The California Deserts

Bruce Pavlik has written and produced an extremely useful, informative, well written and well done book with "The California Deserts: An Ecological Rediscovery". Anyone who treasures these wonderful deserts with treks in to them will love this book; it is obviously written by a scholar and a man who grew up in and loves the California deserts.

Comprehensive, Current & Useful

This is the type of book we have all been waiting for - holistic, comprehensive, current and easy to follow. It is not for those who substitute oil for knowledge riding their ATVs, but rather those who walk the land and want to get to know the desert first-hand. What are the climate, soils, hydrology, metabolism, light, perturbations and cycles that make up the Mojave & adjacent deserts within California? Find it here. Deserts are areas where evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation by a factor of 6 to 10. It's not what you get (precipitation), but what you keep (effective moisture), that counts. Moisture is a dominant factor, but so many other things control what deserts are and how we see them.

This is about seeing - what are the different types of metabolism plants and animals use to deal with extreme aridity and heat? This provides answers with easy to understand illustrations. What is desert pavement and how does it form? Find solutions and processes here. What are the ecotones (boundaries) between humid & arid ecosystems and how are they defined? This is a dynamic process book, not a "look-it-up-and-forget-it book".

When I stand on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and look eastward into the Great Basin this book gives me a sense of understanding of colors, cryptograms, herbs, shrubs & trees. Soil fungi are important nutrient cyclers in desert soils. Ride an ATV over "barren" sand and you wipe out soils and plants for many years to come. What do soil fungi look like? Find it here. Soil fungi bacteria relationships are important in all soils and especially in desert soils.

What is the role and niche of desert fish? How long have they been around (a long time). How do dunes form and what is the source of the sand that makes up dunes? How often does it snow in the desert? How do human communities affect desert ecosystems and are these activities sustainable? Human communities may flourish for a short time by spending the natural capital stored over the last 10,000 years, but they cannot be sustained.

This book comes through with colors, viewsheds, airsheds, plants, animals and outside influences. It gives you insight into fire, flood, wind, heat, cold and travel. This is a valuable addition to my desert bookshelf. I will look at all deserts (Atacama, Karakum, Antarctic, Patagonia, Sonora, Mojave, Chihuaua, Talkla Makan, as well as the Sahara in a new light.

This less-than-an-amateurish production renders the work almost unreadable. I had to check out the original edition from the library and identify all the quotations--which are a lot--myself.

The book points out that religion's role remains understudied and undertheorized as an element in debates about globalization, and it raises questions about how and why certain forms of religious practice and intersubjectivity succeed as they cross national and cultural boundaries. This book explores the role of native place associations in the development of modern Chinese urban society and the role of native-place identity in the development of urban nationalism. From the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, sojourners from other provinces dominated the population of Shanghai and other expanding commercial Chinese cities. These immigrants formed native place associations beginning in the imperial period and persisting into the mid-twentieth century. Goodman examines the modernization of these associations and argues that under weak urban government, native place sentiment and organization flourished and had a profound effect on city life, social order and urban and national identity.

About the Author
Erwin G. Gudde, at his death in 1969, was an emeritus member of the University of California faculty. William Bright is Professor Adjoint in Linguistics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and author of numerous books including A Coyote Reader (California, 1993). He supplied a new foreword plus maps and itinerary for the Fourth Edition of Up and Down in California in 1860-1864: The Journal of William H. Brewer (California, 2003).

4th Edition and 40th anniversary edition are the same!

I bought the 40th Anniversary Edition of "California Place Names" because I had to find out what difference there was between it and the 4th edition. There is no difference! They are exactly the same books with the same pagination and the same copyright date of 1998 (with the same 1st paperback year of 2004). The verso information is the exact same (down to the same ISBN number) inside the two books.

The only differences are the covers: the 40th anniversary edition has the illustration of a mountain on it and the 4th Edition has the orange "old timey" map on it. As well, the 40th anniversary edition has "Revised and Expanded by William Bright" on the cover, but inside on the title page it says "Revised and Enlarged by William Bright"---which is the same wording on the 4th edition cover and title page.

With a description that states "This anniversary edition concentrates on the [blah blah blah]" it's hard not think that the publishers are trying to mislead consumers into thinking this is different in some way from the 4th edition. It is not in any way different on the inside, only the outside. I don't know if the 4th edition is being "replaced" by the 40th anniversary edition, but anyone with a 4th edition should be aware nothing has changed with this "new" edition (which is not a 5th edition as Amazon's info states).

Other than that, this a great reference book!

Not the Real Deal--UC Press Should be Ashamed!

Do yourself a favor and buy a nice copy of the 3d edition of 1969. It doesn't list everything, e.g. no entry for "Sinkyone," for the understandable reason that in 1969 the Sinkyone was not yet a designated wilderness area. But the wealth of historical and biographical detail is simply astonishing. Now, this edition does list the Sinkyone, but the entry itself, like most I've looked at in this book, is--well, paltry. Not even a mention of location (the Sinkyone straddles coastal Mendocino & Humboldt counties). Worse, a huge amount of entries are just left out--e.g. if you didn't have access to the Third, you'd never know that Simmons Peak is in Yosemite NP and was named after a Doctor Simmons of Sacramento. Do yourself a favor and instead of this book, buy a beer or lollipop and save the lace.

Reyner Banham (1922-1988) was Sheldon H. Solow Professor of the History of Architecture at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and Professor of Art History at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Among his many books are A Critic Writes (California, 1996) and Theory and Design in the First Machine Age (1961). Anthony Vidler is Professor and Chair of Art History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His most recent book is Warped Space: Art, Architecture, and Anxiety in Modern Culture (2000).

Even though Banham's book was written in the early '70's, it remains a cogent view of a metropolis that has changed yet remained the same. Architecture is but a backdrop to Banham's larger point about the inter-relationship of people to the natural and built environments. The perspective of 35 years only sharpens the observations made by the insightful author.
