Great Small Needlepoint Projects in a Fun but Traditional Style

Stitchers like to do small projects. But finding good designs for them at an affordable price can be hard. This wonderful book by Jennifer Berman and Carole Lazarus has lots of them to suit almost every taste.
Small projects are wonderful, they fit easily in your bag, get stitched quickly (so you have a feeling of accomplishment) and can bring beauty into every part of your home. The book covers all kinds of needlepoint objects from to usual pictures, pillows and pincushions (check out the lace pincushion) to bookmarks, jewelry case and a stuffed frog which would make a great frameweight.

The projects all are tent stitch, with occasional stem stitch outlines for definition. The charts are large, clear and easy-to-read.

One of the delights of a Glorafilia book is the text. Berman and Lazarus are always full of delightful insights into the objects which inspire their work. With an overall theme of collections, you may even find yourself deciding to begin collecting tartanware or majorca.

With this book and some canvas, you can have plenty of small projects and never get tired or bored.

This is a marvelous book for the needlepointer who likes to make small projects.
The patterns are easy to follow. I am very partial to the needlepoint bookmark.
I have made three of them for gifts...they are exquisite.

These projects are so sweet

Jennifer Berman and Carole Lazarus started up a needlework shop in London in 1975 called "Glorafilia" and they were a hit. They began designing and published books and needlepoint kits, many based on paintings or rugs from around the world. Please also see:

What's great about their work is that these are not strictly needlepoint designs but are counted stitch designs and thus also easily cross stitched, my preferred technique. I have many needlepoint books that I use to cross stitch and am so happy with a project I worked on 16-count aida with one strand of pearl cotton, the cover of:
Needlepoint Designs from Oriental Rugs. I get many compliments on it.

See the Images I have uploaded above. The front and back cover show 4 of the 16 projects and I have also included the cover blue-and-white pattern which is made into a different pillow. The clear graph shows how easy it is to follow and with only 5 different shades of blue plus white, even beginners could pick it up. The stitch count is 106 x 106. The suggested fabric count is 14 stitches per inch so that makes it 12 inches square. I plan to make this only smaller so that it is truly miniature, maybe using linen and cross-stitching over 1 thread. A 3-inch by 3-inch top would make a cut pincushion.

This is a smallish book with only 96 pages but it is interesting reading and the authors clearly love their craft.

Boiardo's long poetic account of the chivalric and magical adventures of the knight Orlando (Roland) stands at a crucial juncture between the chansons de geste and medieval Romance and the great Renaissance epics such as Ariosto's Orlando Furioso and Spenser's Faerie Queene. The publisher has done a service to both the scholar and the serious reader, providing a handsome bilingual edition of the Orlando Innamorato that features the first complete translation in English. While not always literal, translator Ross's efforts are vigorous, capturing much of the spirit of the original. He also includes a cogent introductory essay on Boiardo and his work.

A treasure trove

For those who are not satisfied with portraits of Ives as seen through the eyes and interpretations of others—hardly the means to discover the day-to-day insights that can come only from personal contact—this collection of letters (from amongst many more) provides the next best thing. This glimpse into Ives's world cannot be experienced in any other way. Containing countless letters by Ives himself, together with those of others as they corresponded with him, not only is the larger person on display, but also freely shared with us in ways that no amount of commentary can. Ives emerges as a genuine, caring, kind, reluctant to hurt anyone's feelings or well being, extremely generous, sensitive, humorous, self-effacing, courageous in the face of illness and increasing frailty, and always prolific in thought and deed. And despite the omission of some letters left for others to reveal—the very documents that helped to solve some of the mysteries, and that really should never have been mysteries at all—Ives speaks directly to us. For those who were raised on Ives before the dark age of revisionism raised its ugly head, this wonderful man and his music more than lives up to our original impressions. A beautiful and moving assemblage of materials, this book is a treasure trove.

Erwin G. Gudde, at his death in 1969, was an emeritus member of the University of California faculty. William Bright is Professor Adjoint in Linguistics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and author of numerous books including A Coyote Reader (California, 1993). He supplied a new foreword plus maps and itinerary for the Fourth Edition of Up and Down in California in 1860-1864: The Journal of William H. Brewer (California, 2003).

4th Edition and 40th anniversary edition are the same!

I bought the 40th Anniversary Edition of "California Place Names" because I had to find out what difference there was between it and the 4th edition. There is no difference! They are exactly the same books with the same pagination and the same copyright date of 1998 (with the same 1st paperback year of 2004). The verso information is the exact same (down to the same ISBN number) inside the two books.

The only differences are the covers: the 40th anniversary edition has the illustration of a mountain on it and the 4th Edition has the orange "old timey" map on it. As well, the 40th anniversary edition has "Revised and Expanded by William Bright" on the cover, but inside on the title page it says "Revised and Enlarged by William Bright"---which is the same wording on the 4th edition cover and title page.

With a description that states "This anniversary edition concentrates on the [blah blah blah]" it's hard not think that the publishers are trying to mislead consumers into thinking this is different in some way from the 4th edition. It is not in any way different on the inside, only the outside. I don't know if the 4th edition is being "replaced" by the 40th anniversary edition, but anyone with a 4th edition should be aware nothing has changed with this "new" edition (which is not a 5th edition as Amazon's info states).

Other than that, this a great reference book!

Not the Real Deal--UC Press Should be Ashamed!

Do yourself a favor and buy a nice copy of the 3d edition of 1969. It doesn't list everything, e.g. no entry for "Sinkyone," for the understandable reason that in 1969 the Sinkyone was not yet a designated wilderness area. But the wealth of historical and biographical detail is simply astonishing. Now, this edition does list the Sinkyone, but the entry itself, like most I've looked at in this book, is--well, paltry. Not even a mention of location (the Sinkyone straddles coastal Mendocino & Humboldt counties). Worse, a huge amount of entries are just left out--e.g. if you didn't have access to the Third, you'd never know that Simmons Peak is in Yosemite NP and was named after a Doctor Simmons of Sacramento. Do yourself a favor and instead of this book, buy a beer or lollipop and save the lace.
