In his endeavor to write about McKay, the celebrated Pomo basket weaver and medicine woman, Sarris (English, UCLA) has been able to find his own identity. Part American Indian, Filipino, and Jewish, he was adopted at birth and is now chief of the Coast Miwok tribe. His bonding with this extraordinary individual and his growth during their relationship is described throughout the book. Sarris's catharsis is reflected on the last page: "I squatted in front of her and repeated my questions. 'Why did you do it for me?' She looked me in the eye and said, plain as day, 'Because you kept coming back."' McKay's life, simple yet spiritual, is as quintessential as the baskets she wove. A fascinating and inspiring book

Mabel McKay, Weaving the Dream is a profound, poetic, and magical journey. I have read it aloud a number of times to savor its depths. If you have any desire to know Native Californians as human beings rather than museum pieces, you may want to start here. The book, which is steeped in the oral tradition inspired me to write the following poem which was published some years back through U.C. Davis.

continues to resonate over time

This is just a wonderful piece of writing, one which keeps resonating with me, even several years after first reading it. This book should have more readers, and seeing so few reviews for it, I want to argue for it as a must read on anybody's list. We all know books or speakers, writers and lecturers who could take any subject and make it worthwhile, just to spend time in their company. Greg Sarris is one of those magical presences we can be lucky enough to get to know through the medium of the page. Saying this is not intended to undercut the amazing person of Mabel Mckay, by the way. The way the past present and future weave in and out of this book, her stories, Greg's life, the future of land use in California... all of this is here, an enticing mix of POV's, passed around like a sacred pipe.

Abuse of sources to support false premises. Knowing misrepresentation and distortion of primarily honest works.

The unvarnished truth about Ann Fabian's work is that it's a flagrantly, unconscionably false representation of the narratives she "studied" and, worse, that it's a work whose sources have been twisted by Fabian to advance her own preconceived notions -- ones that are almost totally unsupported by the personal narratives about which she supposedly reveals the "unvarnished truth."

Her premise is that "[t]he practice of selling one's tale of woe to make a buck has long been a part of American culture. The Unvarnished Truth: Personal Narratives in Nineteenth-Century America is a powerful cultural history of how ordinary Americans crafted and sold their stories of hardship and calamity during the nineteenth century."

This is patently, provably untrue. Fabian writes like a biographer who despises and scorns his subject, and, not content to present any facts or items in a bad light, manufactures worse things from his own imagination using chance references and speculations.

Fabian's title gives the reader not so much a warning regarding a revelation of "truths" that the narratives' authors would prefer to keep hidden if they could -- which is what the title implies -- as it is a foreshadowing that the book reveals truths about Fabian as an historian and author that she would prefer remain hidden herself. The serious reader doesn't have to dig very deeply to strip away Fabian's varnish of erudition to find a work that is an example of scholarly writing AT ITS WORST. But the truth will out, as they say.

The reader has only to study Fabian's sources for himself (to use the word in its grammatically correct neutral generic form). One source that she uses to make sweeping statements about ALL narratives that don't even apply to this one, is Captain David Perry's autobiography Recollections of an Old Soldier: The Life of Captain David Perry, A Soldier of the French and Revolutionary Wars, etc....Written by himself. This source is online at The Captain David Perry Web Site. Perry's Recollections was printed free of charge by a generous young printer (Simeon Ide) in Windsor, Vermont, 1822, strictly on the merits of its worth.

There was NO monetary motivation for the recording of his life by David Perry, as Fabian maintains, nor was Perry sought out by the printer, as Fabian declares. Perry's Recollections is a unique work, written for his posterity at the age of 79, and neither he nor the publisher received any remuneration, nor did they seek any. Beyond the printer's effort to cover the cost of printing Perry's 55-page book, any proceeds were reserved for the publication of the accounts of any other Revolutionary War veterans who should come forward. (None did.) And yet, Fabian lumps Capt. Perry into a group she calls "beggar storytellers" and uses his printed work to support conclusions she has reached BEFORE she ever did the research, or else she simply ignored the truth when she read it.

Clearly, she did not read in any depth the narratives about which her book's purpose is ostensibly to lay bare the truth. Like a scientist whose mind is made up regardless of the facts, she picks pieces here and there that can be blended into a work wholly devoid of the substance of the truth.

The only truth she succeeds in revealing is that her work is one of slander in the guise of scholarly writing. If you must read Fabian's work, take an open mind into your own study of the narratives she uses or cites. They are not hard to track down (although Fabian disguised the title of Capt. David Perry's book by placing "Recollections of an Old Soldier" in the middle of his title, and if she did this once, she may have done so for other sources). Many are held in university libraries' microfiche or microfilm collections, the Library of American Civilization [LAC] series, for example, and some narratives are online at Archive.org.

Don't believe a word Fabian says, but use her work as a starting point to do your own careful reading of the narratives she used and abused. She didn't even do the long-dead writers the courtesy to take their narratives at face value. I have studied history for 40 years, primarily in researching the life and times of Captain David Perry. In the process, I have studied a number of the sources she cited, so can speak with some authority.

I'd like to add to this review other specific examples of her falsehoods. That such a work as hers might be taken as actually revelatory of truths is egregiously shortsighted, but the main fault lies with Fabian herself. For an excellent example of using personal narratives in a honest, insightful, truly scholarly way, see Dr. Fred Anderson's A People's Army: Massachusetts Soldiers and Society in the Seven Years' War, originally published by the Institute of Early American History and Culture, The University of North Carolina Press, (1996). I found only one error -- the name of Perry's captain at one point (he'd joined a decimated ranger company at Quebec by that time and so was no longer serving under his original captain, whom he didn't rejoin until the end of the 1759 campaign) -- but Anderson's reading of Capt. David Perry's Recollections was refreshingly accurate considering the vast number of such records Anderson used, and his use of his sources bespeak an integrity in scholarly writing using personal narratives in a way that is totally lacking in Ann Fabian's (infamous) The Unvarnished Truth: Personal Narratives in Nineteenth-Century America.

Her work, conclusions, discussion of narratives and their authors, etc, should be taken with less worth than a grain of salt. More examples to come. My full review is over three pages long and needs paring. Honestly, I'd have to write a book about the untruths and downright lies contained in Fabian's work. She doesn't even cite her sources properly. I can only imagine that, having perpetrated a fraud, she'd prefer her readers NOT find and study her sources for themselves. This is irony in the extreme, since she goes to far as to accuse the narratives' authors of fraud themselves.

I only wish I'd written this review three years ago when I first bought the book. Seldom have I been so incensed at an author (and publisher) for foisting on the unsuspecting public, or the unsuspecting professors, college students, and students of history in general, a work so replete in the worst way with "scholarly" mendacity.

If you read this book, read it as an example how NOT to use sources; you'll find no honest portrayal of them here. Fabian has twisted them to suit her own purposes: the acclaim of her peers? Of critics? to spark controversy? Or more likely, as she accuses the narratives' authors of doing, to simply make a buck.

Misleading and false representation of America's history

The author of this book seems to want to put our nations early historical writers in a 21st century created box. Unfortunately, the assumption that people who were miserable, through poverty, or circumstances; sold their stories as published works, to gain a dollar, isn't at all always the case. This author included my ancestor, Captain David Perry, in this discussion, as part of the proof of her theory. What the author failed to do was RESEARCH. An embarrassing mistake INDEED! Captain David Perry's book Recollection of an Old Soldier, was published FREE of charge. The customary expectation at that time was that people PAID to have books published. As a historian myself, I have noted numerous instances, where entire farms were mortgaged to print books in our early history as a nation. (That hardly screams they were looking for a dollar. It just wasn't so.) Their motivation was in their cause for FREEDOM, and a lasting FREEDOM for their posterity to come. Captain David Perry's motivation to publish his life history is spelled out very directly in his last words to his posterity. As a man who fought hard for the foundation of this beautiful country; he gave us all this word of warning for FREE, dying as a pauper: "When we reflect back to our Revolutionary war, and see how much blood and treasure were spent to gain our independence, shall we, after so long an experience of the advantages arising from so good a government, be any more deceived by internal or foreign enemies? Shall we contrast the mildness of our government, and the civil and religious liberty that we enjoy under it, with the bigotry and tyranny which prevails under the monarchies of Europe, and say we are willing to exchange the former for the latter? I dare say not. Then let me conjure my posterity to stand by this government of our choice, and never be deceived by political or ecclesiastical demagogues. Let the people keep the right and power of election; always in their own hands, and at their annual freemen's meetings be sure to choose men into office, who are true friends of a Republican Government. Let them encourage all the arts and sciences that are necessary in a Republic, and none others, -- and in this way they may perpetuate their liberties. -- But if they are ambitious to ape the follies, extravagance, and luxury of European countries, their freedom can have but a short duration. But, above all, let us as a nation dedicate ourselves to God, and pray that he would have us in his holy keeping, and so direct the councils of our nation, as may tend to preserve its free institutions, to the latest period of time; which is the ardent prayer of David Perry, Chelsea, Vt., 1819." It is unfortunate and embarrassing to think that of all the works this author wanted to make example of, in suggesting motivation, it was this one, by Captain Perry. His clear motivation is a warning for our time. And this author has proven him CORRECT. Clearly the warning is needed.

Very impressed

This book is packed full of information. It's very small in size which is nice for a reference book. There was much more information on plants and dinosaurs than what I was expecting. Actually too much for the person I bought it for! But I'm very happy that we have it for future reference. A good book!

So inspiring!

I have been a painter since the 1960s. As a contemporary female artist, it is so important to learn about the struggles so many female artists have experienced, and this book showed me how artists were able to be noticed and admired, throughout history. The various essays have many different voices, and the introduction really set the tone for a very readable but informative book. I highly recommend it!

Well-written, interesting content. Introduction points out the differing strategies and ideas discussed in essays about how women artists have been portrayed and how they ought to be in the future. Why does art done by male artists traditionally get looked at objectively as art, whereas art done by female artists is rarely examined without being explained or contextualized by the female artist's personal life or male artists they are associated with? The book also examines in depth, from multiple angles, the burning question of whether or not the monograph is an applicable format for studying the female artist.

Voices of the First Americans

Kroeber heard these stories mostly from Natives who had begun their syncretism with the modern world. These stories are rightly told in a contemporary fashion. For instance, Eskimo kinship terms are utilized to establish kindred, (grandfather, uncle, etc.) instead of the more traditional, descriptive anthropological method of using terms such as "fathers-mothers-sister."
Theodora Kroeber can be congratulated for this great little book of traditional stories from California's Native Americans. Lessons can be learned, values can be taught, and more importantly, the people who originally inhabited these lands can have their voices heard. This book is appropriate for all age groups, but I would insist also that this book be read to youngsters, who could indubitably benefit from the lessons taught within.
Truly a great piece of ethnographic work and literature simultaneously.

I Love Indian Lore

I'm 67 years old, retired, and volunteer at a museum in the mountains. We have a large selection of Indian artifacts, so not knowing a whole lot about the Indians I wanted to brush-up on some of their lore / stories that might help me to be a better docent. This book is very well written and easy to understand. It will help me to do a better job.

A Poem for Ishi

Theodora Kroeber is best known for her account of Ishi, the Yahi or Yana Native American who emerged from a life of evasion of 'the White Man' in Northern California, at the beginning of the 20th Century, and had the fortune to fall into the 'care' of anthropologists rather than bounty hunters. Theodora never met Ishi. Her book was first published in 1961, while Ishi died in 1916. Theodora worked from the notes of her famous pioneering anthropologist husband, Alfred Kroeber, after his death. Details of her account have been challenged by later writers, but the story of Ishi has become an icon of America's callous disruption and decimation of indigenous cultures. Indeed, of all the nations of the Western Hemisphere, the USA has most thoroughly and hypocritically 'cleansed' itself of its "First Nations" , their languages and their significance in the modern population. Ishi spent his few last years at what is now the UCSF Medical Center, wher he is said to have roamed the wildly neglected UC property called The Sutro Forest. That land is still undeveloped and overgrown, though the vegetation isn't remotely what Ishi might have explored. There are semi-secret paths through the gullies of the forest, and one comes upon makeshift tributes to Ishi here and there.

It was the second marriage for both the elderly Alfred and the younger Theodora. Their daughter is the well-known fantasy novelist Ursula Le Guin, who in turn has a daughter, Elizabeth Le Guin, who is a very fine baroque cellist, performing with Philhormonia and Tafelmusik. Quite a family!

This is a collection of stories based on the oral traditional narratives of Northern Californian Native Americans. It is not written as ethnographic material; rather, the stories are told in forthright literary English. Nonetheless, they taste and smell authentic, and make excellent reading. Both of Theodora Kreober's book are popular assignments to high school students in California, as they should be. The title story tells of a young gray whale tossed by a tsunami into a fresh water lake; it's a reflection of the kind of calamity that can result from "imbalance" between humanity and nature. And it's a memorable story as literature.

I first read this collection many years ago. As if by fate, it suddenly popped up at the top of my to-read-again stack. The title story still impressed me, so I wrote a poem in response to its impact:

THE INLAND WHALE

A hard land to need
consolation from. An awkward visit,
rainy weather in a small tent. What tells it to exist?
Subsistence in the cave of care
conditions one, as the thoughts of a landlocked whale

teach one to dream of whales,
one who camps out at this inland sea and persists
despite overweariness. Without some need,
a self gets stagnant.... a landscape too familiar to visit,
a flood reflected in a puddle, a care

which accommodates itself. Those who care
are amphibious and may procreate in need,
though both care and need are fantasies of a whale
which fills its pond to overflowing, as the womb would be filled
if the child could more than visit.

A hard land to visit:
steep granitic shores, from which the whale's
fluke, or its spout, is visible at times...where if you care
to listen, you can hear the whale sing of need-
lessness, sameness of self and sea, the will

awash in the sea it displaces. Life
crawls up these shores too surfeited to care.
A departure without a visit:
all creatures dry or finny being dreams of the whale...
a land where care displaces need.

Medical anthropologist Jeanne Guillemin's Anthrax: The Investigation of a Deadly Outbreak examines the 1979 deaths of 64 Soviet citizens in the Ural mountains. In a dense and unsettling work, Boston College sociologist Guillemin depicts her 1992 journey to Russia to research a mysterious 1979 anthrax epidemic: little was known about the outbreak, in which 64 died in the remote province of Yekaterinburg, between Kazakhstan and Siberia. In pat and conflicting comments, Russian authorities said the outbreak had followed anthrax's usual pattern, deriving from either soil, ceramics dust or contaminated meat. But a general suspicion developed in the scientific and intelligence communities that the anthrax had resulted from a more unusual aerosol emission from the nearby Compound 19, a weapons facility. Was the outbreak a result of biological weapons technology? Guillemin's team members gather the evidence, though they are unable to establish a definitive answer. Her sociological background leads her to focus on the human variables in this scientific mystery; by tracking down survivors of the outbreak, she hoped to shed light on the enigmas of the disease's dispersal rate and pattern. Unfortunately, her recounting of many minute sparring sessions with the team's wily Russian counterparts, as well as a morass of sociological commentary on a fragmenting postcommunist Russian society, are prolix. In April 1979 the Soviet city of Sverdlovsk was suddenly struck by an epidemic of anthrax. At least 64 people died; the number may have been much higher. The official explanation was that contaminated meat had been sold in the city. Guillemin, professor of sociology at Boston College, was a member of a Russian-American team that Russia allowed years later (in 1992) to "piece together what information time and political censorship had not destroyed." What the team discovered was that a plume of aerosolized anthrax spores had escaped from Compound 19, a military base that had "a biological facility," a few days before anthrax spread among animals and people downwind.

What Compound 19 was doing with anthrax remains unclear. The work may have been part of a biological warfare program. Because bioterrorism with anthrax is a concern today, Guillemin considers what might be done about it. She thinks the approach of the U.S. government--focusing on vaccination, civil-defense drills and a buildup of public health facilities--is wrong-headed. "Is the growth of a new 'threat industry' the best we can do? Are landscapes of fear the American environments of the future? Or is there a middle ground, where reasonable tactics for legal restraints can be combined with reasonable tactics to identify real threats to national security?"

fascinating read

i read this and graysmith's book on the topic of the anthrax attacks. i found this book to be the better. reading it is like listening to someone describe a spider's web, with it's varying lines, thicknesses, angles, dimensions ... its not easy to fully explore a topic with different sites, characters, and the timelines. the author does more than an adequate job of accomplishing these tasks. with our finest investigative agencies never having publicly resolved this complex case, i felt disappointed when the end of the book came and we hadn't reached a conclusion, either... this is a quick read. given the difference between the current price new ($40.00) and used ($0.01), for the price - used - you can't go wrong.

Guillemin's fascinating story of the research conducted in Russia to find the truth behind the 1979 anthrax outbreak in Sverdlovsk, now Yaketerinburg says much about life under the old Soviet regime. Official silence on key information compunded with official statements never really believed by those hearing it lead to all sorts of wild rumors, many repeated by the US government which probably had little firm evidence to go on. (Given that many major disasters under the Soviet regime such as plane crashes, subway cave-ins and train wrecks were never publicly announced, US analysts might well have thought they were being reasonable in their reports of "thousands" dead in a release of anthrax spores.) The research steps taken by the Harvard University team, including the interviews conducted by Guillemin and her Russian assistants are laid out. The author recounts her reactions and those she interviews, showing the impact the outbreak had on the residents downwind of the mysterious Compound 19. She points how certain features of the Soviet regime assisted her : the lack of mobility for residents kept most survivors and relatives of the victims in the same neighborhoods, which made locating them for interviews much easier, and the centralized nature of the Soviet government enabled public health officials to quickly mobilize a response, saving some lives. "Anthrax" contains a rich bibliography for those with further interest in the history and use of biological weapons. The author restrains her obvious outrage at the existence and use of these weapons, hoping that publicizing their existence and potential threat will encourage the rest of us to take steps to contain and eventually eliminate them. To her credit, she does point out how public scares can exaggerate the usefulness of bio-weapons, and become excuses for continued restriction on the freedoms of the public. Recommended for those in public health and epidemiology, those concerned with the threat of biological weapons, and historians of the Former Soviet Union.

I looked to this book for more details about the Sverdlovsk outbreak after reading Biohazard, the excellent expose by Ken Alibek published a year after this book. Comparisons of the two books are inherently unfair and at the same time unavoidable because Alibek, who spent two decades directing major parts of the Soviet Union's covert biological warfare programs, knows so much more than everyone involved with this investigation could have ever hoped to uncover. Bottom line: I strongly recommend "Biohazard" over this book. Alibek's chapter on Sverdlovsk has riveting first-hand accounts of the accident at the anthrax production facility. And he names names!

This book presents circumstantial evidence from people who were outside the biological warfare program: attending doctors, victims' families, etc. Like "Biohazard," it also refutes the official "contaminated meat" story.

I did get a bit of the additional detail I was looking for, and for that I give it two stars, but it meanders quite a bit with childish, off-topic editorial musings that belong in a travelogue rather than in a presentation of findings, and I found it dull. I have more criticisms of this book but see no use in presenting them: there are nearly 400 used copies for sale here as I type this. It's dead.

This excellent reference work details the manner in which the U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted the Constitution for almost 200 years. A professor of law at New York Law School, Lieberman has written other books on the Constitution. His present work is well organized, digesting about 2,370 Supreme Court cases into roughly 1200 concise, pertinent, and easily understood essays on constitutional issues. Arranged alphabetically by topic, each essay highlights both the constitutional background and the history of the issue, as well the latest legal developments. The book effectively illustrates the manner in which changing economic and social conditions can frequently alter the way the Supreme Court interprets an issue. For example, evolving attitudes of the Court are evidenced by the change from the separate-but-equal doctrine of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) to the separate-is-inherently-unequal doctrine of Brown v. Board of Education (1954). Also, changing political winds can sometimes result in the reversal of decisions once perceived to be definitive--witness the ongoing weakening of the seminal 1973 abortion decision, Roe v. Wade . An Excellent Reference for Lawyers and Non-Lawyers

The bulk of A Practical Companion to the Constitution is in dictionary form and provides throrough but concise accessible explanations of the key concepts and terms of art of constitutional analysis. Each entry is also cross-referenced with other related concepts and definitions to aid the reader in fully understanding the concepts discussed. Professor Lieberman also places each entry into a historical context so that the reader may trace the development of doctrines and concepts and understand not only where a doctrine originated but where the state of the law or doctrine stands today. For example, under the entry for "Incorporation Doctrine," Professor Lieberman provides us with a brief explanation of the concept, and then traces the concept through its history and application. At the end of the entry, we find a list of which amendments have been incorporated onto the states, the rights implicated in the incorporation, and the year the amendment was incorporated. Indeed, I was most impressed with how Professor Lieberman has throughout the book explained the abstract concepts of Fourteenth Amendment analysis into easily understandable terms without oversimplifying or doing violence to the concepts. Other sections of the book provide summaries of the cannons of constitutional interpretation so that the reader has a basic understanding of the tools of textual interpretation. Finally, Professor Lieberman provides a thorough table of cases and brief biographical sketches of the justices who have served on the Supreme Court. I give this reference book my highest recommendation. It is a must for law students. It is an excellent resource for lawyers looking for the vocabulary to explain in accessible terms the abstractions of constitutional analysis. It is invaluable for the non-lawyer seeking to understand better the constitution.

The Evolving Constitution by Lieberman

The work describes constitutional issues considered by the

United States Supreme Court over the past 200 years. Judicial

power has been exercised in the following types of situations:

- disputes between citizens of different states

- appellate jurisdiction of law and fact

- the 14th amendment requiring that no state should enforce

laws abridging the rights of citizens nor deny equal

protection under the laws

- the Supreme Court may balance or weigh state powers as against

individual rights

- strict scrutiny utilizes a rational basis or relationship test

- important criteria include whether or not an important

government objective is served or the issue at bar is

substantially encompassed by the governmental objective

- there is a right to sue when injured by a private person

in the common law

- there is an implied constitutional right of action

- federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of age,

medical condition and physical handicap according to the

American Disabilities Act of 1990.

An invaluable book by a great teacher

Professor Lieberman teaches Constitutional Law at New York Law School. I was privileged to study under him in 1998. He is an immensely knowledgeable man with an unmatched talent for clarity of communication. I am pleased to be able to recommend this book to all readers. For further insight regarding our highest court, I also recommend New York Law School's Dean Harry H. Wellington's very fine book, Interpreting the Constitution: The Supreme Court and the Process of Adjudication.
