Nurturing the Nation: The Family Politics of Modernizing, Colonizing, and Liberating Egypt, 1805-1923, by Lisa Pollard

Focusing on gender and the family, this erudite and innovative history reconsiders the origins of Egyptian nationalism and the revolution of 1919 by linking social changes in class and household structure to the politics of engagement with British colonial rule. Lisa Pollard deftly argues that the Egyptian state's modernizing projects in the nineteenth century reinforced ideals of monogamy and bourgeois domesticity among Egypt's elite classes and connected those ideals with political and economic success. At the same time, the British used domestic and personal practices such as polygamy, the harem, and the veiling of women to claim that the ruling classes had become corrupt and therefore to legitimize an open-ended tenure for themselves in Egypt. To rid themselves of British rule, bourgeois Egyptian nationalists constructed a familial-political culture that trained new generations of nationalists and used them to demonstrate to the British that it was time for the occupation to end. That culture was put to use in the 1919 Egyptian revolution, in which the reformed, bourgeois family was exhibited as the standard for "modern" Egypt.

Unusual perspective of early modern Egyptian society
By David Wilmsen
This book examines the period in Egyptian history from the reign of Muhammad Ali to the period immediately following the revolution of 1919 from the perspective of Egyptian domestic life. This may seem an unusual approach for a history to take, but it is quickly revealed that much of the discourse about modernism in Egypt focussed on the Egyptian household and how it should be reformed. When the British occupied Egypt in 1882, one of the rationales they used for extending their occupation was that so long as Egyptians maintained such unenlightened domestic relations as they did, including polygyny, veiling, and secluding women, they were clearly not prepared for self-rule. For their part, Egyptian modernizers adopted the same discourse, partly as a means of demonstrating to their colonizers that they were indeed ready. As it happens, the structure of the Egyptian family had been undergoing a transformation since Muhammad Ali had overthrown the Mamluks. Fearing that family alliances could threaten his rule, Muhammad Ali had abolished the Mamluk style of architecture, wherein houses could accommodate 150 to 200 people, and encouraged single-family homes. The discourse about household reform was not, then, completely imposed from outside, but Egyptian nationalists cleverly subverted the colonizers' rhetoric to advance their own programme of modernization.

The author has undertaken a thoroughgoing examination of Arabic and English archival resources along with all of the important recent works in the western scholarship of national identity and community building (she acknowledges her great debt to Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities) in her research. As the title and the subject matter may suggest, hers is a piece of scholarship set in the post-modern turn. In a work of this type, it is unavoidable that the tropes of narrative constructs, feminist politics, cultural memory, and identity discourse be revived yet again. She has done a sterling job of it, producing a rigorously researched, vigorously argued analysis of the emergence of modern Egypt, and an altogether fine piece of writing into the bargain. Not all scholarship of that ilk can boast such an accomplishment. She has demonstrated that the analytical tools of the post-modernist or post-structuralist or whatever post-you-wish school in the hands of a skilful artisan can turn out a fine piece of craftsmanship.

The work should appeal to a wide range of scholars. But the writing is accessible to the general reader as well, and the book could find favour amongst those who are interested in modern Egypt, or the discourse surrounding the "place of women" in the Arab/Islamic world, which, alas, has not progressed much beyond the paternalistic rhetoric of the English colonialists.

Icons of Grief: Val Lewton's Home Front Pictures, by Alexander Nemerov

This beautifully written study looks at the haunting, melancholy horror films Val Lewton made between 1942 and 1946 and finds them to be powerful commentaries on the American home front during World War II. Alexander Nemerov focuses on the iconic, isolated figures who appear in four of Lewton's small-budget classics—The Curse of the Cat People, The Ghost Ship, I Walked with a Zombie, and Bedlam. These ghosts, outcasts, and other apparitions of sorrow crystallize the anxiety and grief experienced by Americans during the war, emotions decidedly at odds with the official insistence on courage, patriotism, and optimism. In an evocative meditation on Lewton's use of these "icons of grief," Nemerov demonstrates the film-maker's interest in those who found themselves alienated by wartime society and illuminates the dark side of the American psyche in the 1940s.

Nemerov's rich study draws from Lewton's letters, novels, and scripts and from a wealth of historical material to shed light on both the visual and literary aspects of the filmmaker's work. Lavishly illustrated with more than fifty photographs, including many rare film stills, Icons of Grief recasts Lewton's horror films as suggestive commentaries on a troubled and hidden side of America during World War II.

A Different Approach
By Michael Samerdyke
This is perhaps the most original book written about Val Lewton's famous horror movies in decades. Nemerov looks at four images from Lewton's movies, images that center on little-known character actors Nemerov then shows how these tie into Lewton's Russian background, Lewton's career as a novelist, and American pop culture during World War II.

Rarely have I seen Lewton's films subjected to this kind of close analysis. While I might have wished that Nemerov focused on something from "The Seventh Victim" or "The Body Snatcher," I have to say that what he said made very good sense and placed Lewton in a broader context. (As opposed to the common idea that Lewton was such a genius that his films stand apart from everything else in the horror genre.) This is the rare book of which it can be said that I wish it were longer. Nemerov's enthusiasm for Lewton shines through, but he also has balanced judgment on Lewton's limitations as well. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in horror films or films of the Forties.

Wartime Horrors
By Scott T. Rivers
"Icons of Grief" is a fascinating critical study of producer Val Lewton's RKO horror films within a World War II context. Historian Alexander Nemerov examines the subtle power of Lewton's low-budget chillers (notably "Cat People," "I Walked With a Zombie" and "The Ghost Ship") and the cultural reflection upon wartime America. By providing new insights on Lewton and his work, Nemerov encourages the reader to seek out these remarkable films.

From the Soil: The Foundations of Chinese Society, by Xiaotong Fei

This classic text by Fei Xiaotong, China's finest social scientist, was first published in 1947 and is Fei's chief theoretical statement about the distinctive characteristics of Chinese society. Written in Chinese from a Chinese point of view for a Chinese audience, From the Soil describes the contrasting organizational principles of Chinese and Western societies, thereby conveying the essential features of both. Fei shows how these unique features reflect and are reflected in the moral and ethical characters of people in these societies. This profound, challenging book is both succinct and accessible. In its first complete English-language edition, it is likely to have a wide impact on Western social theorists.

Gary G. Hamilton and Wang Zheng's translation captures Fei's jargonless, straightforward style of writing. Their introduction describes Fei's education and career as a sociologist, the fate of his writings on and off the Mainland, and the sociological significance of his analysis. The translators' epilogue highlights the social reforms for China that Fei drew from his analysis and advocated in a companion text written in the same period.

A Sociology of Rural China
By John Richard Schrock
"From the Soil: The Foundations of Chinese Society" by Fei Xiaotong; translated by Gary G. Hamilton and Wang Zheng; UC Press, 1992.

In Kansas there are roadside signs bragging that "One Kansas farmer feeds 128 people and you." The efficiency of the American farmer allows over 99 percent of us to pursue other occupations. In China, this sign would read "One Chinese peasant feeds you." About one-half of the Chinese population are rural farmers. More were when this initial sociology was written, originally in essays. Fewer will be farmers over the next decades. But to understand rural China, these essays by China's first sociologist go a long way toward describing the rural roots of over a billion people.

Americans tend to generalize about China with observations that the Chinese believe in responsibility rather than rights, of shame instead of guilt, the long haul rather than short term, or work for the common good rather than for individualistic gain. Yet anyone who has watched B-grade kung fu movies will notice that the allegiance is to a father or grandfather and not to the city or province or state. Western generalizations of Chinese attitudes and beliefs are generally wrong. Fei does a solid job of describing the "differential mode of association" in China, the lack of need for any government at the local rural level, the role of rituals and relationships, and the slow pace of change.

The essays are uneven, and the first two are laden with discussions of the limitations of semantics that make you question if this is a sociology book. Yet the translators stay true to the intent of the author and lay out a sociology of China that is useful for the serious layperson seeking to understand the core of Chinese values that are rooted in rural society, or the junior scholar beginning serious in-depth study and who will hopefully work towards reading advanced material in Chinese.

There is a steady drumbeat of animosity in America toward China that is based on American ignorance towards the culture and language, as well as very poorly educated news reporters who neither speak the language nor understand the history and culture of China. Thus we have heard for the last two decades the imminent threat of the poor rural people rising up against the Party due to the growing income gap between the developed and undeveloped zones. This nonsense is due to a total lack of understanding of the Chinese respect for education; the poor understand they are poor because they lack an education. Local cases of civil unrest today stem from corrupt local officials and local business persons committing local acts of dishonesty. Reading this sociology will go far to help Western reporters and others understand the rural mindset and how local disorder---due to local mismanagement---does not become a threat to the national political structure.

John Richard Schrock

The Imperative of Modernity: An Intellectual Biography of José Ortega y Gasset, by Rockwell Gray

In this biography, Rockwell Gray offers a compelling portrait of one of the greatest Spanish writers and philosophers of the twentieth century. José Ortega y Gasset was a driving force at the center of an extraordinary flowering of literary and artistic talent in Madrid during the 1920s and 1930s. Author of The Revolt of the Masses, The Dehumanization of Art, Man and Crisis, The Origin of Philosophy, and numerous other well-known books, Ortega articulated more clearly than any other Spanish writer what Gray has called "the imperative of modernity," the need to open the doors of his native culture to currents of thought, art, and scholarship from abroad.

That Ortega should still stand as the preeminent intellectual leader of modern Spain even after his exile from the country following the Spanish Civil War testifies to the importance and continuing influence of his writings. Incisive, witty, and often lyrical in tone, they constitute a unique contribution to modern philosophy and a complex reflection on a crucial half century in Spanish and European history. This comprehensive intellectual biography, the first in English, brings us a new understanding of one of the most celebrated figures in Spanish cultural life, a thinker whose work is inseparable from the main currents of modern European intellectual and cultural history.

From Library Journal
This study subsumes into a biographical framework the Germanophile writings, republican politics, and intellectual influence of Spain's major contributor to 20th-century philosophy, surpassing both in scope and perspective Franz Niedermayer's diminutive Jose Ortega y Gasset (1973) and even Jose Ferrater Mora's groundbreaking Ortega y Gasset: An Outline of His Philosophy (1956). Yet it falls somewhere between intimidating novices with polysyllabic explications and beguiling scholars with comprehensiveness while disappointing them with the lack of attention paid to individual works. Despite lapses into flowery rhetoric, especially in the opening segments, and a failure to deal with all of Ortega's prolific output, Gray nonetheless reaffirms Ortega's role in world letters.

From the Inside Flap
"Gray's full portrait of the witty and wise metaphysician and cultural critic who wore vast learning so lightly and conveyed deep thoughts so nimbly . . . is certainly the best general work on Ortega to date and ranks with the two or three dozen leading monographs in English on twentieth-century thinkers." --Rudolph Binion, Brandeis University

About the Author
Rockwell Gray received his doctorate from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He is currently chairman of the Department of English at The Kiski School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, and has published a translation of Yolando Pino Saavedra's Folktales of Chile and many reviews and articles on modern culture and literature.

Near Eastern Seals (Interpreting the Past), by Dominique Collon

A rich source of pictorial information about the Ancient Near East comes to us in the form of miniature reliefs, created from the impressions made in clay by tiny engraved stone seals. Originally used for sealing goods and writing tablets, these seals now provide important evidence for administrative practices, technical development, and long-distance trade. The designs themselves record religious beliefs, mythical characters, architectural styles, musical instruments, festivals, sport, warfare, transportation, and fashions in dress.

In this first comprehensive introduction to pre-Islamic Near Eastern seals, Dominique Collon discusses cylinder seals—a form unique to the Ancient Near East—as well as stamp seals, the earliest dating from the fifth millennium B.C. As a reflection of how their owners saw the world around them, Near Eastern seals are an essential tool for archaeologists in interpreting the past.

Excellent introduction to Near Eastern Cylinder seals
By Joe Gonzalez (jgonzalez@etec.com)
Collon's book provides an excellent overview of Near Eastern Seals. A useful chronology for both stamp and cylinder seals is provided, as well as information on materials, designs, and stone-cutting techniques. The majority of the photographs and text focus on cylinder seals, but a few stamp seals are also included.

AN EXCELLENT AND EASILY ACCESSABLE BOOK
By manuscriptman
This is an excellent basic guide to the fascinating subject of Middle Eastern Cylinder seals. Well illustrated, it is written by one of the leading authorities in the world on material of this nature. It is amazing how much information the author managed to place in this deceptively small looking book. An excellent, if not the best, :"Starter Book" for those wishing to learn more about the topic.

Hey, Waitress!: The USA from the Other Side of the Tray, by Alison Owings

Most of us have sat across the tray from a waitress, but how many of us know what really is going on from her side? Hey, Waitress! aims to tell us. Containing lively, personal portraits of waitresses from many different walks of life, this book is the first of its kind to show the intimate, illuminating, and often shocking behind-the-scenes stories of waitresses' daily shifts and daily lives.

Alison Owings traveled the country—from border to border and coast to coast—to hear firsthand what waitresses think about their lives, their work, and their world. Part journalism and part oral history, Hey, Waitress! introduces an eclectic cast of characters: a ninety-five-year-old Baltimore woman who may have been the oldest living waitress, a Staten Island firebrand laboring at a Pizza Hut, a well-to-do runaway housewife, a Native American proud of her financial independence, a college student loving her diner more than her studies, a Cajun grandmother of twenty-two, and many others.

The book also offers vivid slices of American history. The stories describe the famous sit-in at the Woolworth's counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, which helped spark the civil rights movement; early struggles for waitress unions; and battles against sexually discriminatory hiring in restaurants.

A superb and accessible means of breaking down stereotypes, this book reveals American waitresses in all their complexity and individuality, and will surely change the way we order, tip, and, most of all, behave in restaurants.

From Publishers Weekly
As Owings (Frauen: German Women Recall the Third Reich) knew when she decided to explore the large, understudied world of the American waitress, many women have worked as waitresses at some point in their lives because it requires little training. Marrying social history and oral history, the author deftly explores her themes, primarily classism and the social stigma conveyed by waitressing (tips, she argues, give customers too much power and some restaurants the legal right today to pay as little as two dollars an hour), the confidence-building that comes with handling a demanding and often rude public, the sexism of bosses and kitchen staff, and the pride the women take in presenting an attractive meal and making their customers feel good. Owings allows a wide range of women to speak for themselves, among them a supremely confident mother-and-daughter duo; a former Connecticut housewife whose job gives her independence from an abusive marriage; a Ph.D. who feels more at ease as a waitress than as a graduate student; and a former Seattle union leader who has made great strides in improving the working conditions of waitresses. Owings presents her findings with compassion and wit and a sense of feminist indignation that doesn't detract from her journalistic balance. These qualities make for a lively read in this trailblazing contribution to the study of women and work.

From Library Journal
This is the second oral history by Owings, whose first book, Frauen, collected the reminiscences of average German women about Hitler's Germany. The subject here is not so fraught, but the observations of 35 waitresses, as selected and edited by Owings, are absorbing to read. Part of the interest is in her choice of locales: an Ursuline convent, the Woolworth's counter where civil rights sit-ins took place, one of the Harvey restaurants that "civilized the West," the first New York haute cuisine restaurant to hire a woman, and Everglades National Park, among others. Judicious editing also makes the book compelling: each waitress is full of insights about her life and her life's work and does not seem mired in the job. This is neither a labor study like Greta Foff Paules's Dishing It Out nor a first-person expos‚ of what Barbara Ehrenreich calls one of America's "least attractive jobs" (Nickel and Dimed). At its heart is young Owings's compassionate realization, while on a summer job at Howard Johnson's, that "some girls do not go to college"; she is not referring only to the scarcity of the literature when she observes that "waitresses stand alone even when they sit down." Recommended for labor history, women's studies, sociology, career counseling, and general interest collections. Janice Dunham, John Jay Coll. Lib., CUNY

From Booklist
Owings spent the summer before college working as a waitress, a brief and, she concedes, not very attentive stint working at one of the most common jobs for women. But over the years, she realized that waitresses, as servers and listeners, are the nation's unacknowledged witnesses. In this fascinating book, Owings briefly recounts the history of the profession as recorded in sociological studies and, more extensively, as cultural icons in books and movies. But the bulk of her book recounts interviews with present and former waitresses across the nation. One waitress recalls having to refuse service to black customers in 1960 in Greensboro, North Carolina; another remembers her career as a Harvey Girl along the Santa Fe railway. Waitresses in other chapters lament the low status attached to their jobs, the idiosyncrasies of bosses and customers, and their lives after their shifts. Owings' conversational style, humor, and empathy make this an absorbing look at the American landscape through the eyes of an often overlooked group of workers. Vanessa Bush

Say "Hi" to the lady with the tray
By John Pinna
I had to force myself to get past the author's introduction, I have a strong negative bias toward feminist manifestos, but once Ms. Owings was finished with her political ranting she introduced me to a pretty interesting group of waitresses. Some are positive, some negative, some hate their job, some love it, and each story is interesting and unique.
The concise biographical sketches average about five pages each and the women frankly describe their experiences and their lives. Single moms, married women, waitresses in diners, franchises, and fancy high class restaurants talk about cooks grabbing, customers grunting and owners screaming. A few might fit the "waitress" stereotype but they are all very different people from different backgrounds and the author does an excellent job describing them and their circumstances as well as their pressures on the job. Some waitressed short term, others are "lifers" with up to 50 years of experience. Most of the women are likeable and some are downright heroic. They all describe a job with similar pressures, and how they try to deal with them. Even the cloistered nun who served the other nuns at mealtime had to deal with stresses unique to serving food to others.
Since the vignettes are a few pages each the book is easy to pick up and put down, it is not necessary to set aside a block of reading time. I enjoyed it more than I expected, it may not be great literature but the frankness and intimacy of their stories has a compelling power. It's worth a few hours to meet these ladies.

Welcome to the world of waitressing
By Bunny Bunsen, PhD
I learned about this book from Smithsonian magazine's book reviews and was immediately intrigued. I, too, glossed over the brief history of waitressing in the beginning of the book to get right to the interviews. The part of the book I enjoyed most was the section on the women who have been involved (albeit peripherally at times) in major historical events by way of their profession. It was also very eye-opening as to the structure and dynamics of the restaurant system and the pay structure. I first became aware of the abuses in this system when a good friend of mine worked for a major sit-down dining chain in the United States while we were in college. His pay as a waiter was based only on tips (no hourly wage at all), and he was once "rewarded" for his excellent service by a large party of customers who paid for their dinner via a gift certificate, leaving the $0.11 balance as their tip. This book merely confirmed that such experiences are not necessarily that rare. It also provides some data on how waitresses perceive their customers which was also fascinating. I do leave a little extra now when dining out....

Hey,Waitress! The USA from the Other Side of the Tray
By A Customer
This thought provoking book was an eye opener for me. Similar to Nickel and Dimed - which I loved - it brings you into the lives of a hardworking segment of our workforce that is often overlooked and underappreciated. I had no idea of the physical, mental, and emotional challenges waitresses face (often with grace and humility) on a daily basis at diners and four-star restaurants alike. Reading the stories of these women - some sad, some funny, all interesting and compelling - forever changed the way I look at and treat waitresses. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in deepening their understanding of the lives of people we see everyday but might not otherwise have a chance to know.

Dignity and Vulnerability: Strength and Quality of Character, by George W. Harris

In this significant new addition to moral theory, George Harris challenges a view of the dignity and worth of persons that goes back through Kant and Christianity to the Stoics. He argues that we do not, in fact, believe this view, which traces any breakdowns of character to failures of strength. When it comes to what we actually value in ourselves and others, he says, we are far more Greek than Christian. At the most profound level, we value ourselves as natural organisms, as animals, rather than as godlike beings who transcend nature.

The Kantian-Christian-Stoic tradition holds that if we were fully able to realize our dignity as Kantians, Christians, or Stoics, we would be better, stronger people, and therefore less vulnerable to character breakdown. Dignity and Vulnerability offers an opposing view, that sometimes character breaks down not because of some shortcoming in it but because of what is good about it, because of the very virtues and features of character that give us our dignity. If dignity can make us fragile and vulnerable to breakdown, then breakdown can be benign as well as harmful, and thus the conceptions of human dignity embedded in the tradition leading up to Kant are deeply mistaken. Harris proposes a foundation for our belief in human dignity in what we can actually know about ourselves, rather than in metaphysical or theological fantasy. Having gained this knowledge, we can understand the source of real strength.

An insightful, convincing discussion of an important topic.
By A Customer
This book makes an invaluable contribution to discussions of vulnerability and its connections with human dignity. Harris argues against a line of thought running from the Stoics through Christianity and down to Kant that insists that whenever character weakens or crumbles, it does so because it lacks the strength ideal character must have. Harris contends that there are admirable character traits that can destroy us in tragic circumstances. In other words, self-destruction can be a manifestation of what is good in a person's character, instead of being a function of vice or weakness. Moreover, while the idea of dignity is usually associated with Kant, Harris argues that only a more Aristotelian view of life and character can do justice to the notion of dignity. Contrary to Kant and the Stoics, Harris argues that the road to a compelling conception of dignity runs through a proper appreciation of our vulnerability. Using the lead character from William Styron's Sophie's Choice, a mother forced by a Nazi officer to choose which of her children must die, Harris insists that only better luck or bad character could save Sophie from her subsequent agony and eventual suicide. Her breakdown owes to the fact that she is a loving mother forced to aim directly at the destruction of one child to save the other. Harris parts company with Kant and the Stoics here, neither of whom say that invulnerability is easy or inevitable, but both of whom deny any connection between vulnerability and good character. Like others, Harris raises serious doubts about the Kantian conception of motivation and justification, but he does so with unusual clarity and precision. Furthermore, Harris mounts a persuasive direct attack on the Kantian conception of dignity, and by so doing, breaks the Kantian monopoly on this concept. Where Stoicism is concerned (Harris also considers Epicurean strategies), Harris considers Martha Nussbaum's account in The Therapy of Desire. There she expresses sympathy with Stoic fears about emotional excess and disfigurement. Harris closely examines Nussbaum's arguments about the excesses of anger and romantic love and offers a very convincing critique. All in all, Dignity and Vulnerability is a remarkable little book. One only wishes that it were a bigger one, with more of the same insights and sharp analysis.
