A treasure trove

For those who are not satisfied with portraits of Ives as seen through the eyes and interpretations of others—hardly the means to discover the day-to-day insights that can come only from personal contact—this collection of letters (from amongst many more) provides the next best thing. This glimpse into Ives's world cannot be experienced in any other way. Containing countless letters by Ives himself, together with those of others as they corresponded with him, not only is the larger person on display, but also freely shared with us in ways that no amount of commentary can. Ives emerges as a genuine, caring, kind, reluctant to hurt anyone's feelings or well being, extremely generous, sensitive, humorous, self-effacing, courageous in the face of illness and increasing frailty, and always prolific in thought and deed. And despite the omission of some letters left for others to reveal—the very documents that helped to solve some of the mysteries, and that really should never have been mysteries at all—Ives speaks directly to us. For those who were raised on Ives before the dark age of revisionism raised its ugly head, this wonderful man and his music more than lives up to our original impressions. A beautiful and moving assemblage of materials, this book is a treasure trove.

About the Author
Erwin G. Gudde, at his death in 1969, was an emeritus member of the University of California faculty. William Bright is Professor Adjoint in Linguistics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and author of numerous books including A Coyote Reader (California, 1993). He supplied a new foreword plus maps and itinerary for the Fourth Edition of Up and Down in California in 1860-1864: The Journal of William H. Brewer (California, 2003).

4th Edition and 40th anniversary edition are the same!

I bought the 40th Anniversary Edition of "California Place Names" because I had to find out what difference there was between it and the 4th edition. There is no difference! They are exactly the same books with the same pagination and the same copyright date of 1998 (with the same 1st paperback year of 2004). The verso information is the exact same (down to the same ISBN number) inside the two books.

The only differences are the covers: the 40th anniversary edition has the illustration of a mountain on it and the 4th Edition has the orange "old timey" map on it. As well, the 40th anniversary edition has "Revised and Expanded by William Bright" on the cover, but inside on the title page it says "Revised and Enlarged by William Bright"---which is the same wording on the 4th edition cover and title page.

With a description that states "This anniversary edition concentrates on the [blah blah blah]" it's hard not think that the publishers are trying to mislead consumers into thinking this is different in some way from the 4th edition. It is not in any way different on the inside, only the outside. I don't know if the 4th edition is being "replaced" by the 40th anniversary edition, but anyone with a 4th edition should be aware nothing has changed with this "new" edition (which is not a 5th edition as Amazon's info states).

Other than that, this a great reference book!

Not the Real Deal--UC Press Should be Ashamed!

Do yourself a favor and buy a nice copy of the 3d edition of 1969. It doesn't list everything, e.g. no entry for "Sinkyone," for the understandable reason that in 1969 the Sinkyone was not yet a designated wilderness area. But the wealth of historical and biographical detail is simply astonishing. Now, this edition does list the Sinkyone, but the entry itself, like most I've looked at in this book, is--well, paltry. Not even a mention of location (the Sinkyone straddles coastal Mendocino & Humboldt counties). Worse, a huge amount of entries are just left out--e.g. if you didn't have access to the Third, you'd never know that Simmons Peak is in Yosemite NP and was named after a Doctor Simmons of Sacramento. Do yourself a favor and instead of this book, buy a beer or lollipop and save the lace.

Solid scholarship with a sweet candy-coating.

"Committed to Memory" is pop-science at its best: educational and entertaining. Not just some pseudo-scientific re-hash of ancient mnemonics like "Mega Memory" and so many other memory books out there; this book also preents the latest in legitimate scientific research on how memory works. Reading it provides one of those rare "a-ha" experiences; we are given explanations for facets of memory we all notice, but have seldom taken much time to ponder. Deserves to be a best seller.

not worth the time

This book describes the physiological aspects of memory. However, it does it in a fairly scatterbrained way without continuity between chapters. Also, the information is fairly anecdotal and the science is "dumbed down" significantly. If you're interested in the physiological basis for memory, there are much better books than this. Also, if you're interested in ways to improve your memory (as I was), this is not the book for you.

I've never bothered to review a book on Amazon before, but I truly enjoyed this book and wanted to say so. Rupp's exploration of memory is delightful reading and thoroughly informative, and I loved the quotes she uses liberally throughout. Just a great book on a huge subject.

In a witty, densely argued critique, Stanford University historian Robinson ( The Freudian Left ) levels the accusations of prominent anti-Freudians Frank Sulloway, Jeffrey Masson and Adolf Grunbaum. Sulloway, a sociobiologist, contends that Freud was a "crypto-biologist" whose ideas were rooted in evolutionary biology from Darwin to Edward O. Wilson. But the secret biological rationale Sulloway purports to find in Freud doesn't exist, counters Robinson. Former psychoanalyst Masson claims that psychoanalysis was founded through Freud's cowardly cover-up of his discoveries about the sexual abuse of children; Robinson faults Masson for a glaring lack of documentation. Grunbaum, a philosopher, charges that Freud's theories are inadequately supported by evidence, but Robinson replies that Freud refused to trim his imagination to suit the strict empirical canons of modern science. This corrective broadside is a valuable companion piece to Sulloway's Freud, Biologist of the Mind , Masson's The Assault on Truth and Grunbaum's The Foundations of Psychoanalysis.

In recent years, a number of charges have been leveled at the character and ideas of Sigmund Freud. In this book, Robinson addresses the concerns of three of the leading critics: Frank Sulloway, who reinterprets Freud as a sort of early sociobiologist; Jeffrey Masson, who claims that Freud's abandonment of the seduction theory in favor of the theory of infant sexuality was a cowardly acquiescence to pressure from the Vienna medical establishment; and Adolf Grunbaum, who argues that the idea of the unconscious is based upon shaky evidence. The book presupposes some knowledge of psychoanalytic theory, but Robinson does an excellent job of explaining his opponents' arguments as well as his own. While few American academic psychologists are concerned with Freudian theory, this book will be useful for scholars of philosophy and the humanities. Recommended for academic and research collections as a readable summary of current debate on Freudian theory.
