A True Classic

This is the book that took me through too many nights, and early morning units of biology and on into my Masters Studies. A quick reference book that has most of your common everythings on it -- it gets you into a ballpark and usually that is close enough for almost everyone. Plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, insects --- it is all here in one place and the big bonus is that it weighs about 300 pounds less than a set of professional reference books. If I could take only one book with me camping or hiking in the Sierra, this would be the one. And don't forget your 5x and 10x Loupes.

it's about time

After being inundated by low-fat, no fat, no salt, no taste, vegetarian, whole foods, sugar busting and optimal health, it was finally nice to read a sane cookbook with easy to make, tasty, interesting, simple healthy foods . Even my 18 month old likes just about everything in here and I have made almost everything. Eagerly waiting another cookbook by same author.

Everyday Ingredients for Healthy Cooking

Good cookbook for someone looking to change the way they eat. The ingredients used are what many people would already find in their cupboards. I bought it for the George Foreman Grill recipes and was disappointed -- the only two recipes in the book specifically for the grill were already in the cookbood that came with the grill! Many of the recipes could be adapted for the grill, however, I was not looking to do that much work. Even though it didn't meet my need for purchasing it, this book was a good read and I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes.

Still a "go to" cookbook in my kitchen after 5 years

I've had this book for 5 years. That alone is telling. I don't have much tolerance for keeping things around that aren't useful.

I'm not one to cook through an entire book, but paging through and checking my notes, I've prepared about 30% of the recipes in the time I've had this cookbook. Not only that, but I've enjoyed them enough to give many a repeat performance. There is only one recipe that has a negative note for being a little too heavily spiced for my taste, but that's easy to work around.

I enjoy the fact that Cherie makes healthy eating very accessible by calling for ingredients that can be found in a well-stocked grocery store. These recipes are not likely to bust your budget either. My family (husband, toddler, 4-year-old) will eat these recipes without complaining. In fact I think the more I use it and similar recipes it is setting them up to enjoy the taste of real food.

I enjoy Cherie's preludes to recipes giving some of attributes of ingredients in the dish. Often we're given thousands of healthy recipes but no indication what makes them healthy, or we are inundated with information about individual ingredients with no clues on how to really enjoy them. Cherie bridges that information gap nicely with this book of knowledge AND practical application for everyday meals.

I wish Cherie would provide more nutritional information than she does, like grams of fiber and protein, in the nutritional information breakdown. Also, dividing a large stew recipe by 4 or 6 when counting calories is no easy task, so approximating serving sizes (1 1/2 cups for instance) would have been helpful. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.

I wish Cherie would produce another cookbook like this. I'd love another 200 of her recipes. A cookbook this reliable and used is rare. If you are looking for an easy way to start eating healthier - check it out.

Great book for All Ages.

It's great to find a book that guides us to achieving difficult skills. Gelb/Buzan shows how important making mistakes is to creating success. The books isn't a complete book on juggling, but I don't see any need for more pages than is written.

I haven't mastered 3 ball Juggling, but I am comfortable with it. I started 2 in 1 hand which is the basis of 4 ball juggling.

It's really demanding on your throwing technique and less on your sense of sight. Mastering 4 balls is a totally different dimension because it pushes you to your ambidexterity limit. Just don't give up and be aware of your technique.

Learning to Learn

I was amazed that I could do 3 ball juggling just from reading this book...of course, it took me some time and effort. But I did not expect that a written text book could teach and coach the development of motor skills.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the emphasis on relaxation techniques...which were very useful, and it felt awesome to be able to develope some techniques by reading a written text book.

I always believed that motor skills can be taught more effectively using a video or with a personal coach. So I was a little skeptical about being able to learn juggling from a book, but I really wanted to see if I could actually learn juggling on my own.

I have absolutely great respect for the author...for his technique of learning to learn.

I even tried to teach my staff juggling using the same premise and philosophy as this book. It was great to see them realize that they can in fact learn anything...and we were juggling A4 sheets of paper (crumpled up into paper balls)!

If you want to achieve your full potential in anything you are ever to do, whoever you are, look no further. This book helps with just that. Written in a playful tone, and with practical examples from the game of juggling, you will find all the confidence, courage and mental skills to do anything you aspire. As the book also teaches juggling, it's style will feel a bit unfamiliar to most readers, but considering how it improved my life I MUST give it a 5 star. Check out books about accellerated learning by the same authors as well.

Trademark intelligence and eloquence, now in essay form

A friend who said he was reminded of Joan Didion by these essays only made clear to me how much more there is to Solnit: one of the most gifted writers we have, for one thing, who brings to bear sensitivities to political questions, her own personal interactions with the environment, historical and philosophic musings, at the same time researching her topics and presenting pertinent and sometimes obscure facts with a casualness that belies the rigor that must have gone into their research.

Readers new to Solnit might be steered first to her celebrated classic, "River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West," but these essays sacrifice none of the intellectual reach and sweep of that earlier work. Some are slightly dated, as might be predicted from their topicality, but all are well enough written to maintain interest as snippets out of time. I particularly enjoyed one in which, having invited Solnit to visit, Susan Sontag seemed to welcome her "into the republic of literature;" in another, Solnit makes a breathtaking connection between the bikini waxes of Playboy bunnies and clear-cutting in the Sequoia National forest--and makes a pertinent point of it.

I'm not especially driven to read about the ingenious ways rapacious corporations have skirted laws and ethics to plunder the American landscape, still less about our own disregard; but Solnit makes interesting not only those subjects but many others in this volume. Each essay is an example of a wonderful writer plying her craft, a reflective citizen and highly cultivated mind never so self-indulgent as to forego hard information that you've never heard before, historical facts that have been overlooked or suppressed.

I suspect that some of these essays will be classics fifty years hence. In the meantime, enjoy the literary champagne, even as you become better informed citizens of this, our beleaguered planet.

This is one of my favorite collections of Solnit's work - at least, as far as I have read up to this point; by no means exhaustive. I think that her work is beautiful and clear, poignant and strong. She digs deeply into issues that are incredibly important while maintaining a striking poetic voice. It is the writing of the wise sister you always wanted.

He systematically and with quite great detail investigates similarities -- and differences -- between the contexts of these movements. The 21 papers presented there have been collected in this handsome volume and edited with care by Pasler, the symposium's director. The scope and quality of the material is impressive, though much of the subject matter will interest only serious scholars, particularly the knotty sections on theoretical perspectives and compositional practices. Unfortunately, one of the lighter and more inventive contributions, a droll essay by Roger Shattuck, inexplicably has been pared down. In this study of unwed, divorced, widowed, and married women at work and at home across three political regimes, Elizabeth Heineman traces the transitions from early National Socialism through the war and on to the consolidation of democracy in the West and communism in the East.

Based on thorough and extensive research in German national and regional archives as well as the archives of the U.S. occupying forces, this pathbreaking book argues that marital status can define women's position and experience as surely as race, gender, sexual orientation, and class. Heineman finds that, while the war made the experience of single women a dramatic one, state activity was equally important. As a result, West German women continued to be defined in large part by their marital status. In contrast, by the time of reunification marital status had become far less significant in the lives of East German women.

A generation of difference in German women.

Elizabeth Heineman's first book improves on her earlier articles describing the hurdles overcoming political resistance to legal acceptance of women and their children. Professor Heineman challenges the assumption that the development of women "standing alone" in the East paralleled their development in the West. Her analysis goes beyond the battle for recognition of their social/sexual lives in the era of the "surplus women" (There were nearly seven million more women than men in Germany in 1946), and considers the effect on marriage of German reunification in 1990. Although married women in both Germanies, within the traditional locus for sexual expression, had eaiser availability to creature comforts, such as homes and apartments, the Christian coalition in power in the West made special efforts to defend the traditional nuclear family. Thus, women in the East grew up believing that women must integrate motherhood with their careers, but in the West the two livestyles were viewed as mutually exclusive. Heineman suggests that the generation of separation has created fundamental difference where sameness is expected, and that the equality created in the East may now be superimposed on the West.
