About the Author
Judy George is the Chairman and CEO of Domain, the Boston-based home furnishings chain (web site: www.domain-home.com/). Todd Lyon has written many books about creative living, including The New Year's Eve Compendium, Chic Simple: Cooking, and Chic Simple: Paint. At last...a home decorating book that is actually fun and leads you on the path to making your home feel like "home!" I brought the quiz portion of The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design to my book group and all six of us enjoyed it tremendously. I've found most decorating books to be off-putting in terms of making me feel like someone else was imposing their taste on me...but Judy George and her co-author made me feel that the eclectic blend of stuff in my condo was just fine, thank you, because it was ME! If you are looking for some fresh decorating ideas that will please you and not some unknown taste arbiter, this is the book for you.

Unique approach to style

This unique book addresses decorating styles based on personality - the visionary, the artisan, the idealist and the adventurer. It contains quizzes to test your style and then shows examples of each type of room for each of the four styles. I liked the page of each style section that states -"You may be an artisan if ..." and it lists different traits. Also at the end of each style is the alphabet for each style - and it gives buzz words for each style. Very unique and creative; fun to read with good ideas.

This is an intelligent, witty, gorgeous book of interior design. It's based on the theory that there are roughly 4 personality types (the reader takes an immensely satisfying quiz to determine his/her type(s)), and it offers decorating ideas--illustrated by sumptuous photos--for all 4 types, in all major rooms of the house or apartment. No dorky kountry kitsch, no impossibly impractical avant-garde posturing. Just beautiful, practical, hip decorating ideas from a variety of personality perspectives. I love this book.

A century and a quarter ago, the national park idea was born when Abraham Lincoln signed legislation setting aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias "for public use, resort, and recreation inalienable for all time." Over the next decade, the Yosemite park commissioners had to fight private land claims to the valley. By 1890, however, a public park system was firmly established in California when the Yosemite high country and much of what is now Sequoia and King's Canyon National Parks were set aside as federally protected, public preserves.

This collection of essays and photographs, originally published as a special issue of California History, documents the creation and management of California's first three national parks. As the essays remind us, the issues of park development so hotly debated today were raised first in Yosemite nearly a century ago. Yosemite's significance in landscape art, its role in the development of western tourism, and its promotion as one of the great icons of American culture are among the other major themes discussed here.

National Park and Big Tree History

This California Historical Society book is a republication of seven essays originally published in California History journal. The timing was the centennial of Sequoia NP being named the second national park in 1890. Only two chapters iterate Sequoia and Kings Canyon history, including political wranglings, and most of the book is devoted to Yosemite. Essays address early and twentieth century Yosemite tourism, nineteenth century painters and photographers, the conservationist Joseph Grinnell, building construction at Yosemite, and the founding of Kings Canyon NP. Authors are academics from many fields, including art history and historical geography. Awesome black and white photographs grace the text. This is a high quality paperback from University of California Press. I very highly recommend this book to all lovers of the three jewels of the national park system.

The Erotic Charge of Big Ecology

In reflecting back on the International Biological Program (IBP) one of the largest of the early attempts to co-ordinate ecological and environmental research on a global scale - Big Ecology, as Dave Coleman, Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia calls such projects - Coleman recalls how the months away in the field and at project meetings, led to certain temptations. Temptations were succumbed to, liaisons formed, divorces ensued, but the progress of the science marched on.

Coleman in his latest book Big Ecology - the Emergence of Ecosystem Ecology, University of California Press (2010) (buy it here) provides a fascinating account of the background to large-scale ecosystem studies around the world, but especially in the United States. He points to the antecedent trends, provides rich insights into the contentious, but nonetheless highly productive IBP program, gives the ultimate insider's guide to the National Science Foundation's Long-term Ecological Research Program (LTER) and points to directions for newer programs like the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON).

Perhaps this may sound a little dusty to you. To look at, large-scale ecosystems experiments often have appearances that only a mother could love, and to scientists not directly engaged in them they may seem like an ungainly older sibling that their parents lavish too many resources on. And indeed that may be so, but they are nevertheless fascinating human enterprises. The social architecture is complex, the scope extensive, and the promise is very rich, if only because our environmental challenges are no longer just local (if ever they were). No one is in a better position to provide a field-guide to the Daedalian labyrinth of Big Ecology than Coleman who lead the Coweeta Hydrologic Lab LTER efforts from 1996 - 2000 (which overlapped with my time at the University of Georgia). However his research work in soil ecology stretched back IBP days. I recall from Frank Golley's book on the Ecosystem concept that Dave was the first researcher in the US Grassland Biome IBP to get independently funded by NSF as part of the IBP program. He thus knows that of which he writes.

I worked as a post-doc for four years with Coleman and one of his primary collaborators Dac Crossley Jr between 1994-1998. What strikes me in retrospect is that with these fellows I not only learned by ecosystems ecology (I was primarily a decomposition guy back then) but also learned the interdisciplinary ropes. Dac, who is enjoying a flourishing post-retirement career as a writer of westerns, had at that time eclectic and entertaining interests, and Dave had keen insights into how a complex group of people can be brought together to undertaken a complex set of projects under the LTER. This training has paid dividends to me in my subsequent career as an interdisciplinary researcher.

So, please, take a look at this book. I think you will learn some things. Things about ecology, things about collaboration, and things about people. With many pleasing vignettes of the scientists involved in the work, and the administrators within NSF that tended to these program, the reader gets a change to poke their head behind the scenes in a way that historians of such topics may not always capture.

I guess that by the time I was doing Big Ecology, the erotic change, perhaps thankfully, had dissipated from the game. Nevertheless, Coleman's account manages not only to reflect upon past success and failings (both scientific and personal), and should be read as a scientific history but it should also be read by all those interested in the future of ecology and the environment; that is, frankly, it should be read by all of us. It is a rich book.

Dave knows ecosystems

Ecosystem science - the study of man's environments, how they work, how to manage them - developed in the 1970's into a full-fledged attempt on a big scale. Dave Coleman's account of the way these gigantic programs were assembled - what they discovered - what it means for our future - is laid out in this volume, Big Ecology. Coleman was involved with the beginnings of the International Biological Programme in Europe. He recounts his personal experiences in the grasslands program in the US, the story of the interplay of personalities that drove the science. Later, in charge of a major eastern US Long-Term Ecological Research program, he expanded his insight into the interactions of people, paradigms, and procedures that continue to yield important bases for managing our environments.

Big Ecology should be required reading for students and others concerned about environmental science on a planet-wide scale. As politics and scientific information continue to collide, a grasp of the issues involved becomes essential. Dave Coleman's volume is a good start.

An excellent beginning account of many topics, but the book needs a glossary

DEATH VALLEY by Charles B. Hunt is a 234-page geology book printed on high quality paper. The book contains about 120 black and white photographs, as well as several line drawings and maps. Death Valley is located about 3 ½ hours north, by automobile, of Los Angeles. Death Valley is bordered on the west by PANAMINT MOUNTAINS and on the east by BLACK MOUNTAINS. In early 2013, I spent three days in Death Valley, from 7 am to 5 pm, exploring the Mesquite Dune field, Golden Canyon, Ubehebe Crater, Badwater, Zabriskie Point, Mosaic Canyon, Devil's Cornfield, and the volcanic hills between Jubilee Pass and Salisbury Pass. Although I bought this book in 1976, it was not until about 35 years later that I actually toured Death Valley in detail. This accounts for my revived interest in the book.

CHAPTERS. The book has ten chapters, including: Water (Ch. 2); Salt Pan (Ch. 3); Gravel Fans (Ch. 4); Rocks (Ch. 5); Earthquakes (Ch. 6) (actually this chapter has the strange name, "How the Rocks Broke;" Mines and Mining (Ch. 7); Archaeology of Indians (Ch. 8); Archaeology since 1849 (Ch. 9); and Plants and Animals (Ch. 10).

PHOTOGRAPHS. Page 46 has a photo of Devil's Golf course, and the legend explains that this feature of Death Valley (DV) is in the central chloride zone. The text details the chemistry and formation of the chloride zone, sulfate zone, and carbonate zone. Page 51 shows a close-up photo of a gypsum deposit (calcium sulfate) which takes the form of thick worms. Continuing with the disclosure of the three zones, pages 52-53 show close-up photos of carbonate deposits (calcium carbonate; calcite). Page 57 has a photograph of the amazing pentagons found at BADWATER. Page 57 has a second photo, also located in the BADWATER area, showing a subtle feature of pentagons that are older, namely, outward tilting of the pentagon walls to create a saucer-like formation that occupies the inside of the pentagons. Page 70 has a photo of an alluvial fan spilling from the BLACK MOUNTAINS. Page 98 has a photo of the multi-colored hills at Six Spring Canyon, where the legend explains that quartzite is light, dolomite above that is dark, the light layer above that is talc, the dark layer above that is diabase, and the light layer above that is noonday dolomite.

MORE PHOTOGRAPHS. Page 135 has a photo of COPPER CANYON area, with black ink lines on the photo showing two earthquake fault lines. Page 139 has a similar photo, with black ink lines on the photo showing faults, this one from Hanaupah Canyon. As noted above, page 51 shows the WORMS of GYPSUM, while page 148 has a photo of SPHERES of ULEXITE (sodium calcium borate). Page 161, 162, 165, and 169, show stone arrowheads and knives made by Indians living in DV during the past 10,000 years. (For reasons unknown, this book fails to identify the name of the most recent tribe of Indians to occupy DV, namely, the TIMBISHA INDIANS.)

LINE DRAWINGS. Page 68 contains line drawings of aerial view of seven ALLUVIAL FANS, e.g., Tucki Wash Fan, Hanaupah Canyon Fan, and Six Spring Canyon Fan. Page 121 has a line drawing showing another aerial view, indicating earthquake fault lines between the Panamint Mts. And the Black Mts. Plant photographs are also included, and the book illustrates burrowed (page 199), as well as the arrowweed (Pluchea sericea) found at Devil's Cornfield (page 204). The text provides a nice outline of plants that are very salt-tolerant (desert holly), partially salt tolerant (arrowweed), and not particularly salt-tolerant (mesquite), thus accounting for their habitats in DV. Further information on plants in DV can be found in PLANT ECOLOGY OF DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIA by Charles B. Hunt (U.S. Government Printing Office, Wash. D.C. (1966)).

TEXT. I will discuss only a couple of topics from the text, namely, ordering of salt deposition and alluvial fans. Pages 39-40 contain a table showing the chemical formula, trivial name, and location in DV, of thirty-seven (37) different salts. These include sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium chloride (KCl), trona (Na3H (CO3)2 * 2 H2O), calcite (CaCO3); gypsum (CaSO4 * 2 H2O); and borax (Na2B4O7 * 10 H2O). As one can see from the formula of borax, this salt is definitely NOT anhydrous! Please also note the salt that is called, "trona." Landscape photographers and other adventurers in southern California will be aware of the TRONA PINNACLES, located near the town of Trona. Page 43 contains another excellent table, this one providing side-by-side comparisons of pairs of salts that are identical, except in their degree of hydration. The text explains that the less hydrated forms are located on the surface of the playa where the temperatures are highest, while the more hydrated forms are located underground. We learn that as water evaporates, the first salt to fall out of solution and to precipitate is CaCO3. CaCO3 accumulates at the edges and at the very bottom of any lake or pond that evaporates ("carbonate zone"). Next to deposit are CaSO4 and Na2SO4 ("sulfate zone"). But if not much calcium is present, what deposits is Na2SO4 and Na2CO3. Finally, when nearly all of the water has evaporated, what deposits is NaCl, thus forming the "chloride zone." We learn that the gypsum deposits, which can be 5 feet thick, are covered with a 6-inch layer of anhydrous calcium sulfate (Chapter Three; pages 36 66). Chapter Four (pages 67-87) disclose the following about ALLUVIAL FANS. We learn that the alluvial fans coming off the BLACK MOUNTAINS are small, because the land on the east is sinking and because these mountains are small (2,000-4,000 ft.) and don't have much gravel to donate. In contrast, the alluvial fans coming from the PANAMINT MOUNTAINS to the west are large, because these mountains are tall (8,000-11,000 ft.). This chapter also points out the composition of the gravel in various fans, e.g., Trail Canyon has gravel made of quartzite and carbonate. Hanaupah Canyon has gravel that is 20% granite gravel, 60% quartzite, and 20% carbonate. The fan at Furnace Creek is 90% carbonate.

CONCLUSION. The book requires a small amount of chemistry background, for example, high school chemistry or freshman college chemistry. Also, it helps to have taken a geology course, in view of the fact that the book contains many terms used in geology, e.g., brecciated, anticline, fanglomerate, turtleback, travertine, Holocene, Pleistocene, Piocene, Triassic, Devonian, Cambrian, and so on. When I first read the book in 1976, I had taken a dozen college chemistry courses, but the only parts of the book to make an impression on me were the narratives on the ALLUVIAL FANS and on DESERT VARNISH. But now that I've toured the salt playa in Death Valley, the book's accounts of the three zones (chloride zone, sulfate zone, and carbonate zone) are much more meaningful to me. Moreover, now that I've actually seen the vast ALLUVIAL FANS coming off from the Panamint Mountains, the book's accounts of alluvial fans are also more meaningful. DEATH VALLEY by Charles Hunt is a short book. Thus, for further reading, I suggest the following additional sources: (1) N.J. Travis and E.J. Cocks. THE TINCAL TRAIL A HISTORY OF BORAX; (2) S.G. Spear. Death Valley Geology. Palomar College, Palomar, CA (87 pages); (3) Charles B. Hunt (1966) PLANT ECOLOGY OF DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIA (U.S. Goverment Printing Office). A good geologic review for the beginner

This book is a good review book for the novice geology fan or the most crusted old timmer. Good indepth explinations without much of the techno babble that can be associated with geology. Easy to fallow and understand. A good companion for those who do the Death Valley car tour. A must have.

Excellent, Informative, Extensively Researched

This book is a fascinating exploration of the intersection of visual hagiography and narrative throughout the high Middle Ages. Hahn's writing is lucid and clear, and her research and insights are impressive. Hahn's discussion of how imagery and narrative of saints' lives combine to impact the audience/viewer is scintillating, and her research is first-rate. For anyone interested in a serious, but very readable, discussion of hagiography and saints' lives, or anyone interested in how Medieval Christian art was made for and recieved by the religious viewer, I highly recommend this book. Five Stars and kudos to Hahn for an excellent book.
