In this significant new addition to moral theory, George Harris challenges a view of the dignity and worth of persons that goes back through Kant and Christianity to the Stoics. He argues that we do not, in fact, believe this view, which traces any breakdowns of character to failures of strength. When it comes to what we actually value in ourselves and others, he says, we are far more Greek than Christian. At the most profound level, we value ourselves as natural organisms, as animals, rather than as godlike beings who transcend nature.
The Kantian-Christian-Stoic tradition holds that if we were fully able to realize our dignity as Kantians, Christians, or Stoics, we would be better, stronger people, and therefore less vulnerable to character breakdown. Dignity and Vulnerability offers an opposing view, that sometimes character breaks down not because of some shortcoming in it but because of what is good about it, because of the very virtues and features of character that give us our dignity. If dignity can make us fragile and vulnerable to breakdown, then breakdown can be benign as well as harmful, and thus the conceptions of human dignity embedded in the tradition leading up to Kant are deeply mistaken. Harris proposes a foundation for our belief in human dignity in what we can actually know about ourselves, rather than in metaphysical or theological fantasy. Having gained this knowledge, we can understand the source of real strength.

This book makes an invaluable contribution to discussions of vulnerability and its connections with human dignity. Harris argues against a line of thought running from the Stoics through Christianity and down to Kant that insists that whenever character weakens or crumbles, it does so because it lacks the strength ideal character must have. Harris contends that there are admirable character traits that can destroy us in tragic circumstances. In other words, self-destruction can be a manifestation of what is good in a person's character, instead of being a function of vice or weakness. Moreover, while the idea of dignity is usually associated with Kant, Harris argues that only a more Aristotelian view of life and character can do justice to the notion of dignity. Contrary to Kant and the Stoics, Harris argues that the road to a compelling conception of dignity runs through a proper appreciation of our vulnerability. Using the lead character from William Styron's Sophie's Choice, a mother forced by a Nazi officer to choose which of her children must die, Harris insists that only better luck or bad character could save Sophie from her subsequent agony and eventual suicide. Her breakdown owes to the fact that she is a loving mother forced to aim directly at the destruction of one child to save the other. Harris parts company with Kant and the Stoics here, neither of whom say that invulnerability is easy or inevitable, but both of whom deny any connection between vulnerability and good character. Like others, Harris raises serious doubts about the Kantian conception of motivation and justification, but he does so with unusual clarity and precision. Furthermore, Harris mounts a persuasive direct attack on the Kantian conception of dignity, and by so doing, breaks the Kantian monopoly on this concept. Where Stoicism is concerned (Harris also considers Epicurean strategies), Harris considers Martha Nussbaum's account in The Therapy of Desire. There she expresses sympathy with Stoic fears about emotional excess and disfigurement. Harris closely examines Nussbaum's arguments about the excesses of anger and romantic love and offers a very convincing critique. All in all, Dignity and Vulnerability is a remarkable little book. One only wishes that it were a bigger one, with more of the same insights and sharp analysis.
