Liberally illustrated with more than 2,000 color photographs, supplemental maps, diagrams, and other images, The Encyclopedia of Weather and Climate Change takes the reader beyond simple definitions to explore where weather comes from and the roles played by oceans and water cycles, and explains such related phenomena as the shaping of landforms, the creation of biological provinces, and the lasting ramifications of climate change. It also discusses how humans have survived and adapted in extreme climates like deserts, jungles, and icy regions. Each of the book's six sections is written and vetted by a different expert. "Engine" discusses what weather is, the solar powerhouse that supplies it, and Earth's atmospheric systems and seasons. "Action" delves into the dynamics of various weather forms. "Extremes" covers blizzards, heat waves, wildfires, and more. "Watching" tracks how weather is measured, mapped, monitored, and forecast. "Climate" delineates the continental climate zones and describes the plant, animal, and human adaptations for each. "Change" considers the history of climate change—ice ages, dinosaur extinction, melting glaciers, human impact, and more—and what we can expect in the future.

From Booklist
This heavily illustrated volume is packed with more than 3,000 color photographs, maps, and diagrams, complemented by concise explanations regarding the world’s weather and climate. It is divided into six sections, each written by a different expert. “Engine” explains what weather is and how winds and ocean conditions affect our planet’s weather. “Action” looks at water, clouds, precipitation, and optical effects. “Extremes” discusses thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, droughts, and more. “Watching” examines the history of meteorology and how weather today is mapped and forecasted. More than half the book’s content can be found in the last two sections, “Climate” and “Change.” “Climate” outlines the various climate zones as well as regional climate information. The final section, “Change,” covers the history of climate change, natural patterns, human factors, how climate change is threatening life on earth, and suggestions for reversing these trends. Each section is broken into chapters. Following an introduction, each chapter has several entries, generally two pages in length, covering individual topics (for example, Tornado structure, Tornado climatology) and containing fact files, locator maps, charts, diagrams, photographs, and more. Special features called “Insights” look at certain topics (for example, Notable tornadoes) in more depth. Recommended for high-school and public libraries. --Robyn Rosenberg

Excellent reference and great for the coffee table too!

Honestly, I haven't found weather/atmospheric science books very interesting - but this is a great book! The authors do an excellent job covering a huge variety of topics related to climate and weather while providing stunning and detailed visual models so that non-scientists (like myself) can actually understand what they are talking about! I highly recommend this book and wish that Amazon would give more peeks of the inside pages. The price is also incredible. This is a hardbound high quality book that I would usually expect to pay at least $150 for - no kidding.

Beautiful to look at but frustrating to learn from.
By Amazon Customer
This is a beautifully presented book with hundreds of large colour photos and drawings depicting various weather events and systems. You can let it fall open at just about any random page and be instantly drawn in by the often striking images. It's a good coffee table book from that perspective.

However as more of a reference book to learn about weather concepts and processes it is quite frustrating to use. Each page is usually divided in two with a narrow "Fact File" column, while the majority of rest of the page taken up with a large photo or diagram with small areas of text. The fact files themselves are also mostly smaller images with a short paragraph of text next to each.

As a result the actual information content on many pages is of very low density. I find myself locating a page via the contents or index, reading what text there is, and still feeling I need more information for my questions to be adequately answered. Sometimes essential information is included in the main page text, sometimes (more often) you need to scan through the fact files to get this information, also now and again this information seems entirely missing. Scanning through other possibly related sections can sometimes help, but is hit and miss.

Weather is a considered a dull subject by many people and so I'm sure the authors/publisher saw it as very important to make the book as visually enticing as possible to attract and maintain readers. The images certainly help greatly with this goal. However at 500 pages, you would think you could find reasonably detailed information on the majority of weather topics and even some more obscure topics, however this is just not the case. Many topics are merely mentioned in a single sentence and with a one or two sentence definition in the glossary. Temperature inversion is one such topic that comes to mind.

In summary, this is a nice looking and reasonably informative book. I'm sure there are literally thousands of dry, academically oriented books on the weather available, but from what I've seen these are almost the polar opposite of this book (eg. all content, no pretty diagrams/pictures). What I'd really like is a book with more detail than this, slightly fewer and smaller pretty pictures, but that is still aimed at the general public.
