Covering evolution from the worldwide fossil record, this lavishly illustrated source reflects the latest discoveries in paleontology, like early birds found in China and small hominids found in Indonesia. The book contains an introduction to evolution followed by chronologically arranged two-page spreads on “100 of the finest fossil sites.” Also found in the volume are a “Tree of Life” section that covers cladistics, an alphabetical gazetteer of the 100 sites, a species listing, a glossary, an index, and a foldout time line. The depictions of individual sites detail the ecosystem as documented by the fossils found there and include a time line and rich artwork, with numbers and icons keyed to accompanying captions and other information. Also on each page set is a map of the earth and the sea level at the time represented and a map showing the fossil site. The fauna and flora (if they survived in the fossil record) reflect the biodiversity of the ancient ecosystems and document evolution over time. Each spread also gives a list of species appearing in an illustration, which takes up most of the space. Not informative enough for a textbook, not pretty enough for a coffee table book

You've all heard the saying don't judge a book by it's cover. Well, that's what I would say here. The cover (a dramatic shot of a mudskipper) is one of the best for any evolution book I've ever seen. Unfortunately, the contents inside the book are not as good. The book seems like it's trying to be both a biology textbook and coffee table book at the same time, but succeeds at neither. The artwork consists of less than impressive drawings of ancient life, compared to the visually stunning computer-generated images of ancient animals in Prehistoric Life: The Definitive Visual History of Life on Earth. The text doesn't make up for the lack of visual appeal since it mostly consists of a few small paragraphs running along the bottom of the page. The book does explain a few key concepts about evolution, but it never goes deep enough to satisfy more curious readers. For a good textbook, I'd recommend Carl Zimmer's The Tangled Bank: An Introduction to Evolution. For a coffee table book on the same subject, Prehistoric Life: The Definitive Visual History of Life on Earth's layout and pictures are better.

Very Nice Book - Well Illustrated

I found this book to be well-written and very nicely illustrated with a unique presentation. The illustrations strive to depict not just the lifeforms, but also the environments in which they lived. In addition, the illustrations, done in a 'traditional' medium opposed to CGI, also blend into each other, creating a mural effect.

Each featured time depicts the animals (and to lesser degree plants), relates climate, then-and-now locations, and data of noteworthy signifigance. The only aspect in which the book could be viewed as falling short is perhaps the brevity on entries. Much of the information on a given lifeform is usually a paragraph or so. Simply knowing the size of creature would've been nice. Some of the illustrations do appear a bit 'stiff', but overall I preferred this book's approach over the similar Prehistoric Life: Definitive Guide book. I purchased both, and I recommend doing so as well, as the two books compliment one another.

Beautifully illustrated coffee table book

I don't understand the negative reviews for this book, which seem to criticize it for not being what the reviewer wanted it to be. Perhaps the problem is that both the cover and the "Look Inside" feature give a slightly misleading impression of what the book is about, since the sample pages only really show the introductory section. The heart of the book consists of 100 2-page spreads, each providing a panoramic full-color drawing of the environment, plants, and animals of a specific place at a specific time, based on the fossil record. The illustrations are roughly 7" x 19", with a timeline across the top of the pages as well as text and additional illustrations across the bottom. There is a pull-out in the back of the book, with a comprehensive timeline on one side, and on the other side is a miniature version of all the illustrations, linked together into an extensive panorama.

The illustrations may not be cutting-edge CG, but they're beautiful in their own right. Like the murals one commonly finds in natural history museums, they're very detailed and evocative of the time and place they represent. I also own the DK Prehistoric Life book, which another reviewer recommended in place of this one, and while I do like that book, it is primarily a catalog of individual creatures, with an illustration and a paragraph or two of text on each one. Evolution: The Story of Life focuses on specific fossil sites, and on all of the flora and fauna that existed at that site at a particular point in time. Comparing the two seems like apples and oranges to me. I recommend both books, since they provide different (equally interesting and appealing, in my opinion) approaches to the subject.

About the Author
Rosemary Jones Tung is Professor Emerita of Asian Art History, CUNY Staten Island, and former Curator of the Tibetan Museum there. Ilya Tolstoy led expeditions to central Asia; Brooke Dolan, educated at Princeton and Harvard, spoke several Tibetan dialects. In 1942 President Franklin Roosevelt sent them to Tibet on a diplomatic mission which yielded the photographs selected for this book.

Anthropology of the Islamic Sermon

Gaffney has great idea in his book. Write perhaps the only work on one of the most salient Islamic practices throughout history in a contemporary, quickly changing Muslim Society. Gaffney builds a basic typology of three types of preachers: the traditional scholar and ethical teacher, the sufi priest-magician, and the militant holy warrior. He analyzes sermons from all three and the religious aura and authority they carry with them in society. Gaffney demonstrates the authority that the preacher embodies in the larger society are closely connected with mundane institutions and organization of the society. He argues this both in the context of Cairo and Minya [which much more rural than Cairo]. Many of the sermons discussed were given during the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, and through them Gaffney traces the development of this militant movement and compares it with official Islam. Overall, this analysis cover ~2 decades of field experience, in the 70s and 80s. Finally, Gaffney presents and analyzes three actual sermons in their entirety, transcribed from recordings made in the mosques. Some of his insights are profound but I found myself annoyed by common debunking of the preachers' sermons. The author is a catholic minister [though also a professor at Notre Dame], and there are moments where there was a bit of unnecessary digression into Christian apology. This was frustrating insofar as I was more interested in an analysis of the symbolic appeal containned in the preachers' sermon rather than a correction of the factual errors contained therein. Nonetheless, it was an interesting approach and the first of its kind. I believe it would be fortuitous to do more studies of its kind.

To be clear, this is a guide to the history and present practice of winemaking in Tuscany and surrounding areas, and of the major wine estates in the area. The author is a Master of Wine, and he does offer opinions on some of the wines (many of them older vintages you can't buy) of each of the producers he covers. But this is not a guide listing hundreds of wines with descriptions and ratings; for that look elsewhere.

This is a great overview of how Central Italy became the important international force in wine it is today, and the people who have made it so. It also discusses the different regions of Central Italy, which grapes thrive where, how winemaking differs between them, and what to expect from the wines. I had planned to sample this book for selective information. Instead, I was drawn in and just read it through. If your interest in Italian wine goes beyond what to buy for dinner or order in a restaurant, this is a terrific book. It far exceeded the expectations I had when I ordered it. Best enjoyed with a good glass of wine!

About the Author
Catherine L. Benamou is Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She was Associate Producer and Senior Research Executive of It's All True: Based on an Unfinished Film by Orson Welles (Paramount Pictures 1993), and is lead consultant on the It's All True Film Preservation Project currently underway at the UCLA FIlm and Television Archive in Hollywood.

The definitive book about Orson Welles' most misunderstood project

The fact that Catherine L. Benamou's eye-opening and sometimes mind-blowing book about Orson Welles in Latin America happens to be academic shouldn't scare off anyone apart from a few timid anti-intellectuals. There are important discoveries to be found on virtually every page of this book, most of them couched in prose that to my taste goes down far easier than the fuming of "verfoleme" in his own review of this book. Of course you can single out graceless phrases in a good many books (as well as in a good many spiteful Amazon reviews) if that's what you're looking for--but why bother when there's so much to learn here? Benamou's factual nuggets and her critical and political insights place this book so far beyond most studies of Welles in any language, including English, that she radically revises the whole tenor of what scholars and journalists have been writing about "It's All True" for the past 65 years. You might even say that she permanently changes our discourse on the subject, and any scholar who does that deserves our deepest gratitude. And Benamou brings so much background knowledge to bear on the subject--not only about Welles, but also about Brazil and Brazilian culture, Pan-American history and film history--that we'll still be deriving pleasure and edification from this book for many decades to come.

important subject smothered in grotesque prose

"Textophagy"--better like the word, because you'll encounter dozens of such coinages "imbricated" (more fashionable terminology of this ilk) in the author's impenetrable prose: "Just as donning false noses and epidermises allowed Welles to take on significantly different personae while remaining easily recognizable to the public--thereby disclosing the fact of the prothesis to any viewer who had seen him in other performances--his recuperation of the lost work in progress does not involve erasure and forgetting, achieved through the decontextualization and compositional simulation (by way of suturing) of dismembered elements. Instead, it speaks to the reclamation and remembrance by way of bricolage of the text he had originally envisioned." It's the quaint, now antiquated thereobabble (to insert a coinage of my own) of humanities graduate schools in the late 1980s and 1990s. NYU (and the others) can't be entirely blamed for this--Benamou had adequate time to outgrow it in the decade between her 1997 dissertation and the publication of this book. (Also badly needed: a refresher course in the real-life economics of the film industry.) There's deep research behind this effort, and it yields up a wealth of invaluable new information on this pivotal project in Welles' career; let us hope that someone extracts it and blogs it in comprehensible form and that Benamou assents to the process (she holds the copyright): that, plus the reconstruction project of surviving footage she's heading in conjunction with UCLA Film/Television Archive, might turn out to be her most important contributions to Welles scholarship.
