Women and Evil, by Nel Noddings

Human beings love to fictionalize evil--to terrorize each other with stories of defilement, horror, excruciating pain, and divine retribution. Beneath the surface of bewitchment and half-sick amusement, however, lies the realization that evil is real and that people must find a way to face and overcome it. What we require, Carl Jung suggested, is a morality of evil--a carefully thought out plan by which to manage the evil in ourselves, in others, and in whatever deities we posit. This book is not written from a Jungian perspective, but it is nonetheless an attempt to describe a morality of evil. One suspects that descriptions of evil and the so-called problem of evil have been thoroughly suffused with male interests and conditioned by masculine experience. This result could hardly have been avoided in a sexist culture, and recognizing the truth of such a claim does not commit us to condemn every male philosopher and theologian who has written on the problem. It suggests, rather, that we may get a clearer view of evil if we take a different standpoint. The standpoint I take here will be that of women; that is, I will attempt to describe evil from the perspective of women's experience.

From Library Journal
Noddings (education, Stanford Univ.) presents innovative and insightful criticism of traditional understandings of the concept of evil; she then goes on to construct a humanitarian (rather than polemically feminist) alternative to both the concept as tradition has given us to understand it--effeminate, materialist, responsive to violence--and strategies for re-educating our culture morally--to mediate, to practice moderation, to share with rather than oppose the Other. Her grasp of theological and philosopical history is sound, her writing concise and cogent, and her topic always timely. Her book is not perfect; scholars will feel invited to respond to it. Yet most libraries will need and want it, as it addresses readers interested in women's studies, cultural anthropology, religion, and philosophy. Accessible to general readers as well. --Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley P.L., Cal.

Review
"The power of Noddings' book . . . lies in its challenge to traditional ethical systems. . . . There is something sensible, immediate, and profoundly thought-provoking about her claims. . . . This is a challenging book and deserves attention."--Karen Lebacqz, "Theological Studies

From the Inside Flap
"In Women and Evil, Nel Noddings, philosopher and professor of education at Stanford University, presents carefully, clearly and often with eloquence a feminist reconstruction of evil. . . . Noddings hopes that men as well as women are beginning to understand that the warrior model threatens us all and so may be moved to entertain an alternate vision. I hope so too. I hope they will read this book."--Blythe McVicker Clinchy, American Journal of Education "In this engaging book, Nel Noddings examines several theological, philosophical, and psychological associations of women with evil in order to propose a counter-definition of evil from the perspective of women's experience. . . . [Women and Evil] is a valuable contribution to the analysis of evil and its alleviation."--Margaret R. Miles, Commonweal "Although I often find myself arguing with Noddings, I have no doubt her spirited and insightful book will be a boon to those of us who share her dedication to developing an ethics of care, not least because Noddings' ambitious vision reveals fundamental questions that this ethics must still confront."--Sara Ruddick, New Directions for Women

From Publishers Weekly
Revisiting the highlands of Papua New Guinea where he had done anthropological fieldwork some 30 years agothe basis of his earlier The High ValleyRead found that Westernization has brought mixed blessings to the Gahuku, the adventurous, warm Melanesian people with whom he lived. Antagonism and distance between the sexes have eased up. More relaxed sexual mores now prevail, and young women may meet men at the "disco" tavern or in the marketplace. The "six to six," a dance that lasts from 6 p.m. until the following morning, is a popular event. The manly nama cult, with its flute music and climactic rituals glorifying masculinity, has vanished. Women now receive education along with men, travel freely and openly oppose male social controls. Yet Read worries about what he considers misguided attempts to graft fundamentalist Christianity onto this culture, and he envisages a marginal, impoverished position for the Gahuku in the world economy. Part memoir, part field report, this is an affectionate portrait of a people in the turmoil of social change.

From Library Journal
Read's The High Valley (1965) is an anthropological classic. In it he tells not only of a New Guinea Highlands people, but of his complex personal relations with them. In this sequel, he reports on his 1981-82 return to what is now the nation of Papua New Guinea, 31 years after his first stay. He manages to convey the same eloquent sense of place and people that made his first book so poignant. He tells of the changes three decades have wrought in New Guinea and in the lives of his friends. Once again he shows us, in a way few authors have been able to duplicate, the intenseand extraordinaryquality of the anthropologist's life "in the field." This will be equally valuable to professional and student. Glenn Petersen, Sociology & Anthropology Dept., Baruch Coll., CUNY

Bottled Poetry: Napa Winemaking from Prohibition to the Modern Era, by James T. Lapsley

California's Napa Valley is one of the world's premier wine regions today, but this has not always been true. James Lapsley's entertaining history explains how a collective vision of excellence among winemakers and a keen sense of promotion transformed the region and its wines following the repeal of Prohibition. Focusing primarily on the formative years of Napa's fine winemaking, 1934 to 1967, Lapsley then concludes with a chapter on the wine boom of the 1970s, placing it in a social context and explaining the role of Napa vineyards in the beverage's growing popularity.

Names familiar to wine drinkers occur throughout these pages—Beaulieu, Beringer, Charles Krug, Christian Brothers, Louis Martini, Inglenook—and the colorful stories behind the names give this book a personal dimension. These strong-willed, competitive winemakers found ways to work cooperatively, both in sharing knowledge and technology and in promoting their region. The result was an unprecedented improvement in wine quality that brought with it a new reputation for the Napa Valley.

In The Silverado Squatters, Robert Louis Stevenson refers to wine as "bottled poetry," and although Stevenson's reference was to the elite vineyards of France, his words are appropriate for Napa wines today. Their success, as Lapsley makes clear, is due to much more than the beneficence of sun and soil. Craft, vision, and determination have played a part too, and for that, wine drinkers the world over are grateful.

From Booklist
For wine connoisseurs, a winery's Napa Valley location on a label generally indicates a certain quality. Historian Lapsley renders a detailed overview of winemaking in the Napa region, focusing primarily on activities from the repeal of Prohibition in 1934 through the 1970s. Lapsley recalls the dominance of so-called sweet or dessert wines before the emergence of the fine wines that are now overwhelmingly associated with northern California and goes on to track the eventual development of premium dry varietal wines and the determined wine makers who first produced and marketed excellent wines with great character--in the tradition that currently exists. Alice Joyce

From Kirkus Reviews
Forget the flowery title, a bit of whimsy from Robert Louis Stevenson. What Lapsley (Univ. of California, Davis) has produced here is a business school history of Napa wine in which poetry plays little role. American winemaking has come a long way from its immigrant roots, and no aspect of the industry rivals the economic success of the Napa Valley producers, those folks who can be said to define the notion of American premium table wine. Why?, Lapsley asks. He suggests the answer lies in ``promoting brand and region, in introducing varietal wines, and in adopting new technology and science.'' Lapsley introduces a gaggle of characters from the Napa wine trade--Andr‚ Tchelistcheff, the Mondavis, Gustave Niebaum of Inglenook--and struggles to make critical scientific advances understandable to his audience (malolactic fermentation tinkerings and protein-instability battles). But his emphasis lies in the economic whys and wherefores: Why did Beaulieu have enough capital to go fancy? How come Berlinger sold out to Nestle, Beaulieu to Heublein? What caused the slumps in the wine industry this century? Instead of assaulting readers with dreaded winespeak--a prose as deeply purple as any zinfandel--Lapsley pummels them with comments from the director for corporate business development at Coca-Cola and snippets from Arthur D. Little studies on the growing fashionableness of wine in upper-income groups in the 1970s. While Lapsley provides intriguing nuggets, he also projects an irksome snobbishness: petit sirah is deemed vulgar; Cabernet is his bet, which doesn't show a whole lot of imagination. An air of dissertation pervades this book, drawn as it is form doctoral studies, and Lapsley comes across as dry and formal- -very much like the Bordeaux grape he so appreciates. The Story of the Emergence of American Fine Wine
By Mark Vincent
I bought this book about a year or so ago and for some reason couldn't get motivated to read it. However, once I finally picked it up and started reading, I was quickly hooked and blew through it in a day or two. For anyone seriously interested in American wine and its history, this is a fascinating and highly insightful overview of Napa Valley wine from the end of Prohibition until the 1980's, by which time Napa was the premier name in American wine.

I am pretty familiar with the general history of American wine and have read a fair amount about California wine. Nevertheless, it was fascinating to learn how winemakers and marketers evolved from the truly awful Californian wine at the end of Prohibition into producing good wines people would buy and enjoy drinking. Its focus is heavily on those companies that drove the initial success of Californian wine post Prohibition - Beringer, Beaulier, Charles, Krug, Christian Brothers, and Inglenook - and it concludes with a postscript, written in 1996, that updates the reader on the ultimate fate and status of those companies.

I highly recommend this book for the insights it provides into the forces that shaped an industry and led wineries from the mass selling of bulk wines of plonk character into the production of bottled wines of premium quality. The author does an exceptional job of detailing the re-emergence of the wine business in America, including the cultural and business forces that drove both the eventual emergence of quality wine and the making of Napa's premier image. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in wine, as well as for students of both history and business; it includes great insights into how the successful companies marketed and promoted their wines to achieve their success.

You'll find it an enjoyable and interesting read. I rate it 4.5

History of Winemaking in Napa as Good as its Wine
By Bret Harte
You might want to read this fine history as a part of a course of studies in viticulture or enology. It will complete your understanding of how we got to where we are today in winemaking, especially in the heart of California. For those wine enthusiasts interested in the rich history of winemaking and enjoy a good story, this volume goes down well and has a fine finish!

Terrible...

The books are tiny. The pictures are monotonous. The entire story is like a sentence long. There's absolutely nothing to grab an infant or toddler, and not enough story to grab anyone older. Useless.

HISTORY AND THE CAMBRIDGE PROFESSOR
By DAVID BRYSON
Professor Page's scholarship is deep and wide, a bit like the roaring torrent in Longfellow's Excelsior. One is never left in much doubt what he thinks, and L R Palmer remarks drily in Myceneans and Minoans that 'he is bolder in expression' than are professional archaeologists. To be fair, one is never left in any doubt either as to why he thinks as he does. He presents his evidence and argues his case with absolute frankness. More than that, he is a very good read, and those interested in the story of the siege of Troy and the value of the Iliad as a record of what took place will find this attractively and often amusingly written book an absorbing account of the matter, for all the paraphernalia of professional scholarship.

Denys Page was formerly professor of Greek at Cambridge, and this book constitutes, with some additions, the text of the six Sather classical lectures that he was invited to give at Berkeley in the winter of 1957. Their timing was good. The decipherment of the Linear B tablets, found both on the Peloponnese and at the Palace of Minos in Crete, had only just happened. Moreover it was not long (by classical standards) since the important work of Milman Parry in establishing that the Iliad was the outcome of a folk-tradition of unwritten oral poetry. England more than anywhere else had some recanting to do in the latter respect. Parry's conclusions had been anticipated to a certain extent by some of the great German scholars e.g. Lachmann, to be answered with the most insufferable British condescension by the type of scholar witheringly described by Housman as 'an Englishman demonstrating the unity of Homer by sneers at "Teutonic professors", who are supposed by his audience to have goggle eyes behind large spectacles and ragged moustaches saturated in lager beer, and consequently to be incapable of forming literary judgments'. Page is on the side of the angels, and his second appendix to the book, on multiple authorship in the Iliad, is a model of clarity in putting over a case that I hope by now needs less strenuous advocacy.

On the historical side Page is on less familiar ground. He is better known for his work on Greek texts and linguistic issues. I am slightly more at home on those sides too (si parua licet componere magnis), so when I say I find Page slightly less convincing as a historian, please make allowances for that. One sees the two sides of him very clearly in the first chapter, on references to Achaean Greeks in Hittite documents. He makes a good-sounding case for the identification of Achaean Rhodes as being the 'Ahhijawa' of the Hittites, but hardly one that justifies the sublime self-confidence of his conclusion, more one of the kind that provoked some superciliousness from Palmer. On the other hand he makes a right old meal of supposed linguistic difficulties in equating Ahhijawa with the Greek Akhaia. Sure, one mustn't jump to conclusions from such seeming resemblances, but his case is based not on those but on historical arguments, and it needs no professor come from Cambridge to tell us that Ahhijawa is not a legitimate Greek formation, and maybe not a legitimate Hittite one either. I could have told him that myself. What we are talking about is how a Greek name might have been distorted by the barbarophone Hittites, and that does not need elaborate linguistic processes. Mumbai was Bombay for long enough, and Beijing Peking, among English-speakers, after all.

Where I found Page absolutely excellent was in his analysis of the relationship between the catalogues in book II of the Iliad and the main text as we now have it. Surely his conclusion must be right - the two show strong communality in vocabulary and startling divergence in their versions of the story, proving to me what Page says they prove, namely a common centuries-old origin and subsequent separation.

You can enjoy this book without even being able to read Greek script let alone understand the language. Even in the daunting-looking notes to each chapter Page's delightful turns of phrase are entertaining as well as instructive. He is a gifted narrator as well, and when I think about the strange Mycenaean civilisation, part epic glory from the poets part a bureaucratic nightmare that the European Commission might envy, as shown on the Linear B documents; and then when I think about the sudden silence with the onset of the uncouth Dorians, it's likely to be Page's telling of it all that will stick with me for a while.

Troy and History
By Richard I. Pervo
Whether you are a "Homeric fundamentalist" of the schliemann mold who believes all the epic details or the type who is willing to dismiss Homer as literature, this classic study has something to offer.
To the former P. makes such a strong case for the antiquity of the catalogue of ships that one cannot doubt the conclusion that it long antedates the epic. The former will learn beyond a doubt that the nature of Mycenean society was "forgotten" by the time the Iliad took shape. Survivals there are, probably enough data to make the fact of a Trojan war probable.
P. writes very well. even those without ancient languages can follow him--a benefit of the Sather Lectures, public addresses, standing behind this.
much has been done since, but this remains a good place to begin.

A Bargain.
By Tacitus
Even after 50 years this is still probably the best and most balanced overview of the relationship between the Iliad and the Mycenaean world as revealed by the Linear B tablets and by archaeology.

Punjabi Century, 1857-1947, by Prakash Tandon

An important document in the social history of India, this volume presents the autobiography of a Punjabi family over the three tumultuous generations that spanned years from the Mutiny to Independence. The book provides an absorbing view, from within, of what British rule meant for the educated elite of the province. In its descriptions of the changing customs and values of the educated Indian in the early twentieth century, the book affords a memorable account of a critical period in modern Indian history.

A superb account of a Punjabi family in transition.
By A Customer
This is an absolutely superb account of a Punjabi family in transition, during a century of massive change that takes in the fading Mughal Empire in the 19th century and goes through the period of British colonial rule in the 19th and 20th centuries and finally to India's Independence in 1947. This is all seen though the eyes of a family in Punjab, which successfully makes the transition from old traditions to modernity, as seen through the thoughtful eyes of the author, who eventually becomes the first Indian Chairman of a renowned British multinational company in India and finally a leading senior manager in India's public sector. The author was also the first Chairman of the famous Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, set up together with the Harvard Business School and financial support from the Ford Foundation. Written with a verve and a keen and observant eye, it is socio-economic history at its very best. A must read for all Punjabis from India and Pakistan and for all general readers interested in the sub-continent plus all scholars of South Asia..It is a shame that this book it is out of print. The publisher should be encouraged to bring it back into print again!

A rare gem
By Amazon Customer
This book is a rare gem, a mix of Russel Bakers 'Growing Up' and Ahmed Ali's 'Twilight in Delhi'. Prakash Tandon, founder of IIM A, was born in 1911. He traces the history of his family from 1847, about the time the rule of the Sikhs (Sikha Shahi)ended, to 1947. Unlike the rest of India (apart from Hyderabad),Punjab was never ruled by the East India company. When the British took over, many welcomed the change and stability. The Khatris amongst the Punjabis were the first to embrace formal British education. By 1911,as Tandon notes, the engineering services in some districts were managed entirely by Indian staff.

As a child Mr. Tandon grows up in small towns and villages, moving with his father who works as an engineer managing the canal system. He describes a Baisakhi festival on the banks of a river in one such village in photographic detail. Later, he completes his education in a small town called Gujrat, at the foothills of what today would be Pakistani occupied Kashmir. Vividly described, the way of life of this small town, and the ups and downs of Mr. Tandon's family during those years form the core of this book. Pran Nevile attempts a copy of this with his poorly written 'Lahore' but fails to get that emotional touch.

Much of this books success is precisely that- a story of a whole community told through the life of one family with a personal touch. The book ends with the parition and the family's crossing over to India at the wagah border.

A Treasure
By WhoWasJohnG
Mr. Tandon wrote the book that surprisingly no one ever thought of writing. The book is sort of a biography of a family .. in it he has masterfully woven the whole society around it, though the reader never would realize his till you finish the book. He describes the society, the cultre and traditions from the past with great care love and nostalgia. His command of the subject is complete, I didn't find a single thing he wrote that I had known to be otherwise!!!

From the Inside Flap
Praise for previous editions:

“To all of us who delightedly and sometimes repetitively call ourselves Old India hands, Stanley Wolpert is the acknowledged authority. This book tells why. Indian history, art, culture, and contemporary politics are here in accurate, wide-ranging, and lucid prose."—John Kenneth Galbraith

“Wolpert understands India. . . . . Fluent, wide-ranging and often wise, this volume is a useful addition to a shelf of books on India.”—Washington Post Book World

“A superb distillation of a lifetime's learning by UCLA's great historian of India. Refreshingly concrete and detailed, [and] vibrantly written, Wolpert's overview repeatedly succeeds at explaining a culture that gave us little things like the decimal system, chess, cotton cloth, meditation, and two religions called Buddhism and Hinduism.”—Philadelphia Inquirer

“If one were to read a single book about India in a lifetime, this should be it.”—Library Journal

About the Author
Stanley Wolpert is the author of fourteen books, including A New History of India, now in its eighth edition, and Gandhi's Passion: The Life and Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. He has taught the history of India and Pakistan at the University of California, Los Angeles, since 1958.

It takes a true expert to write a short book about India
By Pawel Stefanski
A very good, comprehensive yet short (less than 240 pages) and readable overview to all the major topics: geography, history, philosophy and religion, society, arts and sciences, and policy. Worth reading to get started on this immense and diverse country.

Good starting place
By The OC
I read several books on China before taking a tour there in 2012. I hope to go to India in the future and wanted to do similar preparatory reading on that country. I found looking for books on China was easier than finding what I wanted on India. My first need was an overall picture of its history and society. This book does a good job in meeting that need. It is written clearly. That's a good thing because I do find India to be more complex and harder to understand in both its history and evolving modern society. The history is bound up in Hinduism with its many gods and myths. (Religions that came to the "one God" conclusion certainly simplified things for themselves regardless of what other faults or strengths they may have). The caste system, while fading under modern education and politics, still has a grip on much of the population. There is a very large Muslim population and many ethnic groups. Like China, an increasingly large middle class is still surrounded by great poverty. And there is substantial corruption in both governments. I have a lot more to learn but this was a good starting place.

Awkward writing makes reading difficult
By John L.
Writing style is so awkward it gets in the way of otherwise interesting material. What should have been relatively light reading for a history book is weighed down by the absence of effective editing.
