Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape, by Frans de Waal, Frans Lanting

This remarkable primate with the curious name is challenging established views on human evolution. The bonobo, least known of the great apes, is a female-centered, egalitarian species that has been dubbed the "make-love-not-war" primate by specialists. In bonobo society, females form alliances to intimidate males, sexual behavior (in virtually every partner combination) replaces aggression and serves many social functions, and unrelated groups mingle instead of fighting. The species's most striking achievement is not tool use or warfare but sensitivity to others.

In the first book to combine and compare data from captivity and the field, Frans de Waal, a world-renowned primatologist, and Frans Lanting, an internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer, present the most up-to-date perspective available on the bonobo. Focusing on social organization, de Waal compares the bonobo with its better-known relative, the chimpanzee. The bonobo's relatively nonviolent behavior and the tendency for females to dominate males confront the evolutionary models derived from observing the chimpanzee's male power politics, cooperative hunting, and intergroup warfare. Further, the bonobo's frequent, imaginative sexual contacts, along with its low reproduction rate, belie any notion that the sole natural purpose of sex is procreation. Humans share over 98 percent of their genetic material with the bonobo and the chimpanzee. Is it possible that the peaceable bonobo has retained traits of our common ancestor that we find hard to recognize in ourselves?

Eight superb full-color photo essays offer a rare view of the bonobo in its native habitat in the rain forests of Zaire as well as in zoos and research facilities. Additional photographs and highlighted interviews with leading bonobo experts complement the text. This book points the way to viable alternatives to male-based models of human evolution and will add considerably to debates on the origin of our species. Anyone interested in primates, gender issues, evolutionary psychology, and exceptional wildlife photography will find a fascinating companion in Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape.

Amazon.com Review
For Frans de Waal, man is not the only moral entity, as he made clear in his last book--Good Natured: The Origins of Right and Wrong in Humans and Other Animals. The author has long been intrigued by chimpanzee politics and mores, and now he has turned his human heart and scientific mind to a species science has tended to celebrate solely for its sex drive. Bonobos may look like chimps, but they are actually even closer to us--far more upright, physically, for a start. Furthermore, where chimpanzees hunt, fight, and politic like mad, bonobos are peaceful, often ambisexual, and matriarchal. (Of course, hyenas are matriarchal too, but that's another story ...) De Waal's collaborator, Frans Lanting, has been photographing these gentle creatures for some years and augments the primatologist's explorations and interviews with hundreds of superb color shots. The penultimate picture is of bonobos crossing a road while schoolchildren stand watching, a short distance away. If, as the truism goes, all books about animal behavior are ultimately about us, this exploration of the bonobo may be a step in the right direction.

From Booklist
Bonobos, formerly called "pygmy chimpanzees," are the least known of the great apes. This wonderful book by a preeminent primatologist does much to introduce the general reader to one of our closest relatives. Covering studies undertaken both in captivity and in the species' natural habitat in Zaire, de Waal's riveting account compares bonobo behavior with that of the better-known chimpanzee and with humans. Complemented by Frans Lanting's coffee-table-quality photographs of wild and captive bonobos, the chapters cover the discovery of the bonobo (in 1929), its habitat and how it shaped the species' behavior, and the fears for the future of wild bonobos in an unstable region. Interviews with researchers provide a full picture of scientific studies, and extensive notes pertaining to each chapter explain many concepts in greater detail. This highly recommended book should be in all libraries. One minor warning: bonobos engage in all forms of sexual contact, and this behavior is fully explored in both the text and the photos. Nancy Bent

From Kirkus Reviews
Notes toward an understanding of the bonobo, Africa's most elusive primate, from the always engaging de Waal, a noted primatologist (Good Natured, 1996). De Waal and photographer Lanting have crafted a book likely to appeal to a large audience, combining hard-won information with superb, provocative images. The bonobo, a close relative of the chimpanzee, exists only in a tiny community in the remote forest reaches of northern Zaire. It has been the subject of little research, yet what is known of the species (through fieldwork and zoo studies) is intriguing. The bonobo, de Waal notes, is ``a creature of considerable intellect with a secure sense of its place in the world . . . so akin to ourselves that the dividing line is seriously blurred.'' But the bonobo is very much its own species, living in a peaceful egalitarian society (female dominant), one that substitutes sex for aggression, with ``a varied, almost imaginative, eroticism.'' While the sexual aspect is absorbing and gets plenty of attention here, de Waal also probes social organization, methods of raising offspring, modes of communication, and status in the wild. He knits together the work done on bonobos (displaying an impressive talent for synthesizing his own work with that of others and presenting it in a commonsensical, elegant voice), and provides some clearly argued theories about why bonobo society is the way it is: Prolonged sexual attractiveness in the females, it is suggested, led to same-sex sexuality, which led to female alliances and thus female dominance; in males, a reduced competition for mates led to reduced alliances, obscured paternity, and reduced infanticide. Sadly, even in its obscure patch of land the peaceful bonobo is threatened, stalked by poachers and facing a dwindling habitat. A fascinating, delightfully successful treatment of an arresting creature. (75 color photos, 9 b&w photos, 9 maps and drawings) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Gentle apes in the heart of darkness...and they are politically correct, too!
By Ashtar Command
Who could imagine that there are gentle apes living in the very heart of darkness, north-central Congo-Kinshasa, somewhere around Colonel Kurtz' proverbial hunting grounds? :-)

"Bonobo. The Forgotten Ape" is a popularized book about the least known great ape. The bonobo wasn't officially discovered by science until 1929. There had been bonobos in captivity before that time, but scientists assumed they were chimpanzees, albeit very gentle and very smart ones! For a long time, the bonobo was mostly studied by German scientists who published their findings in obscure journals such as "Säugetierkundliche Mitteilungen". The Anglo-Saxon scientific community didn't pay much attention until the 1970's and 1980's, and even then, much of the research was carried out by Japanese scientists, rather than Westerners. To the general public, bonobos are probably still quite unknown. I heard of bonobos already as a kid, but I assumed they were simply a smaller subspecies of chimp. Back then, bonobos were known as "Pygmy Chimpanzees". Curiously, the myth of the killer ape never reached my neighbourhood, so I grew up assuming that chimps were peaceful. They are not. Bonobos, however, are. Which finally brings us to the reason why these apes are so interesting!

Bonobos and chimpanzees are closely related, and both of them are equally close to humans. Yet, the two species are very different. To simplify somewhat, chimpanzees are patriarchal, aggressive, heterosexual and carnivorous. Bonobos, by contrast, are matriarchal, peaceful, bisexual and near-vegan! Politically correct apes? Who ever heard of such a thing? Since both chimps and bonobos are equally closely related to humans, this makes it harder to claim that humans are necessarily patriarchal or aggressive "by nature". Indeed, some scientists believe that "the missing link" may have more closely resembled a bonobo than a chimp. While none of this proves much in and of itself, it's nevertheless intriguing. Of course, the trait bonobos are mostly known for, is that they have sex for non-reproductive reasons, including "gay" and "lesbian" sex. Unfortunately, they also practice paedophilia.

"Bonobo. The Forgotten Ape" contains seven chapters summarizing the bonobo basics. It contains interviews with scientists studying the bonobos, both those living in the jungles of the Congo, and those preferring the relative safety of American zoos. The text is easy to read, but could perhaps have been better written or edited. (Yes, I'm a perfectionist, and Frans de Waal's books, although interesting, tend to fall short of my splendidly high standards.)

The best part of the book are Frans Lanting's full-color photos. Since the book is almost coffee table format, this makes it a worthwhile buy for every nature-lover, photo-lover or ape-lover, including those too busy to read the text! The most exciting photos are those showing the bonobos in almost erect position, standing on two legs. In bipedal position, the bonobos look almost human, especially the females.

You get the feeling that they are us, and that we are indeed the third chimpanzee. Or the second bonobo...

Our Gentle Cousins
By Valerie J. Saturen
In the popular imagination, the word "ape" conjures a brutish image, evoking a bestial human past in which life contained little more than the ruthless struggle for dominance. Until relatively recently, our knowledge of our genetic cousins seemed to confirm this picture; most apes, including chimps, have strongly hierarchical societies characterized by male dominance and frequent power struggles. The bonobo, however, has shattered scientists' assumptions about primate behavior. This book provides a fascinating glimpse into the complex lives of these gentle apes.

If bonobos could chant slogans, they would probably be imploring us to "make love, not war." Physically, bonobos differ little from other chimps, except for their smaller size. Yet their social lives are remarkably different. Although males are larger and capably of physically dominating females, female bonobos enjoy dominance within a relaxed, relatively fluid hierarchy. Unlike chimps, which can be quite violent toward members of their own species, bonobos are adept at resolving conflicts. Mostly, they achieve this through sexual behavior that would make any fundamentalist preacher turn purple (including homosexuality). Both in the wild and in captivity, they display a level of emotional intelligence that is amazing to find in a nonhuman animal, which the book documents through striking, often humorous anecdotes.

De Waal offers an intriguing discussion of how the bonobo's unique society may have evolved. Interestingly, he postulates that females became promiscuous, bonded with other females, and developed nearly year-round displays of sexual receptivity in order to counter the male habit of infanticide that sometimes occurs in chimps. Since females banded together to defend each other (and each other's offspring), and since males had no way of telling which offspring was their own, infanticide apparently disappeared. Meanwhile, as a result of their bonding, females became dominant.

Lanting's photos are striking, most of all because of the humanlike quality that comes through in so many of them. There is an astonishing...moving, in fact...familiarity in their facial expressions, intelligent eyes, gestures, and postures.

It is deeply tragic that this species, like so many, is threatened with possible extinction. Even though we have much more to learn about bonobos, their behavior raises thought-provoking questions about "human nature" and where we come from. Perhaps the "ape within" has a capacity for not only violence and patriarchy, but for cooperation and female influence as well.

Another fine effort by de Waal
By magellan
Most people are familiar with chimps but few have heard of the bonobo, but we resemble them behaviorally more than any of the other great apes. Also I recall reading once that we have the greatest genetic similarity to bonobos. I forget the exact figure, but humans share something like 99.5 percent of their genetic material with bonobos.
De Waal teamed up with internationally acclaimed nature photographer Hans Lanting to produce not only a very scholarly but very readable and interesting book, and a visually very striking one as well.
There are many similarities between bonobo behavior and humans, and ways in which they differ from other apes. Females have higher social standing in bonobo society compared to chimps, and high-ranking males never stay that way for long unless they have the support of at least a high-ranking female or two.
Females also cooperate more than in other apes. They have been observed working together to drive off an aggressive male, which doesn't happen in chimps. Females are also very social, and seek to establish alliances with other males. This can come in handy in various ways. For example, during the mating season, if a a male the female doesn't like wants to mate, she can effectively rebuff his attempts by getting her other male friends to come to her aid. They even resemble us in their sexual behavior, since they are the only ape observed to use the missionary position during sex, which they do about half the time.
This is just a small sample of the many interesting and thought-provoking things I picked up from reading this book. Overall, a fascinating and very visually appealing presentation on this little-known and understood relative among the great apes.

Four More Screenplays by Preston Sturges, by Preston Sturges

Includes The Palm Beach Story, Triumph over Pain/The Great Moment, The Miracle at Morgan's Creek, and Unfaithfully Yours.

Humorous, sophisticated, and superbly crafted, the cinema of Preston Sturges maintains an enduring presence in the small canon of films that enjoy critical acclaim, scholarly attention, and popular admiration. Following the enthusiastic reception of Five Screenplays by Preston Sturges, the University of California Press returns with Four More.

This volume contains three scripts widely regarded as among the filmmaker's best: The Palm Beach Story, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, and Unfaithfully Yours. Based on the actual shooting scripts rather than the final screen versions, these screenplays contain scenes that were not filmed or that disappeared on the cutting room floor.

In the fourth script, Triumph over Pain/The Great Moment, Sturges dramatizes the career of W.T.G. Morton, the doctor who first demonstrated the use of ether and thus revolutionized surgery. Arguably the most important biographical film project of the 1940s, this film was recut and rearranged by Paramount before it was released. By reprinting Sturges's original script and explaining its transformation, Brian Henderson has, in effect, discovered a new work by Sturges.

In the introductions that precede each screenplay, Henderson examines every important aspect of the screenplay's composition. He analyzes Sturges's process of constant revision, discusses variant drafts and fragments of drafts, and describes the writer/director's relations with Paramount executives, the Church, the Hayes Office, and Darryl Zanuck.

Alone or as a companion to the earlier volume, this work will be welcomed by scholars, film buffs, screenplay writers, and admirers of Preston Sturges.

"Henderson's new book, which includes accounts of the genesis of each script, also indirectly vindicates Sturges's skills as a film director and film shaper: In less capable hands his risky comic ideas and mixing of slapstick with high comedy could have collapsed into a silly mess."--Whit Stillman, "Wall Street Journal

Great comedy films
By George Matusek
Contains the screenplay for "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" (to my taste, the most hilarious film of all time). When I worked as a cataloger at Newport Public Library, I constantly told my co-workers that I thought Preston Sturges wrote better dialogue than Shakespeare. I could prune lines from "Hamlet," but I couldn't cut a single line from "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek."

At Home on the Earth: Becoming Native to Our Place: A Multicultural AnthologyFrom University of California Press

Nature writing, as Thoreau knew, can be deeply subversive because it points to ways of living that diverge fundamentally from dominant attitudes. Thoreau would have welcomed these essays by America's most important nature writers, for in exploring our intrinsic relationship with the earth, they also consider our alienation from nature and how that alienation is manifested.

The book's principal focus is on the possibilities of being at home on the earth: Finding place, reinhabitation, and becoming native. The collection begins with essays by N. Scott Momaday and Leslie Marmon Silko, who accentuate the links between culture and nature. Other essays speak to the loss of place and to being stewards of nature and of bioregionalism, nativeness, and of interdependent communities, be they in rural areas or urban neighborhoods. Several essays address how our current ideologies of growth and individualism run counter to a sustainable relationship to the land and to each other. In the final three essays, Gary Snyder critiques various views of nature, Alice Walker articulates a vision of a responsive universe, and Linda Hogan celebrates the interaction of nature and human habitation. The contributors' views, writings, and contexts are variegated, but all share a sense that human identity is intimately tied to the land one lives on. And as in an ecosystem, the collection's great diversity yields abundant riches.

At Home on the Earth represents the cutting edge of environmental thinking in the United States today. Throughout, the interactions between humans and nature convey a politics of hope, one sustained by faith in place itself. As Gary Snyder writes, "We are all indigenous to this planet, this mosaic of wild gardens we are being called by nature and history to reinhabit in good spirit."

"The physical earth is clearly under unprecedented siege—heated, toxified, scraped. But almost as if they were antibodies, the finest nature writers of any era have come forward to help in the fight. This anthology collects many of the most important, at their most eloquent. May it ring and echo and do some good!"—Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature

"This is a stunning collection of vivid writing about landscapes and the people who inhabit them. The diverse narratives gathered here do more than describe hawks diving and twigs snapping, although the book has its share of moving accounts of the natural world. A concern to live responsibily in nature runs through this evocative anthology like a subterranean stream, and that moral impulse, together with the lively prose, makes this the best collection of nature writing I've seen."—Thomas A. Empire and Islam: Punjab and the Making of Pakistan (Comparative Studies on Muslim Societies), by David Gilmartin

Emerging from the partition of India in 1947, Pakistan was a product of the first and perhaps the most successful of those twentieth-century movements which sought to bring about an Islamic transformation of the post-colonial state. But the evolution of Islam's role in the Pakistan movement has long been debated. This book examines the problem through a detailed study of Muslim politics in the Punjab—Pakistan's largest and most important province—in the decades leading up to India's partition. Gilmartin argues that an understanding of Muslim politics in this period depends on an understanding of the close interaction between the ideology and structure of the British colonial empire on the one hand, and the structure of Islamic organization and ideas on the other.

The British imperial state rejected religion as a foundation for its central authority, yet its structure encouraged the development of forms of rural Islam adapted to local organization and to the hierarchical and mediatory ideology of the imperial state. At the same time, alien colonial domination encouraged the growth of "communalism" and eventually of Muslim "nationalism," particularly in Punjab's cities—thus posing new ideological challenges to the British Raj.

The tensions inherent in the structure and ideology of colonial organization thus provide the backdrop for the study. Gilmartin's extensive use of private papers, biographies, and autobiographies of prominent as well as less prominent political leaders helps give this study a balanced viewpoint. He also draws on a range of popular and private Urdu materials that lend the book an authentic voice.

This study will be welcomed by students of colonial empire and by those interested in Islam's role in the modern world.

By Mentalfloss1
This is "the" book for those of us who want to know the many aspects of mountains, their history, geology, geography, affects on wars and culture, and much more. Dr. Price was my advisor in college. I need to reveal that. But this book is nearly unique and you should add it to your bookshelf if you hike, backpack, or are just interested in mountains.

The Three Faces of Chinese Power: Might, Money, and Minds, by David M. Lampton

Clear, comprehensive, and well-balanced, this unique assessment takes the measure of what is arguably the most important geopolitical change in today's world: the growth of China's power. In the only book on the subject to be based on extensive interviews with elite political leaders, diplomats, and others in China, the United States, and countries on China's periphery, David M. Lampton investigates the military, economic, and intellectual dimensions of China's growing influence. His account provides a fresh perspective from which to assess China—how its strengths are changing, where vulnerabilities and uncertainties lie, and how the rest of the world, not least the United States, should view it. Lampton gives a valuable historical framework by discussing how the Chinese have thought about state power for over 2,500 years, and he asks how they are thinking about the future use of power through instruments such as their space program. He also provides broad suggestions for policy toward China in light of the 2008 elections in the United States and China's hosting of the Olympic Games, in a book that is essential reading for understanding one of the most significant developments of the twenty-first century.

The Three Faces of Chinese Power is rich in contemporary political science and economic content relating to the modern China. The book has excellent references illustrating theory to define new notions of power.

I highly recommend this book to any person who is seriously seeking to understand modern China in the 21st Century. Mr. Lampton's book will help readers integrate other source acquired knowledge gained from books, journals and daily news sources in understanding the United States economic and diplomatic relations with New China. David Lampton's book is, in a word, "IMPRESSIVE." It will stay in my library a good while.

Informative and Insightful!
By Loyd Eskildson
The People's Republic of China (PRC) is the largest, most rapidly changing player on the world stage today. Lampton has not only studied the PRC for 38 years, but also visited and interviewed its top leaders. He believes that China will be fully occupied for the next 10-15+ years dealing with its domestic employment (providing employment to the 10 million labor-market entrants each year, plus the 300 million more leaving its farms between now and 2020), technology development, education, health care, natural resource, environment, and infrastructure needs and will not be a destabilizing force. Just its need for new cities to accommodate anticipated migration requires creating building new cities the size of New York every four months for 14 years.

Lambert begins "The Three Faces of Chinese Power" by carefully defining the term 'power' - "the authoritative ability to define and achieve objectives;" methods to achieve this include 'might' (coercive power though military action), 'money' (can obtain coercive power, influence others through potential purchases), and 'minds' (ideational, soft power reflected in quality of leadership and innovation). After studying China's approach to state power dating back some 2,500 years, Lampton concludes that their aim is to win domestic and international support for its agenda, see it through to implementation, utilize an optimum mix of power sources to maximize efficiency, and "desist from pursuing policies that prove ineffective or counterproductive."

China's military budget has been growing at double-digit rates for about 15 years (not adjusted for inflation), while cutting ground forces since the 1980s. Our Department of Defense (DOD) estimates China could currently have 60 ICBMs. China's most serious concern is that Taiwan might try to break away, and they have deployed 700-800 missiles within striking distance, upgraded their naval and air forces, and repeatedly discourage the U.S. from getting involved. Chinese sources claim its 2009 military spending was 1.7% of GDP; however, that's likely an understatement - akin to U.S. budget practice that separates considerable portions of DOD spending from its main budget line. Regardless, China despite its recent forays into space, is by no means a peer military competitor with the U.S., though it is in a league with the U.K. and Russia and even one ICMB merits serious consideration. Lampton sees its economic and ideational powers as much stronger, however, and likely to be the most important in the long run.

Economic power is the most convertible form of strength, and China has plenty of that. However, Lampton also points out that firms with foreign investment accounted for 57.3% of its total exports, and an even higher 85% of high-tech exports. Thus, it is easy to overestimate China's export power, and forget that trade barriers would punish both the U.S. and its allies. (China is now making investments in U.S. companies and building solar etc. plants here to further help defend against protectionism.) Conversely, Lampton sees a tendency to underestimate China's government-directed purchasing strength. Access to China's vast markets for eg. nuclear power, communications and transportation gear, backed up by equally vast currency reserves give it considerable power to negotiate prices, compel technology transfers, and influence policy (eg. embargo purchases from U.S. companies that impede its interests). It's infrastructure and resource investments in Africa, Australia, Latin America (planned $100 billion by 2014), and even Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq give China considerable world-stage political power as well.

Former President Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents" speech in 2002 emphasized the importance of representing the developmental needs and a majority of China's populace. This focus then led to allowing the formerly reviled entrepreneurial class to join its Chinese Communist Party (CCP) - broadening the mind-power within its leadership group while co-opting that group at the same time. By 2004 34% of private enterprise owners were CCP members. Other components of China's efforts to strengthen minds include a one-third increase in the proportion of GDP devoted to public education, large numbers of outstanding students sent abroad for university educations and scientific training (also increasing efforts to have them return), encouraging the establishment of some 750 foreign-backed R&D centers within China by 2006, and its intent to establish a world-ranked top-20 university by 2020. Lampton notes that China's foreign-service personnel are especially well-educated and trained.

Lampton served as an advisor to candidate Obama, and may still be contributing advice to President Obama. If so, Lampton would probably repeat his book's conclusions that China is too big and important, with too many other nations interested in cooperating with it, to be pushed around. We should stop seeing China principally as a military challenge, thereby squandering our own resources and possibly provoking the truculence we want to avoid. Instead, Lampton believes we should work together on the environment, global warming, pandemic prevention, etc. As for competing economically with China, Lampton points out that we cannot do so when our expenditures for health care so much higher (17.3% vs. their 4%), our largely unmitigated dependence on external foreign oil purchases, and an ineffectual (and more costly) K-12 education system. Lampton could also add that our much higher proportion of expenditures on defense is another impediment to economic competitiveness.

No major international challenge can be met today without China's assistance - witness current U.S. problems with Iran and North Korea, and note also that Afghanistan, North Korea, and Pakistan all border China. However, it should not be seen as a modern-day Eden - over half its citizens live on incomes typical of the world's poorest states, and its environmental problems are well-known. While straight-line projections of past performance can be wildly off the mark (eg. Japan in the 1990s, Russia's Sputnik in the 1960s), most believe China's power will continue to grow rapidly. Meanwhile, both China and the U.S. continue to gamble that the other will not be a disturbance.

Bottom-Line: Lampton's "The Three Faces of Chinese Power" is a thoughtful and informative resource that helps understand the motivation and direction of its leaders. Further, his recommendations are solidly grounded. However, I would suggest adding three:

1)That we become much more courteous vs. China and stop publicly lecturing it about human rights, Tibet, etc., especially within its own territory. (We have serious governance problems of our own, including a disproportionate emphasis on campaign cash, and an inability to resolve major problems.)

2)That instead of constantly criticizing China we instead learn from it. For example, why and how the Chinese save so much (30-40% over the years, vs. our recent negative savings), how they inculcate such strong respect for education and build upon it with high-stakes testing requirements to enter college, the potential advantages of a government industrial policy, and how they have used protectionism to nurture nascent and vital industries. In addition, we should take a page from Lampton's thinking and reconsider government policies that have proven counterproductive - eg. aid to Israel, stationing troops in 100+ countries, and providing corporate farm aid that allows our farms to undercut Mexican farmers and drive them northward in waves of illegal migration.

3)That we recognize the Tienanmen Square tragedy of 1989 could easily have escalated into something far worse. The demonstrations were replicated in major cities across China, had gone on for weeks, and were intensifying - possibly into a civil war and another disastrous Cultural Revolution. Thus, there was some justification to fear that all its recent reforms and improvements would quickly have been lost. I suspect its new middle and upper-classes, along with many of the aspiring lower class would now agree with the actions then taken.

Tough Read
By M. Everest
I haven't finished this book yet, but I am enjoying it. It is a difficult read, smaller print and a very interesting choice of words. I often find myself re-reading a sentance to make sure I understood the authors intent. I think the material is relevant to those who are interested in the ever growing China and how the US will be challenged by them in the future. Reads very much like a text book, which was OK because I bought this book to learn something.
