Entertaining, thought provoking, a MUST buy

As a long time mountaineer, I am well versed in the mountaineering literature. My book collection has many treasures, but none as valued as Bernbaum's "Sacred Mountains of the World". This is a book I use to remind me that the lure of the mountains has a spiritual aspect that transcends the lure of conquest. Some mountains are special and Bernbaum, a Buddhist scholar in addition to his work in Asian Studies, tells their stories with great skill. Drawing upon the literature and myths of the past, Bernbaum reminds the modern reader why we should look upon mountains as "embodiments of humanity's highest ideals and aspirations". The book is entertaining as well as thought provoking--the photos are superb. The book is so good, it makes me want to share it with others. I have given it as a gift many times. I enthusiastically give it five stars.

Essential!

This is one of few essential books in my library. It's the encyclopedia of sacred mountains, but also clearly a work of love. Sacred mountains have come to guide my own life in a very profound way, and this book has given wise counsel to such a journey. It is also supremely beautiful with some sublime fullpage photos - worth buying an extra coffee table for!

What starts as a well-conceived, even brave proposition-to unite academic writing and Eros-results in a collection of short essays that are of limited interest for being so problematically self-absorbed. Blending art history, autobiography, stream of consciousness, facts about female bodybuilding, poetry, drama, gender studies and other forms of postmodern discourse, this book rebels against traditional "unsloppy" scholarship, of the sort Frueh has already demonstrated in an admirable catalogue of the work of contemporary artist Hannah Wilke. Given the sensual undercurrents that always inform the art experience, and the fact that historically, this experience has frequently been conveyed through representations of women's bodies, Frueh's concept comes across as a worthy feminist project. Unfortunately the writing, passionate though it is, doesn't deliver. Essays documenting the author's lecture-performances make a point (and this quickly grows wearisome) of her "sexy" attire, makeup and buff physique. Diaristic descriptions of sexual encounters, photographs of the author in states of erotic abandon, her blunt admissions of desire and frequent lapses into a metaphorical "she" ("'I am a Wordswoman,' she said, 'Swordswoman and I use wordplay as a weapon from the head and lips'") all work hard to shock. But, as historian Frueh herself should know, the radical edge of explicit rawness has already been effectively tempered by such pioneer feminist performance artists of the 1970s as Lynda Benglis and Carolee Schneeman. Perhaps Frueh's own work is best experienced as performance. But judging from the scripts, this reader doubts it.

Oops

I did not like this book as much as I expected to. I admit to having been *really* looking forward to reading it. But I ended up not caring much for what I read.
It's hard to say specifically why I disliked it. It may be that (like "The Vagina Monologues"), this material works much better in performance. But I think it alse had to do with the odd confluence of academic writing with prose that was clearly intended to be something else entirely. I kept wanting to think that these dissonances I was experiencing were intentional and that they had some kind of meaning. But in the end, I couldn't find one.
Another issue I had was that the book seemed really deeply rooted in heterosexuality. Which is fine, except that it seemed like the author was trying to be more universal.
Finally, I lost interest. This is one of the few books I have failed to finish reading. And I don't expect to return to it later. In fact, I have already given it away to someone else who said she wanted it.

a good fight

What Joanna Frueh is trying to do is no easy task, and there are few clear precedents in either form or content to make it any easier. She is trying to reintroduce the idea of the erotic into rationality, in a sense trying to overcome the old Cartesian mind-body split, but what makes it more difficult is that she's also trying to find a voice for the feminine that is natural to erotic thought (precisely because the "masculine" voice has been dominant so long and is synonymous with the rational). My own hunch is that she is attempting to make metaphor and sensuality explicitly natural to reasoning. The best example I can think of that, in some way, mirrors her attempt are the dramatic dialogues of Plato, which never separate thought entirely from the context of the people thinking and speaking. Sure, everyone who followed Plato explicated and reduced his ideas in the form of essays, resulting in the notion that all he cared about were idealistic forms, but the dialogues themselves are always filled with irony, points of view to consider, setting, etc. Anyway, if someone likes experimental narratives, such as "The Chronology of Water" or the classic by Catherine Millet "The Sexual Life of Catherine Millet," he or she may also enjoy the considerable effort Joanna Frueh puts into the arduous task of deconstructing and reconstructing how reason works when the body is not divested of its presence in our thought.

A Useful Primer

My love for the Sierra Nevada mountains goes back to the days of my youth when we made family trips to Yosemite and Sequoia. Later as a teenager filled with wanderlust, I returned to explore them on my own terms. Despite having made many trips to the Sierras, I never really read much about them until recently when I read several books covering the subject by early explorers of the area like William Brewer and Clarence King. Readers of those books are referred to Farquhar's History of the Sierra Nevada by amazon and others, so I bought this and found it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
If you want a broad overview of the history of the Sierras, particularly the High Sierras, then this is the book I would recommend. Farquhar's history is a very useful primer that touches on all important aspects of exploration of the High Sierra and the progress made from mere exploitation to preservation and recreation. Note that the focus is on the high country as the history of the foothills has been much more extensively surveyed.
The book covers the period from the first tentative Spanish penetrations, to the arrival of trappers and hunters from the east, then on to the settlers and further to the establishment of the National Forests and Parks in the region. Farquhar covers Jedediah Smith, John Fremont, Brewer, King, John Muir, and others who contributed so much to the exploration of the Sierras, the discovery of the important passes, the climbing of the peaks, and the naming of the natural features. He also writes of the subsequent struggle between those who wanted to exploit the mountains for all they were worth and those who felt that posterity had a stake in their partial preservation. Additionally, he discusses the politics of the exploitation/preservation debate and the many political battles in both Sacramento and Washington DC that have made the High Sierra the place we know today. The once dominant mining and logging industries are of small importance compared to the great importance placed on the waters and watershed of the Sierras by most Californians today.
Most thrilling to me are the descriptions of the backcountry and the tales of finding paths through previously uncharted territory. Francis Farquhar's history is well written, extensively footnoted, and relatively fast-paced. His enthusiasm for his subject is evident throughout. Since this is an overview, he doesn't bog you down in the minutiae of the events about which he writes. If you are a lover of the Sierras, but have a hazy knowledge of their history, then I highly recommend reading History of the Sierra Nevada.

Great historical look at the High Sierra's

As the author says in the preface, this book "deals with human experiences in the Sierra Nevada from the time the Spaniards first saw it in the latter part of the eighteenth century to the present, when its economic and recreational uses serve several million people." Chapters are numerous, concise, and specific to event or persons, and include sections on the early Indians, Jedediah Smith, Joseph Walker, Fremont, Yosemite, the giant Sequoias, the coming of the railroad, important surveys, John Muir, and Mount Whitney, to name just a handful of the subjects dealt with. Arranged chronologically, the book is an excellent history of the region. Farquhar has consulted and presented information from original sources, and although chapters are relatively short, they are packed with interesting and important details. The book is also well illustrated and contains some excellent maps. It's a handsome overview of the history of the Sierra Nevadas and is a good starting place for anyone interested in the subject.

For people with a glass eye, oops an eye for glass

As with many subject there is a plethora of books, each covering a certain niche. This book is a great historical overview of glass from an artistic view.

There are ten sections mostly chronological and they tell little of what was happening at the time that particular galas style and method was used.

The book is full of color pictures and description of the glass from different eras. I prefer the more modern sleek sculptured designs.

Best Political Science Book of the Year

I could hardly put this book down. The battle being fought is truly a life and death matter, alliances and strategies evolve on both sides, and the Tobacco Industry uses their multi-million war chests to mislead the public over and over and over again. Even when you think you can relax after a victory by the anti-tobacco forces, in the next chapter the Tobacco Industry is lurking behind yet another door with a butcher's cleaver, which ends up being wielded by tobacco funded politicians and the California Medical Association to cut tobacco education funds and to weaken the anti-tobacco media campaign. Really this book is about much more than California and its battle with the tobacco industry. It is the best book I've ever read about why we need campaign finance reform and effective sunshine laws. You are shown all the nitty-gritty details, the back room deals, the closed-door bargaining. You'll emerge from this book well-prepared to detect lies in future wars, and to read between-the-lines in daily newspaper coverage.

An eye-opening "Must Read" manual for activists

"The Tobacco War" is part social and political history, part "how-to" manual. Not a dry catalogue of events, but written with a sense of the human drama surrounding each twist and turn of the tale. Co-author Stan Glantz, involved so deeply in the movement, offers the most incisive, comprehensive, and definitive perspective on the California anti-tobacco effort available. I was astounded to read of the intrigue and jaw-dropping audacity of the Tobacco Industry and its allies in the State government on one hand, and the incredible courage and tenacity of those fighting it in the most aggressive and effective way in history on the other. The growth in political savvy and will of the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society is catalogued in detail, as are the machinations of the State legislature, the governor's office, and lobbyists and pressure groups when money comes up for grabs. This is an outstanding text for the social or political scientist, activists of any type, and anyone in state local politics. It is a remarkable and practical instruction manual for anyone in tobacco use prevention today. These heroes have not left the field. Their enemy, the Tobacco Industry, is immortal.

Best decorating book that I've read

I bought this book 2 years ago when I was decorating my first apartment and have referred back to it a number of times, especially now that I'm buying my first house. Most decorating books are either books that are simply pretty pictures with no information, simply text that provides information with no pictures, or just contains decorating projects. This book manages to successfully combine all three. The ideas and looks are both stylish and very practical.
The main thing that I like about this book is that it assumes that you want a great looking home but don't have a fortune to spend. It offers many many tips on how to achieve a stylish home without breaking your budget. Most books that I have read, assume that we all can buy brand new top of the line furniture.
I highly reccommend this book for anyone decorating, whether you are in an apartment or a house.

Not for renters--more for those who OWN their apartment

I ordered this book based on the title, thinking that "apartment" referred to a rental space. I quickly discovered that the book was geared more for New York City residents who own their apartment. (That's what we'd call a condominium here on the West Coast.)
If you're looking for a book on how to decorate an interior when you can't modify the paint color or structure, this book isn't it.
That said, the ideas in this book are creative and colorful, and will certainly inspire many people...I just could not use many of these ideas in my rented space.

Great Ideas that Are Easy and Practical

This is not just another decorating book full of pretty pictures. It is filled with easy and practical solutions for the unique problems one faces in apartment decorating. The apartments used in the book are REAL apartments--the kind normal people live in, not the fancy penthouse apartments feautured in design magazines that were done by high end designers. The looks are stylish, up-to-date and can be achieved by almost any amature decorator. There is a variety of styles and alternatives presented for any budget. This book has spurred my creativity. I keep going back to it for more and more ideas and projects. I HIGHLY recommend it.
