Many Middle Passages: Forced Migration and the Making of the Modern WorldFrom University of California Press

This groundbreaking book presents a global perspective on the history of forced migration over three centuries and illuminates the centrality of these vast movements of people in the making of the modern world. Highly original essays from renowned international scholars trace the history of slaves, indentured servants, transported convicts, bonded soldiers, trafficked women, and coolie and Kanaka labor across the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. They depict the cruelty of the captivity, torture, terror, and death involved in the shipping of human cargo over the waterways of the world, which continues unabated to this day. At the same time, these essays highlight the forms of resistance and cultural creativity that have emerged from this violent history. Together, the essays accomplish what no single author could provide: a truly global context for understanding the experience of men, women, and children forced into the violent and alienating experience of bonded labor in a strange new world. This pioneering volume also begins to chart a new role of the sea as a key site where history is made.

Slavery then and now
By janetruth
This excellent collection of essays more than lives up to its "." Its scope goes beyond the 3 centuries of the trans-Atlantic slave trade: it includes essays on slave trade in the South Pacific; forced labor and migration of Chinese, Indian and Irish people, as well as prisoners and sailors; slavery today; and links these histories of forced labor to the unfolding "needs" of global capitalism and the world that has emerged.

Many Middle Passages
By Isamu Noguchi
Hello
When I am reading "Moby Dick" by H.Merville and "The Capital" by K.Marx,I encounter this book and rejoice. Between these two big books in 19th cencury,it seems to me,this book appears very naturally alongside the course of world history. I am a Japanese translator. And When I encountered American word "abolutionist" a few decades ago, I began to read a American history by David Brion Davis, and learned about American Slavery. I rejoice partly because I find the general name of Japanese over-sea sex-slave of 19th or 20th cencuries,karayuki-san in this book.
Flankly speaking I want to read a English book about yellow peril. If it appeared, I want to translate it into Japanese.

Memories of State: Politics, History, and Collective Identity in Modern Iraq, by Eric Davis

Despite being securely entrenched in power and having suppressed all political opposition, the Ba'thist regime that ruled Iraq from 1968 to 2003 still felt the need to engage in a massive rewriting of the nation's history and cultural heritage—in both its high and popular forms. As this book makes clear, the regime's effort to restructure understandings of the past was an attempt to expunge a powerful tendency in the Iraqi nationalist movement that advocated cultural pluralism, political participation, and social justice. Based on interviews with Iraqi intellectuals under the regime of Saddam Husayn, and with Iraqi expatriates and on publications from Iraq both before and during Ba'thist rule, Memories of State is an eye-opening look at one of the most important and misunderstood countries in the Middle East. This timely study also asks what the possibilities are for promoting civil society and a transition to democratic rule in post-Ba'thist Iraq.

"Eric Davis's book is a truly impressive tour de force of the cultural history of modern Iraq and the political struggles over the appropriation of national culture and memory. It is based not only on meticulous and detailed research, but also a thorough familiarity and sympathy with Iraqi society. Memories of State
By Michael Rubin
In a publishing atmosphere saturated by instant Iraq experts, Rutgers University political scientist Davis presents a rare work of careful scholarship. Memories of State examines the intellectual tyranny of the Baath in Iraq, tracing its efforts to undue the cultural pluralism which once characterized Iraqi society.

Davis begins by describing how Ottoman reform, Iranian constitutionalism, and nascent Arab nationalism combined to shape an Iraqi intelligentsia. With time--and especially after independence--the Arab nationalist trend gained strength. Intellectual Iraq was not homogenous, though. While Shi'ite intellectual life was vibrant, it oriented itself more around the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala and toward Iran than to the nascent state.

While it would be an exaggeration to call Iraqi political culture tolerant, its early years were marked by cultural pluralism. Not only Muslims but also Jews and Christians participated in state and society. This political culture began to fracture in the 1930s. By allying themselves with the military, which they saw as a force to impose reform, Iraqi progressives opened a Pandora's box of coups and instability. Pan-Arabists gained strength in the years prior to World War II, and cultural pluralism deteriorated. Nazi propaganda permeated society. The Jewish community never recovered after the 1940 farhud (pogrom) in Baghdad.

While minority communities became detached from the Iraqi mainstream, there was still dynamic political debate. Davis traces the development of the war of ideas between Arab nationalists and communists. Using a wide variety of Arabic sources drawn from field research in Iraqi archives and libraries, Davis traces the newspapers and books that influenced society and politics. He reaches into the roots of intellectual life at the time, even detailing specific coffeehouses where writers would discuss and debate their ideas.

While the 1958 revolution sparked political and civic activity, the 1968 Baathist coup curtailed it. The intellectual chill was not instantaneous, though. Davis examines how the Baathist regime moved to co-opt Iraq's intelligentsia and brainwash its youth. He surveys books, newspapers, literary journals, and even graphic art to show how the Iraqi regime sought to promote Sunni Arab nationalism. A wide array of photographs of everything from models at Iraqi fashion shows to Saddam's monumental architecture help illustrate Davis' arguments.

The chapter on "Memories of State and the Arts of Resistance," is particularly strong. In it, Davis details the subtle academic censorship exerted by the Ministry of Culture. Baathist bureaucrats okayed the publication of lackluster theses on esoteric topics but refused to print award-winning anthropological studies of Iraqi tribes, for these latter acknowledged a diversity that the Baath party did not wish to recognize. Iraq's once rich poetic tradition narrowed into a celebration of Arab nationalism. The survey of Iraqi newspaper content in the 1990s shows how stilted Iraq's once rich discourse had become.

While Memories of State will be of lasting value to academics and historians wishing to understand the evolution and deterioration of Iraq's intelligentsia, its dense academic prose undercuts its utility. Readers are saddled with long asides about contrasting theories of "historical memory," "Gramscian notions of hegemony," and other examples of unnecessary obfuscation.

In the Course of a Lifetime: Tracing Religious Belief, Practice, and Change, by Michele Dillon, Paul Wink

In the Course of a Lifetime provides an unprecedented portrait of the dynamic role religion plays in the everyday experiences of Americans over the course of their lives. The book draws from a unique sixty-year-long study of close to two hundred mostly Protestant and Catholic men and women who were born in the 1920s and interviewed in adolescence, and again in the 1950s, 1970s, 1980s, and late 1990s. Woven throughout with rich, intimate life stories, the book presents and analyzes a wide range of data from this study on the participants' religious and spiritual journeys. A testament to the vibrancy of religion in the United States, In the Course of a Lifetime provides an illuminating and sometimes surprising perspective on how individual lives have intersected with cultural change throughout the decades of the twentieth century.

From the Inside Flap
"Dillon and Wink bring their combination of sociological and psychological perspectives to this landmark study, making possible a fascinating series of individual portraits—and a fresh new window on how life and faith have changed over the last century."—Nancy T. Ammerman, author of Pillars of Faith: American Congregations and their Partners, Building Traditions, Building Communities

"The rich findings in this landmark volume challenge many assumptions about religion and the life course while documenting the multiple ways, both direct and subtle, that faith relates to personality, social attitudes, community involvement, psychological well-being, and health. This is social science at its best - empirically rigorous and theoretically sophisticated for sure, but also deeply humane in its ability to convey so clearly the individual voices of the research participants, as they struggle to make sense of their lives in a rapidly changing world."—Dan P. McAdams, author of The Redemptive Self: Stories Americans Live By

The Velvet Glove: Paternalism and Conflict in Gender, Class, and Race Relations, by Mary R. Jackman

This landmark study analyzes and compares the ideologies that develop among unequal social groups. Mary Jackman employs a unique national survey to investigate all three of the most prominent relations of inequality in the United States: gender, class, and race. Where other scholars have emphasized conflict as the emblem of intergroup oppression, Jackman proposes a theory in which both dominant and subordinate groups maneuver to avoid open hostility as they strive to control resources within the confines of their mutual relationship.

Hostility, Jackman points out, creates resistance in a relationship. Dominant groups therefore try to preempt the use of force by following a velvet-glove strategy of "sweet persuasion." They are drawn especially to the ideological mold of paternalism, in which the coercion of subordinates is grounded in love rather than hate. Dominant-group members pronounce authoritatively on the needs and welfare of all and then profess to "provide" for those needs. Love, affection, and praise are offered to subordinates on strict condition that they comply with the terms of the unequal relationship. Whether in the home or in the arena of class or race relations, paternalism wraps control and authority in an ideological cocoon in which discriminatory actions are defined as benevolent and affection is made contingent on compliance.

Jackman's emphasis on the practice of coercive love in race, class, and gender relations is sure to generate controversy and further research. Sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, and anyone interested in group ideology will find here a provocative challenge to conventional views.

Profound and intriguing...
By N. WALLS
By decoupling discrimination from hostility, Jackman persuasively demonstrates how paternalism plays a significant role in maintaining inequality in long-term, interdependent relationships between social groups. (She does NOT argue that paternalism plays a role in ALL intergroup relationships and is very clear to delineate the specific types of intergroup dynamics and histories that give rise to paternalistic ideologies as the primary justification/mechanism for maintaining social stratification.) Her work -- although more sociological, than social psychological -- bolsters and supports the modern prejudice research done by other scholars in the areas of race (Gaertner & Dovidio, Katz & Hass, McConahay), gender (Glick & Fiske, Swim, Tougas and colleagues) and sexual orientation (Morrison & Morrison). This work will -- no doubt -- be controversial, especially among those who wish to deny the ongoing presence of inequality in society and who will seek to argue that it is just another political ploy by liberal to further a leftist agenda. However, Jackman methodically supports her argument with empirical research and has carefully outlined the various components of her argument. A must read for any scholar interested in social stratification, gender, race & ethnicity or sexuality.

A Must Read for Students of Social Stratification
By NoCreaseDeQuis
In this thoughtful piece, Jackman turns conventional wisdom regarding inequality on its head. The work presents a truly provocative challenge to liberal ideology and traditional understandings of race, class and gender relations. Perhaps paternalistic efforts to reduce inequality serve to perpetuate the status quo rather than increase equality between groups. A must read for students of social stratification and those interested in brining about the reduction of inequality.

Great Book!
By Michael K
Great read! In many group interactions, the subordinate receives affection if they comply with code of behavior the dominant group wants them to follow. This can be applied to race, class and gender and the the book does a good job at investigated each one of these socially constructed elements of our society.

Kudos to Professor Jackman!

Gardens and Ghettos: The Art of Jewish Life in ItalyFrom University of California Press

Jews arrived in the Republic of Rome some time in the second or first century B.C.E. They soon formed their own community which absorbed Roman cultural forms but was able to maintain its identity and integrity. For more than twenty centuries, the Italian peninsula has been home to the heirs of this ancient minority community, whose culture is a blend of traditional Jewish content with Roman, then Italian cultural forms.

Gardens and Ghettos: The Art of Jewish Life in Italy is the title of an exhibition curated by Vivian B. Mann and Emily Braun for The Jewish Museum, New York (September 1989-January 1990), an exhibition that explores the extraordinarily rich artistic legacy of Italian Jewry. This book, like the exhibition itself, focuses on four time periods: the Empire, the Era of the City States (1300-1550), the Era of the Ghettos (1550-1750), and the period since the Risorgimento. Artifacts and architecture are generously represented along with fine arts. Essays by prominent scholars introduce us to the historical and cultural context of a splendid array of works, from ancient Roman architectural fragments and gold glass to illuminated manuscripts and printed books from the Renaissance, baroque ceremonial textiles and silver, and paintings, graphics, and sculpture of the modern era. The many illustrations illuminate the art and life of a minority community in dynamic tension with dominant society and show the vibrant, ongoing contribution by Jews to the arts of Italy.

A mild treasure
By Curious
Beautifully illustrated and rather detailed for the variety of objects to be reviewed. The articles are scholarly, but are well-paced and appear to be as long as needed.
The only part that is somewhat problematic would be that the catalog has text only for the majority of the exhibits and would have benefited by at least a thumbprint picture of the exhibits not otherwise illustrated in the text.

Beautiful art, interesting history. I have no professional interest in art or history, so I couldn't say how a professor or art history buff would like it. But, it brought to life many of the people who lived and created art throughout many centuries, binding my heart and sould to theirs. Wonderful book!

Mediterranean: A Cultural Landscape, by Predrag Matvejevic

Predrag Matvejevic's writing glints and eddies as if subject to the same winds and currents that stir his Mediterranean. "Crickets often crop up in accounts of Mediterranean moods," we read. "The sound or possibly song of the cricket does not disturb insomnia—I know from experience—on summer nights when waking is easier than sleeping and the spirits keep watch and almost seem to merge over the Mediterranean." In the space of a few pages we encounter knots, ballast, voyages, swimming, diving, shipwrecks, burial at sea, sponge and coral gathering, rivers, and the distribution of olive, fig, and agave. The author has stories to tell about each topic and freely mingles the observations and discoveries of fellow travelers, ancient and contemporary, with his own, creating a powerful narrative tide.

The book is divided into three sections: "Breviary," "Maps," and "Glossary." "Breviary" catalogs the sights, smells, sounds, and features common to the many peoples who share the Mediterranean—Jews, Arabs, Copts, Berbers, Turks, Syrians, Greeks, Romans (and Italians), Spaniards (and Catalonians), the French, Dalmatians, Albanians, Bulgarians, Romanians, even Russians. "Maps" retraces the same itinerary through documents up to the seventeenth century that represent the Mediterranean; "Glossary" deals with linguistic diversity and history. The brilliant variety of details and the verve with which they are conveyed will appeal to active and armchair travelers alike.

With this portrait of a place and its civilizations, Matvejevic joins a cohort of writers that includes Claudio Magris (Danube), Angelo Maria Ripellino (Magic Prague), and Neal Ascherson (Black Sea)—authors who have created a literary genre all their own, at once personal and objective, imaginative and erudite. Although, as Matvejevic says, "we do not discover the sea ourselves, nor do we view it exclusively through our own eyes," this Mediterranean is joyously his, and it becomes ours as well.

"Neither exclusively narrative history nor strictly economic analysis, neither sociological interpretation nor literary explication alone, Matvejevic's scholarly encyclopedia of all things Mediterranean is all of these and more." -- Dallas Morning News

Poetry on the shores of the dark-wine sea
By Amore Roberto
For a few years "Mediterranean. A Cultural Landscape" has been one of the most popular book here in Europe. One of the most cited and the most praised.

There are wonderful travel related books about the Mediterranean.

Besides the many famous, I remember with gratitude the excellent "Mediterranean. Portrait of a Sea" by Ernle Bradford, possibly the best book ever written on this argument - and the most evocative, true poetry in prose, "On a Voiceless Shore - Byron in Greece" by Stephen Minta with the priceless metaphor that begins: "There is a frontier in Europe, marked on few maps.... It runs eastward from Galicia in northwester Spain, turns south ..., ...takes a fringe in coastal France...then runs down the coast of old Yugoslavia into Albania and Greece. This is that marks the northern limits of the olive tree..."

What about this book?

Did I enjoy the work of Matvejevic? Well... actually I'm still asking myself the question.

And the answer is not easy.

I'd probably re-read with pleasure, yes, and I would recommend it to friends, yes.

Undeniably this is a book that stimulates imagination and has the ability to evoke, but...

But the "dish" is sometimes a bit too elaborate, descriptions most of the time a bit too synthetic to enjoy at leisure and also exposition is - possibly willingly (in the style of ancient Latin "saturae") - haphazard.

Like with an elaborate dish by nouvelle cuisine, here everything looks, smells and tastes good... you are captured by endless variations of colors and forms, but in the end you feel frustrated by scarcity and with a distressing sense of hunger.

Its main virtue consists in being a successful effort to evoke a world almost totally disappeared, stressing on the points of contact between the many peoples and cultures living on its shores (the Latin, Slav, Greek, Turkish, Jewish and Arabic) more than on the already over-stressed differences.

On the other hand, if you do not know already the background, it will be difficult to follow, perceive and appreciate the argument. Because most of the book is rotating on a endless variation of the same themes, presented under different points of view, and often in a most rarefied poetic dimension.

This happens specially in the first of the three parts in which the book is divided ("Breviary" - the other two are "Maps" and "Glossary") while in the other two this impression is less vivid.

Anyway most of the world here presented as still existing, was already totally vanished by the 1960s' and since then it has been transferred to the realm of mythical utopia, that blunders edges and fades true colors. But, of course, the evocative and poetic dimension is overwhelming.

What Matvejevic seems to ignore completely is the presence on its shores of the British (since at least 1704), as well as the fascination that our sea commanded since the XVIII century on German and Northern People (Goethe, Winkelmann, Byron, the British enclave in Florence... but what to say of the Russians in the Cote d'Azure?), a distinct aesthetic sensibility that greatly contributed to shape the poetic and sentimental image of our sea. And what about the chaotic multicultural cities of early XX century: Forster's and Kavafis' Alexandria, just to name one (but also Salonika, Istambul, Triest,...)?

This is possibly the greatest "sin" of this lay breviary.

Mediterranean: A Cultural Landscape
By Vasja Bratina
The book Mediterranean: A Cultural Landscape represents global, objective and unburdened approach to topics of our civilizaton's cradle. Namely the author managed to write about so complex and multiculturaly entwined subjects on a certain way that is acceptable to and appreciated by all mediterranean nations and religions and by all who are interested in overall hystorical and cultural development of this part of the world . The Matvejevic story about Mediterranean is far from being scientificaly cold and dull, as he is intertwining in it a lot of his own observations, which are witty, sparkling and deep at the same time. In the same sense his approach isn't sticking to cronological or geographical order, but wise comparing of different eras, cultures, civilizations, nations and religions of this "sea, surrounded by land". It is the book that unites. The medieval form of breviary, that the writer is using, is giving the treated topics some special nobleness that is emphasized by poetical language which is fluctuating like the Mediterranean sea.
