Meet Joey One-Way: junkie, murderer, ex-convict. And the newest and brightest celebrity writer in the U.S. Rose's second novel (after Kill the Poor) is a satire of contemporary America, land of opportunity even for convicted murderers. While in prison for killing his wife (the mother of his twin daughters), Joey wrote a play about his experiences. The play became a Broadway hit and was optioned by a big-time Hollywood producer, who has worked the deal to spring Joey early so that he can write the screenplay. Staccato rhythms and street vernacular give the narrative a genuine, manic music as it tells of Joey's life on New York's streets, in prison and among the media elite as he has a fling with the wife of his producer sugar daddy. Though initially alluring, the rapid-fire voice (even when it adapts grammatically to a third-person point of view) never breaks free of the tight confines from which Joey sees the world. The satirical elements work best when they approach the ridiculous but don't cross the line. Rose's acid view of a celebrity- and media-driven society comes through in the mere setup of the book. But it runs into a cul-de-sac of the obvious when Joey begins talking about the World Wide Web and subsidiary rights at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The pace is relentless, and the descriptions are brutal. Sex and death drive the narrative from page one. That they occur in such liberal amounts?and that both author and narrator seem to derive so much pleasure in the telling?makes it hard to differentiate this novel from the hype-drenched landscape it purports to satirize. After 17 years in prison for killing his wife, Joey is released into the custody of a film producer who wants him to write a script of the play he wrote in prison, which became a Broadway hit. Joey gets involved with the producer's wife, broods over present and past guilt, and comes to a shockingly unexpected end. Rose's first novel, Kill the Poor (Atlantic Monthly, 1988), is also set on Manhattan's Lower East Side, an area Rose knows well. This cinematic look at the urban underside portrays characters through graphic sex and language but makes them hard to forget. For large collections and those interested in experimental writing.

Rose will kick your shins in.

Pick up a copy of "Kill, Kill, Faster, Faster" and you will finish in a day or two. Not just because it is a short read, but because Rose skillfully moves you between at least four separate worlds: Joey's past as husband, father and murderer; his experiences in prison; his present as a writer for a "gritty" TV crime series and a sometime violent criminal; and a future waiting for him that I won't reveal so as not to ruin a surprising ending.
Joey is a convict and an ex-heroin abuser who killed his wife in a jealous rage and has spent the last seventeen years in prison. While incarcerated he survives through a readiness to defend himself against assailants. He also succumbs to the sexual advances of a cellmate. It is this cellmate, however, that encourages him to make use of his time in prison by writing. Joey completes a script that makes it to the outside world and is a sensation. An established TV executive, Markie Mann, arranges for Joey to be released from prison with the idea that the writing ex-con will "juice up" the scripts for his shows.

Joey soons begins an affair with Fleur, the producer's wife. Fleur is a French woman who has herself spent time in prison for prostitution. She is attracted to Joey from the start and immediately sets out to seduce him. The lovers encounter an obstacle, however, because Joey is unable to consistently achieve intercouse with Fleur. The years in prison witnessing and participating in acts of violence and sexual liaisons have taken their toll. Fleur sticks with Joey for more than three months and the two of them develop a genuine love. This tenderness comes through rather subtly because Joey's wants are what necessarily take center stage in this novel. Those wants are a reconciliation with the twin daughters that he left behind and a hope to avoid the heroin that calls from every corner.
Rose is superb at presenting Joey's desperation. The ex-con is against the clock and Rose never lets us forget it. The novel covers the three months in Joey's life beginning with the limousine that picks him outside of prison in upstate New York and ending with his ultimate fate. Joey's life on the outside is rarely easy. He sleeps in a half-way house at night, and must confront his former mother-in-law in order to make contact with his daughters. At the office Markie and other writers mutilate the scripts that Joey sends them. To further complicate Joey's ability to cope, Markie has his own erotic adventures planned for his "discovery".
Rose's writing is suspenseful and brings to mind the sparsely effective prose of Manuel Puig. Rose writes from Joey's viewpoint and in his voice. The author is mostly effective in bringing this off, but occasionally Rose's erudition peaks through Joey's discourse. A minor flaw in an excellent work.
Rose also provides an insight into the creative process worth at least a dozen graduate papers. The script that earned Joey's release from prison results from the contribution of several of his fellow convicts. Joey freely admits this. His own contributions to the TV show, however, are erased altogether when his name is not included among the credits.

Depends on what you are looking for

Kill Kill Faster Faster is not a well written book, but I don't believe anyone claims it to be. The main character has basically lost his mind from drug and alcohol abuse and, unfortunately for those who enjoy literature, he writes the books like he is typing on cocaine. Literally, on cocaine - as if he is sitting on a bed made specifically of crack.

However, it is inarguably an original book, with an original way of writing. And he does this... well enough that he can get the book published, so he deserves some credit for that.

If you can find it free (or for .01 used as it appears to be on amazon) and you enjoy a book's originality, it may be worth reading if you have an hour to spare. It's fast enough you can finish it in an hour, and then you get to tell your friends how much you disliked it if need be without wasting too much of your free time.

Its all about the voice...

A messed-up guy gets involved with the wrong kind of woman and everyone goes straight to Hell as a consequence--its the oldest plot in the world, just think about the story of Adam & Eve. But it never runs out of gas; in a sense, its the only story worth telling.

In the end, I couldnt dislike this book inasmuch as its very similar in many respects to my own novel, *Hardcore Romeo.* But, in just as many ways, its vastly different--different from just about anything else youre likely to read. Its the writing style, the voice, of *Kill Kill Faster Faster* that is ultimately the key to whether you will like this book, or hate it. Rose employs a distinctive narrative dialect that can be viewed, depending on one's point-of-view, as either a powerful and compelling device to tell this story, or merely an annoying gimmick. As a reader, I was on the fence...sometimes addicted to the cadences of Joey One-Way, and other times thinking that he sounded a little like Tarzan. I dont know that I'd pay full-price for this one--in fact, Im glad I didnt--but it was well worth the buck I spent when I found it in the outdoor racks at the Strand. For less than a cup of Starbucks, it was well worth it. For more...maybe not.

The Rape of Nanjing was one of the worst atrocities committed during World War II. On December 13, 1937, the Japanese army captured the city of Nanjing, then the capital of wartime China. The book examines how the issue has developed as a political and diplomatic controversy in the five decades since World War II.

In his introduction, Joshua A. Fogel raises the significant moral and historiographical issues that frame the other essays. Mark Eykholt then provides an account of postwar Chinese responses to the massacre. Takashi Yoshida assesses the attempts to downplay the incident and its effects, providing a revealing analysis of Japanese debates over Japan's role in the world and the continuing ambivalence of many Japanese toward their defeat in World War II. In the concluding essay, Daqing Yang widens the scope of the discussion by comparing the Nanjing historiographic debates to similar debates in Germany over the nature of the Holocaust.

An Underrated and Valuable Book on the Massacre

This is a lesser known source among published Nanjing Massacre literature, but is well worth acquiring due to the variety of perspectives it offers in one book. I would say that any criticisms lodged here against this interesting work, from the typical Japanese Nationalists trolls whose primary ambition is to share their confusion with others, should be completely ignored.

Every legitimate WWII historian, including not a few brave scholars in present-day Japan, understand and accept the basic facts and figures surrounding the Nanjing Massacre and the trail of brutality that led from Shanghai in 1937-38. The documentation is extensive, from numerous Western eyewitness accounts to intercepted Japanese diplomatic cables. Magazine accounts of these events can easily be found in Western libraries and even on eBay. Yet Japanese nationalists want us to believe that a massive "conspiracy" has led to an "untrue version" of the Massacre. But the conspiracy rests solely with JAPAN, not the Allied Nations. Nationalists will point you to absurd Japanese press coverage of post-massacre Nanjing, which is nothing more than skewed occupation propaganda. Likewise, published revisionist accounts by Imperial Army officers in Nanjing, offered in defense of the nationalist position, are usually no more than denials or excusals for their own indifference during the Massacre.

The fact that a member of the Imperial House is accused of being a primary instigator of the Massacre is of utmost concern to Japanese nationalists. But the Nanjing Massacre should not be considered as unusual conduct for a Japanese military that also brutalized Manchuria, Hong Kong, and Singapore citizens, killed over 200,000 laborers on the Death Railway from Thailand to Burma, and ravaged innumerable Philippine villages, culminating in the Rape of Manila. The Imperial Army's abandonment of their own conscripted settlers in Manchuria and mass slaughter of Okinawans in 1945 also speaks of the evil that pervaded Japan's military before and during WWII. You can go to any of these places, talk to the survivors and still see physical evidence of Japanese military atrocities. Yet Japanese nationalists, often motivated by insecure needs to believe in a delusional glory of the past, deny anything that would place Japan's military actions in a bad light. The question is why citizens of the world should trust such revisionists who essentially possess the same arrogance and racism of the former militant regime which they extoll and worship? We should not.

While I have great fondness for Japanese culture and people, I am dismayed by the distorted histories that are still found today in their own schools. Many Japanese I talk to say they learn of Japan's real WWII past only in college. Japan today should not be judged by the ridiculous extremists who comment here and those old men in high places who try to suppress their national shame. The good news is that with more internationalization, young Japan is slowly coming to grips with their past. Recent TV doramas such as "Song of the Canefields" (reciting Imperial Army atrocities in Okinawa), have educated many young Japanese better than the heavily-edited history textbooks in ther schools. The recent actions of fanatical extremists in Hiroshima and anti-Japanese sentiments during football matches in China also have placed Japan on notice as to their obligations to resolve past offenses.

I agree with "a chinese"

The nonsense written by Hiromi is ridiculous.

There are for a fact several surviving non chinese people who even recorded videos of the horror japanese troops inflicted against the people in Nanjing, and there are several photos also which can easily be verified as original non edited photographs by any photo lab today.

And to say no foreigner actually witnessed the massacre is so naive, if you where going to execute 30.000 civilians and your the invading force, would you just allow some foreigner to sit by and watch? of course not even bringing such a point up is nothing less but stupid.

And for the authors Higashinakano Shudo and Tanaka Masaaki, they are both know pro right wing LPD so of course they will deny that the nanjing massacre ever took place.

And i wouldn't call it a brain washing program either, more true information program, since during the wartime the japanese government had total media control and most japanese had no knowledge what really happened overseas.

It's just stupid to not take responsibility for past actions and try to deny such an obvious truth. It would be like if my country (sweden) tried to deny its invasion of norway, russia, and the majority northern europe. Or trying to deny the crusades made by christian knights to spread the christian faith using armed forces against those who did not convert.

Face it, it did happen and i welcome any book that can help the truth thats why i give it 4/5.

Used for Russian Music class

This book was required for my Russian Music History class, and so to save money, I bought it off Amazon. However, the great thing about this being our textbook is that it reads like a novel. It's very descriptive, gives all the information you might need on any particular major Russian composer, along with a lot of interesting background insight that helps the understanding of the music and composers even more. The history of Russia at the time of the composers is also included within and so this really is a great all around Russian Music History book. I'd recommend it to anyone needing information the topic.

Non-technical; Perhaps useful to a dilettante

"A History of Russian Music," by Francis Maes, could have been better titled: "Music's Place in the History of Russia and the Soviet Union." Though there are some basic definitions given (scattered on pages throughout), there is not one musical example of any of the folk song types listed. For example, no one will, after reading this book alone, understand what a "protyazhyana" is, other than a "drawn-out song." One could say the same about any of Kenny G's music. Analysis of the music is limited. The author obviously assumes the reader has no knowledge of music theory. For example, in a particularly pedantic passage, he acknowledges that his explanation of the octatonic scale "sounds complicated." If you are interested in "play by play" examination of opera plots, etc., then this is the book for you. For an actual understanding of Russian musical style, there are better sources. This book appeared to be a dumbed-down version of Richard Taruskin's scholarship - one will note Taruskin is the most cited author in the book. All in all, not bad for the musical novice, and a great look at how music fit in with the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, but lacks clarity and detail in its definitions, and is without the technical analysis required for scholarly research. More frustrating than helpful. Great cover art though.

Not for the casual reader

This is a translation and it is difficult and challenging, as well as very technical writing about music. It isn't for the casual music enthusiast. I had to read it for a class in graduate music study and it was difficult to digest. The topic itself is tough, and compounded with a Dutch to English translation, it's not an easy read.

So too did innumerable individuals, institutions, and organizations. Prominent politicians, obscure farmers, eager amateurs, sober scientists: these and all the other kinds and conditions of American men and women figure in the story. The history of wine in America is, in many ways, the history of American origins and of American enterprise in microcosm.

While much of that history has been lost to sight, especially after Prohibition, the recovery of the record has been the goal of many investigators over the years, and the results are here brought together for the first time.

About the Author
Thomas Pinney is William M. Keck Distinguished Service Professor and Chairman of the Department of English at Pomona College. He has published scholarly work on George Eliot, Lord Macaulay, and Rudyard Kipling. A History of Wine in America is the outcome of his long-standing interest in American wines dating back to his graduate school days.
