Top notch review of the Northern Rhone

The thinking person's alternative to The Emperor's '100 point grading system' tome on the Rhone. Livingstone-Learmonth provides a highly personal account of the vineyards, the growers and the wines, along with tasting notes and vintage profiles that reward style, character and finesse more than brutal extraction and sheer "hedonistic fruit bomb" amplitude -- a rare perspective on the wines from this sun-drenched part of France, the land where the pundits go to find big chunky monkey "special cuvee" reds and oily high alcohol whites slathered liberally (and uncharacteristically) in new oak. Rather than you-know-who's hyperbole about the "greatest in history" 2003 vintage, for example, Learmonth offers a thoughtful and even handed view that acknowledges the question marks surrounding the wines from that freakish growing season. In my humble view, this book is the English language reference standard on the northern Rhone, and a great follow up to Learmonth's earlier Faber publication on the northern and southern Rhone vineyards. My taste and my cellar are overwhelmingly skewed towards Burgundy, but this book sent me back down to my cellar to pull the corks on some older bottles of Cornas, St. Joseph, Cote Rotie and Hermitage and has me ready to lay down more of them -- and perhaps to head a bit further south on my next trip to France. A must have volume.

If You Love The N. Rhones, You Need This Book

Livingstone-Learmonth does a knock up job, has meticulously researched and what's more--- knows that you should make your drinking decisions by looking into the vigneron or negoc behind the wine and the way they work and not by looking at a score.

Who knew that a guidebook to the Rhone could not only be a necessary resource book but also a hell of a read? This is an in-depth and entertaining insight into a region that produces the ne plus ultra of syrah (yes, viognier and the other whites, but it's all about the syrah, isn't it?).

A Philosophical Tome - Not a Textbook

No...Schonberg's Harmonic works are not where anyone should start when trying to learn standard western harmony. Let's get that out in the open first. You should not read this book as a way to learn the rules of figured-bass style harmony. For that, better to read Piston. This book is a philosophical tome. As such, it is verbose, but it is also extremely instructive, mostly for the composer.
I first read the Theory of Harmony as a grad student. My composition teacher suggested it. (He was always correcting my chord spelling in ways that didn't make sense to me, until I read the Schonberg.) This book opened me to the "mystical" side of harmonic theory. It also was a great clarifier on the relationship between harmony and counterpoint in voice leading. And, most harmony texts really are based on the rules of Rameau, which amazingly work up until the post Wagnerian era, when they begin to break down. Schonberg's work is the best examination of post-Wagnerian tonal harmony that I've come across. So to me, this is more than an historical artifact, it is a useful tool for the experienced composer. But definately not for your usual undergrad!

A Masterpiece for every musician

This book is a must for a musician.
It is not a textbook. You need another standard one for this purpose. But it is essential as a companion, if you want to UNDERSTAND the reasons behind the rules. And you better read it in parallel with a standard textbook.
Schoenberg starts from the most ancient sources to the most modern and EXPLAINS everything! You are his pupil because this book was written for his real pupils. (And btw a 6th chord is a 6th chord for every classical harmony manual...).
I agree that sometimes some digressions may be questionable and some "rules" are introduced and then eliminated in a questionable way, but he is undoubtely an artist, and this book reflects it. The way he explains, for instance, the minor mode is unsurpassed.
You can't break harmony rules if you don't know what's behind them.

If you really do the work, you will learn harmony from this book

Even though I earned a degree in music composition, I never took a college level theory course. Why not? Because my score on the freshman theory entrance exam was high enough to test out of all four years of undergraduate theory classes. How was I able to do that? Because before I applied to music school I had carefully worked my way through this book. It took me nearly a year of hard effort but it really paid off, not only by saving me the money and drudgery of college theory courses but also by giving me a solid understanding of how harmony works and how to use it as a composer. I feel very indebted to this book for that.

I have a friend who is an even better testimonial for the effectiveness of this book. You see before I took that theory entrance exam, in addition to Schoenberg's book, I had also worked through a half dozen other books like Piston, Sessions, Fux and some other ones that I don't even remember now 30 years later. Because I had studied other books, it makes it impossible to say that I pulled off testing out of four years of theory solely due to working through Schoenberg's book (however, I'd insist that it was this book that made me really understand harmony).

On the other hand, my friend never went to music school and used only Schoenberg's Theory of Harmony to learn his harmony. He meticulously worked his way through every chapter and filled reams of music paper with exercises from the book. We co-owned a recording studio at the time and each day I would come in to work and find page after page of carefully worked out chord connection exercises that he had done according to Arnold's (as we affectionately referred to him) directions. Since that time, I have met very few musicians -- including many who have masters and PHDs in composition -- with as deep an understanding of harmony as my friend had developed and his compositions clearly demonstrate his facility with harmonic materials.

If you want a book to help you trudge through dull undergraduate theory classes, I am sure that there are better books out there for that purpose; but if you want to render all those classes superfluous, work your way conscientiously through this book. It will give you a rock solid foundation in common practice harmony/theory.

Also, don't ignore those parts where Schoenberg drifts off into his philosophy. You'd be missing out on the insights of one of the greatest musical minds of the 20th century! I loved those parts and got so much from them. After work, my friend and I would sit and drink a few beers and talk about our impressions of Arnold's philosophy... great fun if you are sort of a theory geek like we were back then. And speaking of beer - I see that this book is selling used for less than the price of a beer in a bar. Do yourself a favor and skip that last beer of the evening one night and spend those five bucks on a second hand copy of this book.

In any case, Schoenberg's book can teach you an awful lot about harmony but... you'll need to have a bit of self discipline because you WILL have to do the work to reap the benefits. (and old Arnold was pretty demanding)

About the Author
J. H. Parry (1914-1984) was educated at Cambridge and Harvard, taught at the University of the West Indies, the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and the University of Wales. He was appointed Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs at Harvard University in 1965. Among his many books are The Age of Reconnaissance and The Age of Discovery (California).

Useful and readable...

I had to read this book for a class regarding History of Latin America, and I found it to be both interesting and helpful. I read it quite quickly, and afterwards I decided to buy it (I had borrowed it from a friend).
Parry explains how the "Americas" were colonized by Spain, and what happened in the "New World" from the XVth to the XIXth century. The task is difficult, but he pulls it off incredibly well. The reader learns, but also enjoys reading "The Spanish Seaborne Empire", probably because J. H. Parry manages to make histoy appealing. In my opinion, that is the trademark of really good historians.
The book includes several illustrations and maps, and it is organized in five parts. Part I is about "The establishment of Empire", and part II deals with "The responsibilities of Empire" (for example, the spreading of the faith and law enforcement). Part III talks about "The cost of Empire" (demographic catastrophe, economic dependence, etc...), and part IV discusses "The endurance of Empire" (specially its growth and consequent need of reorganisation). Finally, part IV considers "The desintegration of Empire". The author wraps up the book nicely with a conclusion titled "The aftermath of Empire".
On the whole, I think this is a remarkably good book, that somehow ends up being both useful and readable. I can recommend it to students, but also to people who just want to read a good book about Latin American history :)
