Between 1901 and 1907 Alfred Kroeber, then a young professor at the University of California, Berkeley, made numerous trips into the country o the Yurok Indians, along the far northern California coast and inland on the lower Klamath River. The Yurok and their neighbors, the Hupa and the Karok, were the southernmost sharers of the great Northwest Coast Civilization. Kroeber, concentrating on the austere culture of Yurok, sought material artifacts for the University museum and collected Yurok myths,- tales of woe times, when the mythological heroes peopled the earth: the "never-eating" Pulekukwerek, the philandering Wohpekemeu, the scheming Coyote. From their informants Kroeber collected over 150 myths and variants, transcribing some in the original tongue, many on phonograph cylinders for later translation, and most in English through an interpreter. Over the years, as time form teaching and other research permitted, Kroeber worked at editing and annotating the myths. His death intervened as he neared the end of his task. Now, to mark the centennial of Kroeber's birth, the complete collection is published for the first time. Following Kroeber's plan, the myths told by each Yurok informant are grouped together. Each group is preceded by Kroeber's biographical and psychological study of the informant, and each tale is accompanied by Kroeber's explanatory notes. The book is Kroeber's final tribute to the Yurok. As Theodora Kroeber says in her Foreward, "They were the first California Indians he came to know, and they were the people and culture who most engaged his curiosity and attention."

Yurok Stories/Legends/Myths

Very interesting and informative. Offers insight into Yurok culture and values. I believe the Yurok tribe will be very well known someday, hopefully soon, as they are a very important part of our country's heritage and future. Please do not be close-minded when you read these stories, no matter the wording; remember how hard it can be to learn any language other than the one you grew up, especially if you were beaten for even speaking your language.

Same-Sex Affairs is a fascinating look at the rise of urban homosexuality in the early 20th Century.

The book is built around the 1912 YMCA Scandal in Portland, Ore., a little known and poorly documented story that dominated newspapers of the day, in particular E.W. Scripps' newspaper, The Portland News.

Using many never-before seen historical documents, this book details the politics and pressures in Progressive Era Portland on the homosexual community. Further, it shows that politics played a far bigger role than sexuality in the scandal.

An academic treatment of this important event, done in the finest fashion, Same-Sex Affairs is a great addition to any library.

Guston the thinker

Philip Guston, one of the most important artists of the XXth century had this rare ability of being able to talk about art as well as he made it. His vast culture enabled him to draw inspiration from everyone from the Renaissance masters (Piero della Francesca) to Italian modernists (de Chirico), from Kierkegaard to Kafka, from Beethoven to his close friend Morton Feldman, etc.

This book is a compendium of lectures, conversations, interviews, in which the artist delivers a vision about his world, about art, about mankind, that is one of the deepest I, as a reader, have encountered. There are also some vivid accounts of the artist's experiences with Renaissance art, such as his visits to Arezzo and the shock he received when first confronted with Piero's frescoes depicting the Legend of the Cross. I personally think that there is nothing better than to listen to an artist speak about another artist and this is precisely what this book enables us to do.

I beg to differ with the previous reviewer:this book is for everyone; for everyone interested in art, in thinking and in reading, and for everyone who can make the effort of going beyond the obvious. Guston was a great artist, but he also was a great thinker and a great talker.

pure genius

The best most exciting book I've read in a very long time about painting written from the inside. It is for artists and not art lovers. Guston's mind is a delightful place to be and he writes and speaks about painting with rigor, humor and honesty in a way that will force you to call into question your assumptions about what painting is. The interviews and transcripts of impromptu discussions are marvelous-- many published here for the first time. Why it took this long for this book to come out is a mystery. This stands alongside Picasso on Art, Matisse's writings on art, and Sylvester's interviews with Giacometti as one of the great documents of a 20th Century artist struggling with the question of what is possible.

I love everything excepting the price, considering the edition, printing and paper it has should't be that expensive.
Don't expect images, as the title says, its only text.

Cutthroat: Native Trout of the West by Patrick Trotter

This is an in-depth and geographically wide-ranging study of cutthroat trout in the Western USA. I'm still reading/studying the book. Some info relates to my Montana background, a lot does not. But it sure is interesting! Great cover painting; I'm not bragging but I caught them this size way back when!

A must for lovers of all things troutlike.

This book is a definate must for anyone interested in Cutthroat trout. Not the cooking and eating of , or the fishing for, but the trout themselves. It is a complete and detailed look at all known or possible subspecies of the Cutthroat trout from the Coastal species to Lahontan cutthroat to lesser known species such as the Paiute cutthroat.
The book is divided into 15 chapters, thirteen of which cover the various subspecies. Information on their native range, morphology, life history, current status, as well as their management (or mismanagement as the case may be) is included in each chapter. The first two chapters include an overview of the species as a whole, evolution, and prehistoric distributions. There is also a forward by Dr. Trout himself, Robert Behnke in which he gives his blessing to the book and adds much credibility to the information within.
One of the finest things about the book is its readability. Trotter is a fisherman turned biologist and the text reflects this by being unassuming yet very informative. I gave the book a 9 only because it suffers from a slight case of outdatedness as it was published in 1987. Much knowledge has been gained on the subject since, but the book is still a very important overview of Cutthroat trout ecology and noone who professes to understand salmonids should be caught without having read it.
I might add that Pat Trotter is currently working in the Seattle area as a salmonid ecology consultant. I have heard him speak and highly recomend him as a benefactor of the often neglected Cutthroat trout.

This is an awesome, in-depth description of the all the recognized and "proposed but as yet unnamed" subspecies of the great Western Trout, (Onchorynchus clarkii), known to so many through out the inter-mountain and coastal Western States. Life histories, maps of past and present ranges, accompanied with Tomelleri's incomparable illustrations all serve to illustrate this species-wide overview with literally VOLUMES of information from all the best sources. Benke... Jordan & Everman... literally ALL the best-known experts on salmonids, and especially the true trouts, are cited and their information compiled in a lengthy, though easy to read work that stands as THE authoritative work on Cutthroat. It will long be a treasured classic in my library.

Very British.Very Classic!

This book first published in 1997, will hold up for a long long time because the classic ideas offered by Nina are quite timeless.

Another word (besides "classic") to describe Nina's style of re-decorating is "opulent". The interiors that Nina was asked to remodel were very high end to begin with (eg: the 200 year old estate, or the Gothic mansion, etc), and in order for Nina to balance the architecture and existing furniture, Nina was able to carry out many color coordinated projects.

I gave this book 4 out of five stars only because I wish Nina had included some "Before" photos. She does describe the interiors' dilemmas in writing, before she engaged in her decorating projects, but a few photos would have helped the reader to visualize the transitions more appropriately. Also, some of the ideas are over the top for the average home owner, especially in terms of fabric combinations (eg: mixing Tartans with flowers and tiny fabric prints). But all in all this is a book that is worth having in a library, especially if the reader is an actual decorator or architect because Nina is a very famous name in the industry.

inspired reader who wants to "spread the word"

Equally at home on a living room coffee table or by a bedside, this book offers a welcomed escape for anyone who appreciates english style. It seems that the middle ground between the whimsical cottage style and the grand baronial castle look is often ignored. While I admit that Ms. Campbell definitely illustrates the latter, she also depicts several chapters which this jersey girl has the chance to emulate, i.e. small but stylish, elegance in the miniature. Her text is very informative; however, it is the well over one hundred photographs that will be of great help and inspiration. Reading this book is like commisioning "one of the best" at a true bargain price. A super addition to a collection or a defining starting point, get this book.

Gorgeous photographs of elegant homes

I have the English edition of this book (called Nina Campbell on Decorating), same number of pages, same copyright date, identical book size, inside look at how she worked with ten clients, so I believe it is the same book with a different title and cover picture (stuff that is typically altered when a book crosses the Atlantic).
The photographs are lovely, showed to their full advantage in this oversized book, accompanied by easy-to-read text that brought me into the dilemmas and solution process for each of the ten houses. Sometimes I disagreed with the results because decorating is a subjective art, but I loved discovering Nina's decorating philosophy. For example, on page 79 she says "Undoubtedly, my client will add paintings as he finds them. A house that is complete from the minute the owner walks in is not an ideal home. In the early stages a room needs to be 'en route,' as it were. You should be able to invite your friends to a party without being embarrassed that it's 'not quite finished."
Of course, Nina's comments also give us insight into how a designer works with a client, including some funny episodes such as the time she was confused about which way a painting a client owned should be hung - she thought vertical, and it turned out horizontal was the artist's intention!
Nina's style tends toward the formal and elegant, but anyone could learn from her approach to decorating. An enjoyable book to read, I'm looking forward to sharing it with some friends of mine who are designing a home - who could resist a wall of books in the study that is really a door? And her decorating tricks, such as lowering a high ceiling by painting it with a mottled texture, can be used by anyone.
