Island World: A History of Hawai'i and the United States, by Gary Y Okihiro

Brilliantly mixing geology, folklore, music, cultural commentary, and history, Gary Y. Okihiro overturns the customary narrative in which the United States acts upon and dominates Hawai'i. Instead, Island World depicts the islands' press against the continent, endowing America's story with fresh meaning. Okihiro's reconsidered history reveals Hawaiians fighting in the Civil War, sailing on nineteenth-century New England ships, and living in pre-gold rush California. He points to Hawai'i's lingering effect on twentieth-century American culture—from surfboards, hula, sports, and films, to art, imagination, and racial perspectives—even as the islands themselves succumb slowly to the continental United States. In placing Hawai'i at the center of the national story, Island World rejects the premise that continents comprise "natural" states while islands are "tiny spaces," without significance, to be acted upon by continents. An astonishingly compact tour de force, this book not only revises the way we think about islands, oceans, and continents, it also recasts the way we write about space and time.

From Publishers Weekly
In the first volume of a projected trilogy, Okihiro, professor of international and public affairs at Columbia, largely succeeds in a radical approach to historiography as applied to Hawaii. He defies the standard linear progression and view of humans as subjects with volition without regard for the agencies of other life-forms.... Okihiro combines human history, natural history and mythic Hawaiian folklore with interpretations of how Hawaiian cultural artifacts (such as surfboards) infiltrated American culture and vice versa. He likewise depicts the lives of Hawaiians who wound up in North America, either by choice or involuntarily. In young islanders taken to be Westernized at special schools, Okihiro sees a parallel to similar cultural cleansing (or schooling for subservience) of Native Americans. He also narrates the slow decimation of the rich and varied Hawaiian musical tradition reduced to clichés, à la Don Ho. Thus, Okihiro places the story of Hawaii in direct and constant relation to the story of the United States. Some readers may find this eclectic mix of facts hard to follow and synthesize, but all will come away intrigued and enlightened. 57 b&w photos, 6 maps. (Sept.)

From Booklist
No man is an island, and apparently no island is, either. Okihiro’s concise yet far-reaching cultural history of the Hawaiian Islands traces the vast influence the archipelago has exerted on the world from the dawn of geologic time to the present. As migrations of cultures settled on and embarked from the islands, the fragile balance of human and environmental ecology was impacted in ways both minuscule and monumental. Rather than a chronological unfolding of events in sequence, however, Okihiro places essential elements of Hawaii’s formation and development in context, chronicling how such diverse phenomena as warfare and religion, education and surfing, monarchies and music were affected by dominant world events. From the discovery of Eastern trade routes to the advent of motion pictures to the repercussions of the Civil War and the influx of leisure-class travel, Okihiro relates Hawaii’s past by profiling a diverse cast of characters whose guidance and direction forever altered the way the world would view these geographically remote islands vis-a-vis the community of nations. Fresh and Welcome Perspective
By Rocco
Often, when historians analyze the history of what we label an "island," we analyze the impact of continental political forces upon the island and its culture. Gary Okihiro has taken the opposite approach in his book Island World. The people of the Hawaiian Islands brought historical and cultural meanings to the U.S. In contrast to the "civilized" Western view of the world, which divides the Earth into continents and seeks to manipulate the meanings and functions of nature through science, the Polynesian peoples of the Pacific, in Okihiro's estimation, were (are) one with nature and their water civilization. For the peoples of the Pacific, history and geography do not occur within the Western imaginary confines of the continent and nation-state. Rather, all lands upon the Earth are, in a sense, islands, moving upon and connected with the massive plates that create the Earth's crust. Thus, Okihiro presents a multi-faced, fluid approach to world history, through the lens of the Hawaiian people, where cultures impact other cultures regardless of Westernized conceptions of geographic location. Okihiro analyzes these cultural exchanges through stories of religion, music, gender, film, education, travel, war and literature.

Okihiro's opening chapter provides a poetic, organic and feminine view of the land and sea that is Hawai'i. Earth is power to be revered and worshiped in Hawaiian social existence, as Hawaiians view themselves as a product of their environment, of volcanic birth. The Pele story, Okihiro claims, shows that "the volcanic fire-queen," like the Polynesian people of the Pacific, was unfettered by notions of time and space. Rather, Hawaiians, like their Polynesian descendants, lived in "a land not rooted and anchored to one spot, but [a land] that floated free" (22). Moreover, the peoples of the Pacific, coming to life and living in a volcanic geography, had indigenous roots that few cultures or peoples on Earth could relate to. As Okihiro shows for the remainder of his tome, such an existence and history had (has) much to offer U.S. culture and society. However, Western society sought to engage the feminine origins of Hawaii and its people with the masculine approach of imperialism.

Polynesian culture, specifically Hawaiian culture, clashed with white, Christian European and American paternalistic values and ambitions. Foreign visitors viewed the Hawaiian Islands themselves in the framework of Western scientific rationalizations rather than Hawaiian cultural realities. For example, volcanoes held religious, metaphoric life meanings for Hawaiians while Europeans typically saw only natural beauty through the lens of science. One American painter describes the Crater of Kilauea as one "I shall always think of as a piece of a dead world" (39). In another example, Okihiro characterizes the American bombing of Mauna Loa to divert its lava flow as "an assault against and desecration of the sacred earth, the gods and ancestors, and the Hawaiians" (41).

Okihiro provides numerous examples of the cultural exchange emanating from Hawaii toward the U.S. Surfing, a center of Hawaiian social and religious life, had a profound impact not only on American social life, but also upon its film and music industries. Hawaiian music was highly sought after in the 1920's U.S. and influenced blues and country music as well. Hawaiians served with U.S. forces during the War of 1812 and with Union forces during the American Civil War. Hawaiians were also actively engaged in gold mining and speculation in California after 1848. In essence, "the island acted upon and moved the continent" (211).

Perhaps most important are Okihiro's depictions and perceptions of U.S. missionary culture, race and gender in relation to Hawaiians. The Second Great Awakening initiated a creation of and large flow of missionary societies that sought to "civilize heathen societies." Although abolitionism and temperance found their roots in this religious movement, the movement itself still contained racial and gender driven motivations, as Okihiroi makes clear in his analysis of the missionary, "educational" work of Samuel Armstrong. Hawaiian citizens and immigrants were often treated in the same light as Native and Black Americans. White Americans were often chastised for or forbidden from miscegenation. Moreover, schools were created to assimilate non-white cultures, and hence eviscerate their indigenous identities.

This social movement coincided with the expansion of the U.S. marketplace in a westward trajectory, with capitalist entrepreneurs seeking to monopolize the fur and sugar trade across the Pacific. By the late 19th century, social constructs of manliness that had emasculated Native American societies throughout the century, sought to emasculate non-white, indigenous peoples, including Hawaiians (and islands themselves), across the Pacific while simultaneously proving white manliness through imperialization. This was, indeed, the so-called "White Man's Burden."

Aristophanic Comedy, by K. J. Dover

Professor Dover's newest book is designed for those who are interested in the history of comedy as an art form but who are not necessarily familiar with the Greek language.

The eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes are treated as representative of a genre. Old Attic Comedy, which was artistically and intellectually homogeneous and gave expression to the spirit of Athenian society in the late fifth and early fourth centuries B.C. Aristophanes is regarded primarily not as a reformer or propagandist but as a dramatist who sought, in competition with his rivals, to win the esteem both of the general public and of the cultivated and critical minority. He succeeded in this effort by making people laugh, and the book pays more attention than has generally been paid to the technical means, whether of language or of situation, on which Aristophanes' humor depends. Particular emphasis is laid on his indifference-positively assisted by the physical limitations of the Greek theatre and the conditions of the Athenian dramatic festivals-to the maintenance of continuous “dramatic illusion” or to the provision of a dramatic event with the antecedents and consequences which might logically be expected. More importance is attached to Aristophanes' adoption of popular attitudes and beliefs, to his creation of uninhibited characters with which the spectators could identify themselves, and to his acceptance of the comic poet's traditional role as a mordant but jocular critic of morals, than to any identifiable and consistent elements in his political standpoint.

Aristophanic primer
By J. C. Woods
If you don't know your parabasis from your agon, your are probably better off starting your study of Aristophanes with this book than one that assumes more like Strauss' Socrates and Aristophanes. In this book, Dover gives you an overview of the structure of the Attic comedy, defines terms, explains how they were staged and selected for performance (all the mundane issues Strauss does not deign to cover). Strauss is, of course, still the undisputed champ in explaining the meaning of the plays, but you have a better chance of understanding his explanations if you've read Dover first. Crede experto. I did it the other way round.

Aristophanean Basics
By J. C. Woods
Admittedly, Strauss' Socrates and Aristophanes is the best book of higher criticism on Aristophanes' remaining plays. Unfortunately, that book has a painful deficiency: Strauss overrates his readers, assuming they know their agon from their parabasis (a dubious assumption). Dover, while not where near so insightful, makes up for Strauss' deficiency by explaining the parts of the comedy, how they were staged and all the other practical details Strauss disdains. If you are a classical scholar, well maybe Dover's book is a waste of time. If not, then it is a valuable adjunct to Strauss( Better read before Strauss. I did it the other way. Not pretty.).

Ideal Introduction to Aristophanes
By J. E. S. Leake
This is certainly the best serious introduction to Aristophanes you can find. He covers almost everything: his introductory chapters cover the textual evidence, stage directions, the comic theatre, play structure, parody. Having done that, he works through the plays using each play to examine a different aspect of Aristophanes and the comic theatre. There are a few pages on Aristophanes' predecessors and rivals, then a larger section on the nachleben - posterity - of Arisophanes' works, finishing with an examination of various translations (the latest translations discussed are those of the 1960s - naturally for a 1972 book) and adaptations. It's a book I can't recommend enough, academic without being obscure and clear without being patronizing.

Other general books on Aristophanes that you may find interesting have a more limited range. Russo's _Aristofane: Autore di teatro_ (translated as Aristophanes: An Author for the Stage) is excellent for just that - Aristophanes as a playwright of real plays. MacDowell's Aristophanes and Athens: An Introduction to the Plays is a more recent book, somewhat like Dover but more focussed on the plays rather than themes, and rather less useful in my opinion. For a major literary study, Silk's Aristophanes and the Definition of Comedy might be tried.

For the Graecist, I recommend Willi's The Languages of Aristophanes: Aspects of Linguistic Variation in Classical Attic Greek (Oxford Classical Monographs). But that's for the more experienced.

Finally, as a very short - but intense - introduction, Ussher's Aristophanes (New Surveys in the Classics No 13) is excellent, and should be findable for five or so dollars second hand.

Highly Informative
By Fold Me Up Scotty
The Birth of Vietnam by Keith Weller Taylor is a must read for those who are into Vietnamese history because it covers in depth the rise and fall of dynasties such as, the Hong Bang, Au Lac, Trieu Da, Trung, Ba Trieu, Ngo, and Dinh, though the Trung and Ba Trieu were more like brief insurgencies rather than dynasties, and also the Chinese dynasties in Vietnam such as, the Qin, Han, Tang, Liang, Sung, Yuan (Khubilai Khan Mongols), and Ming. It also covers empires such as Funan, Chenla, and Lin I later called Champa, and the flowering of Buddhism in Vietnam. And since so much research went into the book, it makes a must read for Vietnamese history enthusiasts.

Many kudos for KW Taylor.

This is, by far, the most authoritative work in English about the history of Vietnam from prehistory to 974 AD.
The Vietnamese (Lac people as they were called at the time) were part of the Dong Son civilization, which was characterized by its bronze drums depicting aquatic scenery. Over the years, they brought to the Asian culture the "pho", the "ao dai", various musical instruments, poetry, and so on.
But what defined the Vietnamese is their indomitable aspiration for freedom. They just wanted to be left alone, therefore, were not always seen as "actors", but "reactors" to events around them. Despite being dominated for along time by the Chinese and the French, they yearned to live in a free country.
Sandwiched between giant China in the north and the kingdoms of Champa and Khmer in the south, they knew a long time ago they were not Chinese and, therefore, refused to remain enslaved by them. The Trung sisters (see book of same name) revolted against the Chinese and reigned as the first and only Queens of Vietnam until 42 AD. Defeated by Ma Yuan, they fell back under Chinese influence until 939 AD until Ngo Quyen was brilliant enough to recover the country's independence.
The period covered by Taylor represented the difficult times the Lac people went through to mature into an organized society strong enough to free themselves from the Chinese. Besides the Trung Queens, many others had tried unsuccessfully over the years to free from the Chinese yoke. The birth of Vietnam was thus not a smooth and normal one: it was the result of a series of abortive rebellions until its final success in 939 AD.

I don't think one needs to engage in chest-thumping nationalism to praise Taylor's work. The book is a beautiful example of solid scholarship. Taylor uses both Chinese and Vietnamese primary sources and compares them to give a more realistic picture behind the nationalist myths that Vietnamese schoolchildren (both North and South) have been taught for decades. Taylor also draws upon a large body of secondary sources in Chinese, Vietnamese, French, English, and Japanese. I doubt that there is ANY scholarship on this period of Vietnamese history in either Vietnamese or English that is of a higher quality than this. A work of lucid writing founded on excellent research.

In a study that will be of interest to all those concerned with the politics of gender, the history of sexuality, and the erotics of reading, Christopher Craft investigates questions fundamental to any history of present sexualities. How does the modern binary homosexual/heterosexual relate to earlier formulations like "sexual inversion" and "sodomy"? What part does literature play in the development of such categories, or in a culture's resistance to them? And what are the implications for the creation and maintenance of the presumed "natural" male heterosexual subject? How has male heterosexual subjectivity been established as a bulwark against the attractions of a homosexual desire that is repeatedly incited by the very culture that condemns it?

Craft examines the discourses of nineteenth-century psychiatry and sexology; some of Freud's central writings; and Tennyson's In Memoriam, Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, Stoker's Dracula, and Lawrence's Women In Love.

From the Inside Flap
"Craft is both ingenious and serious, writing strongly from a familiarity with several appropriate and well-assimilated theoretical traditions. We have already learned a lot from his work, and this vitally written book will be an original and influential contribution."—Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, author of Epistemology of the Closet

"Craft proves himself a formidable practitioner of the high Jamesian, Wildean, and Proustian style that continues, via Barthes and Derrida, to energize contemporary academic criticism at its most audacious and inventive. . . . A powerful argument not only about the dubious career of the inversion paradigm in Western constructions of same-sex desire but also about our culture's 'chilling cathexis between homosexual desire and death.' This book makes a distinguished and important contribution to gay studies."—Joseph Litvak, author of Caught in the Act: Theatricality in the Nineteenth-Century Novel

Blood Saga: Hemophilia, AIDS, and the Survival of a Community, Updated Edition With a New Preface, by Susan Resnik

For thousands of years boys known as "bleeders" faced an early, painful death from hemophilia. Dubbed "the Royal Disease" because of its identification with Queen Victoria, the world's most renowned carrier, hemophilia is a genetic disease whose sufferers had little recourse until the mid-twentieth century. In the first book to chronicle the emergence and transformation of the hemophilia community, Susan Resnik sets her story within our national political landscape—where the disease is also a social, psychological, and economic experience.

Blood Saga includes many players and domains: men with hemophilia and their families, medical personnel, science researchers, and the author herself, who was Director of Education of the National Hemophilia Foundation in the early 1980s. At that time the "miracle treatment" of freeze-dried pooled plasma blood products enabled men with hemophilia to lead full, normal lives. Then the AIDS virus infiltrated the treatment system and over fifty percent of the hemophilia community became HIV-positive. But rather than collapsing, this community refocused its priorities, extended its reach, and helped shape blood safety policies to prevent further tragedy.

The hemophilia community includes people from every socioeconomic and ethnic group, and Resnik's narrative and use of oral histories never lose touch with those affected by the disease. Her extensive informant interviewing allows much of this social history to be told by participants on all levels: parents, wives, nurses, doctors, government agency directors, health care providers, and many others.

Gene insertion therapy now holds the promise of a cure for hemophilia in the near future. Scientific breakthroughs inevitably become intertwined with the industry and academic medical centers that govern the national health care system. And in that system, says Resnik, costs and safety are sometimes contending issues. She makes clear that the lessons learned in Blood Saga apply to all of us.

From Library Journal
This social history of hemophilia in the United States begins in the early 20th century, when most hemophilia patients did not live past their teens. Resnik, a medical school professor (Univ. of California, San Diego) and former director of education for the National Hemophilia Foundation, then discusses the "golden era" when new treatments allowed longer, improved lives and greater independence. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the devastating events that led to increased activism during the AIDS crisis. Resnik conducted exhaustive research and interviewed numerous key players to provide firsthand accounts of the medical, political, and social events that shaped this community. She concludes with a look at the lessons we have all learned from their experiences. A lengthy glossary, statistical data, and an extensive bibliography are useful additions. This scholarly yet highly readable book is recommended for academic and public libraries, particularly those with larger health sciences collections.ATina Neville, Univ. of South Florida at St. Petersburg Lib.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
In 1984, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced that, between the years 1979 and 1984, 90 percent of patients with hemophilia who were treated with clotting-factor concentrates had been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A former director of education at the National Hemophilia Foundation, Susan Resnik has written a fascinating page turner about one of medicine's darkest periods. She describes the role well-meaning physicians and organizations trapped in fear and denial had in worsening the situation. In the final chapters of her book, Resnik shows how the hemophilia community survived -- renewed in spirit, strong and more united than ever.

The comprehensive approach to the treatment of hemophilia was initiated by Shelby Dietrich, a pediatrician in Los Angeles, in 1957. The limiting factor of the program was the lack of a potent, concentrated source of clotting factor (factor VIII) that could be used at home at the first sign of bleeding. This limitation was overcome by the discovery of cryoprecipitate by Judith Graham Pool in 1965. By 1968, Hyland Laboratories had received a license to market pooled factor VIII that had been refined and concentrated from cryoprecipitate. In 1973, Peter Levine and colleagues showed that the treatment of patients with hemophilia at home resulted in a net savings in health care costs by reducing the numbers of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and orthopedic surgeries. Resnik details the critical role of "Dr. Marcus Victor," her code name for an ambitious and talented platelet physiologist, in advancing the care of patients with hemophilia. After a two-year struggle, "Victor" and other physicians, with the solid backing of the National Hemophilia Foundation, were successful in getting Congress to authorize funding for 26 comprehensive hemophilia-treatment centers.

The establishment of hemophilia-treatment centers around the country ushered in a new, "golden" era for patients with hemophilia and their families. Patients even began engaging in athletics, and those with the mild form of the disease were gradually allowed to become involved in strenuous sports, even contact sports, as confidence increased in the miraculous power of factor VIII concentrates to prevent bleeding. However, in more than 90 percent of those treated with the concentrates, hepatitis developed. But the phenomenal improvement in lifestyle far outweighed concern about any future problems. A few "dinosaurs," such as Oscar Ratnoff, decided there was cause for concern. He restricted patients to treatment with the much safer but less convenient cryoprecipitate. A method of pasteurization that inactivated most viruses was discovered, but it increased the cost of the concentrates, and its routine use was not recommended.

In 1981, the first cases of AIDS were reported, all in gay men. By the summer of 1982 three patients with hemophilia had contracted AIDS, and the National Hemophilia Foundation issued an advisory to its members in which it passed on the information it had received from the CDC, adding that "at this time the risk of contracting this immunosuppressive agent is minimal." Leaders in the blood-banking community refused to view the problem as a potential disaster. One investigator from the CDC exploded: "How many people have to die?... Give us the threshold of deaths that you need in order to believe that this is happening." By the following year, there were so many cases that no one any longer questioned the extreme danger to the hemophilia community. By January 1988, the National Hemophilia Foundation announced that all products available for the treatment of hemophilia were free of contamination with HIV. But for most patients with hemophilia it was too late: HIV infection had already occurred.

The final chapters of Resnik's book chronicle the rising rage and anger of patients with hemophilia who were infected with AIDS, not only because of what happened to them, but also, in many instances, because of what happened to their wives and children. Lengthy, protracted lawsuits against the manufacturers of the concentrates were eventually successful in getting some compensation for the affected patients and their survivors. Surprisingly, physicians and national advisory groups were not the defendants in such suits, nor were they prosecuted outright, as occurred in France. The improvements in treatments for AIDS and the advent of gene therapy in the late 1990s renewed the hope and optimism of the hemophilia community.

Resnik's book forcibly brings home the wisdom of the ancient dictum "first, do no harm." She is careful in her criticism of physicians and organizations but does not fail to point out appropriately the important role that denial, paternalism, and hubris had in the disaster that befell the hemophilia community. I strongly recommend this book to those with hemophilia and their families, as well as to physicians, nurses, and others involved in the care of patients with hemophilia. I would also highly recommend it to medical students. Young women and men embarking on a career in the brave new world of gene therapy will find much in this book to contemplate.

A Hemophiliac's Must Read
By jbdean
Personally, I find Ms. Resnick's book fascinating. She gives a very good outline of the history of hemophila and how advances in technology became both a savior and a downfall to the community. I dont think she sweeps anything "under the rug." I think the prior poster needs to consider that at the time this book was written, the verdict was not completely out yet and Resnick wanted to take a more historical approach to determine how the initial corporate-patient group relationships were formed and how the problem arose in the first place.

The structure and story given by Ms. Resnick I believe comes across as objective as possible, which is difficult to prepare on a topic such as this. I think is actually a cautionary tale to medical patient communities and how they should NOT too closely align themselves with corporate entities, and how small accessions can lead to a slippery slope to total integration of the two.

Unfortunately, at the time clotting drugs came on the market what other choice did affected families have? The results were SO drastic and the alternative outcomes SO different, patients had no option. As Resnick points out, they really had no alternative but to become "canaries in a mine shaft," at the time they were canaries for the blood supply, they have now also become canaries about corporate-patient relationships.

Interesting Tale of a Unique Medical Tragedy of our Times

Fascinating read where the cure for the hemophilia community ended up killing those it meant to save. Resnick's style makes easy reading of a complex story.

Interesting, but . . .
By Bob Graham
As an older hemophiliac I appreciate the author sharing her knowledge of bleeding disorders history and AIDS; too little is known about what happened. At other times it felt as though the author was selectively glancing past some issues. She candidly discusses mismanagement at the NHF in the '80's and '90's. But on blood safety the author fails to tackle key questions like - why when the risk of Hepatits infection from blood was already well known did so many push the use of factor concentrates (with vastly higher risks of infection) without also pushing blood testing, or why did it take so long for the NHF and most treatment centers to properly warn patients about AIDS until years after it was discovered in the blood supply. In all, this book helps fill in some details, while leaving just as many questions.

Serial Composition and Atonality: An Introduction to the Music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, by George Perle

Widely recognized as the definitive work in its field ever since its original publication in 1962, Serial Composition and Atonality remains an unsurpassed introduction to the technical features of what is probably the most revolutionary body of work since the beginnings of polyphony. In the analysis of specific compositions there is first and last of all a concern with the musical surface—an attempt to trace connections and distinctions there before offering any deeper-level constructions, and to offer none where their effects are not obvious on more immediate levels of musical experience. In this sixth edition of the book, George Perle employs the new and more consistent terminology for the identification of transpositional levels of twelve-tone sets that he first proposed in Twelve-Tone Tonality (1977).

An advanced text
By David L. Phillips
Definitely a worthy tome, but not for a casual reader looking for history and/or a "popular" presentation of serial procedures in music. Perle is especially good in his analyses, and the chapters on free atonality and non-dodecaphonic serial works are excellent.

Most helpful introduction to the idea of serialization in non-tonal music
By Craig Matteson
This book, in all its revisions, has been in print for more than thirty-five years. It has been found very useful by students and general readers who are already well versed in tonal music systems and want a primer on the basic ideas behind the serial composition methods that grew up and matured during the 20th Century. The book says that it is an introduction to the music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern. While most of the musical examples are drawn from their music, examples from other composers such as Bartok, Babbit, Stravinsky, and others are also included.

Perle lays out some of the basic issues of organization that grew out of atonality and how the idea of sets or rows was used to provide order. He shows various kinds of serial organization including sets fewer than twelve tones, hexachords, and the full twelve tone set. He also does a great job in demonstrating the different ways composers implemented this organization principle. It is important to realize that the information here is really just what it says: an introduction. Composers have come up with many other kinds of implementations of the idea of serialization and sets. It is vital to keep in mind that there is no ordained way of composing with twelve tones. There are some basic postulates in the Schoenberg method, but no composer has to be bound by them other than by choosing to compose music that way.

Perle also shows the reader how composers use these rows and combine them in ways that create effects that are not a part of any of the rows including constructions that look like major and minor triads. Yes, your ear will pick them up quite readily, but the way the "move" is not tonal. However, they provide interesting color and a way for the composer to draw the ear to certain aspects of the composition.

There are also many other technical matters of the "standard" method of serialization that are not included here. But who would expect an introduction to be comprehensive?

penetrating and accessible
By A Customer
As far as I can tell, George Perle's books are the only ones that really come to grips with atonality. Others are either 1) simplistic glosses, 2) pieces of propaganda, or 3) attempts to impress or intimidate the reader (so as to entrench their authors in academia). Having heard one of George Perle's piano sonatas on the radio the other day and once a string quartet of his in concert, I can testify that he is himself a first-rate composer, and isn't it better to read the works of one who has an artistic stake in his subject?
However, for a contrasting point of view, I also recommend--with reservations--"Milton Babbitt: Words about Music", edited by Stephen Dembski. Like George Perle, Milton Babbitt is a prominent serialist composer. As it happens, I'm not a particular fan of his music, and I think his analyses tend miss the substance of the music he analyzes, but he is an influential, articulate, and intelligent exponent worth hearing out.
