The Architecture of Affordable Housing, by Sam Davis

That a country of wealth cannot provide sound housing for those in need is a national embarrassment. This book is about the design of dignified, affordable housing for those not served by the private sector, and how that housing fits comfortably into our communities. Sam Davis has written an accessible, non-technical analysis for everyone interested in the creation of affordable housing. Through discussions of cost, politics, and design concepts, as well as case studies of completed projects, he gives solutions to the dilemmas posed by the development process.

Good housing design is a delicate balance of community values, individual needs, esthetic judgments, and technical requirements. Good design can save money—seventy percent of the cost of a new dwelling is affected by planning and design. As a key ingredient in community building, housing should bestow on its inhabitants a sense of dignity, says Davis. To view this as a privilege for those who can afford market-rate housing invites both social and financial disaster. He also considers our national obsession with the single-family house and our historical ambivalence toward subsidized housing—attitudes that have often led to the stigmatization of low-income groups.

This book will be indispensable to community and volunteer groups, local governments, financial backers, architects, planners, and students in related fields.

From Library Journal
This thoughtful account of what used to be called public housing should be of interest to a broad spectrum of readers, from specialists to the general public. It is engagingly written by a recognized authority who has served as chair of the Department of Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley. Davis is a seasoned veteran of the housing wars across the country, and this book is replete with concrete case studies dating from the past 20 years. The chief virtue of the book is the tremendous variety of public housing it exhibits; architects never seem to tire of attempting to design better pubic housing wherever they work regardless of fractious approval processes, inhibiting rules and regulations, and discouraging economics. Recommended for all collections.

From Booklist
The architecture of affordable housing has assumed as many forms as the very nomenclature. Davis presents a history of poor, low-income, social, and subsidized housing using examples of Frank Lloyd Wright, the WPA, and contemporary case studies in the most expensive state in the union, California. These examples illustrate that while the beliefs surrounding affordable housing have changed, the need has been steady, if not growing. They also illustrate many myths, one being that affordable housing most often isn't any cheaper to build than market-rate housing. The in-depth documentation of the community planning process shows just how passionate the contesting parties are and how complex the issues have become. While not offering Wright's technical secrets on cost cutting, the California case studies lend the book a credibility from which both laypeople and architects can benefit. But, ultimately, the 10 award-winning projects the author presents as evidence of "good" architecture fulfilling a social need skirt the real issue: Why is it that award-winning projects can turn into unlivable places and that less attractive ones can be wonderful places to live? While the book is valuable, Davis does not address the issue of place-making and community, which many believe is the heart of the affordable housing crisis. William Huchting

Thorough and thoughtful review of affordable housing design and creation
By David Hoicka
The Architecture of Affordable Housing is a thoroughly researched 208 page book which focuses on affordable housing in the USA, with occasional comparison examples from other countries such as Canada, France, and Italy.

Sam Davis' book has illustrations on most pages, consisting of scores of photographs, building plans, neighborhood plans, 3d schematics, all carefully chosen to illustrate his analyses. He defines affordable housing as `housing that receives direct or indirect financial assistance' such as subsidy, grant, tax credit, or land donation. He compares American affordable housing, with the European concept of `social housing', which `implies that a responsible and humane society has an obligation to assist those of its members who could not otherwise have decent housing.

Sam Davis, a Professor of Architecture at University of California Berkeley, first discusses the function of the architect in affordable housing, as a reformer, a community activist, community development corporations, and discusses various goals and strategies for affordable housing design. Next, he discusses the actual process of creating affordable housing, including the conduct of public meetings, the development process, the `ripple effect' of individual design decisions on other aspects of a program, grassroots activities, building by consensus, planning board meetings, NIMBY, economic financial and political negations to achieve a positive outcome.

Davis next discusses issues regarding creation of affordable housing, such as cost and durability factors, community, site issues, prefabrication issues, contractors, regulations and codes, societal values and expectations for affordable housing. Next, he reviews a variety of affordable housing projects, comparing and contrasting, discussing issues such as density, design, attached or separate, materials and forms, planning for community, `making small seem large', flexibility, ornamentation and detailing, automobiles and pedestrian paths, including several detailed case studies.

In a significant part of the book, Davis rhetorically asks the question, `is affordable housing significant architecture?' and discusses `excellence and affordable housing' with numerous detailed examples, including photographs and plans.

Sam Davis' The Architecture of Affordable Housing, is a significant book for every affordable housing practitioner, and well worth its purchase. Davis has numerous significant thoughts and recommendations which are timely and useful for affordable housing creation.

Effective and Informational
By Robert Olguin
Sam Davis, a professor at the University of California Berkeley and Principal at Sam Davis Architects, has a wealth of knowledge and experience with affordable housing. Not only has his professional career revolved around improving designs of affordable housing, but Davis has also received numerous awards from the American Institute of Architects and Progressive Architecture on several affordable housing projects. Well qualified and informed, Davis uses The Architecture of Affordable Housing to explain the process, restrictions, and to offer suggestions on successful affordable housing projects. As his lens, Davis focuses his attention to numerous case studies in California, a state that he is well versed in its housing legislation and the state with the worst housing affordability in the country.

Davis divides up his work into five chapters that attempt to ground the reader in the history of affordable housing, articulate the efforts made for and against housing, and provide practical applications and examples of successful projects. In the first chapter, Davis presents an effective overview of the development of public housing in the United States. Davis explains the ideas that emerged and responded to the problems with tenements, the subsequent interest in public housing that argued for efficient and economical projects, and the embracement of mass-production and industrialization into housing. The first chapter, then, provides the foundation from which Davis continues to build his argument.

The work progresses in chapters two and three as Davis deals with the challenges and problems architects and developers face when involved with public housing projects. Davis notes that any successful project must have a healthy conversation between the community, developers, architects, and the government. At the conclusion of these two chapters, Davis transitions into the crux of his argument. He expounds his opinions of possibilities to mitigate the bureaucratic restrictions that inevitably get in the way of all affordable housing projects and offers thoughts on how to proceed when there are conflicting opinions on a project.

Davis’ most significant contribution is in chapter four as he discusses the factors that shape affordable housing design. Importantly, Davis expresses how the “American Dream” of owning a single-family house limits the popularity for public housing projects with residents in a community, thus forcing developers and architects to become creative in their arguments for public housing. He concludes this chapter with the failure of public housing substituting a local project, the Acorn housing project in Oakland, California, for the famous St. Louis example Pruitt-Igoe.

This substitution for a local project over a well-known example is part of Davis’s desire to express the importance of architects working with their own community. While the Acorn project is not comparable to Pruitt-Igoe, nevertheless the example demonstrates Davis’s point that good design does not necessarily mean successful projects. In fact, Davis’s last chapter attempts to prove this point as it highlights ten public housing projects that received the highest design awards to reinforce the idea that public housing does not have to be mediocre work.

Overall, The Architecture of Affordable Housing successfully introduces the challenges of public housing, offers insightful commentary about the role of the architect in affordable housing, and highlights several effective and well-designed public housing projects. This work is successful as a local study, but it would be interesting to expand the research base and incorporate further national examples. The work could also have added a chapter focusing on effective ways to work and engage with a community about an affordable housing project. While Davis’s remarks will benefit students and scholars as they are afforded the opinions and viewpoints of an architect, the work is most important for developers and architects as the case studies highlight the many facets of public housing projects.

Becoming Sinners: Christianity and Moral Torment in a Papua New Guinea Society (Ethnographic Studies in Subjectivity), by Joel Robbins

In a world of swift and sweeping cultural transformations, few have seen changes as rapid and dramatic as those experienced by the Urapmin of Papua New Guinea in the last four decades. A remote people never directly "missionized," the Urapmin began in the 1960s to send young men to study with Baptist missionaries living among neighboring communities. By the late 1970s, the Urapmin had undergone a charismatic revival, abandoning their traditional religion for a Christianity intensely focused on human sinfulness and driven by a constant sense of millennial expectation. Exploring the Christian culture of the Urapmin, Joel Robbins shows how its preoccupations provide keys to understanding the nature of cultural change more generally. In so doing, he offers one of the richest available anthropological accounts of Christianity as a lived religion. Theoretically ambitious and engagingly written, his book opens a unique perspective on a Melanesian society, religious experience, and the very nature of rapid cultural change.

Becoming Sinners rocks
By Chris Wig
Too often, and even though they don't mean to, anthropologists describe religion in static terms. After all, it's easier to describe customs and norms than it is to really focus on the lived experience of religious participants. To make a long story short, Becoming Sinners does not do that.

They Called Me Mayer July: Painted Memories of a Jewish Childhood in Poland before the Holocaust, by Mayer Kirshenblatt, Barbara Kirshenbl

Intimate, humorous, and refreshingly candid, this extraordinary work is a remarkable record—in both words and images—of Jewish life in a Polish town before World War II as seen through the eyes of an inquisitive boy. Mayer Kirshenblatt, who was born in 1916 and left Poland for Canada in 1934, taught himself to paint at age 73. Since then, he has made it his mission to remember the world of his childhood in living color, "lest future generations know more about how Jews died than how they lived." This volume presents his lively paintings woven together with a marvelous narrative created from interviews that took place over forty years between Mayer and his daughter, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett. Together, father and daughter draw readers into a lost world—we roam the streets and courtyards of the town of Apt, witness details of daily life, and meet those who lived and worked there: the pregnant hunchback, who stood under the wedding canopy just hours before giving birth; the khayder teacher caught in bed with the drummer's wife; the cobbler's son, who was dressed in white pajamas all his life to fool the angel of death; the corpse that was shaved; and the couple who held a "black wedding" in the cemetery during a cholera epidemic. This moving collaboration—a unique blend of memoir, oral history, and artistic interpretation—is at once a labor of love, a tribute to a distinctive imagination, and a brilliant portrait of life in one Jewish home town.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Memoirs have become a vital genre in Holocaust studies, and while all are important, the uniqueness of some makes them especially important. Mayer Kirshenblatt (b. 1916) grew up in the small Polish town of Apt, a center of rabbinical culture, and in 1934 emigrated to Canada. When he was in his mid-70s his wife and daughter urged him to paint a visual record of the everyday life of his youth. Kirshenblatt's paintings are amazing—a cross between a childlike realism and the embroidered fantasy of memory; they convey a sense of boyhood innocence tinged with grief. The subjects range from people shopping in town stores and chopping wood to celebrations like weddings and the festival of Succoth. Kirshenblatt has an eye for quirky visual and social detail, as in his picture The Kleptomaniac Slipping a Fish Down Her Bosom. These exactingly reproduced paintings are enhanced by Kirshenblatt's equally fresh memoirs, transmitted to his daughter, Barbara (co-editor, The Art of Being Jewish in Modern Times): from jokes that emanated from the women's mikve, or ritual bath, to the mechanics of the local laundry. This collection of pre-Holocaust memories will be a lasting contribution to our understanding of Eastern European Jewish life and culture before its destruction. (Oct.)

From the Inside Flap
“It is best through personal stories that we can grasp the world of our fathers which the Nazis had destroyed. Mayer Kirshenblatt has a unique gift for evocation of the past in his simple and beautiful paintings. Each one tells a story. Together they make up a world.”—Jan T. Gross, author of Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland

“Mayer Kirshenblatt brings to life the small Polish town of Apt prior to 1934. We see before our eyes the world of Polish Jewry, from the well-dressed kleptomaniac who steals live fish to Kirshenblatt's mother in her kitchen. His paintings are simple, direct, often witty, and always moving. A book to buy, a book to share.”—Sander L. Gilman, author of Multiculturalism and the Jews

“As if memory itself had come and lifted up his brush, Mayer Kirshenblatt evokes every aspect of his childhood in a tender, beautiful series of paintings. The accompanying narrative mirrors the qualities of his art: a remarkable spontaneity and transparency permits the precious illusion that Apt, Poland, lives again in scenes of birth and death, recreations of kitchens and fire stations and farms, inhabited by a full and lively cast of butchers, milkmaids, prostitutes, musicians, all so lovingly and creatively brought to life. It is a magician's trick, a joyous and deeply satisfying immersion in the lost world of prewar Poland Jewry."—Ann Kirschner, author of Sala’s Gift: My Mother’s Holocaust Story

Disappointed
By Katy Texas
The picture on the cover of the book made me think that there were many pictures such as that. No, there were'n't many pictures and the print of was very small. I found it difficult to read. Needed a magnifying glass. I read all of my books on my Kindle so this was not good for me. Sorry, but this must be returned.

The Shtetl - You Are There
By S. J. J. Freeman
This book is a treasure! It provides reminiscences in text and in paintings of a Polish Jewish shtetl, Apatow or, as the Jews called it, Apt. Like Grandma Moses, Kirshenblatt began painting late in life and, like her, has produced primitive, lively, intimate illustrations of his remembered world. The text is equally intimate describing the people, their nicknames, and their lives. Anyone interested in furthering his or her knowledge of the shtetl, as told by one of its last living inhabitants, must read this book.

They Call Me Meyer July
By Emerita
A beautiful book with glorious art, but best of all, the total recall of the author of his childhood town in Poland, before the World War, reproduces, with maps and streets and fascinating detail, a vanished world.

The book was in very good condition, as advertised by the bookseller.

The Naturalness of Religious Ideas: A Cognitive Theory of Religion, by Pascal Boyer

Why do people have religious ideas? And why thosereligious ideas? The main theme of Pascal Boyer's work is that important aspects of religious representations are constrained by universal properties of the human mind-brain. Experimental results from developmental psychology, he says, can explain why certain religious representations are more likely to be acquired, stored, and transmitted by human minds. Considering these universal constraints, Boyer proposes an exciting new answer to the question of why similar religious representations are found in so many different cultures. His work will be widely discussed by cultural anthropologists, psychologists, and students of religion, history, and philosophy.

Opaque and turgid.
By David Marshall
Using George Orwell's old rule, let me see if I can translate some of Boyer's argument here into single-syllable words:

"As man comes from apes, he learns to see men's souls well. If you know man, you live: if not, you may die. Since to see men helps us live, we learn to see a Man in the Sky as well. And so come gods."

I learned less in forty pages of this book than four pages of William James, but suffered more in four pages than in 400 pages of James. Why do some "social scientists" seem to think they will be paid by the density of their language rather than clarity and fedundity of thought? An excellent reference text for Scrabble words, though.

Of course Boyer dismisses without thought the suggestion that religion might have a basis in any sort of evidence:

"I chose to ignore . . the theolgoical ecumenical approach . . . (which) holds that the assumptions on which many religious systems converge are in fact divinely inspired truths . . . " because he would rather "focus on more directly testable hypothesis."

Do I detech a wink and a nudge here? Of course, if you ignore the possibility of revelation, religioius ideas will appear natural by definition. But on what grounds do we reject a theory merely because the evidence for it may be indirect?

Anyway, I don't think you lose anything much by reading Boyer's more popular Religion Explained instead. It's not only far more readable, it's also one heck of a lot cheaper. I think he's largely mistaken there, too, but at least he is trying in that book to communicate with the reader.

Letters of Wallace Stevens, by Wallace Stevens

Long unavailable, now in paperback for the first time, these are the brilliant, subtle, illuminating letters of one of the great poets of the twentieth century. Stevens's famous criterion for poetry—"It should give pleasure"—informed his epistolary aesthetic as well; these letters stimulate one's appetite for poetry as they valorize the imagination and the senses. They also offer fascinating glimpses of Stevens as family man, insurance executive, connoisseur, and friend.

FROM THE BOOK:"Next to the passion flower I love fuchsias, and no kidding. . . . Down among the Pennsylvania Germans there was a race of young men . . . who carved willow fans. These men would take a bit of willow stick about a foot long, peel it and with nothing more than a jackknife carve it into something that looked like a souvenir of Queen Anne's lingerie. The trouble that someone took to invent fuchsias makes me think of these willow fans. However it is a dark and dreary day today and who am I to be frivolous under such circumstances."—from a letter to Wilson Taylor, August 20, 1947

An author's letters are often more revealing than their prose, or, in Stevens's case, their poetry, and are necessary study for a fuller understanding of the artist. In addition to numerous letters, this also includes entries from Stevens's journal and photos. This first paperback edition of the 1966 original contains a new foreword by poet/scholar Richard Howard.

Essential
By Stephen Mitchell
For anyone interested in poetry, LETTERS OF WALLACE STEVENS should be essential reading. Along with Rilke's letters, it is the most fascinating book of correspondence by a twentieth-century writer: profound, witty, meticulous, at times funny, at times lyrical, and even in the duller letters written in a prose that is deliciously crisp and clear. It contains many explications of Stevens' own poems, important not only for understanding the poems but also as a way into the sometimes extremely strange imagination of one of our greatest poets.

These are also the letters of a man of integrity (a rare quality among poets, among human beings), and integrity always rejoices the heart. As a brief example, here are two statements Stevens made about his attitude toward poetry: "I write poetry because it is part of my piety: because, for me, it is the good of life, and I don't intend to lift a finger to advance my interest, because I don't want to think of poetry that way." "My state of mind about poetry makes me very susceptible and that is a danger in the sense that it would be so easy for me to pick up on something unconsciously. In order not to run that danger I don't read other people's poetry at all."

I have read this book at least ten times, and I now keep it at my bedside.

fascinating letters and a indispensible reference
By A Customer
Not only are these letters to Harriet Monroe, William Carlos Williams, Allen Tate, Donald Hall, Robert Frost (and many others) fascinating and entertaining, but the comprehensive index makes it possible to find Stevens' own comments about and explanations of individual poems--for instance, his favorite poem was "The Emperor of Ice Cream"--and details about the circumstances in which they were composed. Not only does Stevens outline his evolving theory of poetry, he also expresses his opinions about contemporary art, music and more.
Readers that enjoy literary correspondence should also see One Art (the letters of Elizabeth Bishop).

These are not the letters of Keats
By Shalom Freedman
If there is one poet who I think Stevens is most comparable to it is Keats. It has to do with their great musical quality, the richness of vocabulary and language, polyphonic beauty in their long lines. Keats' letters are among the greatest in the language and help define not only his own poetic practice, but make a real contribution to literary theory in general. Stevens' letters do illuminate various aspects of his art but they seem to me to be on a wholly different level entirely from the poetry. The banker- businessman- husband is a much more pedestrian soul than the poet. The Letters are of great value to any student or scholar of Stevens, but they are not on the literary level of his great poetry.

He was however or so I have the impression of from these letters a devoted father to his daughter. This at least gives a sense that the value of his life was not only in the great poetry he created.
