freshwater dolphins, the gharial (a species of crocodilian, the male is distinguished by a growth called a ghara on the tip of its snout, which in Hindi means "earthen pot"), and hog and swamp deer (which cannot graze in areas where the grass grows too high and are dependent upon such animals as elephants, rhinos, and wild buffalo for opening up the terrain).

Chapter four was on the wildlife of the sea, coasts, and nearby islands and focused in particular on sea turtles, flamingos, the interesting Andamanese and Nicobarese island peoples (the latter group believes that their ultimate ancestors were a man and a female dog), sea snakes, dugongs, the megapode (a bird species that uses the heat of decaying vegetation in mounds it creates to incubate its eggs), various monitor species (one of which, the water monitor, is known to lay its eggs in megapode nests), various crab species, and the Bombay duck, a member of the salmon family and a major food fish on India's western coast.

The next chapter examined desert wildlife. Very interesting to me were the black buck (a very fast herbivore that evolved to evade the now locally extinct cheetah, this species has a prominent place in Hindu mythology), the chinkara or Indian gazelle, the caracal (or "gazelle cat," which like the cheetah was once trained to hunt), and the Gir lion.

The following chapter was titled "Wet Forests" and covered the evergreen forests of India, which annually get drenched by the monsoon. A wonderful chapter, this section covered sacred groves called kavu; the shola (patches of montane evergreen forest, interspersed with open grassland, a naturally occurred feature); flying frogs, lizards, and snakes; the fascinating life cycles of the fig wasp and the hornbill; as well as lion-tail macaques, Nilgiri langurs, Malabar giant squirrels, Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri martens (all found in the wet forest of the Western Ghats) and the hoolock gibbon, clouded leopard, golden cat, and binturong (found in the very wet forests of northeastern India).

The final chapter analyzed the life habits of the tiger and its associated fauna, both in the drier, desert-edge environs of Ranthambhore National Park in Rajasthan and the moist bamboo forests of Madhya Pradesh - "Kipling Country," land of the _Jungle Books_. In addition to lots of information on tigers, the author covered sloth bears, gaur or giant ox, the sambar (largest of the Asiatic deer), nilgai or blue cow (India's largest antelope), cobras, peacocks, and elephants.

The epilogue was brief and basically general comments by the author on the troubled future of the region's wildlife.
