Fish's Take on Milton

Fish expands on the act of a text's self-consumption" by applying the same strategies to himself. He sees what a text "does" and declares that this doing is the meaning. But, unlike in Self-Consuming Artifacts, Fish is not content to let only the artifact self-destruct. Now he takes back much of what he has just said concerning that text's meaning; in a sense, he is now the artifact consuming himself. In Living Temple, he distinguishes between persuading the reader as to the validity of an interpretation and an over-reliance on merely demonstrating it.
