In Skin Deep, second-generation Chicano David Loya returns to the Los Angeles barrio after having risen to New York City's social stratosphere via his success as a corporate lawyer. A graduate of Harvard, Loya finds great material success by age 30. Then a call for help from a college friend takes him back to his old L.A. stomping grounds. At this point Garcia seems unsure of his purpose, and the book falls apart. As a novel of discovery, it fails because the development of Loya's character is marred by gaps and inconsistencies. As a thriller it fails because it lacks excitement and sustained action. Yet as a first novel is succeeds, for it shows Garcia to be a writer with potential despite the rough edges. Martin J. Bales (Understanding Global Slavery) provides a guide for eliminating the plague of slavery that continues to this day, involving some 27 million slaves worldwide producing $13 billion in goods and services. Ending Slavery

Kevin Bales is a recognized world authority on the generally hidden phenomenon of modern slavery; he best known for Disposable People (1999), a standard and influential text in classrooms and with policy makers. Ending Slavery (2007) is his latest book which reveals updated information and additional heartbreaking stories, balanced by optimistic practical solutions for the audacious goal of ending slavery around the world. Either one of these books would be an excellent place to start learning about modern slavery for the average reader. While slavery can be a depressing subject, Ending Slavery is ultimately uplifting because of its success stories, of solutions working, of the world becoming a better place and ways to keep the momentum going. By the end of the book there is a practical plan of what to do next for everyone from the concerned citizen, community leader, governments and NGO.

Modern slavery is largely hidden from view because, unlike in the 19th century and earlier, slavery today is illegal everywhere and- like drugs- the problem has gone underground. There are an estimated 27 million slaves in the world today - by comparison in the entire 350 year history of the African slave trade, about 13 million slaves were brought to the New World. When talking about modern slavery this comparison to the African slave trade is often made, and for good reason, our culture is saturated with the history of slavery from the movie "Roots", the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" or Civil War history. If this cultural outrage of history were channeled to help modern slaves alive and toiling away today, imagine the good, but it starts with awareness. Most people don't know the basics of modern slavery: What is a modern slave? Where are they? What do they do? What can we do about it? This book answers those questions.

As the cover-picture of the book suggests, a happy discovery awaits within. After slavery comes freedom. New found freedom is one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable, both for slaves and those who help free them. It is no accident Lincoln, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu and others are among the most revered and popular leaders; or that the first and oldest human rights organization in the world is an anti-slave group (which still exists in England, connected to Kevin Bales). The struggle for freedom is far from over, and its happening everywhere from the suburbs of Washington DC to the cocoa (chocolate) plantations of Africa. Take the time to learn how slavery impacts us all, and what to do about it.

A Helpful, Smart, Practical Approach

As an author who has also written about slavery, I can say that Bales' many years' experience with the subject are apparent on every page. Avoiding sensationalism or unhelpful despair, Ending Slavery is an expert and pragmatic guide for all of us, rich and poor, interested in advancing the cause of human rights and general happiness.

We do not address problems of global poverty and slavery with our sympathy or pity. Bales' ability to articulate concrete, positive steps is invaluable.

This book goes far beyond its issue. By addressing the tangible, achieveable mechanisms by which we address the roots and causes of slavery, Bales also manages to shine a light toward ways we can help smooth the iniquities and anti-democratic tendencies resulting from the current mania for "globalization."

Ending Slavery is not luxury reading, a do-gooder tome for those of us with the leisure to care about poor foreigners in unimaginable situations. It's a technical manual for how we in the First World can save ourselves. As Bales has previously written (I hope I get this quote right), "slave labor anywhere threatens free labor everywhere." Slavery in a globalized world is not only wrong, but dangerous.

Clear,comprehensive diabetes/diet management

The first section is all about diabetes and I found it to be clear, comprehensive and very up to date. The book is worth its price just for this section. The book is well organized, well formatted and easy to read. The recipes cover most kinds of food and seem simple to make with most having less than 10 ingredients and 3 instructions. As a physician, I found this to be an excellent resource for my patients and I plan to recommend it first for diabetes and diet education.

Indispensable if you are serious about learning the language

If you have just started learning Greek and you think there is an easy way to master it, you should better stop fantasising. This book will never try to convince you that there is such a way. It would not be honest.

That is why you will find lots of grammar here. You will need it. You will appreciate later how clearly the material is presented, especially the notorious irregular verbs. Even after completing this book you will use it as a reference tool. This is one of the reasons why the book is such a good buy.

Another strong point of this book are exercises. They are very well planned and designed to achieve one single aim: to develop proper language structures in your brain. Important hint however: do not buy "The Introduction..." without the answer book. The exercises are not easy and you will need a confirmation that you are doing them properly.

One tiny little drawback. The editor's work could have been done better. It is generally good practice in editing books to use different sorts of type, like bold-faced one. Another idea, which is also not entirely bad (and one could expect that it should be understood by editors worldwide), is to organise the text into clear paragraphs instead of gathering it into big lumps which are not only difficult to read but also will destroy any attempt to find an information quickly. I hope this will be corrected in future editions.

A quality language text -- Wish there were more like it

As a linguist with a fair amount of experience in Asian languages (Mandarin and Classical/Literary Chinese), I was interested in approaching a language of a completely different nature: Attic Greek. After reading through a number of other reviews, I settled on this book and have been thrilled with my purchase ever since. Mastronarde gets the basic idea that vocabulary you can't effectively use (i.e. words for which you don't understand the associated grammar) is worthless and takes all the necessary precautions to make sure that by the time you learn a new term you know how it's used. The negative reviews I've seen for this book mainly have to do with it's grammar-centric composition (which is viewed as being slow to develop), but if you're going to learn a language with the aim to enjoy it for the rest of your life, why complain about using a text that'll be a little slower in the first two weeks but ultimately leave you with superior understanding?

This is a marvelous book, but I highly recommend purchasing Introduction to Attic Greek ANSWER BOOK as well. Morice's Stories in Attic Greek is another goodie as it allows you to see the language in action once you've covered the basics of declension and conjugation and provides some of the cultural knowledge necessary to fully engage an original text.

Self-study Standout

Along with its answer key (ISBN 0520201779)-- and its Electronic Workbook (ISBN 05202813) this text is particularly valuable for those of us mad enough to slog Ancient Greek on our own. One of its primary strengths lies in the clarity of its description of grammar. Mastronarde doesn't assume that you KNOW what a preposition is or a pronoun either for that matter. He provides very thorough and clear descriptions at every stage. And something you rarely see in this kind of text, he will suggest that you return to a particularly difficult stretch after moving on a few chapters--accentuation, for example. Great! He knows that some of us are human and older. Sometimes both. Also recommend the JACT (Joint Association of Classical Teachers) series--three books.
