Peasant and Nation offers a major new statement on the making of national politics. Comparing the popular political cultures and discourses of postcolonial Mexico and Peru, Florencia Mallon provides a groundbreaking analysis of their effect on the evolution of these nation states. As political history from a variety of subaltern perspectives, the book takes seriously the history of peasant thought and action and the complexity of community politics. It reveals the hierarchy and the heroism, the solidarity and the surveillance, the exploitation and the reciprocity, that coexist in popular political struggle.
With this book Mallon not only forges a new path for Latin American history but challenges the very concept of nationalism. Placing it squarely within the struggles for power between colonized and colonizing peoples, she argues that nationalism must be seen not as an integrated ideology that puts the interest of the nation above all other loyalties, but as a project for collective identity over which many political groups and coalitions have struggled. Ambitious and bold, Peasant and Nation both draws on monumental archival research in two countries and enters into spirited dialogue with the literatures of post-colonial studies, gender studies, and peasant studies.

A must read for anyone interested in nationalism
By A Customer
Mallon's theory of "peasant nationalism" is thought provoking for anyone interested in the construction of nationalism. Her work is a great example of how comparative historical research in Latin America can yield new insights for historians in other fields. Not only is her work instructive for those interested in popular conceptions of what it means to be in a nation, but her narrative is well written and engaging

A foundational text
By estudiante
Chances are if you are purchasing this book, you've been assigned it for a class, or you're otherwise being "forced" to read it. If you are interested in Latin American history, popular movements, and the possibilities and promise of theory, then you will not be disappointed. Peasant and Nation was thought-provoking and controversial upon its publication, and continues to be so. A number of its claims (particularly about Peru) have been hotly contested in academic studies that have followed. Nonetheless, it is a foundational work in the field, and one that benefits from a unique voice and interdisciplinary perspectives; to whit, archival research, postmodern critical theory, cultural anthropology, and subaltern studies. It's easy to get confounded by Mallon's prose, but it will be the images she employs that stick with you. An enigmatic set of bones on display in a rural Mexican museum. The ancestor of a 19th-century Mexican guerilla fighter staring out from behind the gates of her home. Veterans being "taught" by the state "the correct way to march" in a patriotic parade. Peruvian peasants ambushing Shining Path guerillas, and shipping their severed heads to a local military command. These illustrations support a theoretical framework adapted from other Gramsci and Southeast Asia scholars that seeks to reveal a national history "from below."
Mallon argues provocatively that popular groups (peasants, in this case) create their own political cultures and use them to contest the dominant hegemony. These hegemonies and counterhegemonies are far from stable and frequently fail, or are subsumed to state hegemony. Regardless, they are an important category of analysis, one that has been indispensable for Latin American historians (particularly those trained in North America) since its publication. The comparative cases she uses come from Mexico and Peru, and the resulting framework has been utilized since in cases across Latin America. Whether to complement or criticize, students of Latin American history will return often to this text.
